Hi Maggie with little funds for freshing your home a big bottlle of fabreeze extra strength, and dryer sheets. Open your windows give your place a good airing out vacuum your furniture and rugs and spray everything with the fabreeze. Then place the fabric softener sheets under the cushions. Let in light, add flowers. Then love your daughter. She's not coming to see your home, she's coming to see you.

The most important thing is that you are there. She is coming to see YOU. She doesn’t care about the house. A clean house, without dust, and clean floors always makes everyone feel welcome. And flowers, even in a drinking glass if you don’t have a vase.

    Hello Maggie .
Im 87 years old and fully understand where you are in terms of time, energy, and wanting to have everything "just right" for your daughter's visit.
It just occured to me that you dont really have to spend money on new things. What seems old, and maybe boring to you, bit it is still brand new to your daughter if its been 8 years!
Its been said so many times in these comments...clean! But dont kill yourself doing it. Pace yourself. Choose one or two special things to do each day above and beyond your normal routine. Use your money for good food, a couple of special treats for her. And keep smiling. That is what she will notice and remember the most.
Breathe. Love who you are and let it show.

I would add a couple of little touches that the high-end hotels do: a nice large bottle of water where she’ll be sleeping (preferably glass), an assortment of different flavored teas or cocoas in a tiny dish (or pretty teacup) on the nightstand, and placing several individually wrapped chocolates bedside.

As a professional home stager for 18 years, I would say “setting the stage” for a warm “welcome home” experience definitely begins with decluttering and cleaning. Fresh flowers that compliment the room and a home baked something or other is always a good idea as well! Freshening up the bed with white/soft white linens gives a clean, crisp spa like feel to a bedroom. Creating a welcome basket for her room with bottled water and some of her favorites is another nice touch. A favorite quote comes to mind “a smile is a curve that can set a lot of things straight” ~ so whatever you do, do it with a smile and simply ENJOY being in one another’s presence. We’re all pulling for you Maggie… sending lots of love and heartfelt prayers your way for memories that will last a lifetime❣️🙏🏼😘

I agree with the welcome basket idea. My daughter creates a small coffee/tea table in the bedroom in the wintertime, but I feel for the summertime it would be nice to have a pitcher (which you can pick up so many places inexpensively) with water and ice and some lemon or lime slices thrown in. You can place this on a nightstand with glasses, and it will make the bedroom special, like someone really took the time to do something extra to make it comfortable. Good luck, Maggie. I'm sure it will be beautiful.

Maggie wish I had a picture so I could help you. I am a retired designer. First and most important is getting rid of clutter. The first impression starts before you walk in the house. A wreath on the door and a nice welcome mat. One of the first things is maybe rearrange your furniture by even shopping your on home. Moving things from different rooms makes it feel different and new to you. Make sure everything looks clean and smells great. Wax Warmers are nice and gives your home a wonderful smell. Also fresher baked items give the inviting welcome. Fresh white bedding and white towels and washcloths looks wonderful. If you store things on top of your refrigerator clean it off. Make sure your counter tops are clean and clear. A small lamp on the kitchen counter looks great and brings warmth to the kitchen. Lighting is very important use lamps instead of over head lighting. A welcome basket with a book or magazine’s a beautiful bar of good smelling soap a couple of goodies in it in case she would like a snack and a drink. A small night light is very welcomed. Fresh flowers are very important. One of the nice things is to have a extra toothbrush and toilet items in the welcome basket incase she forgot something. Thrift stores are amazing place if you need even lamps. A beautiful bowl of fresh fruit . The things I have mentioned doesn’t cost much but makes a big difference. I am sure if you shop your home you probably have a lot of what you need. Remember she is coming to see her mother so the other things are just a special touch. I sure the hug and love you give will make her feel so welcomed and loved. If I lived close I would loved to do this for you. Now relax and enjoy the special time together.. I am 76 and I just love to make a home look inviting and cozy. God bless. Have an amazing time. Let us know how everything goes.

hi maggie- i don't ever strive to make my home look luxurious or expensive...i always strive for it to be cozy and welcoming and warm, and i don't want the sorts of things everyone else has or is doing or using or installing. i want the sort of home people feel like they just got a big hug, and is just me...homebody, ocean lover, gardener, writer, lover of art and all things beautiful ...for starters. aside from all the other great suggestions, when i have a guest coming to stay, no matter who it is, i make sure there are nice, clean linens on the bed and that the room is sparkling clean., and i put a fresh laundered white towel on top with a new, great smelling soap (in case they want to take a quick shower after a long trip) then, i have a lovely rose ceramic platter that i put on the dresser by the lamp, and it always includes a pink glass water decanter with a glass on top (it is a set and is lovely), filled with water, of course, some home made cookies freshly made that made my house smell awesome, some chocolate and an apple with a very small bouquet of flowers from my garden. it tells your guest...you matter to me. 💕🥰 people won't remember how your house is decorated, but they will always remember how you made them feel, and the comfort and love of home...enjoy your daughter!!!!

I just cleaned and painted our French Doors that go out to the back porch. I scrubbed the porches , put new material on the cushions..not a lot of money but so refreshed and clean. I woukd tell Maggie if she can not decanter the room her daughter is in, sweep, mop ..use something like Gain detergent...it will make your house smell so good. Check the light bulb in the lamp on the night stand. Even if you have to put stuff in your trunk of your car...don't have extra stuff in the bedroom she us in. Remenber her favorite dessert. If you don't feel like cooking take her out to a diner that is not too expensive. I too, like fresh flowers. Pretty soon I can cut my own zinnias.

Declutter, take everything that is not very beautiful off of your counters and mantle and furniture and store then away. 3. Clean your lower level and most seen windows inside and out. Then open every blind and drapery. These three are free except for sweet equity and will transform your home.

Just the smell of her cooking was all I needed to feel like I was home again. I remember the lighting in the living room, the glow of the lamp at night as we sat talking. Just enjoying being together was so special. I understand you want your home to be pretty, many great suggestions have been made. I would concentrate on her bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and your own bedroom. I used to love sitting on my Mom’s bed while we laughed and talked. How I miss her. There are some fabulous ideas here from beautiful women. I must confess to watching this with tears in my eyes for all the outpouring of love. So I won't add anything practical other than to say I always stand at the door to welcome anyone who is visiting my house the moment I hear them arrive. No one is going to have to ring my doorbell when I'm expecting them. I want them to feel that I am excited by their visit and that they're so welcome. Same when people are leaving. Even if I'm having a party and someone is leaving I will see them to their car and wave till they're gone! No one is a 'See yourself out'. Maggie, just relax. Your daughter is the best guest ever. All you have to do is make her feel that x

I think if I was your daughter, I would love to have some of your best home cooking rather than splurging on dinner out. She might not get back to visit anytime soon. I love Susan's ideas for decorating. I would also suggest that you talk to your church ladies group or a community ladies group and ask for help in cleaning your house. In return, you could make a small donation throughout the year to the ladies organization that helped. I can remember doing this for several elderly ladies that were no longer able to house clean their whole house. These were projects that we decided to do because we were young and able and they could no longer handle it on their own. You might be surprised if you make a couple of phone calls and then they would just show up at your house and get the job done.

I agree with all of what Susan said. Make your home very clean and decluttered, even if you have to pack away stuff in boxes and put in the attic or basement. Clean your chandeliers, lamps and mirrors so they sparkle. No piles of paper, magazines, books or mail around, get a storage bin for those things and put them out of site or under the bed or donate your books and things. Get rid of your winter coats/sweaters so your hall closet and your daughter's bedroom drawers have more room (put in a box with cedar balls). Organize and clean out your kitchen drawers. Throw out any chipped or cracked coffee cups or dishes. Make the furniture you do have shine with polish or some kind of cleaner and then either vacuum them or use a lint roller. Clear out your kitchen counter tops, store most of that stuff and use Bonami to make your sinks and tubs sparkle. I would remove old scatter rugs and replace with new ones or nothing at all. TJ Max is my go-to for cheap decor. New sheets, pillows and bed coverings from TJ Max. Put-up sheer curtains of white or ivory to replace old heavy drapery/valances. I also agree with Susan about potted plants and flowers. I like a bowl of fruit or a bowl of lemons or lemons and limes as decor. New bathroom towels and kitchen towels can be had at Targets and Kohl, cheaply. A few plants from Home Depot or Lowes can be affordable and even diffuser sticks in a nice smelling scent. Spray old furniture with Fabreeze and like Susan said get more lighting for your rooms. If you have money left over, you can cover your couch with a couch cover and some throw pillows. Can you rearrange your furniture in new ways or reuse your China in different ways? If you have China take it out and use it. Purchase two large planters of outdoor flowers to put on your front steps, I got mine at our local supermarket. It makes for good curb appeal. Enjoy your visit with your daughter and do not worry, she is coming to see you. And thank you Susan for adding to her savings.

I just had a suprise visit from my brother from Scandinavia.Possibly the last time we shall be together in person. His daughter and son come bvb to me every year. All they want to do is sit around the kitchen table, drink tea and chat. Your company is all your daughter has in mind. She may not even notice a new lamp. Your daughter wants to be with her mother.I hope you both chat, laugh and remember all your good times. Be in the moment. Thats all that matters. I wish you both the very best. Susan, I was so touched by your generosity to Maggie that I had tears in my eyes. How very kind you are. Your garden looks so beautiful and inviting, as does your entire home. One thing I do is place battery operated candles around my combination library, meditation room. They flicker a soft yellowish glow and look both welcoming and comforting. I also place soft colored coordinated throws on my couches and lounge chairs. They are very soft to the touch and invite you to take a nap or just feel cozy reading a book. I shop online for home accessories at both Walmart and Amazon. They are always offering good deals. I'm on a restricted social security budget like Maggie and I know how limiting that can be. Maggie, I just know your home is going to look so warm and welcoming for both yourself and your precious daughter. Please savor your time together and make some new memories. Susan, God Bless your beautiful soul, we all love you and that adorable little Desi.

Maggie, I live with my 85 year old mother, her (our 🤷🏼‍♀️ ) home is clean but it is also what I call lived in. And it has been this way my entire life. My daughter is here right now with my grandaughter for their “summer” visit. We have actually discussed this very topic and she has said, if I walked into my Nannie’s house or my Mother’s house and it was super duper clean and fixed up and a certain, fussy way (I am not saying anybody’s house is fussy) I would be very, very upset because I know that both of you took the time to make it a certain way just for us, and neither one of you have that as your priority, never have, so don’t start now. I want to walk in like when I was a child, plop down on the couch, read a book while you both go crazy over my daughter and keep her occupied. I already have a 5 star hotel experience here, I have a huge and comfortable bed with quilts that my great grandmother made that still smell like her. I have a tv in my room and I can watch whatever I want whenever I want. I have excellent toilet paper 🧻 (I mean you really gotta wonder about this one 😂) that I don’t have in my own house. And I always have my favorite foods that you know that I love and manage to cook every single night and that is priceless. And now you do it all for my daughter too. This is our favorite time of the year, to be here with both of you.
I know this wasn’t really your question, however, if you perhaps cook food she loved as a child, if you can recreate some of those memories, I don’t think that will be lost on her. Perhaps involve her in the changes you wish to make in your home. All of my Mother’s grandchildren, there are 7 of them, will show up in a second if she says, “rearrange the furniture” or “I need someone to help me with the yard” in a group text. They love to help her, they feel the need to help her, it gives them good feelings to help her. Perhaps see if your daughter is interested in doing this as a joint project and, if so, do it together. People love to help, especially family, sometimes the most important thing you can do is include them in the process. Find out what she might love to have in her room away from home and make it that way. Then she will have a room for her when she visits next time. And if you come across things she might like to have, give them to her. My Mother tried to throw away her mother’s handmade aprons that I remember as a child and I said, have you lost your mind, I want them and I know others will as well. She was like, these old things? You never know what you might get rid of before she gets there that she might actually love to have. Just some thoughts. T ✌🏻

Hi Maggie, I will echo some other ideas I’ve read on the comments…. Just clean and organize as best you can. Air out the house. Some fresh flowers on a table. Maybe a candle. Bake something she likes. Focus on her room…. clean fresh bedding (doesn’t have to be new) Don’t be surprised if she needs some ‘down’ time. As an introvert I really need little mental breaks during visits to recharge, and since it’s been a while since you’ve seen each other there can be added stress. So make her room a refuge for her and don’t feel bad if she needs to retreat now and then. Enjoy your visit!!

She is coming to see YOU! Now...just for the fun of it, buy a new welcome mat & a pretty potted plant for the porch - just put most everything else away that is cluttering the porch. Inside set out a little dish of good chocolates by her bed. Flowers, of course, flowers. Fluff up the guest bed with a great pillow and turned down the sheet while placing a throw at the end of the bed. Perhaps a couple of new coffee/tea cups that you two could share a moment together. Perhaps spending some of that $250 on yourself would be a great idea as well. No stress. I am rooting for a wonderful time for you. In fact, I'm going to pray a little prayer for you as well. I asked my son , what his first thought was , when he entered my home.
HE said the smell and memories .
I have mostly used Avon's sweet honesty, as a underlying smell.
I thought about my memories, of my Mom's home. It was her smile when she'd see me. And the same clean decor I remembered. As for smell, it was of fresh air. As she had a window , with a fan going.
you don't need a strong odor or a lot of expensive 'stuff'. Just loads of love and happy memories.
    Also enjoy her visit.

We went to The Salvation Army and found a great big rug , for only $ 20.00 !!!! Everyone that has come to my house likes that rug. So, now , you have inspired me to thrift, thrift !!! So much fun, such an adventure. I could spend the entired day in just one p!ace. I also boght a beautiful dove from Lenox payed 2.00 or $3.00 for it. I saw it at an antique place for over $75.00 !!! So my axvise to this beautiful kady is, just clean your house, place 1 or 2 good smelling candles, get some f!owers and go thrifting !!!! One more thing, buy a frozen appke pie ( if you don't feel like baking)
and make sure it's done wben she enters your home. The smell of a just baked aple pie is very conforting, even realtors use this trick. I will be praying that everything will be all that you hope for and more. God bless. ❤.

Oh this one made me cry. It reminds me so of my mother-in-law, may she rest in peace. She was so easy to please and was most happy when surrounded by her children. Sadly, after she fell and could no longer live in her home, my husband (her youngest son) and I were her company although the other three sisters lived close by. So it always breaks my heart to hear stories of older parents not having visits from their adult children for months or years at a time. I hope Maggie reaches out to neighbors to help her if it will make her feel better to have her home special for her daughter. And so very kind of you, Susan, to send her such a generous gift. I always tell my friends that I come to see them, not their home, and I mean that. How they are is so important to me, not how beautiful or perfect their home is. I hope Maggie's daughter may take some time to also help her around the house during her visit.
I do love shopping thrift stores to find antiques and unique pieces (and candles) for my home. I don't have the space for flower stands, but I do try to change things up and move pieces around the house for a fresh look, or create my own pieces. And I do love natural light coming in. I feel a source of natural light in the home is good for the soul.

A dark blue thrift store bowl filled with a bag of lemons on the kitchen table or on a bathroom counter. A couple of bright new kitchen towels and some matching potholders. Vignettes on a dresser or fireplace mantle, made with things you already have--a stack of books with a framed photo on top next to a lamp, or drape a colorful scarf over a side table with an old jug or teapot, a small plant, and a figurine or candlestick-groupings of three are easy and look nice. Thrift stores have a wide assortment of nice art at reasonable prices if your walls need a lift, and a thin, light throw over an armchair in the living room looks good even when it's too warm to think about covering up. Add a new throw pillow to it--they're inexpensive--and you've added coziness. A small thrift store basket filled with small things from Walmart or Target--travel-size lotion, Chapstick, etc--is very welcoming on a bedside table. Bright, fresh new towels and a matching loofah in the bathroom, with a pretty hand soap dispenser and bar of nice body soap resting on a new washcloth or hand towel would be nice. And a smile--don't forget a smile. I hope you have a blessed, wonderful time with your reunion, Maggie. If you need to "eat out", there's nothing like a picnic in the park or your own back yard.

Maggie, grandma house to us was always beautiful, and clean. When she passed at 93, the light was gone. She was the home. None of us noticed it until she was gone. Funny but I never noticed how old some of her things were or how worn or chipped things were. If I had it over, I buy her things. Clean, and cook some special foods for her. Dress nice, get your hair done, put flowers in her room, makes sure the bed she sleeps in is fresh. Then do not waste a minute with her. My grandma house was like sunshine and smelt like it. Pick out a color you love and add an inexpensive throw and a couple of pillows new. You can buy pillow covers for sofa. Add a candy dish. Wash doors, and around knobs. Be yourself, relax, and she will enjoy being with you. It is not things but love. That was my grandmother. she was the decorations, the sparkle in the home, she loved people and young people. Her house was warm, and you felt at home there. She invited you in and her warmth embraced you. I miss her.

What I do is vacuum, dust and make everything shine with windex. Wash all your bedding, and towels. Frebree is my best friend. When I sold my house the realtor wanted to know everyone that comes to view your house asked she must be a cleaning lady. The house smells wonderful. I dusted the house with Carpet Fresh Rug Room Deodorizer Powder. It's cheap, and well worth it. Your home is a home. Sometimes a new rug in the kitchen helps too.

Anything that is "pressed down and shaken together" is to make room for more!! Susan, you cannot out-give God. So I pray He opens up the flood gates of Heaven and pours out mighty blessings to you and your family for your loving kindness ❤. Mighty blessings Susan...the kind you have to press down and shake together to make room for loads and loads more. God bless you Susan. You are a 💎!! Here are a few suggestions Maggie. First declutter and clean. Then, buy some lush ferns or green vining plants and hang them by your windows or place them on a table or stand. Buy a bag full of lemons and place them in a glass vase or tall jar (purchased at Dollar Tree) or wicker basket and place them on your kitchen counter (This is a realtor/celebrity hack they use when selling a house) because it exudes a sense of freshness. Buy some thick, plush white or turquoise guest towels for the bathroom (depending on the color of your bathroom walls). Purchase a bourquet of dried lavender flowers and place them in a glass vase in the bedroom where your daughter is going to sleep. You might want to buy a lovely frame and place a photo of your daughter and yourself in the bedroom. Sheer white curtains in the living room would be a nice touch. Perhaps you can buy a potful of bright and cheery bright colored flowers to place on the steps of the front porch and add a wreath of flowers or another cheerful looking wreath on the front door of your home. That would be very welcoming. If you are in the mood to paint, you could add a pop of dark green or bright blue color to the door. I love a hunter green door! Last, but not least, purchase some pretty sheets and pillow cases for your daughter's bedroom. It sounds like a lot but all of this will cost you less than $250 and you will have it all to enjoy after she leaves. I hope this helps!

Cleanliness, candles, flowers, everything you said about making the room she stays in luxury comfort. Small tray of her favorite snacks sitting by her bed with a small note from mom.
So precious of you Susan to help this dear lady out financially. I pray the week of the visit leaves her glowing and basking in the memories of her daughter coming to see her momma!

A clean house doesn’t cost anything. I love the idea of a bouquet of fresh flowers. I love putting mine in a mason jar with a ribbon tied around the neck of the jar. New towels and bedding would be my first purchase and then like someone else said before, bake some cookies and serve them on a pretty plate. Save some of the money for the two of you to go somewhere special for lunch.❤

I prefer faux flowers, they never die. I also have flameless candles in my bathrooms and throughout the house. For guests, I keep a basket of personal items in their bathroom for their use.
Other than that, straighten up clutter and make your home as comfortable as possible. In the living room, a candle with a lovely scent. Then just enjoy your daughter's company, cook some foods you know she will love, and add some good conversation. Perhaps after dinner, take a nice walk together. Enjoy.

Hi Maggie. I just wanted to add some things I thought of to help. Sometimes we dont have the ability to clear out the clutter. But we can make the clutter look better. For example, stack papers or books neatly, get little bins or trays and place similar items all in them instead of having them scattered around. Stack up books on the floor and place a vase on top!. Makes it look like it was intentional and a design choice. Overhead lighting can be harsh so if you have any of those, shut them off and use floor lamps or table lamps and use warm bulbs in them, they give off a nice warm glow. Any blankets thrown around, get a big basket and neatly place them in there. Open the curtains and light a scented candle.
Lastly, be kind, encouraging. loving and nurturing to your daughter and that is what she will see and remember.

All great ideas but one of the best, in my opinion, is to put a photo album beside your daughter's bed. Nothing sparks loving memories better than pictures and this should create wonderful conversation in the morning. And Susan? What a really fun "serendipity" you sent to Maggie.

Susan, this is Monday after I watched the video on Saturday night. I can’t take you enough. I was widowed five months ago after my life partner and husband at 52 years passed away. I’m also living in a new house because we sold her home of 33 years due all the stairs. It’s been a rough five months. My whole life is an adjustment. This video inspired me to make my new townhouse my home. I rearrange lighting, got candles, hung wall art. Clean out a ton of things including papers 🤦🏼‍♀️
Maddie, TH-cam her do make up and dressing up, but this inspired me more than anything. I’ve watched in the last five months. thank you Maggie for asking Susan to do this video. It has helped me to. Thank you, Susan, hope you’ll do more of this.
    Hugs , Pam

Maggie, when someone special comes to visit me, I make up a welcome basket & place it in their bedroom. I fill it with things like a small flashlight, some special chocolates, dental floss, extra toothbrush and toothpaste, lavendar spray for their pillow, a candle, etc. It’s SO fun to do & they all love it ❤

Hi Maggie If you are up to it- planning menus to have your daughter’s favorite meals and/ or treats - perhaps even cooking together cookies or desserts she liked growing up - If she is a coffee or tea drinker be sure to have those specific flavors she likes, and don’t hesitate to ask her what she likes to have to start her day and end her day. And if you can, plan a trip to a nice park nearby- sometimes sitting on a bench together in a natural setting is conducive to some meaningful conversations. Love to you ❤ Love to Susan and Desi❤

Susan is right declutter is the first thing to do. Then you can add the extra touches. Maybe your home is neat and tidy already ...you can start with fresh flowers or plants, cozy throw on the sofa, candles if you like them, her own towel and wash cloths, a box of chocolate or fruit basket with a card telling her how happy you are to have her visiting. Wreath on your front door. Mostly use some of the money for experiences...like going to a show or a thrift shopping trip together, lunch at a nice restaurant. You will have fun!
