Had a 72 Galaxie 500 with 400 and C6. 18-22 mpg. Thought I was smart when I got rid of it. Stopped thinking that about 20 years ago. Being an individual who lives up north, putting your C6 into second could be very helpful getting your Ford to move in slippery conditions.
@ That is a good question. I bought this 460 expecting 8mpg. The first tank was 5mpg! Didn’t buy it for its economy tho. Just like buying a Ford Excursion.
@@HammerWrench That’s one way of looking at it. I just remember my Dad with his 96 F350 with a 460 being glad he had the ZF5 with the overdrive, although his was more of a daily driver while not towing his 5th wheel, rather than just being his time to time tow rig.
My grandpa had a 67 galaxie 4 door, 428 and it had a push-pull switch on the dash. Once we got out onto the highway, it got pulled out and the overdrive unit that replaced the failsafe would engage. I was only 9, but i remember holding the light and asking about everything that i saw when he checked and greased everything under that car.he passed away in 2008, and his oldest son got the car. It still had showroom look to it. Beautiful chrome and perfect interior. He had an f250, 67 to 73, but it had an underdrive gear reduction unit in it. The divorced t case was a design i had on my 75 hi boy. I looked for a unit like the overdrive for it, but they were too hard for a 16 year old to save up for while paying all my own bills. I worked that 75 hard, and had the transmission rebuilt, upgrades, and put in a new, modern trans cooler and electric fan. The guy that built the transmission for me built it, "like a diesels", as he said. He had done transmission work for racers and my family for 40 years, ao i trusted his word. I have to say, i put a hot 390 in that truck, and i abused it hard. Just like a young guy with something to prove often does. I burnt up an FMX, and a C4. Im pretty sure the FMX was on its way out when i got it.
A stout trans indeed. Had one in my '78 F250 4x4 but it just wasnt any fun on the street. Ripped it out in 2019 and threw in an E4OD with an MSD controller. Hands down the best mod I ever did to the truck! In a heavy vehicle, over drive is just about useless without having torque converter lockup as you're just cooking the fluid with all that slip.
Excellent info, I have a bone stock '73 Q code Mach 1 that has the C6 transmission. I have been going back and forth on putting in an overdrive transmission but don't want to make a permanent modification. Is there any cutting or welding involved in the overdrive transmission swap?
Great question, Mario! Swapping your C6 for an overdrive transmission like an AOD or 4R70W can usually be done without permanent modifications. You might need to adjust the crossmember, modify the driveshaft, and tweak the linkage, but no cutting or welding is typically required.
Thank you, Bullnose. I have a 1974 Ford F100 with a 460 and I was told Cruise-O-Matic transmission. it will shift from 1 to 3 under 20mph. I don't think that is supposed to happen. My question is, is the Cruise-o-matic a C6? Would I get better performance with a C6? Thanks for taking my comments.
If your ’74 F100 has a 460, it’s almost certainly already running a C6-Ford often called their automatics “Cruise-O-Matic,” but that’s just a marketing term. The quick 1-3 shift could be due to a vacuum modulator or valve body issue, or it might be blowing through 2nd so fast you barely notice. Gear ratios can play a role here too-numerically lower rear-end gears (like 3.00 or 2.75) can cause quicker shifts, while higher ratios (like 3.50 or 4.10) stretch out the time spent in each gear. No need to swap if it’s already a C6; just check the vacuum line, modulator adjustment, or consider a mild shift kit for crisper shifts. Hope that helps!
I have one in a 89 f150 that has over 400k on it other then yearly fluid changes its had nothing done to it. Been plowing snow with it for over 10 years now the body is falling apart but that engine and transmission keeps on going.
I recently purchased a 1979 Lincoln Mark V Cartier edition and the transmission doesn’t go into reverse or drive. The only -2- gears that work are 1 st and 2nd. What type of transmission is in my Lincoln with the 6.6 engine? I live in New Mexico and Im trying to find a mechanic to work on it. So far. Dead ends. No one wants to work on my car
If you go to find one behind a 80s or 90s F-150 or e150 or even the 250, behind the 300 inline 6 they are almost all bad, you can spend months looking for a replacement. So much for a built transmission for a V8, the 6 cylinders seem to freaking kill them. Marketplace and Craigslist are full of f e and big block Ford versions that are good and cheap, the small block Ford and the 6 cylinder version... I've yet to come across a good one.

Hey Ed, just subscribed to your channel because you sound like you know your shit when it comes to fords. Thank you! I’ve had my 83 F250 7.5 for about a month and thought 4th gear wasn’t working. Now I know it doesn’t have one!🛠️
I wonder if you can get a E40D for better mileage? Or a ZF5? They both have overdrive.

Perfect timing. Im about to pull mine from my 88 7.3 F250 4x4. I added a Gear Vendors Unit, made my C6 a SIX SPEED Automatic with OD.
Would like more details on that conversion, worth the costs?

FMX transmissions are tough too
They can be. I put a shift kit in every one I've had. The fault in the fmx tends to be that buttery smooth shift. It wears those clutch packs more.

dont forget you can change first and second gear ratios with a planetary from a 4R110 transmission
