This game is so addictive. As a townplanner myself it's both great that the city grows organically and presents a challenge but also frustrating that I can't add some sanity to the layout.
yeah, the fact that theres no zoning rules is a pain in the ass. The only thing you really can do is try and lay out roads ahead of time, lets say if you wanted a gridded city for example. There are two problems with that, though: firstly, you usually don't get enough tiles, especially if you ever take motorways. Second, the game doesn't alert you when the playing area expands, so a house could come along and plant itself right where you needed a road to go, and from that point on there is nothing you can do about it. So you have to really watch the expansion closely.
You can, to a small degree, block malls from spawning in certain areas by filling a space or part of the space with roads. You can easily build 2 square roads in a space. Malls never remove roads
I was going to say: City Planner Plays and Real Civil Engineer need to do something together. It's really interesting too, seeing the difference in road designs between a brit and an american.
I feel like it ruins the game doing it like that. But I don't think the game is going off anything more than a puzzle in the first place. I just like it to look natural. Including adding those useless game ending stop lights.
@@itsyourenotyour9101 I am confused. You feel it ruins the game by applying logic to a puzzle game to survive longer and acheive a higher score? Is that not the point of playing a puzzle game
@@calvingreen1215 Not how they play it. I agree, I dislike watching and playing that way, the fun for me is making roads that flow traffic in cycles keeping things moving without segregation or an overreliance on motorways.

Same as you, I intended this game to build a city with lots of connectivity, so each house has access to a variety of amenities (color). Apparently, that's not the case, our residents here only go to work and return home, or they are so patriotic that they visit only one type of mall.
@@pedromartinez2347 dark theme would make everything better. Even ony phone I had to turn off auto brightness cause this barf of whiteness theme has bad contrast
The biggest problem I'm seeing is the development. You've got businesses and homes popping up in random places, one at a time. Without the ability to plat out full neighborhoods and districts, you're stuck with these weird roadways that are either underutilized or overcrowded.
You can place roads to stop things from spawning where you don't want them to. For example, if you don't want a large building somewhere make sure there is only room for a house to pop up in that area. It's difficult with the limited roads, but can be done to an extent, especially early on in the game.
I feel like that's what really makes the game a lot of fun, because it gets exponentially more difficult as time goes on. That's why so many people end up losing at around 1200-1400 trips on the first few maps, because by that point if you have a remotely bad road design you've already lost. (I feel like a really big thing to watch out for is having to change roads around when there's already a traffic jam, because even if the change you made would be good in the long term it could completely screw you over before traffic gets the chance to clear up again)
So, this was fun! I don‘t think I have ever heard you this stressed, you usually have such a calming effect on me… A technical info: the mouse arrow is really hard to see, so it was difficult to follow which „this“ you were talking about. Not much you can do about that, though.
This reminds me of trying to play with a much younger sibling; just as you start to be able to craft a narrative out of whatever random toys they've put down, they pull out the next box and start putting more toys everywhere. I love it! As a side note, I don't know what you could really do to fix it, but I find it a little difficult to track when you're talking about a specific area, because the cursor blends in so well to the largely light-colored game.
This gameplay is so aesthetically pleasing. Everything's connected and I love the colors interact. It feels much more alive! I get that the most efficient way is diagonals and by segregating roads by colors and/or making subdivided neighborhoods to avoid long and diverted travels; but that's just if you're grinding for scores. This layout is more fun and I enjoy it better than stressing out strategies to shorten travels and efficiently supplying the demand. It's calm, peaceful, and stress-free. It really gives you the "feels" of playing a game rather than participating in a competition. ❤️
Other small hints though. Use diagonal roads when possible. It saves road tiles as it lets you move on both the X and Y axis with just one tile. Buildings summon the closest available car by route and will take that route regardless of traffic.

4:04 you're redirecting that house to the right, but you should know that houses can have their driveways diagonal, so you could connect it down and to the left, forming a single light blue neighborhood connecting to a single point on the main road
I think the first domino to start toppling everything else was Dark Blue being unable to access their super building very easily. instead of connecting the two houses in the middle with the motorway, you probably would've had way less traffic if you connected to somewhere near the six dark blue houses to the north and left them off your artery and the connected roundabout entirely.
I can't believe it, you are cheating on Verde Beach with this where nothing can burn?? Nono Sir, that is not good. Ahh nice to see you trying this out as well, it is a fun game for sure

I find the one thing this game needs, is that wherever there is a T-section or a crossroad, having the ability to choose whether certain directions have priority, basically choosing a 4-way stop or a T section stop rather than all having to be either lights/roundabouts or nothing.

I keep loosing where you're pointing to, your mouse is so small it blends right in! Other than that I really enjoyed watching you try to make sense of mini motorways xD
one thing I learned. Cars will always slow down at a 4 way junctoin even if no other cars are there - but if it's only a 3 way, they will not slow down. So if you take a 4th road at a 4 way intersection and just move it over one tile, you'll have 2 3-ways, and no slow down.
I'm completely addicted to this game and I haven't even played it yet. The marketing for this game for sure is working. I asked for it for my birthday ;3
One of the things that always gets me is once buildings are upgraded to circles cars can't seem to get in and out of the three parking spots fast enought to satisfy the trip requirements. Hello there CPP! This was a really great surprise and I'm so happy about it. The artwork of this game looks so peaceful and makes me remember about the TV show "Bob the Builder". I appreciate that you tried this game.
☺️☺️☺️
I'm loving all the ppl playing this game it's so fun to watch and play
It was very impressive how despite the randomness you tried to form neat blocks and rows.
This is my first exposure to your channel/content, and I absolutely adore your speech and mannerisms!
I had to pause and reflect when he turned down the moterway
you can press keys 1 and 2 and 3 to adjust speed and pause
Thank you for this! You provided really interesting perspective on the game. Would happily watch more of this series!
On my 3rd year as a traffic engineer student and I find it funny I have the exact same problems with this game even if I'm nowhere near professional yet 🤣
I find it a bit too fast beyond 1000 people as I would like to plan things in peace (horrible deadlines with projects come to mind) but it's really addictive and makes you try out different ways of connecting people and still ends up in frustration right after you thought you had it figured out...
PS. Mini Metro (from the same dev) is also fun!
The buildings in Mini motorways are the gamer version of a Rorschach test. Some people call them factories, malls, offices. It's extremely minor, but it's very interesting.
I think that this should be a starting step into other city builder games for you. Can't stick to just Skylines forever, Phil!
Here i am thinking I’ll watch a relaxing CPP video before bed and now I’m very stressed!
Love then Cities Skylines playthroughs, content is awesome. Ever played Rimworld? Think you could make some great content for it! Keep up the great work man.
This is actually really helpful. I like playing these kinds of games, but I am not good at them at all. So, thanks!
Thank you so much for the little pop-ups with the music! It always annoys me hearing a song that I enjoy in a video and having no way to find it.
Pro tip : Always get the motorway, it’s basically 10 free road tiles + A road that goes everywhere without costing road tiles!
Watching you play this is therapeutic, hoping to see more. And don't be scared of branching out from Cities Skylines, you're entertaining enough to make up for it😊 why not even Twitch 😌
Did anyone else come here after watching Real Civil Engineers video on the same game? You both are great!
