  • Recently with all of the interest in defensive shotguns, some people have asked us how we feel about Mossbergs and Remingtons? So wanting to get back out to the range with my M590A1 anyway, in this video, we just chat a bit about my pump shotguns and why I have the ones that I do.
Featured 12 gauges include a 500 Retrograde with heatshield, 590 Shockwave with metal parts, & M590A1 with heatshield & custom furniture. Also for comparison, a Remington 870 Wingmaster.

The armory on my ship has a bunch of old 500’s. After years of questionable maintenance by sailors the safety has a tendency to slide back into the safe position under recoil. Very annoying to thumb the safety after every shot. That being said, my personal 590 has never had a single issue.

I own a vintage 870 wingmaster, and an express. They both gather dust because of how much more I prefer my mossbergs. I'd rather take my maverick 88 out any day. Here's why.
    1. Cheaper parts
    2. Easier to work on
    3. Can be fixed in field
Anyone who has broke the ejector on the Remingtons will know my pain... mossberg design >>>> Remington. That's why the marines chose it over Remington or Winchester...

My first repeater shotgun was a Mossy 500, It was crap, never fed right would only feed 2.75" shells and only if you cycled the action violently. The safety broke off 3 times. You might have to knock the rust off a Remington but they work.

I used to own the Mossberg 590A1 and Remington 870 Express. They both have their respective pros and cons. The Mossberg reeks of feeling cheap, clunky, and crude. The Remington though it feels more solid, has plenty of sharp edges. I also had to polish the chamber and upgrade the extractor. On the Mossberg, the magazine spring is weak as it came out of the box, I had to buy a stronger Wolff brand. I also had to polish several parts. Push comes to shove, I favor the Remington 870 more, though not by much. This is just from one man's perspective. Buy what you prefer.

I became a naturalized citizen in 2012. Shortly after, my father in law got me a Mossenberg 500 28" and i love it. I've fondled a few Remmies and I see that they are smoother and not as rattly but I'm not comfortable committing to one. I also have a 500 Tactical Persuader (Heat shield, 8 shot and Ghost ring sights) that serves as my bedside shotty. I think after watching this, I'll be sticking with my Mossenbergs and after watching that video you did on the Benelli SuperNova Tactical LE (holy shit i want that shotgun so bad), i will add one of those too!! great video!!

You're entitled to your opinion but the Remington 870 is a superior shotgun. I could write a book on this subject but I don't have the time right now to type a detailed report. I'm an armorer and I'm former law enforcement. Over the years I have been to countless law enforcement departments/agencies, security agencies, and armored truck companies, and they all used Remington shotguns. Even the army used Remington shotguns and there are many reasons why.

870 is made from sturdier materials and imo feels a little smoother in my hands so I went with that. However the 590 is still a solid choice, especially being cheaper. If you don't mind the difference in feel between holding the two shotguns, I'd pick the Mossberg.

I own both a 870 tactical (express model prior to Remington going under) and a 590A1 and about the only thing the 870 has over the 590 IMO is ease of reassembly. Not the the 590 requires a smith the take apart and clean or anything but it's just a bit more simple with the 870. Aside from that, the 590 wins in terms of function and reliability IMO. The QC is better on the 590 vs my 870. I've had to replace the cheap MIM extractor on my 870 to correct the failure to extract issues and the barrel on it looks like it was bored with a dull butter knife. The barrel on my 590 is very smooth and polished and the extractors are renowned for their reliability. Spent shells literally project from the 590 whereas they sort of just tumble out of the 870. Now, maybe the old police issue Wingmaster 870s are a different story but that's not what Remington was making the last several years. Hopefully the new owners of Remington under the name RemArms are making things better.

I have a Remington 870 Wingmaster made in 1959. The original owner bought it in 1960 and passed away in 2013 or '14, whereupon I bought it from his estate, making me its second owner in its 61 year existence. I got back into 3-Gun competition 13 months ago and didn't feel like spending money on a semi-auto shotgun. Since this is my only 12 gauge shotgun, it's what I use, even though my score might be better with the auto. I've been curious about the 590A1 and am considering picking one up to compare and contrast. My fear is that I'll like it more than my 870 and then I won't shoot the old girl anymore! First world problems...

I own both but between the two I choose Benelli, j/k although I do like Benelli's better than either. I'm in the Mossberg camp because of the ergonomics you mentioned. Safety, slide release and the big one... the shell lifter. I catch my finger every time I load a 12ga 870. Probably why the only 870 I own is a 20ga tactical model. Doesn't rip all the skin off my thumb like the 12ga one does.

Really liked it, the feature that keeps the lifter up out of the way when loading was pretty slick, and although I never used it the button to open the action without picking up a round from the tube was cool too. Maybe I'll track down a Nova LE model eventually as a replacement. Also Misha I've emailed a few times about the PE90 to the OBA gmail address but haven't gotten a reply, thanks!

As a lefty, both the safety and the slide release are much easier to manipulate. Plus the Remingtons would jam up nearly every other time we took them out. Never had a problem with the Mossbergs. @Mishaco
Mossberg is WAY better than Remington, let me explain myself.
    .
The first firearm I purchased was a Winchester 1300 Defender, back in 1992. Sold it, got an 870PM. Sold that, and some time later I bought my first Mossberg; which I still have.
I prefer Mosseberg over Remington for the following reasons.
    (5, 4, 3, were covered in video, I did not hear 2 or 1)
    .
    #5.) The action release.
On the Mossberg, I can hit it without breaking my grip on the stock The Remi is far forward of the trigger guard.
    #4.) No loading gate.
The Mossberg does not have a loading gate. I have gorilla-mits, and always get pinched when loading a Remington. (side note: Not an issue with the Win-1300D)
    #3.) The safety.
On the Mossberg, I can manipulate it with my thumb if I'm shooting right or left handed.
    #2.) The number of extractor(s)
The Mossberg had dual extractors, the Remi's only have one. I had the extractor, in my 870MP, break and I was left with a very expensive club.
#1) FATAL FLAW with the Remington !!!
IF you break the ejector in your Remi, which I have seen first hand, IT IS NOT FIELD REPLACEABLE. (you are F-ed!!!)
In the Mossberg, you replace the ejector by removing a sloted-head screw, from inside the receiver.
In the Remington, the ejector is held in place by a blind screw. You'll have to...
--- drill out the old ejector screw
    --- replace the ejector
--- cut-off the head of the new screw
--- grind it flush with the receiver
--- refinish that side of the receiver
5 through 3 are design differences between Mossberg and Remington, but 2 and 1 are design "flaws" in the Remington.

    Misha --
would it be legal to have a "hilt"
for the shockwave (like an inverted
wraparound ski pole grip) giving added
    comfort/bracing for the thumb web
    and middle finger?

Legally I believe so. It comes down to your local gun laws of your state/country. What your describing is essentially a molded pistol grip. By definition the shockwave not being a rifle stock has a pistol grip. So if you can have a molded grip in your region sure. I'm not a legal expert but I havent seen many laws in the lower 48 starting against it. Check your local law on molded grips first. On the topic I never got the bans on thumbhole stocks. It's just weird.

    Giggle intro 👍
I'd go with a Remington. New ejector, polished chamber, maybe changed ejector if I'd choose to re-coate the whole gun. Price would be equivalent to what the gun costed at the time when it was top notch. Better gun
(edit)There's a reason Mossbergs are not used for high volume shooting like skeet and trap.

    • @ulflyng
      @ulflyng 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@Oscar Jay All gun manufactorers today are cutting costs - unless you want to buy a 1300$ gun. And even there it's cost cutting that is primo goal. Mossberg have had serious QC probs too.
I honestly don't know how the real new ones are (after 2012). But I'd be as a minimum, changing the extractor to a non-MIM(max 20$) and polishing the chamber and chamber edges (0$) - look it up here on YT so you don't butcher the gun.
It seems the material of the reciever is the same as before, so the heart of the gun is sound.
Look at it this way. In the 50s the gun costed 70$, Time that with 10 and you'll see what the gun realisticly would cost today.
That gives you plenty room for making a fine gun yourself - or buying an 870police from the start.
I'd go with the Remington plus add-ons
But that's just my Tuppence Worth.

Jones not sure what Misha is referring to as my Maverick feels exactly like my Mossberg respective of the different parts like the push button safety and the basic forend. The action, trigger, and recoil all feel the same. Yeah the finish is a smidge worse, but that's really it on my examples. I enjoyed the vide. but don't think that I can agree with all the comets and opinions. I can tell you being a long lifetime duck hunter in the mud and muck of south Louisiana, if a professional duck guide is in the blind and he is using a pump shotgun, 9 out of 10 ten times he is using a Rem. 870. If you were to ask him what his next shotgun would be, his reply most often is, " If I ever ware this gun out, I will buy another 870" END of STORY. I am an auto man myself. Rem. 1100 was my first and most reliable shotgun. I now shoot a Browning Gold. My dream duck gun would be a Benelli SBE.

A 590A1 with no malfunctions! That's why the military adopted it. I also have a 590A1 without the ghost ring sight and forearm strap, maybe because I purchased it in October of 1997. Also 2ea. 500 Persuaders, one with an 18.5 in. barrel and one with a 20 in. barrel, and a Shockwave. I have not fired the Shockwave yet but the rest are super reliable. I also have a TAC-14 which I have never fired. I think the Mossbergs are superior to the Remingtons. Just my opinion. Thanks for another great informative video.
