This is educational and can be applied broadly given there is so much "want" vs what is really "needed" in our lives. The one thing I took out of my intro Economics classes was the theory of marginal utility, .. which goes something like this, "for each additional unit we acquire, we are that much less satisfied than with the previous unit". The more we acquire, the less satisfied we become. In this day of mass production and cheap goods even the relatively poor can become just as disatisfied as the rest of us. God bless you Nick, well done !

Same goes for me too Jack. A couple of years ago I had a small pension refund of £7000 (I'm in the UK where knife prices are nearly twice that of the US). I invested much of it in disposable alcohol (!) and the rest just got wasted. However, I did buy a few folders and one or two fixed blades with the remainder, meaning that I now have nine Spyderco's, five Benchmade's, a ZT, (all with fancy, up-market steels because I subscribed to the hype) and a few other cheaper brands. Unless I sell them all (probably for a fraction of what I paid), it's all been for nothing, as they sit comfortably in their boxes in my office drawer doing f**k all. The motto of of this long and drawn out reply is that "a (drunken) fool and his money are easily parted". And to think... I could have bought a really nice E-Class Mercedes. :(

The great thing about the modern knife world is that there are tons of options from which knifenuts can choose. If someone wants to get in on limited editions, sprints, etc there are plenty of opportunities. If someone wants to stick to high volume production models there are tons of choices. If someone wants to save up for a custom there are lots of choices. All someone has to do is choose the path that they can afford and makes them happy 🙌🏻 the consumer is Queen/king in this process. The consumer is free to buy or not buy regardless of marketing techniques. I don’t blame makers or manufacturers for their offers. I am always in charge of what I purchase or don’t purchase. 🙌🏻👌🏻

Hi Nick, how do you feel about brands like Great Eastern Cutlery? They don't seem to explicitly stated everything is small batch/short run for marketing purposes, but for all of the desirable models and handles there are never enough to go around. I'm torn. On one hand I get that they are limited by the nature of their manufacturing practices, but on the other hand it drives me crazy. Thanks, Nick!

  • @aerosaaber

Is it slightly more acceptable for benchmade to have a "first production" for 1000 knives and then go to regular production. Some folks do seem to covet the first production tag on their blade. But it doesn't seem to be a full on FOMO but maybe slightly. I got the PM2 w/ orange handles and black blade because I like the color combo.

Usually I get my fix by looking at it for about 10 minutes online, adding it to my cart, going to checkout and closing the tab (without paying). Granted it's not just pure insanity, sometimes I actually buy things that I take the time to add to my cart, but if I at least do that and close it out after I feel the decision is made that I decided not to pay for another gadget I really don't need.

“We put an astronauts butt in the corner” haha, but I totally understand the fear of missing out. For instance I have no need for a pm2 it’s too big for my needs and it’s (in my opinion) ugly, the para3 is, while still ugly, a way better knife for me. But I still feel like I want/almost need to join the pm2 club. I often try to buy limited edition knives mostly because I want the normal knife but black g10 is something I want very little of, so when it comes to colors the sprints/limited runs are my best chance. But I agree when I started giving myself permission to “miss out” it was really helpful.

I think the biggest of the production companies that uses FOMO is noted for having a hole in their blades. In a way it’s hard to fault them for this approach because folks like to feel ‘special’ by having something somewhat unique and the marketing approach has undoubtedly made their sales soar.
The downside of FOMO marketing is the loss of customers who are either just sick of it & abandon the brand or customers who don’t buy their ‘lesser’ versions of the knives because they’re not desirable any longer. It also puts a lot of their knives in a drawer unused which doesn’t necessarily translate to long term & appreciative customers who value the products beyond their resale value.

They told me that Y was just as good as X, but it wasn't. Y only had one leg, and kept falling over. I hated it, and I complained. My parents said in no uncertain terms that I couldn't have X.
So I'd ask why. And they'd say, _that's right!_ Hence, the therapy.

I am in both camps. I hate them, but at the same time when you get one, it feels kind of great knowing you having something "special". I know that feeling is kind of arbitrary, but I can't help feeling it lol. I mean when the 777 was showcased, it was love at first sight. The composite damascus and CF sub frame was a beautiful thing. It was expensive, so I even put aside money every month for it. I had a set of tabs of various knife sites that I would refresh multiple times daily. And after months of doing that [and the drama]. I couldn't get one, while some had like 7 of them. It sucks, and I invested so much time in anticipation, that I still feel a little crappy to this day lol.

As ironic as this sounds, I'm too poor to afford to pay attention to limited edition stuff and in general to purchase stuff under pressure. My money are too little and to precious to through around on stuff I can't research properly first! I felt something like this recently with all buzz around the SKX being discontinued. I almost went as far as asking a friend to borrow the money to get one while still available... But then I allowed myself a little more thinking time and decided that wouldn't be a smart move. There are so many modding sites for SKX that you can build one out of spare parts should you really one one... So, I just relaxed and went on with my business. Plenty of other, more meaningful, projects to take on!

Nick I think you’re looking at this all wrong. The fact that the knife is an exclusive limited run means you can purchase it try it out and sell it and at least get your money back. It’s a win-win. I like it and I hope it continues. I do not care for the people who buy knives just with the intention of selling them but that’s just a free market we can’t stop that.

Busse Combat knives and Spyderco use this too much. I freaked wanting HAP 40, actually did get my favorite model in it and stopped freaking. Delica Wharncliffe variant. I have plenty of folders. Buying fixed blades for steel is fussy. Design counts, keeping it sharp. Thats more than enough for a user. I came here from Cedric and Ada's video of two days ago shaved head and sold my knives.

Oher aproach is to ask someone to give you his/her honest opinion about what you are about to purchase without telling them it is a limited edition article or its price....I did this with the Casio Oceanus OCW-S5000C-1AJF ....I asked my son who owns the first titanium one his opinion about it....he surprisingly said "Dad...I really like mine much more....."

  • @Dynotop1a
    @Dynotop1a 5 ปีที่แล้ว

My biggest issue with this phenomenon is that limited editions are generally rather expensive.
When you’re tight on money, you can’t afford to buy right away. No matter how much you want that particular thing.
This means the company misses out on an almost guaranteed purchase if that item would’ve been available down the road.

I hate that shit. It’s so stupid because they make something awesome that “everyone” wants and could sell 10,000 but no, they only make 1000 and so make 90% LESS than they would have made. As long as they are selling ‘em like hot cakes they should KEEP MAKING THEM! Imagine if Apple was like “Well, we are only going to make 10,000 iPhone Xs next year so even though we can sell millions we want it to be special. More income? We aren’t interested.” The shareholders would love that. The manufacturers should have FOMO lots of money 💰. Idiots.

I get "fomo" constantly with my knife collecting. Sprint runs are especially bad, but I guess that's the marketing psychology doing it's job. However a perpetual lack of funds is a limiting factor for me and one which I'm in a way thankful for

  • @manifestgtr
    @manifestgtr 3 ปีที่แล้ว

You know what really makes it bad? The secondary market...
The Shaman is a beautiful example. I’ve been wanting one for months now. I missed the z-wear sprint (the one I realllyy wanted) because i was on a fly fishing trip and frankly, had other priorities. I refuse to pay $400 for a $220 knife on the secondary market. Fuck that...and let’s be honest....who’s buying at these insane prices? It must be somebody. It’s gotten so bad with the Shaman that you’re hard pressed to find *any* plain edge model out there for under $300. They’re just not in stock anywhere. Two things keep you on the straight and narrow. Patience and impulse control. The secondary market is DIRECTLY responsible for this type of thing in certain cases. These people buy em up (sometimes with bots), jack up the price and who gets screwed? We have the power to change this, people. You can’t just keep asking for more every time you get fucked over. At a certain point, it becomes your own fault.

The only reason i don’t pick the Wave+ is only because the name has the + in it. 😂

I got fomo-ed once (well not once) in a positive way. I was at a flea market and i saw a fixed blade that i just recently heared about on youtube. It was the freakin Puma White Hunter. And it was the equivalent of freakin $20 (otherwise $350 new). I got instant fomo, but i have thought about it for as long as we ate at pizza hut with my so. But right after that i went back and i just put my hand on it like a freakin owl, with the intention of rather dying than letting go. So that was a positive fomo which i don't regret till today.
But of course i have spent a lo-o-ot on actual useless things out of fomo (like top of the line things which i did not use after all)

Another reason why I work with custom makers and get on list.
I’ll get what I want and it’ll be unique to the world
I own over 30 fixed blades and 90% are custom and their sheaths
I use them without concern and have respect for the tool that they are
I do have safe queens but only 2
The pocket jewelry that are folder knives have their roll
I own and rotate my same 3 for 4 years. Rat2 aus8 removed clip
Pm2 for when I’m needing that extra something
And my skeletool cx when I do yard work, run my rc truck, anything that needs tinkering. None of these are jewelry.
Always carry a fixed blade along as my primary. Last yr I found my all purpose fixed blade. Neck carry and in pocket
Mike Wallace Wallace Edged Tools Field Mouse cpm154 Yellow Hawk Custom Kydex
I stay watching the folder reviewers cause I get it.
I do one day want to have a very concentrated set of folders that gives me joy.
