    I have an interest in geology but never studied it at a high level so love watching your videos with explanations. Yup, the booze, we find booze at the back of complex mines from modern explorers, you wonder how they haven't killed themselves. what you call gobbing, in England, we call deads, often find tools behind them as when miners left the mine, often they didn't know if they would be back in days or months so would hide their tools back there.

      “Gly”: That makes allot of sense because in the larger mines it would be allot easier to hide your tools up in a drift than it would be to haul it all back out of the mine. I’m glad your enjoying the show! Thanks!

  • @chrisackerley1842
    @chrisackerley1842 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    That is some really good-looking ore in those pillars. It's no wonder they stoped out such huge areas. Seems like there's a lot of ore remaining, though. I wonder why they stopped mining? Economics, maybe? Price of silver went down? Is it possible they had a crusher of some sort, maybe even a couple of jaw crushers, mounted on the slab in that old building? If they were using a shaker table, the material that fed it must have been pretty small. Also, a shaker table would require water. Did you see a well? One other thing. That purple glass was all made before 1913. That was when they stopped using manganese in glass.

    • @AbandonedandForgottenPlaces
      @AbandonedandForgottenPlaces  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chris Ackerley
      “Gly”: No, I never found a well. My best guess is they were hauling the ore off someplace else to be processed. I’m almost certain that shaker table was from some more recent prospecting operations. Yes! This mine still has lots of good ore in it. That section of the mine with all the whiskey bottles would be a great place to dig for gold along that back wall.

    That whiskey mine looks like three finger Joe is in there playing a game of miner Jenga. With the mass of rock above, I can't even imagine the amount of potential pressure on that wood. If it was my mine, I'd be back filling some of the open areas before I dug any more out.

    In the tin shack that had lots of bags of ore samples, there was a modern and fairly new green plastic trash can with wheels, the exact same one I have for our household trash. Was someone recently mining there and hauling ore samples in the trash can? Not very sturdy to move rocks. Curious that you didn’t mention it’s presence.

    Good stuff.
    I went searching for the Stonehouse bourbon, the only thing I found was a newspaper ad from 1976 (fifth of bottled in bond only $4.37) nothing else except stonewood whisky (german, and certainly not bourbon) comes up at the usual whisky and bourbon reference sites, really highlights how well things are preserved out in the desert. Also makes me wonder who marketed it, or which of the big names bought it out and when. Funny how the non-mining things sometimes catch your attention.

I’d be surprised if he could even swing his pickaxe. Lol. I use a technique with my lighting that’s kind of a secret. • @AbandonedandForgottenPlaces

      “Gly”: Well, blue glass bottles were very popular in the early 19th century especially medicine bottles. They were made using cobalt oxide or copper oxide giving them that rich blue color. Darker bottles like blue or dark brown don’t stand up well when exposed to harsh sunlight for year after year. That’s why it’s next to impossible to find such a bottle laying in the desert that’s unbroken.

    As for how can anybody mine with that much whiskey in them? sorry to answer a question with a question, but How can anybody mine without that much whiskey. My personal preference for finding the best color in rocks is good ole Ezera Brooks, as its one of the few good Scuds that still uses a cork in the bottle. that is important when it comes to gold mining.

    2:38 sorry but you went into a long convoluted explanation of a piece of equipment that would require a steady supply of water with not a drop to be found there and yet the squire cage fan caught your attention but you were dumfounded why it was there and promptly dismissed it as be integral to the machine. So, too bad you didn't lift up that flat piece that was hinged. Also, to give you a chance to raise your awareness, are you able to give an alternate explanation as to what that machine was used for and how it was designed to function. Hint, its got something to do with a squirrel in a cage driven by a motor.

And on a different wavelength, I am a 67 year old Aspie as in Asperger's Syndrome and I absolutely LOVE learning and explaining things to individuals so they are no longer ignorant about something. It is meant as good clean fun. The odd time someone kicks me in the ass because of their iron grip on what they perceive as being correct, that's when I leave because of their close mindedness appears to be unshakeable. When I made this video roughly year ago I was experimenting with how my audience would react and interact with my videos. Long since then I learned many things about my audience and have long since critique my format and filming style. @@AbandonedandForgottenPlaces Nah! Just poking a hole in your pronunciation and gives others a chance to understand the word usage. Eh! Listen to how you say the word, you put an r into it. Frank had a similar experience with serpentinite. He was saying it as Sir-pentinite and Sur-pentinite There were a few of us here that had some fun with him related to the Knights of the Roundtable, I started with the question who's Sir Pentinite as I couldn't find it via Google. He kept telling everyone it was deposited in an ocean until I clued him into it being an Ultramafic rock that comes up from deep in the earth, with lots of olivine in it making it an interesting looking rock. In his area, it tends to be an OLD rock and subsequent intrusives have cooked it, metamorphosed it, so it has a slippery feel of talc and is extremely unstable in the mines in his area.
