it's a great video showing how higher minimum wages absolutely destroy small businesses and help out the largest businesses by destroying the smaller competition, and also just how much the government makes it hard to run a business with crazy taxes and labor laws.
@@tola6327 If you're going to point to raising minimum wage as an issue, and not even to point out to the fact that raising the floor for income has a linear progression effect on the price of goods and services around the nation (we will ignore this point, and just look at the EXACT example Rudy game). Ignoring all of this, if we raise the floor of labor costs what will happen is that we get some generally better quality employees. You can look at actual case study after case study of small businesses that experimented with this over the years (I've personally done 3 businesses in my local city as some case studies), and see that what happens when you RAISE the wages, you also RAISE the quality of employee. In Rudy's example, if he were hiring 2 part time employees at $7.25 (min wage in Florida), you'd see him with more than likely 2 low quality employees (be it their work ethics, effort, intelligence, age, etc.). Someone that needs to work to put food on the table for their family will NOT work for minimum wage at a location like this - what you will get instead is high school/college kids looking for part time work, or low intelligence employees that are unfortunate enough to not get much better elsewhere. Using Rudy's own words, there is an INVERSE effect of employee wage/labor costs vs theft. The reason he mentions this, and I'm sure he would agree, is that with hiring higher quality employees will lower the risk of theft, and this is the REAL business risks that you won't learn from college, books, or your choice of news information.
@@FatBoyzAreUs doesn't matter how amazing your employees are if you're paying them so much that you're destroying your already razor thin profit margins, as a tiny retailer selling standardized products, you can't just raise prices to cover for the increased cost, your customers will go elsewhere, reducing your shrink a bit isn't going to make up for the difference.
@@tola6327 The other end of things is if the market values its workforce and pays them more as a whole then people, as a whole, have more money and businesses make more money. The goal of an economy is to be balanced, where the demand is met by the supply. If the demand for services and products is stagnant because a large percentage (20% is large) are unable to buy non essential goods and services this is bad economics. Yes, you don't want everyone to be a millionaire, because then demand is crazy high, but the supply is crazy low. This would cause inflation and would be unbalanced as well.
@@tola6327 If you cannot afford to pay your employees a living wage because it destroys your razor thin profit margins, you do not deserve to succeed as a retailer for a niche product. And if your employees are on minimum wage, they then qualify for government programs like Section 8 Housing or SNAP. You're asking the government to subsidize your small business because you won't fork over a reasonable income. But that doesn't matter because raising minimum wage has a positive effect on the overall economy as people making minimum wage have to spend their money immediately on survival, instead of hiding it away in an offshore bank account. More people spending money means more people making money. The idea raising minimum wage is somehow punishing to small business is a spook created by libertarian think tanks funded by the Kochs and Waltons. Higher wages means more disposable income, which is important for a niche market like trading cards. It's also really dumb to trust people making minimum wage to not do shady shit with your inventory that's easily transported, hidden, stolen, and sells for hundreds (sometimes thousands) of dollars. Do you want to get pissed off customers because your booster boxes are mapped? Because paying people $7.50 an hour and then handing them hundreds of dollars of easily tampered with merchandise is how you get pissed off customers from boxes that are mapped.

As a store manager, please keep these coming. Not just for me watching but so newbies entering the card slinging world understand what their getting into.
I watch a channel called Collect Pokémon with around 7,000 subscribers. That person gets around 15 - 20 messages per 2 hour stream (daily stream) of people requesting information on how to buy directly from distributors. Since I am no store owner I can only imagine how much work you have to put in to break even. If only 2 or 3 of those people asking each day seriously want to get into the business, a lot of them will bankrupt themselves. In Germany, even established LGS' have had huge problems surviving those past few years.
@@ObstagoonGuylet's be honest LGS in Germany are next to non existant,... I have 1 LGS in a 1 hour driving distance one way, I don't think there's a place in any reasonable distance left for me when it comes to playing yu-gi-oh. So I gotta support that 1 store I have if I want to attend prereleases and not drive 2+ hours one way.
You didn't deduct the monthly expenses in month three. Bank account should still be sub $50k.... but I know that's not the point of the video. Thanks for bringing back whiteboards Rudy!
Did anybody else notice the giant impending cash flow problem with Timmy's Em? They are buying/selling $27,000 worth of product with only $45-50K in the bank... That means they only have enough cash to withstand less than two months of expenses (inventory is an expense Rudy didn't mention). This means they have to sell through EVERYTHING they buy every month in less than two months. Market crashes can come at any time, especially with how hot the market is when Timmy's Em opened. If their sales dive 50+% for a few months at a time, they are done. Many stores learning this the hard way recently. That's why a lot of people recommend to have 3-12 months of expenses in cash for emergencies like that to limit risk.
I managed a Liquor store for a few years. That store made .50 on beer and 1.00 on bottles of wine or liquor. Distributors always had a special on wine and liquor, rarely beer. Always buy five cases get one free. We could pass the savings on to the customer or catch up if we were behind. Sadly, the fact that alcoholics drink every day and always the same thing was what made it profitable. Holidays were good to us, too. I worked overtime for cash under the table.

@Aeoxmusic at the mentioned company, this was one in 2005. It was also more about employees, either purposefully or accidentally, ringing things up wrong.
Thanks and this is why I'll always "rip myself off" a little bit when I go to a local store. I'd be more sad if the local store wasn't around than if I didn't buy a few things I wanted because it was a few bucks more at the LGS. Brick and mortar will have to redefine itself and do multiple other things to move forward. e.g. If you have a large place and you're open during weekdays, consider renting out some of your space for startups so they don't have to overcommit to rent. Might not be a huge amount, but it could cover some of your expenses. (especially Monday through Thursday daytime where most LGS are like graveyards.) Ideally you can offer something that an online shop cannot. Make best use of the space! Buying singles will go far, but be more innovative. Might not be the dream of owning a LGS, but it's better than going broke.
Watching this again, can just really appreciate all the effort you put into this and the emotion you show. Running a business like this is obviously really tough. Hang in there, Rudy, get those tacos!

I think the philosophy of opening a business in 2020 is the same as Rudy's Philosophy of buying vintage cards when they were down at the beginning of 2020. If you have a great business plan and a unique idea or if you are in the right location, now is a great time to open a business because competition has been cut tremendously. Is there risk? Yes. And higher than normal risk. People need to assess that risk and understand if the timing is still good. In person Brick in Mortar stores really need to assess that risk, especially in the US because of shut downs.
The difference in the philosophy of buying RL cards and opening a business right now is there is much more market data on RL card price trends and the market data for new business opening is almost non-existent. Also if it's a bear market on RL cards it wouldn't matter because Rudy isn't selling and if you open a store and then get shut down from covid you are so far behind the 8-ball good luck getting around it.
Thank you for your work! I remember talking to graduate of business management college. He was very dismissive and hostile to the thought of workers stealing inventory. Yet this is a reallity.

@Austin Duke It's even more painstakingly annoying that Wizards only sells sealed product to brick and mortar stores. At least with Pokemon you can continue to work out of your basement.
It is my plan to open a LGS within the next 3 to 4 years. Its been a lifelong dream. I have saved this video to a playlist, so that I can watch it once a month. This will be my blueprint when I open my store. Thank you for being so honest Rudy. I have learnt so much from your channel over these last few years!

The largest city in my state has studio apartments going for $1,500/month downtown. A decently sized restaurant paying only $3,500 in a major metropolitan area is a fucking steal lmao.
Rudy, to this day these are my favorite types of videos and I enjoy every minute of every one of these you put out. Super thankful I saw one of your “so you want to open a Game Store?” Videos years before this insane year. We were a special Timmy in that year and we’d like to think we still are. Thanks Rudy. This is my favorite kind of video. These business videos may not get many views now. But, I think a lot more people will watch this kind of stuff in a couple of years. Someone opening any kind of brick and mortar store will need to run the numbers beforehand.
we had a employee opening packs once in a while for himself and "forgetting" to pay. owner was counting the packs before leaving to catch him... if you steal 3-5 packs on a booster boxes you basically kill the margin on the box. don't steal ever... its like selling the wheels on your own car to make a profit. the car will be unusable after that!
So what I take from this is if you want to help out your LGS your better off buying energy drinks than magic cards? Great video by the way. As some one who’s not so financially minded it was very educational. 🙂
Rudy, I love the breakdown for new businesses: Here's a few of my comments as a fellow floridian (MIA... sigh): 1. $2,000/month rent: Pretty low for most places where there's enough demand to open a physical location. Might be better to try and get away with a second floor apartment in a mixed use building in a commercially/mixed zoned area (possible in some locations, especially college towns for some reason?), or selling basements (also much cheaper in some areas). Some landlords are struggling so much, you could potentially get a temporary *corona deal* where you can take a space off their hands for the carrying cost of that space. I have successfully approached a few landlords to do this in a mall that is going to be demolished sometime next year with corona delaying their ability to start. This was NOT for a card shop. Unrelated business. 2. Employees: Great time for underemployed or unemployed people with some capital to try and "go for broke" self-running the business without extra people. True mom and pop. Saves some cashflow for more important things and gives you a chance to at least make a profit. 3. Products: -Sealed isn't worth selling in my head unless inflated prices. Possibly never. Pre-orders and the first weeks of release at some crazy hype price, okay. Selling newer product as a deal with older product or accessories with much higher margin... okay. Aim for at least 15% blended margins on those sales or why bother unless it's a loss leader for other stuff in your store and online? Unless you are making much more from other products in your store/website, it's not worth the capital in my mind. Otherwise, warehouse it a year or two minimum. Maybe think long term and start collecting a bunch of sealed before you even open a store. Break singles like crazy before release and potentially have your sketchy 3rd party llc selling on ebay. -Singles obviously give you a fighting chance if you can keep flipping them creatively throughout the year. -Warhammer junk - I keep hearing good things about. -In-house card protection products: Binders, sleeves, etc. This can also be sold online separately to boost margins. -Bulk flipping: making in-house theme packs or mystery boxes with a mix of good and crappy singles as a chase. -Box breaking (ideally with video recording for potential youtube income) at way higher than box prices per pack. -Sell older sealed boxes you warehoused at slightly below market prices to generate online and local traffic that increases your repackaged singles products and accessories sales. Targets and walmarts that little billy hits up to clear their shelves don't offer protection and other accessories that most people don't really think about when they order product. -Consignment: Little billy wants to flip pokemon stuff? Utilize your website/reputation to help sell that product for them for a cut of the gross. Little billy probably has a pretty crappy ebay or amazon account and people do not like buying from virgin accounts. Take advantage of that. Normal food/drink: Sure, why not. Make the place chill enough to allow bulk-pulling in a friendly environment. Little billy might want to start a youtube opening channel and doesn't have the space or the lighting at home. ?? wild-card: Foreign fun food/drink: Stock up on some bulk japanese candy/products that can't be found locally. We all know the poke nerds tend to flirt with anime and weebification. Appeal to that a little. 4. Fraud/Theft/ Etc: I disagree about pay and theft. While paying less causes theft increases, even well paid employees can and will steal for any number of reasons. Fraud reinforces my point that selling below around 15% margin for any product is just downright a bad move. Yes, you can't just open a store and sell sealed at 15% margin, but I would rather take the risk of holding than guarantee only 5% returns on my money. Those are just terrible margins which would be pretty much neck and neck with generalized inflation at 3-4% annualized. As you said, there is a base to the market. You buy any product that violates that base, and you hold steady until you can get at least 15-25% on your investment. Otherwise, just buy stocks and don't even bother. Just so you know, I do own a couple businesses. Physical business can suck an egg all day. I would minimize the physicality of a store as much as possible. My amazon and ebay businesses see plenty of fraud, and as you said, it seems to be around 1-2% of annual sales. On top of that is returns at roughly 3% of gross sales, which can be mitigated with a restocking fee or no-refund policy. Margins online are just lovely. 40% profit on my online products when I barely break 25% in physical. Modern card sellers need at least half of their business online minimum to make any real money seems like.
These are all great ideas but this video is targeted at the guy that thinks he special and probably doesn't have experience or education. I have a few ideas I would add to this but what you've written is solid.

🔥 video! Someone give Rudy a Ted Talk, or Netflix special, or an episode on Adam ruins Everything.

They stole massive amounts of money from customers, myself included, and then months later charged customer's cards a second time, myself included.
With that said, I'm going to pretend from here on out that @BrokenGames is a representative of Mystical Games and Collectibles. That makes me smile, and brings joy to my heart, to be able to treat both entities as one, and immerse all of my hatred and loathing into a single place :D

People keep asking.. when I'm going to open a store front. I say never. Instead I networked with stores and pay them 5-10% upcharge for distro pricing. 40% profits 4 months in a row embracing whatnot and direct sales vs eBay. Awesome video, thank you thank you for the insights!!
Giant flaw in this video: Timmy's Emporium AND Taco Stand. Guaranteed success.
I am not kidding. Every game store that succeeds where I am is next to a taco place of some kind. Seriously.

@MrTheoneandonly Where do you life?
"Three rares, three foils, and three tacos per pack."
Id definitely buy that XD
You didn't deduct the monthly expenses in month three. Bank account should still be sub $50k.... but I know that's not the point of the video. Thanks for bringing back whiteboards Rudy!

I like how Rudy is basically a 1980s NYC Yuppie stockbroker high on cocaine without actually being in NYC or high on coke.
don't be deceived
i am not sure about coke part :D
Hey Rudy, in Jacksonville you have to pay personal property taxes on that grass and palm tree also.
So what ur saying is that I should open my own store
To be honest, I love this videos, but I usually leave them until I have enough time to watch the whole thing.
Please keep making them
Please do more of these, the minority really appreciates them!

This was exactly what I was waiting for. Been refreshing my TH-cam's for an hour now and here it is
Thanks and this is why I'll always "rip myself off" a little bit when I go to a local store.
(especially Monday through Thursday daytime where most LGS are like graveyards.)
Ideally you can offer something that an online shop cannot. Make best use of the space! Buying singles will go far, but be more innovative. Might not be the dream of owning a LGS, but it's better than going broke.
This type of video is why I became a fan of the channel.

In person Brick in Mortar stores really need to assess that risk, especially in the US because of shut downs.
agree
The difference in the philosophy of buying RL cards and opening a business right now is there is much more market data on RL card price trends and the market data for new business opening is almost non-existent. Also if it's a bear market on RL cards it wouldn't matter because Rudy isn't selling and if you open a store and then get shut down from covid you are so far behind the 8-ball good luck getting around it.

I'm concerned about how many people are in Rudy's basement.
Based on Timmy's income, I'd be more worried that his wife is hanging out in the basement with the accountant.
No one ever set foot in the basement and lived to see the sun again.
Rudy, I love the breakdown for new businesses: Here's a few of my comments as a fellow floridian (MIA... sigh):
3. Products:
-Sealed isn't worth selling in my head unless inflated prices.
Not necessarily brick and motor but I’ve had business on my mind heavily this year, and this has been very eye opening and I’m happy I stopped to watch the entire thing.
