Mike’s Biggest Fail Ever: The 190e Mercedes

  • In this video, I'll show you struggles of a Mercedes 190e that won't start. The W201 won't start issue is complicated to solve. You have to check 2 types of fuel pressure, the EHA valve, the air flap, the fuel injectors, the fuel pump, the fuel pressure regulator and the fuel accumulator.
If you're familiar with this car, you know how it tried to burn down the @autoauctionrebuilds shop. The engine went up in flames!

Mike, you rebuilt the injectors in another of your project cars. I suggest you do it on this 190 after your verify the fuel pressure is correct. Just those pld rotted o-rings that seal the injectors into the head can cause low compression.

25:39 that’s actually a good thing but I’ll definitely think it would start up after fixing the hose. Because it’s not getting any pressure to the fuel pump to prime the injectors to start.

    Also:
How to put out a gas fire: Water will be ineffective but you can smother the flames with a blanket. You can also use a powder or foam extinguisher. How to put out a chemical fire: ever use water as this can spread the chemicals further. Extinguish these fires with foam or dry powder.

I have a 1984 W201. 2.3 engine. It would not run when I got it. Replaced the fuel distributor fuel pump, and the filter, and it started. I've driven it for over 200K, now, and it starts every time. I have learned so much about the Bosch mechanical fuel injection system over the last 15 years with this car. I paid $200 for it. I'm glad I bought it.

Mike! You have it in you! Being a vintage Mercedes owner myself I know how frustrating it can be. Sometimes it’s the dumbest fix that IS the fix. I have a good feeling about that hose. These Bosh CIS fuel injection systems are so reliant on exact fuel pressure. Don’t give up this close to the finish line!

  • @orbeaxc
    @orbeaxc ปีที่แล้ว +1

These cars equipped with a Bosch CIS heavily rely on vacuum lines, and a single vacuum leak can easily make your car a non-runner.
By the way, what you replaced together with the fuel pump is not the fuel pressure regulator. It's the fuel pressure accumulator. Its main purpose is to maintain residual pressure in the system. The easiest way to spot a faulty pressure accumulator is a car failing to start when the engine is at operating temperature.
There are many reasons why the car won't start, but here's a few:
    - Obviously those injectors were not in good condition. Those are mechanical injectors that operate above 3.2 bar if I recall correctly. Ultrasonic cleaning or additives have very little or no effect at all on these.
    - Sometimes, the stupidest thing, such as bad wiring can cause the car to not run or stall. The ECU receives signal from different sensors: coolant temperature sensor, throttle position sensor, air-flow sensor, O2 sensor... If a single wire bends and interrupts continuity, the car will likely stall. If you want to run the car on fully mechanical mode, you can unplug the EHA (black electromagnetic actuator beneath the fuel distributor), which is what receives all the information from the ECU and adjusts the differential pressure inside the fuel distributor. Another way to do this is by removing the OVP (gray relay with a red cap and a 10Amp fuse that is located next to the fuel pump relay). This will not provide voltage to the ECU.
    - I have noticed that you're missing a vacuum hose that you need to address. See the valve cover, there's a hose that goes from there to the air filter and ICV (Idle Control Valve). If you are missing that hose, vacuum leaks will be huge, and car will never be able to start, or it run rough or stall after a second.

Your airflow metering plate hardly moves down when cranking. No plate movement = no fuel out off injectors into engine
The plate should move downward by about 1/16” from engine vacuum during cranking, adjust your 3mm Allen screw by jumpering fuel pump relay 7+8 then depress plate by 1/16” by hand, adjust Allen screw until you hear the injectors squealing

That line looked like it has good fuel pressure. Once you prime it after cranking it over. If you push the flap down you sprayed starter fluid into with a injector out you should see it spray fuel.
I used to prime my Bosch system by turning the key on or cranking then going out and pressing the flap down a few times till it went soft.
Mine used to backfire out the flap from bad fuel.
I also used the flap push trick when it would stall and not start and it worked every time.
All it does is simulates wide open throttle when it goes down to push the needle in the center the fuel distributor you took off and distribute more fuel.
That trick will also prime the lines and get the air out by spraying the fuel through instead of the idle or off position it sits in.
The air in the lines was probably why it was bouncing a little bit.
If I were you, I would do the injector check again, and then push down that flap you sprayed starter fluid into and see what the spray is like after you get a key on and prime cycle.
It just might take a few presses to get the air out of the spider and start getting the fuel stream once the intake vaccum sucks the flap into the run position.
It should also make a heeee noise and be stiff when it's got the air out of it and the fuel is loaded.
It's a high pressure system, but it all operates on the flap being closed and off or open @ different lengths.
I would just use my index finger to push it down with the car off a few times till it stopped making the heeee noise and then start it.
It should also help get the crud out of it, and then you would need to get the fuel clear, which the blown line probably just did and clean out the injectors upside down with a cleaner can of stuff attached to a straw.
Flap pushing till soft with the key off after a crank and no start or run and stall will also help warm up the engine and possibly get a better vaccum to the intake by burning off the valve deposits from carbon and old gas.
I'm using moly valve cleaner and berrymans chem tool for fuel additives on older cars.
Also, the ford's flashing airbag light might be for the connection between the column and the wheel.
The OBD1 check engine system requires a plug in tool that plugs in under the hood I believe on the driver side.
It takes some time to work on something for a while, take a break and think it out then come back to it.
Also rember that baking soda puts out fires if you don't have a extinguisher.
When I saw that fuel on the floor I was really glad it did not cause any issues for you.
    :)
