Sergey Kasharin was out of this world on this number. A big loss for Leonid & Friends that Sergey has left the band to work closer to his home in Russia. Touring just didn't match up with his need to stay close to family and home. An incredible talent. His guitar work is phenomenal.
@@acousticsong-guitarco964 Hey, some people can parrot in foreign languages quite well-- remember that a lot of British Prog Rock bands of the 60s and 70s were often mistaken for American bands because of their many times nearly non-existent British English accent in their singing!
Sergey's guitar work on this some of the best on the internet. He just channels Terry Kath. So many chances to soar on this one and he takes them all. The rhythm section is killing it too. Leonid and Igor more than just covering the original. Leonid shows what a phenomenal bass player Cetera was in his prime. And Igor is one of the worlds great drummers. The whole thing is just perfection.
Sergey is phenomenal, know several very good lead guitarists, might try to cover SRV, might try to cover Hendrix, but will shy away from covering Kath. BTW, my favorite horn song, trumpet part is actually pretty easy compared to 'Make Me Smile' or 'Saturday in The Park'.
@@perryparsons9960 very true... The uniqueness of Terry Kath is not duplicated by many. This guy nails it, to be sure. So glad I found this group! Very impressive all together!!!
This isn't simply a cover - it's a loving tribute (especially Sergei Kasharin's amazing paean to the late, great Terry Kath). I absolutely love these guys.
THIS is the song my wife insisted I listen to about two years ago. I was not inclined to listen to a cover band. Ha! OK, I was wrong, so very wrong! I'm obsessed with the MAGIC this group of humans create. I have now seen them live twice and have gotten to meet the band socially on another occasion. I do not have the ability to express the joy they have brought into my life. Thank you, Leonid, for making this happen.
Knowing these guys' work, I was expecting a solid attempt at that solo. Pow. Unbelievable. No idea if it's note perfect or not, but this is what it felt like when I was a kid laying on my bed in those summers 40 years ago.
Adding absolutely nothing over what’s already been said here… this is hands-down the most technically accurate and best sounding cover of any song I have ever heard anywhere. Wonderful job all around. You’d all make Terry Kath proud.
They tour America every year and have many dates booked for '24. I saw them in 2021 and they were incredible. I believe that the only two from this video that are touring with them are Leonid (bass) and Igor (drums). Still an amazing show!
A russian band covers CHICAGO in 2019, I can't believe it. You are playing on the highest level, just outstanding. Thanks for that guys. What a joy. Cheers from Germany.
I have saved every, single one of Leonid & Friends songs as my "favorites!" I've played the trumpet for more than 30 years and the way Andrey Zyl plays high C's, and high G's effortlessly, left me breathless! I've NEVER heard a more together band in my life. I also agree with those who say that "these guys are not a cover band, they're the real thing" are absolutely correct! I grew up listening to Chicago and EW&F and I'm almost ashamed to say that I enjoy the way Leonid & Friends sound than I do the originals!
"...I'm almost ashamed to say that I enjoy the way Leonid & Friends sound than I do the originals!" Well, after 45+ years of technology improvements with respect to recording and mixing, every instrument and vocal stands out in this new recording. (Not to mention that every band member is a consumate professional.) Superb, unmatched rendition of a classic!!!!
@@polyscroll I think its also oartky the way rock and pop musicicianship has moved on in nearly 55 years. Recording is also better, so every nuance can now be heard, and people are less afraid to go for it. Brilliant.
I've heard some cover bands in my time, but that was EXCELLENT! Nothing overplayed, tight as a gnat's arse and bonus brass section. Great stuff... I'd book 'em for a wedding!
@@mjr320 You're right, I think they could... I'd just prefer to imagine them at a wedding reception where you turn up and are blown away by the band they have on ( I've seen that a couple of times...), 10 of them on stage, each going home with just £50 'cos they're in it for the music and the craic. The good old days, hey...
Watching Sergey play Terry Kath’s immortal solo was a sight to behold and a real treat to ear. I have to believe as many do that Kath may be the most under rated guitarist of all time. Sergey’s rendition was full of the same power and emotion and his talent was on full display. Once again, my hat is off to Leonid and friends and I continue to be amazed each time I watch their videos.
Pete Gibson Totally agree with your comments about Terry Kath. The man was one hell of a talented guitar player. Although others did get a lot of press he just did what he did. Absolutely smoked it! He should recognized As a equal to Clapton, Beck, Page, Allman, SRV, Buchanan and Hendricks. Left the world way to soon.
I agree. Sergey's guitar playing is simply not to be believed. I have been a full time professional musician since 1982 and this kid blows me away. Terry Kath is the only guitar player who Hendrix said was "Better than I am". Wow
Math couldn't help himself, in that he literally was Chicago. They were never the same without him. He simply played for the love of playing! The man poured virtually everything he had, into every song, every time he played, it was his obsession. We were blessed to have him while we did, he will be missed forever!
This Russian guitarist is out of this world. I feel Teri Kath would be amazed and proud... Good job to Leonid & Friends for capturing the essence and passion of the band Chicago....

I CANNOT stop watching & listening to this group! Since I ‘discovered’ them, here on TH-cam, 2 weeks ago I’ve played their entire catalog over & over (& over ...). As both a vocalist & horn player growing up in the ‘60s & ‘70’s in America I was obsessed with the great horn bands like Chicago; Blood Sweat & Tears; Earth, Wind & Fire, et. al.. I marvel at the exquisite musicianship displayed by all of these immensely talented people and only wish I could could ‘sit in’ with them! Leonid’s ability to cipher these tracks - BY EAR - is reminiscent of the scene in ‘Amadeus’ (movie about Mozart) where Mozart hears Salieri’s march played once by the Emperor Joseph II ... which leads to Mozart sitting down and playing it and then running many variations off with ease. Okay, back to the present from my obscure movie reference ... Leonid & Friends musicianship, obvious passion and enjoyment of playing keystone music from my youth has brought tremendous joy to me in what has been (like so many I suspect) one of the most difficult years of my 60 year-old life! (2020) I am a disabled Veteran living in chronic pain and fatigue from Parkinson’s disease. My medical providers encouraged me to return to my musical & artistic youthful endeavors for ‘Neuroplasticity’ ... and it’s been one of the most effective means of pushing back on chronic pain and keeps me from falling into the twin abyss of dopamine deficiency induced Anxiety & Depression. I, however, hit a very rough spot, 3 months ago and stopped painting and playing my music. That is ... UNTIL I heard Leonid & Friend’s opening riffs of Chicago’s “Make Me Smile”. ... which, in a profound way they did! Thank you so very much to all of you in Leonid & Friends for returning music, joy and hope back into my life!
God bless you man , and help you in youre battle of life !!! Your description of this group of artists is spot on ! I to am a vet , and have problems with occasional depression . These guys , and gal , kick depressions ass !!! I know what you mean ...☝🙏☝🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸☝☝☝😁😁😁😁😁
For me, honestly, BETTER than the original...crisper, cleaner, amazing arrangement and instrument volume levels, all the vocals are insane, the brass section blends in perfectly, everyone's timing is perfect, the drummer is so casual but complex... AND THEN....that guitarist KILLS one of the most difficult guitar solos ever written..!!! I cant stop watching this. One of my top 10 performances of all time by a band. Anyone Agree ??
Dudes... I've worked in radio here in the U.S. since 1980. I have seen thousands of live shows and a healthy handful of cover/tribute bands. Your crew is hands down the best cover band I've ever heard :) Bravo!! NOTHING replaces talent.
Scott Ledger Ive worked with some of the best in the Business and these guys are beating so much ass its incredible lol! Id hire these guys in an instant
I just can't believe how good this is... Killer horn section, drums completely dead-on, and what can you say about that guitar?... It's just so so soooooo good! I remember this song so well when I was a kid in the 70s and once again, you guys may have even hit it better than the original. Thanks for the joy. That was great.
Great comment Fred.... its hard to not complement everyone in this incredible group....but... this guitarist is "out of sight" as we used to say in the old days. He copies these super high speed leads with perfection...probably like you said.... "better than the original"
Let's not forget the bass player. If the bass part rounds out the song, isn't rushed, isn't otherwise noticeable, then it's perfect. This band is fantastic all the way around. The singer sounds surprisingly like Cetera.
I agree. Speaking of the horns, I played solo bari sax in a stage band in the '70s and this song was one of our staples. We did our own jazzy all instrumental version of it, not a cover. The bari part was (is) repetitive and takes a lot of wind. It wasn't one of my favorites to play but the audience always seemed to like it. It's not easy to sound that tight.
Sergey Kashirin... Brother, you DEFINITELY did Terry Kath justice with your solo. That F*#KING ROCKED!!!! As a fan of the original and someone who saw Chicago live, I must say, GREAT JOB to ALL of you!
this is soooo fucking good. every member was top-notch. that guitarist impressed me greatly - excellence. the drummer was straight-up pro. The vocals!! yeah, really great cover. congrats men - superb!!
I’m listening to this almost every night and can’t seem to get enough of it. It’s better than the Chicago original. Every player is killing it but this lead guitarist is out of this world !
This is as close to perfection as any cover I’ve ever heard. Quite simply I am amazed at how these musicians pulled this off- your talent is off the charts.
i read some of the comments before listening... and according to those comments i was supposed to believe that this was going to be a phenomenal rendition. Supposedly, this was going to be as good as what i remember listening to the album many years ago. When it played, i had to look at the performers and make sure this really was being performed by others. If i didn't see them doing it, i would have thought it was a remastered cd from the original. Never heard anything so well done... ever
I thought the same. If you closed your eyes you'd swear it was Chicago. this was a near perfect loyal rendition of that song. and they made it fun to watch by having so much fun knocking it out of the park. and they kept the energy of the song in the driving beat and frenetic horns. this was choice.
What I just wrote after watching it: _"I had heard that this was really good, and today is the day I got to see it. WOW I had chills almost the whole way through, and that solo ..... perfection! This is one of my Top 3 rock songs, and I grew up on Chicago in the 70's, and this is so damn spot on I couldn't believe what I was hearing."_
To play a song this complicated and make it look so effortless requires some incredible musicians. Hats off to the entire band...this is a cover band I would happily pay to see perform. Hope y'all come back to the US soon, stay longer and have more tour dates and cities!
For any Chicago fan this is just pure dynamite. This visual presentation of the performance that went into producing this video just adds to the greatness, and on top of that reminds me just how great music was and still is. Greetings.
I am so glad to have found this band. What musicianship! I am almost 74 years old and have played in bands, listened to bands, watched bands but I cannot recall a better drummer than this one. Bravo to ALL OF THEM.
The people in USA LOVE THIS! we are so sick of seeing the actual artists perform a different version of their songs we come to love from the radio version. And it’s because they don’t care - they have their money and no longer feel the need to put any effort into it. LnF plays EVERY song dead on and with energy and artistic integrity to the original. Amazing.
Exactly! This is why I never went to see most musical groups or singers perform live because it was always a disappointment. Either they never sounded as good live or they were always diverging from the radio version of their songs by changing the melody line with improvisation and bailing out on high notes. Most groups really gave their all in the studio to immortalize the best version of their songs on the record but never on stage, and it always felt like a bit of a rip off at concerts. People are so drawn to Leonid and Friends because it's the extremely high musical standard and quality they're reacting to. We just don't hear it with most groups in live performance, and it's like our souls are starved for this kind of quality and musicianship.
@@janglingjack Yes.. They did all songs so well there.. Beginnings is soo better than the record..Record one is good .But at Tanglewood they were in a different league
Serge: hope you and those you love are OK in the current conflict. I just want your positive energy back and the craziness of the war over. Your gift is so much more then the madness of what is happening. Love and good energy to you and yours. :) 😍
My wife and I caught the 'Leonid and Friends" show in Ft. Wayne, Indiana on Oct. 27 and it honestly far exceeded our expectations. It can be very difficult to sound as good when playing live as when in the recording studio, but the group absolutely sounded fantastic. The audience was all standing at the end of the show and calling for an encore, which the band provided. There manager, too, did a terrific job of engaging with the audience. The next day my wife and I stopped in to Sweetwater Music Center (a huge nationally known music center located in Ft. Wayne) and saw members of the group in the store. I generally never approach celebrities in public since I don't want to interfere with their privacy but we did end up approaching (after apologizing profusely for the intrusion) the table where several were seated simply to let them know how much we enjoyed the show. I have to say that they were incredibly pleasant and appreciative. I intentionally kept our interaction brief but I have to say that the reaction we received further cemented my impressions that this group of musicians is truly unique. We drove up from Florida to catch the show and it was well worth the trip. If you get a chance to see the band live don't fail to do so.
OMG, I’m from Fort Wayne and never saw it advertised that they were here to perform! Where did they play, the Embassy I am guessing?? Perhaps the Coliseum? I’d give anything to see them, I’m so impressed! Saw Chicago twice at Franke park Theatre which was great but these guys SO impress me! I’d drive to see them for sure. Where did they perform at in Fort Wayne? I thank you for your response, very much.
@@technojunkindatrunk They performed at the Clyde. It was a complete sold out full house. When I got to talk to several of them the next day they implied that they will be coming back to Ft. Wayne but of course no dates were given. In light of the support role that Sweetwater plays it seems reasonable to at least hope they will be returning in the not too distant future. I know that they were in Ft. Wayne 2 or 3 years ago, also, since one of my friends caught that show.
Thank you John so much for responding to my question! It is appreciated. I completely forgot about the Clyde. Back in the day, the early sixties, my parents would drop me and my girlfriend off at the Clyde Theatre whenever the Beatles and Elvis Presley had their movies airing. My God, we were very little then-sure couldn’t do that these days! I don’t watch tv so I might miss an advertisement of the band coming back but I’ll be on the lookout. Thanks again. 🙋♀️
I’ve seen them twice at the Florida Theater in Jacksonville. The second show was as mind blowing as the first show I saw two years before even though the original lead guitarist Sergey had departed. The replacement guitarist nailed it as well.
So true. The drummer is the backbone of a band. I once attended a Ray Charles concert; he was genius, the band was good, but the drummer spoiled everything.
Sergey tosses that guitar solo off as it he's been playing it since he was born, and yet it's still fresh. And Igor on the drum kit ... is he in the pocket or what?!
Weren't they all in that groove that Chicago originally laid down. If they come back to the states I will try my best to be in their audience. In the late 70's I was a bass player in a trio and we got tickets to attend a Chicago concert in Seattle. The best listening spot is in front of the stage because all you hear are the monitors. Unforgettable. Peter Cetera was wandering around the stage during their performances and I began doing that during our next gig. Boss man said "STOP!"
The thing about music is that there is no race, creed, color, or nationality. There is only the music. It’s like food for the sole. Thank you for such a great tribute and sharing your wonderful talent with us here in America.
I cant be the only person who NEEDS to hear this band play some Boston!! Journey?? Stevie Ray? Jimi? Kansas? anything with actual vocals and killer guitar....my god anything actually musically exceptional in the older world of rock I believe this band could simply NAIL IT!!!
The only thing being, Leonid & Friends typically covers bands with brass sections in the mix. The absolute BEST band to cover all your suggestions in their original sounds is "Lexington Lab Band" out of Kentucky, USA. Look them up!
@@isee7668 Fantastic, I've seen Chicago in Concert, these guys are as good. It's refreshing to see today, not much live bands out there of this quality.
Not to take anything from this player, but keep in mind Terry performed that solo some 40 years ago without decades of other players to listen to. Just saying. Love the original and this loving and respectful recreation of incredibly technical musicianship by true artists.
This is a masterpiece. I've lost count on how many times I've watched this. Everything about it is exceptional. The musicianship, the vocals, the overall production, are all incredible.
This is not a cover. It’s perfection. Any Chicago song is difficult to cover, but this especially is almost impossible to get the full complexity and the tone and the spirit. This cover does it and how. Terry Kath is reborn in that solo.
Terry Kath was one of the unsung GODS of guitar. So fast, such perfect dive bomb licks, with a horn band no less. You did him proud, my friend. Wonderful job for all involved.
Was never unsung or underrated as others have said . Hendrix said kath was his favourite American guitarist. A fine compliment from one of the finest. To many make to much of to few and we hear the same names of who the greatest guitarist was and most haven't heard of kath . He was amazing . Anyone that hasn't heard of kath has missed out on something very special.
Sergey, dude if Terry Kath was still alive I believe he would absolutely LOVE your playing Brother! You are a very talented guitarist and singer. Great job! Keep on ROCKING...
Oh my God. 50 yrs I've been playing guitar and after watching this I realized... I've learned nothing in those 50 yrs. From what other world beyond ours did these musicians come from? It is a masterpiece.
Wow! It's not just anyone who can carry off Terry's guitar solo! And an extremely gifted and trained vocal that's just about exactly between Peter and Jason... so wonderful. How am I just discovering this band?
I think he does a better job than TK ever did in the studio or live. AND they really pushed the guitar forward in this mix (where I feel it belongs) - Chicago's producers were always pushing it back in the mix where you could still hear the genius and technical madness of it, but at a much more subdued level.

I didn't want the guitar solo to end 😀 it was so awesome

Uncanny,a new level

That guitarist just blew my mind out, he was incredible with his playing, it's as if he brought the spirit of Terry Kath with him.
Tearing it up on what appears to be a Les Paul Studio, no less.
Yeah, and I'm pretty sure he's Leonid's (the bassist) son.
Check out the guitarist on the Steely Dan my old school cover they do! My mouth dropped to the floor!
His guitar needed a cigarette after that!
Sergey Kasharin was out of this world on this number. A big loss for Leonid & Friends that Sergey has left the band to work closer to his home in Russia. Touring just didn't match up with his need to stay close to family and home. An incredible talent. His guitar work is phenomenal.

They're awesome. Incredible cover of Chicago's biggest hit.
Not only is this a flawless cover, it's made even more amazing when you consider English is not your native language. Un-friggin'-believeable!

Soloing in a foreign language can be tricky, especially on the guitar.
@Jaime Alonzo Yeah. Remember the last US elections?

It's not "step aside T Kath" but STEP UP Sergey Kashirin and join "world class" lead guitars anywhere.

God DAMN Sergey!! That is what we mean when we say a dude SHREDS that guitar. Holy cow, man. I thought that guitar was gonna melt!
Smokin" Did the guitar guy nail it or WHAT!
Everyone did even the horn section! Prefect! The harmony is incredible too. Love it a lot.
Knowing these guys' work, I was expecting a solid attempt at that solo.
Pow. Unbelievable. No idea if it's note perfect or not, but this is what it felt like when I was a kid laying on my bed in those summers 40 years ago.
Wade Older I have never heard anyone play it with that feel and intonation before. Such joy and spirit. SHIVERS
So true - 100% of the feel and spirit Terry Kath put into the original. Excellent job building intensity throughout.
John Shinal I imagine they have some great old analog studios in Russia. You could do some great work.
The guitarist and the drummer are from another dimension. Absolutely amazing

You’d all make Terry Kath proud.
Dear god, why are these people not on a world tour. They would sell out every venue with every show. I have NEVER heard anything this clean and pure.
They tour America every year and have many dates booked for '24. I saw them in 2021 and they were incredible. I believe that the only two from this video that are touring with them are Leonid (bass) and Igor (drums). Still an amazing show!

He should recognized
As a equal to Clapton, Beck, Page, Allman, SRV, Buchanan and Hendricks. Left the world way to soon.
I agree. Sergey's guitar playing is simply not to be believed. I have been a full time professional musician since 1982 and this kid blows me away. Terry Kath is the only guitar player who Hendrix said was "Better than I am". Wow
Kath didn't shred for the sake of shredding, his solos were melodically following the song.
Math couldn't help himself, in that he literally was Chicago. They were never the same without him. He simply played for the love of playing! The man poured virtually everything he had, into every song, every time he played, it was his obsession. We were blessed to have him while we did, he will be missed forever!

When I close my eyes I can't tell the difference from Chicago and this amazing band. I grew up listening to Chicago.
So did I and I still love them. But I think....
Am I allowed to say so?... Leonid & friends are better.
I am a disabled Veteran living in chronic pain and fatigue from Parkinson’s disease.

As a fan of the original and someone who saw Chicago live, I must say, GREAT JOB to ALL of you!

i read some of the comments before listening... and according to those comments i was supposed to believe that this was going to be a phenomenal rendition. Supposedly, this was going to be as good as what i remember listening to the album many years ago. When it played, i had to look at the performers and make sure this really was being performed by others. If i didn't see them doing it, i would have thought it was a remastered cd from the original. They owned it. They made it theirs.
I thought the same. If you closed your eyes you'd swear it was Chicago. this was a near perfect
loyal rendition of that song. and they made it fun to watch by having so much fun knocking
it out of the park. and they kept the energy of the song in the driving beat and frenetic horns.

Amazing.
Well said

Thanks for sharing this. Much appreciated 👍

I’ve seen them twice at the Florida Theater in Jacksonville. The second show was as mind blowing as the first show I saw two years before even though the original lead guitarist Sergey had departed. The replacement guitarist nailed it as well.

Right? He's flawless
The band wouldn’t sound nearly as good as it does without Igor. He is a fantastic drummer who keeps everyone steady and on point.
So true. The drummer is the backbone of a band.
I once attended a Ray Charles concert; he was genius, the band was good, but the drummer spoiled everything.
The first thing I noticed about this band was the incredible drumming. Just perfect.

I'd personally love to hear them try some Average White Band. With their tightness and musicianship, I think it'd be a home run
Freakin love this ❤ 🙌 🔥 🎶 🎵 🪕 🎼 I, along with others here can't stop listening Amazing
♥️ from ☀️ California
This was probably the twentieth time listening to this and it is just as stunning as the first time.
And it's Live !!!!!!!!!!!!!
quite good eh??? :)
@@isee7668 Fantastic, I've seen Chicago in Concert, these guys are as good. It's refreshing to see today, not much live bands out there of this quality.
Man you really honored Terry Kath with such a great version and Lead.
So impressed 👍
Not to take anything from this player, but keep in mind Terry performed that solo some 40 years ago without decades of other players to listen to. Just saying. Love the original and this loving and respectful recreation of incredibly technical musicianship by true artists.
This is a masterpiece. I've lost count on how many times I've watched this. Everything about it is exceptional. The musicianship, the vocals, the overall production, are all incredible.
Great track and solo electric guitarist. Magnificent cover.
This is not a cover. It’s perfection. Any Chicago song is difficult to cover, but this especially is almost impossible to get the full complexity and the tone and the spirit. This cover does it and how. Terry Kath is reborn in that solo.
Any Chicago song from V and back. Afterwards it's all fluff. These guys a amazing.....better than Chicagos' line up currently.
The whole group sounds incredible but kudos to the lead guitar player and drummer WOW!!!
Mark Raum yeah Serge is hitting Terry Kath’s solo note for note. Still missing Terry but this has made my day.
@@trtr-bc3zl Very undersung and virtually unknown today among the Gods of guitar. You know the cube root of nothing.
Absolutely kick ass boys . Love it.
At least you're good enough to know. Kudos. Me too.
RJ404 De acuerdo con vos
These guys are Russian. Hard to believe, but true. Damn good.
some place called russia
Watch a video of Billy Strings and you'll probably quit playing guitar.
Sergey Kashirin is almost as much fun to watch as to listen to. He's almost dancing here sometimes.
He has total rock n roll charisma! I know you said this comment 7 yrs ago. lol But Sergey is so good and cool.
Wow! It's not just anyone who can carry off Terry's guitar solo! And an extremely gifted and trained vocal that's just about exactly between Peter and Jason... so wonderful. How am I just discovering this band?
My God !!! Terry is smiling down from heaven. The lead guitar player nailed it.😀👍👍👍
Lead guitarist has his work cut out for him, attempting to cover Terry Kath - and crushes it!
FACT
I think he does a better job than TK ever did in the studio or live. AND they really pushed the guitar forward in this mix (where I feel it belongs) - Chicago's producers were always pushing it back in the mix where you could still hear the genius and technical madness of it, but at a much more subdued level.
@@mattclark1278 Terry is looking down and smiling ☺
TK was one of Hendrix's favorite guitarists. FYI....
@@davidvick9901 just going to say the same thing.
Man how good is this band! The guitarist and drummer are incredible. The horn section spot on. Crazy!
Best band in the world. Yes they're a covers band, but that is just incidental.
