Don't hate me for this but I first learned of Kath through their Netflix documentary and even watching their journey and how they are in a sense, an immortal rock band, I still felt such a pull towards Kath's playing and voice. I think he is what lead fans towards the band in the beginning and the rest was just a legacy....
Terry Kath, the finest guitarist and songwriter that ever blessed our lives! My age is 68 now, I was 14 (in 69,) when I first heard the band, (the CTA album). At 15 (1970) myself, and a very good friend and great organist, (his father was a minister, and he grew up playing the piano and organ,) a good lead guitarist and very good drummer, both from our high school, formed a band, I played bass, I could play 6 string but was nowhere near good enough to play lead and rhythm in a band. We played a lot of Chicago's song's, minus the horn section but the organ he had was decent at producing horn sounds. We played high school dances all over the area and in our senior year played and came in 2nd in a battle of the bands held in New Haven CT against guys that weren't in high school anymore. We were quite proud of ourselves to come in 2nd as teenagers against bands with guys in their 20's and mid 20's. Terry will always be my favorite guitarist and songwriter, it saddened me terribly at his passing. He had soo much more to give to us all and his voice was wonderful.
I also was in a high school band that covered Chicago. Per a request we were asked to play "Beginings" and "Does Anybody Know What Time It Is". We were 3 musicians in the school band, guitarist was a trumpet player, drummer was the best drummer I've ever had the fortune of playing with, and I played saxophone. I still think we only pulled it off because we were not just a garage band, but because we were "musicians". We mixed Chicago, with ZZTOP, Montrose and Rush in 75-76. A certain talent was needed for the music we played, but you needed to be a "musician" to do Chicago. We can't imagine what Terry Kath could have attained, though he'd surely left a much bigger mark than the huge print he left us with. RIP TK
The 70's were the greatest era to be alive. It didn't matter what station you tuned it to there was a hit being played. I agree! I had all the early Chicago albums in the early 70s and totally lost interest in Chicago when Peter and David Foster, for me, ruined the vib with all of the commercial, sappy songs. So now I’m 61 and am totally obsessed with Terry, Robert, Danny, the horn section, etc. I can’t get enough of Terry. His guitar solos and voice blow me away. Why was I not in tune with all of this in my young years? As a guitarist myself, I should have been! Well, I’m making up for lost time! ❤️
Oh man. Pick me up off of the floor!!! Terry Kath's effortless, soulful singing and matchless intonaton!!! Unbelievable how he did NOT "over--sing" this song, and he did not put too much "vocal gravy" on the song!!! He was truly one-of-a-kind. Don't you just love him?

Pankow is an amazing composer. Ballad for a Girl in Buchannon is pure genius!
@@DavidStowell Although, you are correct. These three songs were originally written as part of "Ballad for a Girl in Buchannon" by Pankow. Many of the ballads & songs were broken up for radio air play by record execs (Clive Davis) much to the bands dissatisfaction per early interviews. Watch the 1970 Tanglewood performance and hear the words directly from Kath's mouth, "This next song is 'Ballad..." but you may know it as 'Make Me Smile'."
Sounds a bit like the theme song of The Deer Hunter.

Im about 60 years old and didn't have any idea about what all happened. All I remember is Peter taking lead vocals. It is a must see. Blessing to all who read this in Atlanta Ga

I can't remember how we learned Kath had died, but my then-boyfriend-eventual-husband was shocked and saddened. He was an amateur guitarist who admired Terry Kath more than any other rock guitarist at that time.
