Thanks for the information about printing fabric. It was very interesting. We all owe a debt of gratitude to Rosa Parks and Dr. King and others. I wish we were closer to achieving their goals. We have a long way to go.

When my son no longer had to wear ties he gave them all to me. Saw a pattern for a dresden plate type pattern using ties. That is my goal with his ties. Very interesting tutorial.

I grew up in Detroit and visited Henrey Ford Museum many times. One thing I wanted to share is Mike Illitch, founder of Little Ceasars pizza, found out Rosa Parks was struggling. He made sure she had a place to stay by paying for her rent up until she passed. Mike Illitch has since passed but that stuck with me on his generosity. The traditional and digital was very interesting. 💙

Good info about digital prints. Please also talk about 1) which is better for environment. 2) digital prints are trickier to machine quilt because the color doesn’t go through the fabric, but sits on top.

I think that by learning about all of the different parts that make the whole of quilting is fascinating. Digital printed fabric today. Maybe hologram fabric tomorrow. The possibilities are endless.

Lovely show today, traditional and digital printing and the very hard lives of people gone by.My mum went to South Africa with my dad when he was drafted in the mid fifties and said how hard it was that the local people had to go in the 'back door' of shops, buses, separate seating in the same cinema,

The fabric manufacturing process is so interesting, I saw a video on it and learned that digital printing is so much safer for the workers as well as being a more cost-effective manufacturing process. Thanks for talking about it today. I would also like to visit the museum with the bus upon which Ms Parks was riding.

Yesterday after your show I checked out Kendall's channel. It was a 2 step process to get there but you had it highlighted in your notes. 👍 I watched him make that chubby pineapple 🍍 you love 💓. Since the coloured markers won't be printed on digitals the red zinger quilt came just in time! Your tree quilt has a vintage look to it. Pretty 🌲🙂

I really love that pink scarf you have on today! Thanks for the info about digital printing. I think another advantage is better matching of colors. I remember watching Tula Pink explaining how she gets preliminary prints of her traditional fabrics and sometimes has to return them because the colors aren't quite right! With digital, what you see is what you get! As for the Christmas Tree quilt, I've pieced several of them, but haven't quilted them as yet. It is an easy, fun pattern!

I knew that digital prints were more detailed but the other information you offered was great too! My LQS participates annually in the Rocky Mountain Shop Hop here in Colorado. Knew the financial commitment was high for these shops to prepare, advertise and pay for special fabrics for these events - 3000 yards is a lot of fabric! Thanks.

What an interesting video! Thank you. You have demystified the printing of fabric, which is good information to have.
I have used ties in memory quilts. After loosing my husband, I made several quilts out of his shirts. I have plans to also do something with the ties where they are quite prominent, but I don’t know what yet. But I wanted to experiment, so I used one or two ties in a couple of the memory quilts. Once undone, the ties are just like fabric. I backed both the shirts and the ties with light interfacing. That was very important. The result:
The tie added a vibrancy to the quilt that the regular cotton did not have. Using paper foundation piecing, I created blocks spelling out “I love…” I ran out of tie fabric and had to use regular cotton fabric that blended well. The colors were fine, but the vibrancy of the cotton just did not match the silk in the tie.
The quilts are throw quilts and used and the tie fabric is not wearing as well as the cotton. Another reality! But I will deal with that as needed.

Hi Pat, loved your segment on digital prints v's traditional printed fabrics. In the Longarm community we have need discussing backwards and forwards about the individual threads in the digital prints twisting and showing the white side of the thread. It happens when the needle or thread rubs up and down on the fabric stands as the stitch is made. As you can imagine the needle goes in and out of the fabric hundreds of time a minute depending on the quilting speed used. Sometime the twisted threads look like white 'pulls' in the finished quilt. Has your contact in Benartex any suggestions on how longarmer can better handle this? It was a real problem in the beginning and a lot of longarmer were not accepting digital prints because some customers would not accept that it was not the longarmer's fault. A lot of the recent fabrics' fibres will settle back into place over time / wear or washing but I'd be interested to hear from the manufacturers what they suggest / recommend how best to quilt these new fabrics which are becoming more and more common. Sorry for the long explanation .
    Cheers from Down Under.

There is a company that prints on a variety of fabrics and wallpaper also. They have a vast amount of fabric designers. They don’t print the design until you order it. You can have it printed on everything from silk, cotton ,stretch fabric, canvas, denim. It cuts down on waste. The colors are beautiful. You can choose large prints or smaller prints of the same design.

I just used a Christmas panel that I was able to cut apart for various wall hangings, hot pads,...the one frustration was the framing on the smaller parts was uneven. It was very hard to make it "square". I don't know what company made it. They did turn out cute though, if you could overlook the slightly askew borders. Also, if I made a "hole" while hand quilting, it did not repair itself. Wish I could share photos, but am tech illiterate and don't know how. 😋

Here are my thoughts about digital prints from a little different perspective . When longarming regular fabric , if you have to unpick any quilting you can just steam iron it or spray with water and iron it and the needle holes close , no big deal. With the digital prints, the hole will close but you can see where it was , there’s a little spot where the color is now missing . Digital prints have come a long way and the quality is getting better but that is one drawback . I cringe when I put someone else’s digital print quilt on the longarm , 99 % of the time it’s all fine and turns out beautifully, that one percent though 😮 it also seems like the digital print fabric frays or unravels more . I’d love to know why

Many historical vehicles including carriages and limousines of US Presidents and the original Wienermobile. would've also suggest visiting Greenfield Village (seasonal) which is next to the HFM.
