Welcome to BullnoseGarage, where I dive headfirst into the world of fixing, modding, and improving my 1985 Ford F-150, a classic “Bullnose” truck. If you’ve got a Bullnose (or any F-150), this is the place for you-especially if you’re like me and just learning the ropes!
I’m not a pro mechanic by any stretch-just an enthusiastic amateur who’s not afraid to get his hands dirty (even if I’m still figuring out what all the tools do). This channel is about sharing my journey, mistakes, and all, with the hope that you can learn something useful-or at least get a good laugh!
What to Expect:
How-tos for folks just getting into older trucks and DIY repairs
Tips and tricks for working on 1980-1986 Ford F-150 Bullnose trucks
Reviews and advice on tools, parts, and mods
Overviews of engines, transmissions, and other parts and systems found in Ford trucks
And of course, my ongoing build: swapping in a 400 - 500 hp stroked 351 Windsor engine and giving this Bullnose a new lease on life!

$15 ‘Retro’ Stereo in a Classic Truck [w/Bluetooth!] – Surprisingly Good or Total Junk?
Hey folks, Ed here from Bullnose Garage! Today’s project is a stereo install in the '85 Ford F-150, and we’re doing it on a tight budget with this $15 head unit I found on Amazon. It’s supposed to have Bluetooth and hands-free calling, but honestly, it’s so light and plain-looking I’m wondering if it even works! This video is for anyone who wants to add a Bluetooth stereo to their classic truck without breaking the bank.
In this install, I’m pairing the head unit with a dual-voice coil dash speaker designed specifically for single-speaker setups in old vehicles. At nearly $80, this speaker is a bit pricey compared to the $20-$25 Amazon door speakers I’m also adding, but it should bring a richer sound to the cab by handling both left and right channels. We’ll go over how to remove door panels, install budget speakers, check wiring, and give some tips on avoiding rattle in these old truck doors.
Follow along to see if a budget stereo setup can transform your classic truck audio or if this little head unit’s better suited as a paperweight! Leave your thoughts or questions in the comments, and let’s find out if this Amazon stereo is worth the $15 price tag!
Parts used:
Head Unit (Fenioke Bluetooth Single Din): amzn.to/40optsI
Harness: amzn.to/3UtIR3W
Door Speakers (JVC CS-J620 6.5"): amzn.to/3YJl02M
Dash Speaker (Retro Manufacturing D-572 5x7): amzn.to/4fleCUL
Door Clips: amzn.to/3UxekCm

Had one and a Chevy 250 str 6, both were outstanding great torque at low rpm better overall than any V8 ever made
I just got 1973 forklift that has this motor, it needs a little love, I figured I’d start here. I’m a mopar guy, I got a slant 6 in my ‘67 Power Wagon…
Had a sky blue 74 T-Bird with a white interior and power everything and this motor. Would bury the speedometer and wanted to keep running...more pedal left!
Hey Ed, could you do a video on the internals of the bullnose glove box latch and how to reassemble it after its taken apart
Do a Cleveland video.
The Cleveland is definitely on the list. Thanks for the suggestion!
i bought my '88 F350 in October of 1987. 1 ton flat bed with 7.5 EFI and 5 speed manual transmission. years later, for some unknown reason, i was under the truck and saw the trans was a Mitzubishi with a label saying "do not repair this transmission. send it back for replacement". makes me wonder what kind of research they were doing because i would load over 2 tons of cement and sand on this truck every day to get my jobs done and never had an issue. it's still sitting here in my back yard. i'm waiting on my new plasma cutter to get here to chop it up. lol
While all other engines in the 80s had rod knock and blowby, the Ford 300 straight 6 lived.
Glad I found this video, about to tear it out of our old motorhome before its sold for scrap, comes with a C6 transmission
Thanks Ed! The theme song is awesome! My 81 Bullnose still has the factory am fm cassette player but unfortunately it is not working. I appreciate the information and the link.
I'm guessing this will sound like ass...
I have twin 460s in my boat…scheduled upgrade from 340 hp to 750hp.38 ft boat
I must say the Block looks similar to a Big Block Chevy
I have a Super Duty 534 Ford I am willing to sell .
@Mike: I remember those in the T-950’s back in the mid sixties, very powerful, very thirsty.
Ive never seen a 300 with a 4 bolt main only 2 bolt mains but crankshaft in other versions can be forged.
What was the compression ratio for the F250's that were fuel injected in the late 80's-90's have? And were they roller? Did Ford up them just a bit like other manufacturers?
I'm a ford man love the 300 6 but it's a tuff fight between the big 3 i6s the slant dodge was a very close competitor than the 250 chevy in my opinion
Great video!
The Ford 385 big block is the best American big block ever built in my book. Most popular? No. Best to own and modify? You bet.
Good shit brother,,subbed instantly! See you at 100k!!!
The fastest vehicle I ever drove was Ford PU. And I had a couple cars was pretty fast, but that F100 !!
The 460 is all right for towing, but the FE is a better engine and can handle a lot of abuse. They are as heavy as a diesel. I weighed my FE and it makes 510 hp and 488 ft lbs and weighs 518 lbs with iron heads and aluminum intake.
I dropped a 460 in my crown vice swapped 56 f100 shop truck. Had to do a little bit of modification to the fire wall. Great video on the 460.
I have an 89 F 250 I bought 2years ago for short trip hauling for my construction company. I put a Banks intake and exhaust kit on it, really woke it up. Then a BBK throttle body and TSF injectors. Starts and runs much better with a slight power gain. Advancing the timing to 14 degrees made a very noticeabl difference too. This truck has a slide in dump bed and I pull a 15k dump trailer occasionally. Its been great. I'm planning on rebuilding it in a year or two and would appreciate any comments. To keep it emission compliant I have to stick with the stock efi set up, which means stock heads. I know there are shops out there that can port the stock heads. I can also put a mild towing hauling cam in it and increase compression. As far as I know that's all I can do with stock efi. If it can be stroked or anything else, I would appreciate comments.
I never realized how over square the 460 was.
I didn't have break and caliper grease but I had something temtrol aluminum anti-seize compound which I just put on the back of both brake pads ever so lightly and on the piston face.
I'm building turbo kits for the 300s, will blow away any v8 smaller than a 460 while sipping fuel and unparalleled powered Should look into the boss 300 from 1970, made about 625hp which the small blocks of the time could not do
It won’t be tougher than the mopar leaning tower of power 6 or the La 318. Sorry those were the toughest engines ever built. The ford is a great motor…
276,000 mi in a 96 f250 and still running strong
78 or 79 they changed the pan rail from scalloped out on the Lincoln blocks to a stronger straighter surface. The Cylinder Bores came down a little further into the crankcase as well making the Truck blocks a little more desirable for strokes over 4.150. Stroker builds up to 557” can be had easily with little to no grinding required. Add a set of Motorsport CJ, Trick Flow or John Kasse heads and you will have a serious beast. The current engine in our 1970 F250 started life as a low compression 79 truck motor. We used a cast steel Eagle 4.300 crank with BBC 6.700” rods and Custom flat tops for 9.6:1 with the Edelbrock non CJ heads. We topped the engine off with a Weiand Stelth dual plane which is a very very underrated manifold with a huge plenum and a large bore 4150 carb. With a Comp 270S cam and their solid lifters with surface oiling. This engine idles down to a mild lope at 750-800 and has a split personality. Bottom end torque hits like a sledge hammer and the power extends out to around 5500 before flattening out. What I learned from my build so that you don’t have to research on your own is 1) Choose a cam a step longer duration than you normally would. 2) A quality head rebuild with new Valves and hardened seats done by a good shop can cost more than a set of Aluminum heads. Had I known them what I know now I would have opted for the TrickFlow 320s over the Edelbrock Performer RPMs but this particular engine was built to tow, not race. 3) Exhaust is super important, a good set of long tube headers and 2.5 - 3.0” minimum H pipe setup is the key to breathing. Over the stock exhaust manifolds, the gains feel like you added 4 more cylinders everywhere.
My F250 with a 460 EFI has a born on date of 1988.
back when gas was .70c to 1.00 a gallon. today youd go broke daily driving a 460
My Lincoln didn’t do too bad with a 2.74:1. gear in it. You were rarely on the secondaries around town and it turned less than 2000 on the freeway at cruise.
460 didn’t go into any trucks until the mid 70s, it was pretty much Lincoln only until 73 or so when the FEs disappeared and the 400s started taking their places in cars.
Any update on the tire lettering?
As a matter of fact, yes there is. th-cam.com/video/_WGbzezO_v8/w-d-xo.html
Mine is gutless and gets 7 mpg.
Fix That ! What Rear Gear ? & Traz.?
Back in the day, I put a 460PI in my 76 high boy. That truck would run.
Dude, don’t you have the straight 6 in your truck? Stick with that. Now’s not the time for gas guzzling. We’re having a bullshit energy crisis and fake voting taking place. Regards.
Have a 96 CCSB 4x4 7.3 with the ZF5 manual transmission, and a 91 SCSB 4x4 4.9 with the 5 speed. I use the little F150 for weekend trips to the dump and just to cruise around in. Truck rides great, easy to drive and my wife loves it too. The 7.3 does the heavy lifting, and is great when we need to tow and haul the whole family around too. Haven’t had much trouble with either.
So we have a winch mounted up to slip right into a receiver and a receiver on the front bumper of the truck so we can take it off and put it on the trailer, then we built a short stand to bolt to the shop floor to help get cars in for the same reason. It's pretty handy being able to move that thing around and we only had to buy one winch for everything 👍
One of these with *three* IDF40 Weber carbs? Headers? Lots of internal work to make it run *especially* well?
Pretty dang nifty setup Ed. 😊
Thanks! Let's hope it works.
Awesome to see my shifter and short throw pics in here!!
In your video, at the 1:56 mark, you show an NP435 hanging by a chain. What did this come out of? Was a custom main shaft installed? I see the side tag with the name Cohen and Sons. It seems to have been set up with a short main shaft to bolt directly (or with a fairly thin adapter) to a transfer case. I wish to put a NP435 in my CJ5, but length is a problem as far as driveshaft angle. It has a Dana 20 transfer case. I am considering having a main shaft fabricated by a shaft shop while I make the 1.5" adapter to mate it to the D20. Any info you can offer would be appreciated.
Those AI pics are giving me the creeps.
I can't stand the AI crap, it's nonsensical. There's plenty of good artists or just photographs out there.
I like my 83 f150 4x4 with the old i6 and np435
Check valve , not a ball valve
Honestly this is inspiring me to do the same to my 2000 f150 really miss how she looked when my dad got it back from the paint shop but time has taken its toll with her paint
Now how does the bleeder valve recognize when you’re trying to bleed and just using normal brake function? Wouldn’t the bleeder valve leak fluid once the air is all out if it’s autonomous?
it”s like a normal bleeder it just has a check valve
@@arrow9110 so to my understanding, you’d un screw it, pump your brakes then retighten?
Omg. I’ve lost faith in humanity. Lololololol
@@alejandroespino1998just like normal bleeder. You loosen it only a couple turns to allow the bleeding port to access the pressurized fluid. Once bled… tighten it back down.
@@alejandroespino1998 yes
Is it dangerous to loose the straw in a cylinder . I shoot that in my boat engine , is not always easy , I worried about the straw could be injected in the motor when I spray ?
Im finding out there very expensive to overhaul
Hey folks, after doing some research it turns out that the ZF5 was never offered in the Bronco from the factory. It's still a popular swap for Broncos though. Thanks again for keeping me honest!
Broncos 5.0 & 4.9s had a mazda transmission. They didn’t have a zf5
@@josenoyola9851 true. And anything bullnose didn’t have a zf5. They were introduced in 87. Bullnose 80-86. Cool swap though
Thanks for the correction. I'll pin a comment so folks know I made that mistake.
