    00:00 Introduction
For some reason, certain decades seem to correlate with a specific set of style mistakes.
By your 30’s, many men are settling into careers, buying homes, and having families, all of which change who you are as a person. Even if that isn’t your particular path, we all grow and change with time, and our style should evolve and change with us.
    You’re a full-fledged adult, and as such, a certain degree of maturity should be in your style;
where you look youthful but also age-appropriate. Anything too young makes you look like you haven’t grown up!
Finding your own style that suits you, looks good on you, and makes you feel good should be your first priority. But, it’s hard to see ourselves clearly sometimes, so we put together a list of ways that men sometimes fall into habits - that aren’t necessarily deliberate choices - that can negatively affect your overall look at this particular stage of life.
6 Style Mistakes 30-Somethings Should Avoid
01:12 1. Wearing the Same Outfits As In High School
You're in your 30s, so you probably don't look like you're in your teens anymore. Save your old clothes for painting and doing other household errands but not for day-to-day wear. These would include those baggy straight leg jeans, graphic tees, and oversized polos and t-shirts.
02:50 2. Not Knowing Your Personal Style
Finding out what looks good on you and what works for you is the most important. This will help you become a more effective shopper where you'll get to spend less money and be happier with what you purchase.
Take some time and answer the following questions:
How do I want to feel when I get dressed?
What is important to me with regards to style?
    What is my budget?
What consistently makes me feel good when I wear it?
What gaps in my knowledge are preventing me from the wardrobe I want?
What mistakes do I consistently make with purchasing that I later regret?
What gaps in my wardrobe are preventing me from the look that I want?
Do I struggle with too many choices or do I not have enough choices?
Do I want to do this on my own or consult other people and other resources?
Take the answers to all these questions and write them down. It will create something like a Venn diagram that will lead you to your ideal look.
    04:00 3. Carrying a Backpack
If you're in your 30s, your clothing and taste have hopefully changed since your college and high school days. But the backpack is a bit of a remnant of that time.
04:29 4. Not Getting Dressed Everyday
What you wear at home should be all about what feels good to you but we've actually found value in getting dressed every day.
    04:50 5. Wearing Immature Jeans
Jeans, unlike chinos or other dress pants age much more quickly over time. The trends for distressing, details, and washes make jeans evolve more quickly.
    05:24 6. Wearing Immature Shoes
This can mean wearing flip-flops or sandals to places other than the beach. Like a lot of people here in the midwest tend to do sometimes, wearing dirty trainers someplace other than doing yard work. Your shoes are a key place to be able to show that your style is as mature as you are.

I know you guys have an odd issue with backpacks, but for some of us, a briefcase just won't cut it. Almost no company makes laptop appropriate luggage for my motorcycle, so the backpack is part of the ride. Additionally, when I commute via train/bus, my briefcases are always an asymmetrical annoyance, but the backpacks get the job done. I'm in my late 40s now, and I realize the backpack is not appropriate for white collar fashion, but practicality wins out on this one.

It's true. I agree with many of the things they discuss on this channel, but not the backpacks. There is no replacement for a backpack. I don't take one everywhere I go, but when I transport my laptop, which I do rarely, it's backpack or nothing.
I know a guy who takes two bags with him everywhere he goes, back pack and messenger bag, and while I wouldn't say he really tries to dress up, he certainly doesn't look like a school boy.
I'd say, if you are wearing a backpack and you look like a school boy then you need to get a better back pack. Try leather.

    1. I still have the same general style as in high school (but not the same pieces, +30 kg is to blame). In my 40s I no longer wear ties with teddy bears, I still did that some times in my early 30s.
    2. I still have the same hair style.
    3. I still love backpacks. They look strange with a suit, they do wrinkle it and one can get seriously sweaty underneath, but they are comfortable to carry around heavy stuff and/or a lot of stuff. One definitely should get a business level backpack though.

  • @saiyajedi
    @saiyajedi 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

One other point about hairstyling in your 30s: This is the point where most men’s hairlines start to visibly recede and/or become thinner overall, so it’s important to adapt to these changes rather than keep with a hairstyle that will accentuate what you’ve lost, rather than compliment what you’ve got. (Don’t try to hide it either, of course; a combover is an even worse look because it shows you’re not comfortable in your own skin.)

This is something I tell people who are working from home all of the time: get dressed like you're going to the office. Take your shower, brush your teeth, shave, do all of those things and put the right clothes on your body. Doing so keeps that rhythm going in the brain and will most certainly help you when the day comes when we start going back to the office. Too many people who are rolling out of bed and over to the desk with their PJs still on talk about needing to nap at certain times of the day, etc. Their brain is still in bed-mode. Get up, get moving, set the pace for the day.

To me I think one the thing he is also saying is if you get up and get dressed starting your day even if your mostly home is to just get dressed. It will serve all the purposes. Just as long as you don’t have to go DIY something or mow the lawn anything like that. But if you gotta go somewhere running out the door, your dressed and ready and don’t have to think about it. Your ready to go just about anywhere, even if your mostly at home or in and out that day,

I find flat out bashing backpacks quite unproductive. In the modern day, the lines of fashion are never so clear-cut. I'd rather see suggestions for outfits with which backpacks do go well, yet still within the classical style. These probably won't be three-piece suits, but a good leather backpack from a well-respected brand (see the "backpack" tag on The Rake website, for example) should definitely go with smart casual. Suede chukka boots, tweed pants, a sweater, suede bomber and a good-looking backpack. Just one of many possibilities. It is possible to argue backpacks don't go with suits or highly formal wear, sure. But suggesting to avoid backpacks if one is over 30 is a different statement entirely.

That's great, but now do one for people who are 50ish, who want to look both dapper and age-appropriate in a variety of social situations (not just the office).
Sure, many of us can afford nice suits, but you can't live in suits all the time, and most casual clothes being sold today aren't age-appropriate for the 45-55 year age group.

    • @ardentdfender4116

I’m in my 40’s i do understand it. But I’ve always tried to dress well and at the office having invested in good dress cloth. I find it’s far easier to just dress well already having good dress shirts, knit shirts, polos and linens. Just leave the T-Shirt at home. But if you’ve already invested in good dress cloth for the office besides suits, you should have good cloth to Sharp casually you can wear to anywhere. It’s just maybe changing out a cloth piece or two make it look more dress down casual.

Still got to disagree with you on that backpack issue. As someone who has nerve and tendon issues in my right hands and arms from a lot of guitar hauling in my 20s, I use backpacks to haul laptops and other daily travel necessities without causing neck strain like a briefcase or side bag can. Using non-synthetic materials like leather or a dark wash canvas and suede can give backpacks a more classic look. Generally though upper body health > how much y'all hate backpacks.

The part about wearing a backpack hit me, because I wear one almost daily.
But I still haven't found more stylish solution, that is still practical, for carrying a laptop (and groceries) while cycling to work (or to a shop) and back. Of course if I went to the office by a car, I wouldn't wear one. And yes; I have to take my laptop from work to home every time, so I can't just leave it there.

I can be ready to go in 10 minutes if I need to be anywhere all of the sudden, which is not common at all. Otherwise all great advice! They have videos for sweaters, jeans & chinos and other non-suit items. A quick summary:
      1) Clothing should fit perfectly
      2) For shoes, leather is the best
      3) Collars are awesome.
Check their videos on this specifics for more details. Follow those as much as your budget allows, and you'll do fine.

Something I’ve noticed is that generally all you have to do as you age is to make your choices subtler and you end up fine. You take the big silhouette-effecting style choices and reduce them to the minor details of your outfits and suddenly your style has evolved to the next level.

I know this may get lost in the sea of comments, but I would love if you guys did an "Is It Worth It?" video on the 618 Perfecto Motorcycle Jacket by Schott NYC. I know it may be a little off brand for GG, but the history of the jacket is pretty interesting, and it's rooted in the classic era in which you guys so expertly cover.

This seems to be pointed towards young Americans but no biggie , anyone can learn from this including me , some changes need to be made , I realised I am way more mature than a lot of men and women my age that look good , so they shaped their exterior but forgot about whats inside , maybe you’re in the same situation like me , in the words of Patrick B : “ you can always be thinner , look better “

I agree to an extent. For instance I can't wear a blazer and leather loafers because that looks exceeds my level of profession in life. Also, V necks are awful no matter who you are. Please drop the V necks!

I’m 28, my brother is 30 and for the life of me, I cannot get him to care about his sense of style. He has zero interest in clothes or first impressions. I’ve just cleaned out my closet and am working toward a more tailored look myself. It’s funny you use the word uniform because that’s exactly what it seems like is about to happen in my closet. I’ve found certain silhouettes that look great on me so I’m just gonna invest in more of those types of pieces.

Personally, I don't like modern clothes. Too drab, boring and everyone wears the same things as everyone else. I still wear my high school clothes and get compliments. I've also bought clothes from earlier decades (80s/early 90s) not only because they're so well made they, look brand new but because nobody else wear those styles anymore. Neon colors and the preppy look suits me best. I look too drab in muted and neutral colors. Neon green is my signature color!

There is absolutely nothing wrong with using a high quality leather backpack. Idk why you guys harp on that. Sure don’t wear it with a suit or sports coat, but otherwise it’s perfectly fine. Or even a canvas and leather backpack like the ones that Brunello cucinelli has.

Hey, I have some questions that affect me quite a bit:
    1. I love wearing turtle necks in the winter and fall, as well as I love wearing shirts with knitvests and sweater vest. Is it possible to wear turtle necks with those kind of knitwear vests also or is that a nogo?
    2. Im a scarf person. My favourite season is fall and winter because I love wearing overcoats with sarfs and boots.
To this day I still never wanted to wear either ties or bow ties on a regular basis because Im just a 20yo student, so I always thought about getting some Ascots since I always wanted to have those. I just like the way they look. But can I wear a scarf when Im wearing an ascot around my neck as well? I know it sounds kinda weird haha. :D
    3. I would love to wear high waisted pants and chinos but I have no idea how to get them. On Websited like Hockerty you can measure them for high waist since recently but Im not sure how good their service for pants really is. Does someone know a retailer or a brand that also has high waisted pants and/or chinos?
