    Gly, what's really good about your videos is that you keep the fans informed with everything you see and what something is for and how it works and telling the dates on any paperwork and you will let the fans know a story that goes along with it.💯👍💬

    This has got to be one of the best mine videos I've ever seen. The lighting and video clarity as well as the commentary was spectacular. Ohhhh....and the colours. Thanks to you both for an entertaining Sat. morning.

    Good to see guys haven't fallen into the recent trend on a couple of the the other mine exploration channels where they clearly go through the mine beforehand and plant a bunch of museum quality artifacts to "discover" along the way.
    I got interested in this kind of thing because of Frank and later found your channel and have watched enough of both of you to know that finding artifacts in good shape is pretty rare, much less under every loose board or stashed under piles of ore or behind a rock on just a constant basis.
    You just spice your videos up the classy way, some good clean humor and Pixar quality graphical editing!!

    What a tremendous mine! Within that big room some of the stolls have become bent over time. The entire adit turned into quite a maze for you two to navigate. When a person looks at this mine in introspect those miners did a stupendous job to clear the mineral, even having to leave pillars to keep holding up the material that they were drilling and chipping out. The haulage adits that the miners cleared look very much like a cave. What a great visual treat you gave us on this explore. Thanks you Gly & Frank.

      “Gly”: Yeah! I really enjoyed exploring this one. Here is some of the data of this mine without revealing its location:
      Operations date back to the 1880's and continued intermittently to recent times. Total estimated and recorded production of precious and base metals would be some 160,000 tons of ore containing about 130,582 oz. Au, 89,500 oz. Ag, 45 tons of Cu, 61 tons Pb and minor Zn. About 615 oz. of placer gold with some silver was produced, mostly prior to 1900. Some 1,100 short ton units of tungsten oxide has been reported shipped from the district as well as a few lots of sorted 20% manganese ore.

    Interesting, I don't think I've seen actual stairs before. Looks like a pretty modern mine (at least some of it) with those plastic lines running through there.
    Geeze that place was huge and extensive. Openings to other areas all over the place! I like having Frank there, he gives us a really good perspective on size in there. One word comes to mind: Cavernous!
    The magic, disappearing miner's cat. He had some kind of escape route.
    That mine was surely no place for an amateur. Twists and turns abound. Fantastic episode, thank you.

    Sure a lot of pretty colors down there. The biggest stope I ever saw I think was actually several totally collapsed levels that had been washed away down an underground river. Just a few hundred feet in the main haulage level was a short 30' decline, tall enough to walk in, with a 3' hole near the bottom. I crawled down to the hole on my belly and stuck my head through the 4' hole and was looking down about 500' to a huge river of water flowing buy and further than my light could see going to the left and right. Over to the other side of the stope was about 300 to 400 feet. Then I looked underneath myself, like toward my feet, and about crapped my pants when I realized I was laying on a thin layer of lava cap, about 4 inch thick, with nothing else below me for hundreds of feet, near the top of a huge dome that was the top of the stope. I later was told that the hole I crawled up to and stuck my head down was created by a woman who had walked in the short decline tunnel and the floor gave way. She fell through the floor, creating that hole in the lava cap, and her body was never recovered. I'm sure glad I decided to crawl in there on my belly to distribute my weight. I wish I had a camera back then, that was before digital video, and I couldn't afford a good VHS camera.

      Duck Landes
      “Gly”: Scary stuff. Next week you’ll see a mine where they used cactus for false floors and cut n’ fill. The stuff was as brittle as eggshells. Because the false floor had a layer of rock on it you’d have never known you were standing on 100+ year old cactus branches.

      That experience and the next mine I explored put enough scare into me to retire from the hobby. I had been doing it over 40 years and never gotten hurt, and figured the odds weren't in my favor anymore. As I came up to the portal of a mine I noticed the water in the entrance was freshly disturbed. Once I got in past the water I realized that the fresh prints in the mud of the animal that had just left as I got there was mountain lion.

      Mark Laisure: This was in a Northern California gold drift mine that was following an ancient river bed. There is an active volcano about 80 miles to the north that last last erupted 1914 to 1917, with an explosive eruption in 1915. I suspect the lava cap I was laying on was from an earlier eruption though since it was underground, and the lava cap from the 1915 eruption is mostly still on the surface.

    • @DFDuck55
      @DFDuck55 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gly: I was carrying a sidearm, but it still a bit disconcerting to go in a mine knowing a mountain lion just came out of it. I still explored the mine because it was a somewhat unique Chinese gold mine. The ribs, back, and gobbing were so perfect it was like walking in a tunnel rather than a mine. Not far off there was a Chinese mining town built entirely of stacked rocks. It's a kind of spooky location, we would camp near there for weeks at a time dredging for gold and at night you could hear children playing, and a few times I heard a steam train, which there was a train there in the mid 1800's that hauled lumber out of the mountains

    Frank and Gly are showing us just what it takes to travel around in a mine, just like miners. Does anyone like a swiss cheese mine. I think Frank was right: A month long series. Huge place. They had a hard time getting that air line in place in one piece. Nice Azurite, lovely colors. Around and around we go again. finally the exit out.

    Pretty impressive the work that those miners did; huge stopes! What was that spool used for as a part of the ore pass? What a maze of haulage adets. You two exploring together give some scope & perspective of the extent of that mine. Good to see the partnership, your filming and editing and Frank's limberness in traversing the "small crawls" and huge, worked out rooms. Thanks for another GREAT explore.

    Wow! What a unique hole! Looks like it must have been worked thru a few eras, huh? Parts look really old, then you have all the PVC and that giant f'n air line, must have been a decent sized operation later on! Cats have been known to hide in pretty small and confined spaces. If you notice, his ears don't change direction, but duck down, and what looks like his tail going down towards the water, was in fact going into the larger pipe at 26:56. He's smart enough to know the water is down lower and not a safe direction to go. You walked right over him and didn't know it, and he knew it to. LOL.

      It's a shame the cat wasn't rescued, I don't think they would be able to get out on their own. Cats can see in the dark, but even night on earth is not devoid of light, and a mine is pitch black. No light, nothing to see. Given all the different textures on surfaces in a mine, even feeling their way around would be futile. There's not much to go on the smell their way around either. I'd assume any animal in a mine that isn't a bat, will die down there if not pulled out. There's just no way it could keep track of its movements enough to navigate back to where it came in, and with all the pit falls, they will naturally end up deeper and deeper in the mine, only serving to further keep them from finding their way back. They could be walking around in circles without even realizing it.
      I think the cat only knew how to hide effectively because of the light. So it wasn't that the cat knew the mine well enough to hide, it's just that they had enough light to see where to hide in a pinch.

    Ok so I think I have an idea where the mine cat went to. There is a white drain pipe right where you saw the ringtail. It either went into the pipe or it went under one of the bottom rail tie boards. There was also a glint of something on the right side in the back of the flooded winze. I don’t know if it could jump that far and hide without leaving a simmer in the water

  • @gtgibbsgibbs7599

      "Gly": Yes, somebody was working down in that flooded winze where we saw the mine cat back in the early 80's. They were using all that PVC pipe and pumping the water out of the winze to both behind that bulkhead and up and out of the mine. I suspect the water storage behind the bulkhead was being used for their drills.

    Just a thought-perhaps sometime between adventure vids you guys make gear vid? A shakedown of what is in your backpacks and your equipment. There are a LOT of gear junkies out there and I'm sure it would get a lot of likes. As someone that used to go exploring in the 70s with just a couple cans of Coors stuffed in my pockets and a cheap flashlight I would like to see all the new gear too!

    Is it possible to get laser measuring devices to measure these shafts ect. I enjoy watching your vids, usually watch why I play my pc games on my second monitor! The support posts too... How do they put them there? How do they also make the little ore shoots that go through the rock to the next level. So many questions!!

    • @AbandonedandForgottenPlaces
      @AbandonedandForgottenPlaces  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      "Gly": That would be cool if they did and if it was cheap. Support posts (stulls) are wedged in with shims in stoped out areas. Ore shoots are made by blasting. That's ok, ask lots of questions and I'll do my best to answer.

      @@AbandonedandForgottenPlaces okay sweet. When they mark the depth levels on ladders in feet. That's the distance from the surface. But how do they know how many feet down they are at. Is it sea level or the level from the ground at that location?

      SuperNick 207
      “Gly”: So, if your down in a mine and your at the 200 level that means your 200 feet below the main haulage adit. The levels are always based off of the main level that goes to the portal and to the outside. Now, if your in a horizontal haulage adit and you see numbers on the wall that tells you how many feet you are from the entrance or portal. If your in a drift leading away from the main haulage adit and you see numbers on the wall then that tells you how many feet your from the main haulage adit.

    First off, thanks for your fascinating site, enthusiasm and deep knowledge. Can I ask a potentially stupid question. How do mines have such level floors? Is that something done as the mine progresses as a matter of course? Thanks for your patience on this one :))

    • @AbandonedandForgottenPlaces
      @AbandonedandForgottenPlaces  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      “Gly”: As the miners advance through the rock down a drift or adit for example they place what is called a “toe charge” at the floor or base of the main charge. This toe charge serves two purposes, it casts the rock out and away from the face being blasted. If delayed properly and it fractures the rock at floor level so that the void can be filled in with muck rock making for a flat floor. The process of mucking the waste rock out of the mine also helps level the floor as the miners progress. In a well drained mine the drift or adit will progress at a 1 x 3% grade allowing water drainage out of the mine.

    • @markszawlowski867
      @markszawlowski867 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This mine makes a Swiss Cheese look like a piker... Which hole do you go into first? Right hand rule doesn't work on a left handed corkscrew travelling through a moth-eaten Swiss cheese tunnel thought up by a brain-addled miner that has been snorting mercury fumes for a couple of decades. I don't think I have ever seen spliced stolls like the ballroom where the stolls are over 30 feet long. There is a bit of sulphides still on the face of the ribs and back and iron staining as well, but also looks like cuprite and chrysocolla, so there is some copper in there.. Glad you found some rails for the haul level, I was starting to wonder how the ore got out until I saw the rails. Too bad for the flooded winze, but where did the miners cat go? I'd like to see more of those critters - they sound like a great asset to get rid of the rats, mice, and other tasty munchies that would otherwise be a real pain in the backside. Well, beer:30 again and thanks for the awesome tour and video !!! I love this mine and would love to walk in it myself. I'll be headed South right after the first of the year and if you gentlemen are about, I'd love to be able to buy a couple of rounds at the local watering hole !!!

VERY twisty. And got to ask, what is this "approach", as I know you are trying different camera angles. I'd title this episode "Frank Schliting and his camera man". lol Really!? really!? wouldn't the camera views been enough without Frank having to jump, climb, scramble into each stope.
