About 6 years ago I built one of these and swapped it into my '79 F 350 to replace the C6. I got a core from a friend who builds transmissions and went at it. The transmission works great, unloaded mileage improved about 20% and it made the truck so much more drivable on the interstate with overdrive and a lock up converter. Tips: Get the ATSG books that shows all of the upgrades and do all of them to your transmission. My core was a 1990 so I upgraded the front pump, OD planetary, Forward planetary, center support, etc, etc. None of the parts were very expensive. Use a Tugger kit from Transgo, use a large cooler and an upgraded torque converter.
I’ve had several trucks with this transmission and I’ve had fantastic luck. In fact, the E4OD in my truck now is on its 3rd truck. I did replace the converter when I put it in this particular truck just as a precaution, since Ford is no stranger to torque converter failures. A good reman converter from a reputable company is good insurance.
I put a 521 in my ‘77 MkV. I kept the 2.50 final drive and rebuilt the C6. She spins around 2200RPM at 70mph. Having the OD would prolly be around 17-1800.
@@ProjectFairmont 2.50? i thought mine was low at 2.80! I thought about a gear vendors overdrive but I've got a few OBS parts trucks and one has the exact transmission i need so it should be cheaper in the end
Ford never officially announced a reformulation of Mercon V. This likely means extensive testing showed it was compatible, but the lack of clear communication has led to confusion. It may have been reformulated, it makes sense, but without confirmation from Ford it's just speculation.
If you’re living out west where it gets hot, and the mountain roads are steep you know how miserable this transmission is. It’ll get smoked just driving up mountain roads in the summer completely unloaded because of heat. OBS trucks, especially the 7.3 running aftermarket intercoolers simply don’t have enough space to add appropriate cooling capacity and air flow for this transmission. Swapping to a ZF5 or ZF6 is a much better way to go in my opinion.
@@daciefusjones8128I’ll take “things that haven’t happened” for $1000 😂. I’ve owned 19 of those trucks been working on them since they were new and there’s absolutely no way you’ve done that unless it’s been on a trailer as you’ve pulled it with something else. Come at someone else with your nonsense.
Ford can't build automatic transmissions. it's why I have demanded manual transmissions in Ford's that I have owned. up untill I got completely fed up with Ford products. no more Ford's for me.

Gonna be sticking one of these in a 71 Lincoln as its the only 4 speed that bolts to a 460

IF trucks are ever built better Ford will build them.

mercon v is a synthetic that makes it compatible with everything.

been running mine all over Nevada , Utah, Arizona and Wyoming for 27 years and no problems but some of us just know how to drive and some don't.
