- So the $1,000 1998 Mercedes S420 has a few issues. There's nothing more expensive than a cheap Mercedes, right? Well, I'm going to prove that saying wrong in this series of videos as I get this Mercedes W140 back on the road.
In this video, I'll show you how camshaft oiler tube replacement. The tubes were once metal, but Mercedes decided to make them plastic in new versions of the S500 series cars. It's an easy job and you won't need lots of tools!

Hi Mike. A humble suggestion, please find a complete set of metal tube from an older M119 motor and replace the O rings with genuine MB Orings. My E420 had no busted tubes but hardened O rings at 110k miles. I followed this procedure and problem stood resolved with higher oil pressure and no ticking. if the engine is run for a longer period in this condition with ticking valves and low oil pressure, cams get worn out

Love these cars owned some my brother still has his s500, I personally would bite the bullet and replace all of the tubes, 3 blew off already , big chance some other would blow off go in the wrong hole clog a oil port and kill this beautiful engine

I had an 07 chevy pickup with a 4.8 v8 and replaced the transmission and the the cats started rattling like your Mercedes did so I gutted the cats and it ran better then it ever did and didnt have any codes and it got better fuel millage.
My dream W124 is the 95-96 E500 that muscular body combined with the amg V8 and nice rims that fills the wheel arch nicely

I would have replaced all the all the oiler tubes if I was going to through that work. I would and replaced the gasket too! Looks like a Mercedes dealer must have done the gasket and timing chain and maybe the water pump.

LOL @ upside down pineapple. The retired folk up in the big Sun City community outside of Austin are apparently very, uhhhh, "active." It is a common sight to see them cruising the grocery store with an upside down pineapple in their shopping cart or basket.
