      I would say Johnny Guitar Watsons song Space Guitar. It was back in the 50s and about the first real shred. It was before anything else. Not as good as Kath by any measure but for firsts he started it. He was rocknroll before it even had a name.

    Terry’s talent transcends what the highest musical ability looks like.
    He rarely looks down at his instrument while hitting every note with blazing precision. I am convinced that no matter how hard you work, or how much practice, very few musicians on earth will ever come close to this level of expertise, and do it with soul. This is a God given talent on display. There is no other explanation.

  • @CharlieBoy360
    @CharlieBoy360 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Check it out at the 5:00 mark. Even his own bandmates who played with him for years and get up on stage with him every night and look, even they're blown away by his prowess. I know the guys from Chicago love to tell the story about how Jimi Hendrix told them on several different occasions that Terry was better than him. Jimi was an extremely competitive player and talent and while he often would make self deprecating comments like that appearing humble or authentic, he never told Clapton that. Or Jeff Beck. Or any of the dozens of great American players of the time. I believe he meant it and he was right from a pure players perspective Kath was just outstanding as you see in this creative finger melting solo.
    Terry was also part of that group of players who could play a song live and play the solo differently yet always finish the song in about the same amount of time. Hendrix did it, Jimmy Page did it, Carlos Santana did it and Terry did it. It's not an easy thing to do unless you've mastered the guitar. RIP Terry Kath.

    • @adude394
      @adude394 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@annawarner1078 Terry was playing with a gun, a 9mm semi-auto pistol, at a party. Somebody warned him to be careful with the gun, and he ejected the magazine, pointed the gun at his head, and pulled the trigger. Unfortunately, as any one with any knowledge of guns will tell you, if a semi-auto has a round in the chamber, it can fire even with the magazine ejected. This gun had a round in the chamber, and Terry died instantly, only about a week before his 32nd birthday. A senseless, needless, tragic death, just as an overdose would have been. The thing is, I've read that he enjoyed target shooting, so one might think he would have followed the first, common-sense rule of gun safety: Every gun is loaded, always, and should be treated that way. However, as is painfully clear, intoxicants and guns are a very, very bad mix.

      Same here. Heard this song my whole life (born early 70s) in the standard radio version which unfortunately doesn't really give much prominence to the solo! If the radio track had featured the guitar solo more I probably would have spent my while life thinking of Kath in the same breath as Hendrix and several others. Instead here I am in middle age just waking up to the fact.
      Halfway through this video I noticed that my Wi-Fi had cut out and I was now watching on 5G cellular data which would probably bump my monthly bill up by ten bucks. I didn't care, I kept watching. A first view of this was too good to interrupt. 🎶✨

    I must now go and find more of this!! Really smoked that Terry.

      Hi Mike,
      I'm just a couple years younger than you, but I was fortunate enough to discover Chicago in my teens. I at one time had all of their albums on vinyl! (That's more than 20 albums...)
      They were generous so they included free posters in their albums which were hanging on the walls of my teen bedroom.
      Their first three albums were double records... Chicago 4 was a 4 record set(!) [Chicago IV: Live at Carnegie Hall] That is a disc-per-album record that has never been beat or even approached...
      I have seen them live in concert over 20 times back in the day. They are one of those bands that is so good in the studio that they "Could not possibly be better in concert live..." (until you go see them and realize, WHOA!, they really are better live!!) Unbelievable!
      Me and my friends we're also fans of the same hard rockers you mentioned (among others,) but I always had to go see Chicago when they came to town even when my friends said "What do you want to go see them for?" If they came along they found out, if they didn't, they didn't know what they were missing.
      I have seen many,many top bands live in my life, but few have ever matched the technical precision and artistic expression of Chicago live in concert.
      At my age I don't even listen to music that much anymore, my mind is on other things. But, oh what memories...
      God Bless You and yours this holiday season, Mike!
