- In this video I'll show you how I made my $1,000 1998 Mercedes S420 look like new (almost)! Classic car restoration all starts with the same thing and a Mercedes W140 is the perfect car to restore.

Good just like the older Beamers... the newer models were a mess (esp v8 and v10:s) with valve stem seals and bottom end bearings needing replacement every 100k miles otherwise they implode... they traded reliability for performance... and the customer had to deal with it after all warantees expired of course...
Hey Mike, To communicate with all the computers in this car you need to use 38 pin adapter and scanner, which is located inside the engine bay on the passenger side underneath the plastic cover. OBDII port was required for the emission testing only.
Cam oiler tubes! Plastic ones are most likely blown. Causing your tic. Very common on these engines

Hey Mike she’s looking great. My guess on the door drips…superglue or similar to try and fix the mirror previously. I got rid of the tick with liquid moly lifter additive in about 50 miles of driving..great stuff!

My grandma owned one of these. She ordered it and had it shipped overseas from Europe brand new. It was a metallic dark steel grey with a lighter grey cladding trim with chrome pieces. It had a grey interior with all of the options. Mirrors all around the car, ash treys on all doors, cooled and heated seats, etc. It had the whole nine yards. She loved that car.
I would detail it for her when I visited her up in Dallas. Boy I loved that car.
what happened to it?
I hit the thumbs up as soon as i saw Lola...my favorite additive on older cars is Restore, proven to restore compression by compression tests. Used it on an older f150 recently, more power, no knocks up hills now. Been using once a year with oil changes for over 20 years on everything.
Here in Germany there was a saying for a long time: "Weiß ist halber Preis" (white means half the price ;P ). Those times are over now and I think white suits the 140 absolutely. Nice job, great purchase at all👍

Just bought a 98 e320 as a daily driver. Has tons of issues, I’m tackling them one by one. Body is mint and the journey of sorting out is miraculous

Fixing the S420 on 4/20 Mike, I know what you're up to!
We owned. A 95 s420 .very solid build quality and It was the best highway cruiser (especially at triple digits speeds)I . I personally had the e420 from 1997.(same engine) And it had the same litter tick. It was caused by a 20$ plastic oil pipe that supplies oil to the lifter. They become brittle and break. Very easy fix. The w140 with the v8 or v12 will be remembered as one of the greatest sedans ever made. German engineering at its best.
Could those marks on the door be something that came out of the tape on the mirror?

mike, the p1580 code refers to throttle motor bank 1 mailfunction .congrats on your purchase , you really got a steal .the w140 series was built to last decades and it it shows .over here in the netherlands they are practicly ecxtinct .this benz is on my wish list .good luck Mike .

Mike you should get to see if the oiler tubes under the valve covers are clogged or broken. You might not be getting sufficient oil to the camshafts/valve train judging from the noise.
I had same noise on my E50 AMG, i replaced oil tubes, problem solved, easy job

Probably one or more of the cam oiler tubes have blown out. Making the ticking noise. Common on the M119.

For the tires, check with LKQ and local tire shops. Sometimes one or both will have good used tires salvaged from wrecks that can be had for a reasonable price.
Marvel Mystery Oil is fantastic stuff to use in any vehicle. I typically run liquimoly engine flush and synthetic oil in the European cars. Especially if they've been dormant and/or neglected for an extended period of time, and then I also add an Mo2 additive as well from Liquimoly. Very pricey but very good stuff to use in these cars! I actually just put that stuff in my 2014 CR-V which is my present daily driver atm and so far so good! It helps with the Vtec actuator which is a common issue on these engines, and I am going to have to replace the Vtec at some point in the foreseeable future unfortunately. But for the time being, this is a pretty good band aid.
Hey mike put a quart of transmission fluid in the oil let run for a while . The transmission fluid has detergents in it to help with the slug in the motor.

I have the same pressure washer nice unit you can buy a uberflex hose that's 50ft same as the one that came with it but longer makes it much easier to detail your cars or using it around the house and it will not kink Amazon has it for like 50.00

engine flush bottle + oil change should help
It sounds like the lifters lost prime. Rev it to 3k for 3 minutes and it may be enough to silence it. Still a nice score.
Blast the Benz with Super Clean!
What scanner are you using ?
Open the head cover and check for the worn out valve lifter,....replace it.
If this was my car,
I'd want to throw a $600 set of Kelly Edge all seasons on it.
But then that's almost what the car is worth, so not worth it.
A $322 set of Ohtsu FP7000's would do just fine.
Partial to the Kelly Edge, since dad has had them on his 2004 Ford Focus for the last 7 years.
Ironman tires aren't terrible, they're cheaper in some cases than both the Kelly and the Ohtsu's.
back to fixing the 190 and the 150 ford now......

Lotta lifter noise. I'd try an engine flush, then with fresh oil, keep it at 5k rpm down the street. That should create enough pressure to fill the valve adjustment lifters. I think the glass will separate from the headlight housing if you bake it for 5 minutes at 200F.

Spray tire shine (aerosol)on all the plastic under hood just let it dry on its own they will look like new
Does it have a spare tire that matches? Tar and bug remover under the side mirror, repolish
How many miles does this W140 have on it?
I’d be willing to bet that if you remove the tail lights and the center reflector band you’ll find all kinds of rust particularly around the trunk lock. Unfortunately Mercedes’s no lone sells the tail lights and company that made them (ULO) has also stopped manufacturing them😢
