Sorry to post on such an old video, but your tutorials have REALLY helped me in building my retropie arcade1up cabinet.
I have a latched (NC/NO) LED power switch that I originally used and it worked great. I recently had to do a fresh install and can not find the info on what script I used to use to get it to work properly again. I have it so that it powers on and the LED turns on, but I can't get it to do a safe shutdown no matter what I try. I hit the button when the Pi is on, and nothing happens. I'm currently using GPIO3, GPIO14 and GND. Could you please help me?
Is this still valid for pi4??
Hi ETA PRIME, congratulations on your work, it works great on my Raspberry Pi 3 model B ! I wanted to ask you, how can I turn off my fan that has 3 cables (power pin2 - ground pin9 - gpio pin8) during shutdown? The fan turns on correctly during boot, but when I turn it off via the button it stays on and continues to spin. It only stops if I turn off the power by unplugging the power cable. Is there a mod to do this? Can you help me? Thanks, best regards from Italy

It's a one line that install the package for you. Pin setting is still the same.
i did al the steps but now my pi is stuck on a black screen after booting
For those of you that have a Raspberry Pi 4, replace step 6, 7, and 8 with the ones below and it will work.
Next you need to get RPi.GPIO:
6. wget pypi.python.org/packages/source/R/RPi.GPIO/RPi.GPIO-0.7.0.tar.gz
Uncompress the packages:
7. sudo tar -zxvf RPi.GPIO-0.7.0.tar.gz
move into the newly created directory:
8. cd RPi.GPIO-0.7.0

all I get with putty when I enter host name is a black screen and a green curser top left corner. cannot type
Now the pi never starts it's only showings the start-up screen and then shuts down

Hey there, I’m using one of these goop pins for the fan. Will this work on any other pins or can the fans be moved. I guess they’d need to be reprogrammed.

first command should be "sudo apt-get update" not "sudo apt-get install update"

Anyone able to help me on this - Im building the NeoGeo X case with a pi, but id like the button on the top (menu) to make the pi quit retropie and go back to the game select menu (as if you press a hotkey combo to quit the game).
Anyone know how to do this? Its pretty much these steps but instead of it running a power down command, it would act as a keyboard key button that id press when configuring the controllers.
Great tutorial. However at 12:14 it looks like it just powers off the pi. Is there a way to configure it so it does the safe shutdown with the button?

Why not just add “dtoverlay=gpio-shutdown” to the config.txt?? Done without having to do anything else!!!!!!

This doesnt work at all anymore. I get a lot of failures and unable to loacte packages and 404 not found. This used to work and sadly now it doesnt. Anyone have a working script for this?
Never mind. I figured it out. Your first command should be "sudo apt-get update" Not "sudo apt-get install update"
I had to do a "sudo apt-get udpate" then "sudo apt-get upgrage" first to get it to work

ETA can you wire the fan and led in parallel and have the fan shut off when the pie shuts off and the led?
How do you boot in RetroPie ?
So the script to install Python doesn't work anymore. Keep getting errors and "failed to fetch" along with "404 not found"
should I not use the piswitch that comes with the canakit?
My pi keeps shutting down after I connect the power switch. Led is fine but the button is killing the power

Is this on and off method "safe" should be because of the script, correct?
this doesn't seem to work for me. I followed every step to the "T" and yet my button doesn't do anything. I swapped the button with another and still nothing
The reason it shouldn't ever corrupt the SD Card is because the script calls the proper linux shutdown command "shutdown -h now" and therefore shuts down and unmounts the SD card.
Does it shut down or go to standby?
Weird that the script has buttonState1 = GPIO.input(5) in it yet the actual Pin5 is GPIO3.
Does this work for the raspberry pi zero?
To copy & paste text from notepad to putty. (Copy whatever text you need) Hit Shift button, then INSERT button on your keyboard.
FYI, it seems nowadays you don't have to setup a script to handle the poweroff!
Nowadays, all you need to do is setup a dtoverlay, by setting "dtoverlay=gpio-shutdown,gpio_pin=3
" in /boot/config.txt.

I tried adding a power button but that just caused my pi to shut down and wont turn back on. Stays on the red light... I guess I have to buy a new Raspeberry Pi 3 B+...
is it possible to change the pins around to trigger the script. currently i have a fan plugged into pins 4 and 6. or could i just solder the fan to 4 and 6 and the switch to 5 and 6?
Putty is a nightmare on a macbook and confusing. Has anyone managed to do this with a Mac?
How does the Linux unter Retropie flush data etc.? You just pull the plug, or does it boot down in the background?
[edit] Just saw, that you call a shutdown. Now I am asking my selfe, how does this corrupt a SD Card? AFAIK Retropie calls a shutdown, while klicking on the shutdown button in the menu [/edit]
What if GPIO 6 is already occupied, can you move it to another one and still use the same scripts that you provided?

ENABLE SSH
As of the November 2016 release, Raspbian has the SSH server disabled by default. It can be enabled manually from the desktop:
Launch Raspberry Pi Configuration from the Preferences menu>Navigate to the Interfaces tab>Select Enabled next to SSH>Click OK

Hi, I have a hifiberry dac attached to my pi and because of this I can't use pin 5 (GPIO3). GPIO2 and 18-21 also can't used. Can I use a different pin? and if so what changes do I need to do to the script?

Hello i just done all the steps on my raspberry 3b+ and every time I start it I just go through the start things and then shutdowns and now it don’t starts
so is there something i missed? only if i test the script (sudo python .../shutdown.py) does it function as intended until it boots back up.. then the script never loads for some reason.

Hey ETA. Looking for some help. I am trying to use Arcade 1UP with on/off switch. It was working yesterday and then when I went to do all my tie downs, reverse the orientation of the switch and clean up wiring, I can no longer get the switch to do anything. Using Wolfanoz 32 GB image. I did the programming steps in this video and nothing seems to work. The button no longer does anything. When I remove the pin connector from pins 5&6, the pi does shut off. When I replace the pin connector, the pi turns on. Any ideas?
