    I work alongside the United States Rural Utility Service, and from my understanding: Geothermal Energy can be used as a battery itself, though new renewables often implement batteries for "Peak Load Shedding" so a utility plant can be sized for the average power off-take, (more reasonably sized) as compared to being sized for the peak power, and then be required to run (most of the time) at a lower efficiency.

      I've never come across a battery station on geothermal in europe. That's seen as a measure for wind/solar with their intermittent output. But we do run denser grids on average, so perhaps it makes sense for lower density areas?

      @@happyflea Could be! BESS are becoming viable here in rural areas, and also geothermal plants themselves can be used to store energy. I can think of one cavern in the states used to store pressure. I believe it's intermittently heated to maintain pressure, so in some instances the geothermal energy is actually pumped back underground and the earth is used as a battery itself.

      @@Nwag63 That is really cool and interesting. I didn't know this was possible with geothermal. But I understand the concept as the country I lived in for 12 years had lots and lots of pumped-storage hydro power stations, so they are doing basically the same with water: If there is more power generated than used, they are basically pumping water from the lower basin to the top basin and if the demand gets higher, they can run it down through the turbines again - so basically the water itself is the battery by storing the energy as potential energy.

      ​@@happyflea Intermittent supply of power is not the only reason to have a battery. Intermittent demand is another possible reason.

    The 'Eldritch Wall' has become something of a minor landmark in the small community of Bend. Uniquely contoured to wrap around shoddy earthwork, the wall refracts light to warp reality and fill passersby with existential dread. Miraculously, it remains structurally sound.

    one thing you can do to help fill out the industrial space is to add low density offices. Often a lot of manufacturers will locate office spaces close to their factories for ease of communication and due to the cheap land. Such as engineering departments, sales teams, and often times accounting for the factory itself being in an adjacent building. This might help with filling out the space when dealing with the small industrial plots by making it feel more like a business complex rather than just one lone factory.

      A commercial building or two would also be realistic. With all those workers there, isolated from the rest of the town, there would be a very good market for a 7-11-type building and/or a Tim's/Dunkin' doughnuts for coffee/breakfast, and probably a Wendy's/Don's as well for lunch breaks.

      Where I'm from, Brazil, and even here in Europe, industrial areas have commercianl AND residential zones with it. It's never juts blocks of factories and industries. Workers from those places almost never live far away.

    Two things with rail: You want to minimise the number of points on the mainline (like connections on an arterial or highway) - lines from a yard would generally merge into each other, then have one merge into the mainline. The sections between points would have enough space for a locomotive (but not necessarily a full length train) to allow them to switch.
    You don't need a triangle at every location - trains can reverse. Particularly in a place like this, it would make sense for trains to enter the maintenance yard and then reverse rather than having a really tight curve onto the mainline.

      Or maps with more easy terrain. I get so annoyed by the weird shaped buildings and things happening on the maps... all i want at the moment is a flatmap and if i need some height I do it myself

      The elevation on one side is different from the other and you can't really tell until you start flattening things and it's a headache to make it all work. This is when the game is a little too real. @@dulikon6300

    I actually tuned this area into my town's own little grain belt. Full of farms and a small neighborhood tucked into the mountainside where the cargo terminal is here. I've found the signature industrial buildings look great and I think have the scale you're looking for in this area. They're also huge employers, so I've cleaned up a lot of my zoned industrial and made it more into support facilities for the big boys. Love the map! 🗺🏢

    Regarding trains and exports. They do work, but the bug is related how warehouse acts with local industries (it doesn't serve all of them) so you will see exports, but not before you got enough surplus in your city.
    Regarding track laying. 3 tips: Grade is never more than 2%, ideally not over 1.5%. Curve radius is never less than 250m on branches and on mainline never that tight, probably in game should aim for 500+m. Points / switches should be around 15 to 20 degrees. This is a slow switch, high speed ones are more like 5 degrees, but in game graphics start to bug out on those.

    I'm not a engineer, just a retired genX industrial carpenter, so what ive learned about geothermal plants is that the earth itself is now the boiler, eliminating the need for fossil fuels. However, the steam generated still powers the turbines that turn the generators. It's not all that likely, but if all the generators become inoperable at once, the batteries are there for back up, and hopefully the turbines can be brought back on line before the batteries discharge completely. Yes, there's a more technical explanation, but who wants to read a book after watching such a great vid!! Thanks for all you do

      More than likely there is a secondary tap off the main grid that is used to power the equipment used to start up the turbines after a maintenance cycle. An emergency battery system could be used for this as well and has the added benefit of operating during a grid outage.

      They may also use batteries to compensate for the changes in power usage throughout the day. So at night, when less power is being consumed, you'll being producing a surplus of power. If you store that surplus in batteries, then during the day at peak consumption the batteries can supplement any power demand beyond what is being produced

      It's weird they have geothermal gated behind the Emergency Batteries, and not Nuclear, because Nuclear needs both back up gens and emergency batteries to prevent a loss of reaction control during maintenance wind down or a sudden emergency (like a tsunami).

    What about relocating some of the other uses you put into the the initial industry are close to Bend such as the road maintenance depot etc… It would open up more land for residential expansion & also get some more of those bigger/chunkier assets into this industrial area ☺️👌🏻

    I downloaded your map. Having fun with it so far 😃. One thing that I like about it over other maps that I've tried downloading is that you didn't go overboard with the trees. The vast number of trees in other downloaded maps tank the framerate.

      @@57thorns yeah, obviously you want to have trees in the maps, but some other custom maps take that way too far and I get sub 30fps on a new map. On Phil's map, I get 70+ fps and that's with a small town so far.

      Truth be told, that's not an accident....the map you're playing on is v2 of Magnolia Bay. I saved the original partway through and forgot to save until after landscaping. It ended up crashing while saving because it had too many trees, some of which were outside of the playable area. I was starting to see significant frame dips, too.
      That experience made me think I better take it down a notch for FPS and stability... but I never know how it'll work for others. So thank you for letting me know!

    I love how you brought in real world examples of industrial sites to contextualize what you were doing in game. I’m new to the channel so I’m not sure if that’s something you do regularly, but I’ve never seen other popular CS TH-camrs do that. This is a series I’m definitely following!

    I find it looks rather realistic if one larger (6x6 eG) building is coupled with several smaller ones as they often Look like additional storage or factoring buildings. This complex could then be put in a larger square of alleys

      I was checking out some industry areas near me and I have to say that the 6x6 being the largest is accurate for about 99% of the buildings. Theres a couple of distribution centres for major retailers that are as big as CPP is saying but they're the outliers. Not sure about CS2 but in CS1 those bigger buildings are part of the Industries DLC.
      The other thing is that our industries areas have basically no foliage outside of maybe a hedge or garden out the front of an office or along an intersecting creek.

    The geothermal power plant has 22 employees, I would say three shifts of 4 for the 24/7 operation, and 10 more during office hours. 10 parking lots visible, a few service vehicles that might use those, or be hidden in the buildings. 10 parking spaces is a bit low, but 600-700 parking spaces? That seems to be overkill.

      Oh, you mentioned the number of employees.
      I think this is a scale factor, Magnolia county right now (19:21) has 1193 citizens. I suspect a more realistic number for the kind of developments you are doing would be 10000....
      The day when we can have a city build at true 1:1 scale will be interesting.

      Yeah... Phil did note that that was unrealistically low, and that ~120 employees would be more realistic... but he still put down vastly more parking than those realistic numbers support.

      @@Mg0936 120+ is realistic, but that would mean 120 more cars on the roads just for this plant.
      Numbers are way off in these games.
      Scales, sizes and distances as well. Buy what you get is something that almost, but not quite, looks like a bustling 500k residents town with just 10000 people in the sim, and only 1/10th of those even simulated.

    18:05 If you use the Medium Parking, the 2nd one from smallest to biggest, they aren't enclosed by the sides, and has entrance from all directions instead of just one. They are perfect to be put right next to each other since they can navigate through them.

    Warehouse retail is often in industrial parks---moving truck rental, furniture outlets, things of this kind. In addition to office, add some light commercial uses to give some variety.

    RE: “BAD AT TRAINS” Some things I think could be relevant to consider for realistic railways -
    Real railways want to maintain as close to a level grade as possible, so fluctuation should be minimal, or at least very spaced out.
    That being said, they tend to disrespect the topography to maintain level tracks.
    Curves and turnouts need be gradual. Tight radiuses are extremely unrealistic. I would bet the issues with the train station connections was because the turning radius was impossible at the in active tracks.
    Railways try to avoid “ground level” crossings (where the road literally crosses the rails, where cars would have to stop for a train) as much as possible. Rail fans love them however. Roads most often go under the tracks in cities where they can. The rail grade is usually at a mildly higher or lower elevation than road and pathways.
    Hope this helps! The CPR’s North Toronto subdivision here where I live is a pretty great example.
    Edit: I wrote this comment in response to a previous video and posted here because I was early and hoped it would get seen, but now watching the video, the rail yard looks fantastic!! Great job!! Love your work Phil!!

    10:03 The new cut and fill road walls look cool in the game, but people forget about one of the reasons why you don't see walls like that too often IRL. That solid concrete wall will bounce the road noise back, increasing the volume.
    Oh, and if you need a name for a blue collar neighborhood or industrial district in keeping with the floral theme of Magnolia County, I suggest Hyacinth Bucket (pronounced Bouquet). Though you should probably keep that away from the Rose and Daisy neighborhoods along anything named Onslow. Save the Violet name for a well-to-do neighborhood where there are swimming pools, saunas, and room for a pony. And if in the future you feel inclined to add in a gay bar, I suggest the neighborhood/district name Sheridan. It would go great next to a companion garment district named Tarquin.

    I love when districts have a name that makes some geographical sense. The industrial park being located in a hilly area right of the bay maybe something along the lines in Hillside Bay or Valley Bay could be fitting for the industrial park

    I love how the storyline also somehow describes the move from cs1 to cs2. It's a new project, not finished yet, and one person is all excited about the opportunity even with not much being there yet and the other one hates it all and wants to stay where he was before and has everything already! (DLCs)

    After just watching your first video in this series, I started a new Map with a vision, but went in with restraint. For once I did not do endless sprawl, and quick over-expansion and for the first time ever, I am at just over 10,000 population with all my happiness metrics met and exceeded along with a healthy revenue stream.

    Chalcocite Junction. Reason being: Its a rail yard with possible future connections and Chalcocite is one of the primary Copper ores in the Upper Peninsula (alongside native copper).

    Hey Phil! I have to queue in here with my emergency preparedness perspective. From my knowledge and experience with this, emergency battery stations are not a requirement of hydrothermal power plants. They do not facilitate the process of the production of energy at the plant itself. However, they can be hugely beneficial for a couple of reasons: 1) to stabilize the grid by provide auxiliary services (think peak usage times when the plant may not be able to keep up) and 2) to provide power to the grid in the event of an outage, plant repair downtime, or other emergency.     A nice way to cheese your city to have a realisitc industry is that you just place a bunch special industries, this way you can get access to the industrial signature buildings early, which are way bigger than the normal zonable ones, i think it would be pretty interesting seeing those in a big industrial site like magnolia county

    Something you can do to fix the weird shadows with cut and fill is turning off "terrain casts shadows." I generally think it looks better off anyway.

    One: my hometown has six chain restaurants, two auto shops, and a gas station all right next to each other on either side of a quarter-mile chunk of road. Two: on the other side of town from where I live, there is an on-grade railroad crossing on a 6-lane boulevard. Three: my town has a McDonald’s 7 miles outside of town with no other building at all for like 2 miles, and no other actual commercial stuff for like 6 miles.

    i really enjoy the industry system in cs2 so this build is appreciated 🏭, also i wonder if it would be a good idea to add some type of employee housing/low rent appartments on top of the hill near the cut & fill road by the rail yard for employees of the rail company in the story of jamila & james and the rail co.

    Again, I really like how you do the City Tour now. Much improvement. Something on my mind tho, is it intentional to have that many trees between the industrial buildings? It seems a lot, cause when it fully grows, the vibes might changed to feeling a bit too foresty/bushy.

      Agreed. My experiences of industry areas is actually a lack thereof trees. Although that could be something that new planners are addressing these days.

      @@jpob5 Fron what industrial places I see a drastic difference between old factories and new ones
      Old factories (anywhere from 30-60 yrs old) it’s often a concrete jungle, with smoke and badly paved roads
      But more recent factories, typically found in middle of nowhere by a highway, often don’t have the mass pollutions and are surrounded by trees and stuff

      I would just prefer they add a map editor. Given the... virility of the C:S modding community, you'll get a thousand custom maps almost immediately on a system that will also support modding. Whereas a semi-random generation system requires an entire, new game system to be built from the ground up when there's already a *lot* of work to be done

    The geothermal plant would seem to be the biggest and most unique feature of this industrial district, so maybe a name based on that would be appropriate? "Artificial Springs" is the best I've come up with.

    What you can do is try and make 12x12 squares from alleys that make a "solid" looking block of four 6x6 industrial buildings with parking across the alleys. This could give the look of a larger complex surrounded by parking.

    I was excited for Thanksgiving weekend to have 4 days off work because I purchased Cities Skylines 2 and started my first city more to get a feel of everything.

    Suggestion for the district name: Hot Spring Valley. The district sits on a geothermal node which is often linked with hotsprings on witch the power plants are build, hence the name, Hot Spring Valley. Love your videos, keep up the good work.

    Love the series man, just one point and not sure if it’s different in the US but I work for the railway in the UK and we wouldn’t typically build a rail depot onto an existing line in the way you have, we’d have it ‘branching off’ because otherwise trains have to slow down as they come through and it’s ultimately dangerous for the workers there and just makes things quite inefficient as you’re having to stop work to wait for trains to pass through etc.

    As a traffic/transportation engineer in the US. I recommend adding turn lanes (mainly left turns) for any roads intersecting your highway. It's a major safety concern having vehicles (especially heavy vehicles) slowing to turn or waiting to turn with high-speed traffic following up from behind.

    Hi Phil! As the rail connection is already established to this industrial area, the city could invest into it's first passenger station here. It could help people commuting from nearby settlements. This could help with the workforce shortage (I wonder if this is implemented in the game?).

    I had recently drove through Proctor MN on the way to visit the oldest at UMD and was almost giddy seeing both the old brick roundhouse in Proctor and CN's new modern roundhouse and yard. Then just following the line as it moved towards the ore docks in Duluth. I really recommend looking at the Google earth and maps views of the area for ideas.
