- From deleted scenes, to card replacement blunders, to characters motivations, there certainly were an almost uncountable number of changes made by 4Kids when they dubbed the Yugioh Duel Monsters anime.
This list will take a look at 50 (in no particular order) instances where things were changed in the English dub from the original Japanese anime. I hope you all enjoy, and I hope you enjoy my first ever video in this rapid list kind of style!

So you're telling me that instead of just a quick death after losing a card game, 4Kids decided that it would be more "kids' friendly" saying that the loser will not lose his soul, but that the soul will also be sent to a place full of torture and despair for the rest of eternity?

TrueOrigin XD, tho it was creative, it was still pretty dark. My cousin who watched DM dub when he was 10 didn't exactly get the torture part so I guess 4Kids gets a lucky pass.

It's not just the above that does it either- one of the Aquamirror cards (can't remember which) features a woman, obviously dead, in obvious pain and distress. The TCG took her mouth from an pen scream to completely shut, effectively making her look dead.

Riki the Legendary Heropon You see her in the manga and in the dub. In the dub after Pegasus is defeated, Yugi goes to the hospital to see his grandpa. The woman standing right behind his grandpa is his mom.
I always assumed it was a situation like with Donald Duck's nephews where he just for some reason permanently lives together with another relative.

I figured he had the anime protagonist hair do that kills either one or both parents
I would love it if we got a redub of yugioh in the future. Keep the original voice actors, but remove all the censorship

Not going to happen unless you remove the uptight parents who can't take a joke and don't want there kids seeing violance on TV. These dubbing corporations don't want a bunch of again parents calling the station then next thing they know there management is in a court room. Being sued because uneducated people here in the west took it the wrong way.

This is a penalty game called "Hand and Gun". Keith was forced to play Russian Roulette with a gun embedded in his own hand.
You missed out on my least favourite change. Joey's arc in Battle City!! In the original he wanted to earn a match against Yugi, win his Red-Eyes back fairly and become a true duelist. In the 4-Kids version he is just "Helping Yugi" defeat Marik, it sucks so hard.
4kids cut out so many of joey's good character-developing scenes :/ i would have liked joey a lot more as a kid if i'd known more about his background and internal struggles and motivations, but instead he was reduced to a goofy sidekick.

now i understand why in the end scene of battle city yugi and joey started a duel. i never understood it what that meant but now it makes sense

@Parker I'd like to also bring to your knowledge if you haven't learned since your Comment haha, but after the battle city arc concluded, in later seasons Joey has his red eyes back, implying he did win it back against atem.
Worth noting, the card that Kaiba uses to jam the gun is Gyakutenno Megami, which translates to "Goddess of Turnabout", which is a very appropriate card to turn the situation around.

Yeah, for the longest time I didn't know about the fact that they were supposed to have real guns in the show, I only found out about the finger guns thing because I watched the abridged series. ^-^ So happy to be in on the joke in time to make it on this comment section. ^-^

One of my biggest issues in the dub was the motive for kidnapping Mokuba in Duelist Kingdom. The dub claimed you needed a Kaiba family member to control the company, which is the dumbest thing in the world considering Dartz buys KaibaCorp later. The sub gave them an actual legitimate reason for kidnapping him, as he had the key to new technology Kaiba was working on.
4kids- Guns, Blood, the word Death, and punching/smacking someone is bad, but corporate espionage and kidnapping are just fine.
TombWraith But the technology Pegasus was after was Kaiba's Solid Vision technology, which he already had access to for his duels, as his plan in the sub was to use the technology to create a solid hologram of his wife, and he needed to defeat Yugi to get the KaibaCorp executives on his side. The dub changes it to acquiring Yugi's Millennium Item along with the others to open a gateway to the after life to acquire his wife's soul and place it into a mechanical body to restore her to life. I believe Dartz bought KaibaCorp by hacking into Kaiba's personal accounts and took all his stock, making it come off as a hostile takeover.
I don't know because in the dub they state Dartz hacked into the account of Kaiba corp and did that illegally. One thing about the dub that I didn't get though was why they seemed to leave Bakuba alone. Since they needed him to sign over control of Kaiba corp wouldn't they torture him until he gave in?

Its kind of hard to hide a kidnapping to be honest. What were they gonna do, just not mention Mokuba for 3/4 of the first season?
I stick with the manga. I've got no idea why they changed the names. Manga Yugi was savage af. Blew people up with gunpowder, sealed kids in spirit worlds, killed several people or left them with disabilities etc, etc. Hell, there were thugs who were going to kill people using yoyos ffs

Wasn't this explained as initially having a piece of Zorc influencing him, and then steadily mellowing out the more time he spent with his friends?
While I do agree that most changes were kinda silly and annoying, I will say besides the shadow realm, I liked the change of Pegasus' motives simply because desperately trying to bring his wife back from her untimely demise has more of the "tragic lover" thing going for it as where just trying to make a hologram would just seem kinda weird/creepy. But that's just my opinion.

It just didn't make any sense with how the millennium items functioned. The dub changed the purpose each time they altered the plots, thus there was no consistency to them and you got things such as Bakura wanting all 7 for their power (more ambiguous in the sub until you find out exactly why), but Pegasus wants them to revive his dead wife which they can't do, but wait according to Marik the true power is inside the Puzzle alone and within the Pharaoh himself. It didn't have any consistency as to what the items represented.
Granted, you have the "mind crush" scene in the pilot which really makes no sense in either version because Atem didn't really use it again. But these inconsistencies are rarer in the sub then in the dub.
That wasn't really a dub change. It was there in the original and the manga.

I think that people not knwing exactly what ancient egyptian artifacts do makes sense. Legends get twisted. Marik was part of a line of people who had lived in a tomb for millenia, and Pegasus was limited by archaeology. It makes sense that only Bakura would understand because he had an ancient spirit inside him.
fun fact the part when Panic kidnapped Mai Valentine it was not cut from the English dub it was just in a different episode I think it was in the ending of the episode where Joey duels Rex.
For real!? Maybe thats why when I went back and looked I thought it was cut, I didnt remember that scene being in the dub either, but then again so many scenes, its hard to keep track lol
Yeah I wouldn't put it past 4kids switching scenes up and putting them in different episodes you never know what them.

The Kaiba believing in the magic stuff in the Japanese ver makes the Dark Side of Dimensions dub make a lot more sense. Also sad all the awesome Kaiba moments were edited out since he's my fav character.

@@hiddejager Kaiba was not present for that duel in manga, which DSOD is a continuation of. Lets be honest though, even in the context of the original anime, I feel that Kaiba will end up doing the same thing at some point.
The changes that bother me most are the alterations of villain motivation. When I watched the subbed version, I was really confused when Pegasus never even mentioned Yugi's puzzle, and that the island eliminators have nothing to do with Pegasus at all. But I did think the story was much better with Pegasus wanting to head Kaiba Corp.
Same with Marik. I think it's a lot more in character for him to want to kill Atem rather than take his Millenium item, and it also, for me, made his alliance with Bakura make more sense.

It really does. The dubbed and subbed versions, to me, can sometimes feel like different shows. I think it's a series that's good to watch both versions for that reason.
not really, Pegasus motivation in the sub makes zero sense considering that unlike in the Manga he already has access to advanced holographic technology, so what the heck does he need Kaibacorp for?

That only made sense in the Manga where he didn't have the technology, in the dub him wanting the items to bring her back to life works because later on it's shown those items do open a portal to the afterlife.
I fail to see how Marik wanting to kill Atem makes sense considering the puzzle will be useless to him if he does.
i remember when i was at the cinema and watched the dark side of dimensions and saw the guard pull the gun on aigami i literally said out loud "oh man they didn't censored the gun" and got some laughs from some people XD

Hell, TOY guns are a popular thing for children (or... they were, I dunno maybe times have changed and it's all about toy battleaxes now). Point is, kids know what guns are and what they do. It'd be like arguing that the card Shield and Sword needs to be censored because a sword is a weapon that kills people.
Oh yeah, I forgot 4Kids had the fetish of changing a character's background Cards in the deck.
Also, I can honestly say I like the Shadow Realm concept a bit more than the just death concept. I like the actually darker "You will be sent to a realm to be tortured for eternity"
You know, I was grew up reading the manga, and I was surprised to learn people *didn't* know the Shadow Realm was made up by 4Kids! I saw a viral post online about it back around 2014, and I didn't get. It didn't really occur to me that people couldn't see through it.
I mean, most people only watched the show on TV and not many were interested enough to go watch the original version or read the manga
Y'know, it's kind of interesting that Arcana has The Winged Dragon Of Ra in his hand, because Marik later mentions that he tried duplicating that card and placing it in the decks of some of his 'weaker servants', but that the copies were apparently defective.
well according to the dub the copies work just fine as long as you're strong enough to handle them

wow, i knew that the English Dub and Japanese Sub were different, but these edits and censorings make it a lot more badass. i've never watched the Original version of the series before but now i want to. The Battle Series saga seems extremely dark and gore like with Yami Marik killing people, torturing Mia and Bakura banishing his victims to Hell.

It makes more sense in the sub, in which their powers aren’t directly connected.
I understand why they changed some things to make the show kid friendly, but why cut out the extra scenes from the final episode. I don't know if you noticed that they actually forgot to censor the whipping scene from one of the Crash town episodes in 5ds. That scene disturbed me and I was 16 at the time, imagine how a younger kid would've felt. I can't believe that somebody messed up so much that Vivian and Arcana got God cards XD.
You forgot the "Heart of the cards". This is a recurring thing in the dub, but in the original it was only mentioned ONCE in the first episode and then never again.
Here's what I think Kazuki Takahashi needs to do, they need funimation to DUB not only duel monsters but also SEASON 0 as well!!! Yugioh needs to be re dub again but with no filler, no censorship, keep the original Japanese script, keep the original all 5 openings and endings, keep the same music score as the Japanese dub, and last but not least make it more HD and possibly Blu-ray. Yugioh really does need a reboot like dragonball z, when akira toriyama decided to remake the series better well same thing here is needed!!! and it's not to late for newcomers and teens of this new generation to love the original yugioh
YGO:Duel Monsters is already basically a reboot of season 0. The franchise is about card games now, the concept of "King of Games" being king of all games died when they created the Duel Monsters season.
Awkward Squirtle And yet 4Kids kept the "King of Games" title while promoting the card game even harder than the original.
Hilariously enough, FUNimation did distribute Yu-Gi-Oh Uncut. Sadly, this version is largely incomplete. Furthermore, you forgot to mention keeping the same voice actors from the 4Kids run, where appropriate at least. After all, could you really imagine anyone other than Dan Green as Yugi and Atem? He nailed those two. Remake? You mean DBZ Kai? Because that wasn't a remake or a reboot. It's a REMASTERED RECUT, and even then it's not entirely superior to the original because it indiscriminately removes filler, and there were some really good filler episodes of DBZ (ex. Plight of the Children), and I don't think Akira Toriyama was involved.

SuperStuffliker It's more that they didn't exactly die immediately. They went through what was called a Penalty Game. Basically they are tortured till they die (usually after 24 hours or so). If they aren't dead by the time the person they lost to is defeated, they are freed.
In the manga, those who go through a Penalty Game instantly die, but somehow, both the Toei and NAS versions of the anime reduce it to a mere coma.
In the manga version when Mai is in the hourglass it was filled with flesh eating bugs instead of sand so that she had to be saved in 24 hours or she would die. Pretty brutal.
At number 6, Yugi looks like he's holding the winged dragon of ra as well.
It's not a censorship but it is a frequently repeated edit that I find interesting/potentially unnecessary. 4Kids frequently filled silence with dialogue in the dub just cause. One example is that when Shadi is in Bakura's room during Battle City there's no dialogue but in the dub he internally monologues about things being off with the Millenium Items and the world being in peril until that's sorted out before simply leaving the dude who took Pegasus's eye. It made it seem like Shadi failed at his one job even though it was probably more of a Shadi just being like "ugh this a-hole" (due to their previous encounter in DSOD)
Addin dialogue in silent moments is why Tea was an annoying info dump in the dub.
Honestly, all dubs used to do that, apparently they thought
Kids would change the channel if there was more than a few seconds of silence. I know they filled the silences in Digimon, and DBZ had a few of those too. In the Japanese version of DBZ, Goku and Freeza have a long, wide-angle staredown, like in a western or Samurai movie; but in the dub they ruin it with a joke about Goku's shoes being untied. Another example is Gohan's SSJ2 transformation, in the sub there's no dialogue, just music. They let the imagery speak for itself, but in the dub they gave Gohan an internal monologue explaining it and talking about what a great guy 16 is, keeping in mind that Gohan doesn't even know 16. I think Team Four Star like to riff on that part.
to be fair 4Kids isn't the only one that did that, it's common practice for dubs to do this as they aren't used to silent moments without music or dialogue, that was notably done for Kiki's Delivery Service where music was added where there was none originally.
Also in the manga, Pegasus kills Keith by creating a gun from Keith's hand and shoots himself in the head.
Also I remembered fully well that the scene with Panic (or Player Killer) abducting Mai was still in the dub version
The scene with Panik abducting Mai wasn't removed. I remember that scene on Kids' WB.

When it came to the voice acting, music, and even some comedic one-liners, 4Kids did a damn good job. Honestly, I'd prefer watching the dub over the sub if 4Kids didn't change almost everything from the original. I still enjoy watching the dub, but I think everyone can agree that these censorships almost ruined it.

I agree about what they did to Jack. I don't mind giving him a British accent as long as they can make him sound badass, but instead we get Jack Atlas with the voice of Bakura, instead. You know what's funny? 4Kids utilized many New York voice actors like: Mike Pollock; Jason Griffith; Veronica Taylor; etc. One of the voice actors was Mike Diraison, the voice of Guts. Wouldn't it have been more awesome if Jack Atlas had the voice of Guts from Berserk? But, that didn't happen.
I disagree with the Seto one. I like Seto better in the dub because they made him into a snarky asshole who's not impressed with anything. I especially love all the quotable lines they gave him. This one is one of my favorites:
"So thanks to me Wheeler's monster just lost half it's strength. Now his creature is as puny as his mind!"

Yugioh Everything Everybody loved the idea of selling the cards.
It’s just that Japan tried to sell them to edgy teens while 4kidz tried to sell them to the parents of little kids.
@@MV96_ whoever greenlit this was really clever. Even despite all of the censorship, it was still way edgier than beyblades, digimon, or pokemon, and for those little kids that wanted to be "cool and edgy", it worked like a charm without upsetting parents, especially back in the days of cable tv, limited internet access, and the game being MUCH simpler to learn than it is today.

One choice I find interesting is that they still call Atem early on Yami Yugi or just Yami. Yami in Japanese means dark, implying that Atem, while still the good guy compared to Yami Marik and Yami Bakura, is still darker than regular Yugi, if not a more morally ambiguous character. This can be seen in the original during the duel in season 1 with the eliminator dude where in the end, Yami basically kills him.
But most scenes of Atem being this morally ambiguous character are completely removed or changed.
I find it interesting that they still call him Yami because all the other characters who are called Yami, like Yami Marik and Yami Bakura, are clearly the bad guys and I'm surprised 4kids didn't catch that possible relation.
What about when Bakura licks the eye after he steals it from Pegasus?
The funny thing is many of the incidents of censorship, such as the dark energy discs and building with a vortex to the shadow realm, weren’t fooling many children. The first time I saw the Arcana duel I remember looking on incredulously while thinking, “Uh, no, that thing is going to cut off the loser’s legs, but nice try.”

I had just been getting back into yugioh when I heard about Takahasi's death yesterday. I grew up with the manga and dub and now, clearly, I need to see the sub. I knew stuff was changed but WOW

I looked for a video of this RIGHT AFTER I saw Ep. 32 on Netflix. I thought it was really weird that a guy like Bandit Keith would just point his finger at Pegasus. I'm absolutely shocked now to find out that Yu-Gi-Oh! was originally a much darker show that the cartoon I watched as a kid. Thank you!
It always bugged me how the Arcana duel was so hmm how do I say it? Yellowish? As in everything in the dub is yellowed out and the characters look ill.
Yeah that duel was probably the most edited and changed duel in all of Yugioh in my opinion

I mostly prefer the original over the dub, but my favorite dub change is the reason Yami was holding back against Mai. In the original, he wasn't taking her seriously as a threat due to his pride and the fact she'd lost against Jonouchi earlier in the arc and against Anzu like yesterday. And that's fine for piling on about Yami's character flaws at that point to give him room to grow during the finale and going into the next arc, but I liked what the dub did way more, because in their previous Duel Yugi had just had to stop Yami from pushing Kaiba to kill himself, and it makes complete sense that he'd lose trust in Yami and start holding him back out of fear that he'd be willing to kill Mai or anyone else for the sake of winning and saving Yugi's grandpa. It's a surprisingly dark and delightful twist for the dub to make, and although the anime missed out on this entirely, I think it really helps build up to Yami's decision at the end of the arc in the manga to stop doing Penalty Games.
Sensoring the guns was the dumbest thing ever.

You can read the manga on the Libby downable app for free. All you need is a card from your local library. As for these issues I say blame it on the uptight parents who can't take a joke. Its not just 4kids doing this Foxkids and Disney did this as well. The last thing they need is to get sued over it because once again a bunch of uneducated people couldn't get what there kid was watching on TV. Just because your family wasn't uptight that's not the case for everyone.
Hopefully you do this type of vid for the other yugiohs. This was well done.
One of the funniest changes for me personally is in the dub when Yugi is fighting Seeker or whatever the Exodia guy's name is and "Seeker" starts monologuing in his head about how ''I will soon gather all 5 exodia pieces and win!" while looking at his hand and you can actually see all 5 pieces already there in his hand!
I've started watching the original Yu-Gi-Oh! and I'm slowly realizing how much changed between the original dub and the English dub. It's pretty eye-opening.
Finding out the shadow realm wasn’t real always messed me up when I found out years ago. But it surprised even more to find out that a 4Kids dub of ANY show actually added something cool.
It's nice to see all kinds of well-made YGO content mixed with VRAINS news and reviews, a nice change of pace. Good on you, Dylan!

I’ve known the shadow realm is a 4kids creation for years. But it still blows my mind because essentially they created something worse than death. I also love how in season 4 Joey punched Atem but it was censored in the English dub but Atem still ends up on the ground and as a kid I couldn’t understand how. Now I know tho!

In my opinion I like the concept of the shadow realm. It adds something to the show instead of just dying. I hope 4Kids doesn't dub the new yugioh. The new one sounds so cool without all the censorship
Yeah I hope they ease back on the censors for the new series. Honestly I didnt have too much of an issue with the shadow realm concept either, I felt like it kind of worked haha
Hey thanks for the reply. What's your opinion on having the show geared towards the kids that watched the first series of yugioh like the 90's kids instead of the younger kids now a days. This would mean that there could be less censorship, right and possibly a better show where it doesn't feel like the show is just for kids.

@@YugiohEverything What was stupid was how they used it and didn’t use it. In Yugi’s duel with Joey while he was under mind control the chains weren’t going to drag them into the shadow realm. They were going to drown. While when Yugi and Kaiba dueled the duo of rare hunters on the tower in the sub they would just fall to their deaths while in the dub the hunters claimed the glass was a divider between earth and the shadow realm.
There's even a scene that you've missed. But on the episode evil spirit of the ring. There was a scene where after joey as the flame swordsman destroyed the white magical hat, bakura grabs on to his chest like he has pain in his heart but on the 4kids version, it was cut and was replaced with bakura looking pissed

If I remember correctly, the Mai scene with them having dinner and Tea and the portable shower also cut out a part where Mai sees a cruise ship passing by and briefly goes into her past. And when they had the campfire dinner, there was cans of Pepsi in the original, but then I think they cut them out completely (idk, maybe 4Kids was afraid of getting sued by Pepsi?) and it just looks like Mai is raising her hand for no reason when she was actually drinking the Pepsi. At least these are changes I remember. Haven't seen the dub in a long time.

I know I’m late but when 4kids edits out most text, even the English words, it’s because they were making a global version that would be released not just in English. A lot of other language dubs use the 4K edits as a base, since it is cheaper to just 4k’s removed text instead of keep translating the original text for each dub.

You should do it for the other series as well, in 5ds theres a scene where in Crash Town where one of the audience members in a duel goes "Is that Joey Wheeler?" but isn't in the SUB. And, I always thought it was strange they removed the guns and didn't replace them, always looked strange :D

No he still did. The dub added lines to make it seem like he was going to get saved but then left his fate a little bit more unclear. But 3 duels later when he is a ghost I am pretty sure it is clear even in the dub that 'Kite" is dead! Honestly I think 4K Media did a pretty good job censoring that scene while keeping it as intact as they could get away with it. And honestly I think it can sound even sadder that Faker was trying to save his son but knew it was already too late.

Joey vs Kaiba ( A longer and more serious version,Red vs Blue Eyes would have been epic)
Yugi vs Joey ( A serious, final and satisfying match, the Duelist Kingdom duel was amazing, the one from battle city was alright but this would have beeeeen so awesome)

One of the silliest changes was in the Yugi vs Kaiba duel at the Duelist Kingdom tournament. In the original Kaiba said he'd take a step backward for ever 100 points of damage he'd receive (basically implying he'd commit suicide if his LP reached 0). In the dub he claimed the shockwave from the attack would throw him off the building. A shockwave? from a hologram?

If anyone is interested, I stumbled upon a slip up by 4Kids while rewatching the series recently. During the Battle City finals, right before they draw the numbers for the first two duelists, there’s a shot of everyone (except for Marik, Odion, and Kaiba) looking at the lottery machine. If you look at Bakura’s arm (he’s in the upper right side of the shot), you can see the blood stain on the bandage from the stab wound. Any other time during the finals the bandage is completely white (where they edited out the blood).
People who have taken Yu-gi-oh more seriously if it was not heavily censored.
It might still be considered at DBZ / Naruto level honestly, maybe thats a little far but a lot of anime fans think of Yugioh as a "joke" anime which is a shame really
When I tell anime fans I watch yugioh they look at me puzzled...The censors killed yugioh's credibility.
@@TheXFireball Not really Naruto still failed even without being censored as did Bleach. This was largely due to the fact that these animes were too long and never changed out there main cast of characters.

It was actually mentioned once or twice out of the original. Just not that often. 4Kids actually didn't pull the term out of thin air, they just expanded on it _a lot._
I wish they would redub the subbed version of Yugioh again.
