Kyle Rayner has been through a lot since the early 1990s, so much so that it's easy to take for granted his guest appearances in other series. We're conditioned to believe that these appearances are just glorified cameos that only exist to sell more copies, and won't ultimately matter in the long run...something I've always believed, right up until reading the 2016 series "The Omega Men: The End is Here". This 12 issue run, this series that isn't even a Lantern book, gives Kyle Rayner some of the most powerful and meaningful character development in his entire history, and should be considered a must-read for his fans.

I really hate how they just toss him aside right now. Kyle was my favorite hero. He's relatable, as an artist and everything else. It's really sad that nowadays the writers don't know how to use him. He's not a white lantern, and He's not even an important lantern anymore. They really just toss everything about him aside. In the recent comics, while the others has their own story on surviving while the main battery exploded, Kyle is just in a coma or well last seen laying on a surgery table. He was once the greatest lantern, now he is just nobody because nowadays they don't know how to handle him. Even if they don't want to use him in recent comics, they could've had him still be a white lantern or omega lantern, somewhere in the universe, roaming through the universe, helping others, just like this omega men story.
Kyle Rayner is definitely one of my favorite Green Lanterns. I think it's shameful how he's treated these days.
I truly agree with that statement.
The best part of this series was the final panel for the book with the whole prison cell metaphor, incredibly thought provoking
For me, Kyle has had the most tragic and difficult career as a Lantern. Yeah, Omega Men was difficult but during Kyle's first year as a GL, he almost died fighting Mongul, his girlfriend was "fridged," he almost faced the end of the universe, and a former GL shot herself after trying to steal his ring while he was lost in space. There would be good moments but after this many of his future girlfriends would be killed, his mom would be killed because of him, one of his best friends would be turned into a villain while another would be brutally attacked, his neck would be sliced open while a symbol of fear would be burned onto him by his ex-girlfriend, he would die a few times, and he would see the destruction of planets and the near end of the universe multiple times. I love Kyle as a lantern and want to see more adventures with him but I wouldn't be surprised if he ever wanted to retire after all this tragedy.
They could take Kyle in some dirk directions if they wanted to. Interesting that they tend to portray him as the happy best friend Lantern whenever he's with the others.
@@MosaicComics That's the great thing about Kyle, he's gone through so much but he still finds the light to keep him going. Honestly, he's one of the heroes that needs sanctuary the most but he has such great friendships with other heroes and lanterns that he's able to grow as a person and still be happy as a lantern.
@@kenlsten4651 We do not need anymore heroes going through dark arcs and trauma. So sick of that mentality.
@@zemox2534 oh, my comment is not meant to support making characters dark but actually just meant to highlight the ridiculously dark career Kyle has had as a lantern. Ppl always mention Alex’s death but not the lantern suicide or the other heavy shit Kyle went thro as a rookie. But yeah, I don’t really like it being that dark. It’s already a lot for 1 girlfriend to die but more than half of them is just lazy and repetitive. Once in a while, it’s interesting to see something like omega men but otherwise, I prefer a more lighter tone or at least more balance between the tones and stories. It’s why I like the winick run which had it’s dark moments but a lot of bright ones as well
After all of that, he might be able to use all of the main rings, but it's clear that will power is his strongest emotion
Glad I stumbled across your channel. The Lanterns are a huge blind spot in my DC knowledge, glad to sit and learn, and make myself a little reading list.
The Omega Men is one of my favorite 12-issue release. If you haven't read the 12-issue run of "Ion" starring Kyle Rayner in the early 2000s, I also highly recommend that series. You get to see a lot of the vulnerability of Kyle as you do in this series. He has always been my favorite for his witty dialogue, his creativity in his constructs, but also the fact that he's the most emotionally sensitive lantern. He's been called the heart of the GL corps, whereas Hal is the inspiration, John is the leader, and Guy is the sheer adrenaline and willpower to punch through anything (he's the only guy that could fight Arkillo 1 on 1 without a ring and win, albeit barely).
With Kyle no longer a White Lantern and not showing up in any current series, I wonder when we will see him next. But a friend of mine spoke personally with Tom King who said he is currently working on a sequel series to The Omega Men. It might be a while before it gets through the pipeline, but it's very exciting news.
That's fantastic news about an Omega Men followup, I guess that means the hardcover sold well when it came out recently.
That Ion series is something I should revisit. I read it as it was coming out, and I remember going in with the wrong expectations...though the scene between Kyle and his mother definitely made an impression.
As for when we'll see Kyle next, I'm actually pretty hopeful for 2021. Both Far Sector and the Morrison book will be over in the first half of that year, Justice League Odyssey ends in October so Jessica is free...going into 2021, the only Lantern with a guaranteed spot in an ongoing book is John in Justice League, and that team could change at any time. Basically what I'm saying is, the Lantern books are going to get a massive shakeup by the middle of next year, and everyone is on the table.

That sounds great! I'm hoping that's the case! I haven't been a huge fan of the Morrison run. I think its different, unique, and I like they're trying something slightly different, but it feels like everything since the mid 2000s up until the end of "Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps" was a really good, cohesive plot thread, starting with Geoff Johns bringing back Hal and the gang in Rebirth. The GL series survived at least 2 reboots (New 52 and Rebirth) relatively unscathed because, I think, in part, the writing had been mostly solid already throughout and didn't really need rebooting. It did have quasi soft reboots with kicking Hal out the Corps, etc., at the beginning of New 52, but it wasn't just straight up rebooted like some series were, and none of the previous continuity was changed, really. I liked that.
But then the Morrison series came out and it was like they were going in a completely different direction, there was little to no connection to what came before it, etc. It felt very weird to me after following these series together for nearly two decades.

I'm still a bit salty that Kyle is no longer the White Lantern. It always felt like they struggled to find a place for Guy and Kyle, so it made him stick out without being the Green Lantern that they didn't know what to do with. I would have liked to see how he had struggles finding the balance with all 7 emotions like we got a glimpse of in The Omega Men. It's a really interesting weakness that would have been great to be explored further. Instead of running out of juice and needing a power battery, he has to be completely Zen or he could tear himself apart or lose his powers. I loved that idea.
@@daric_ Morrison's book isn't my thing either. I can respect what they're trying to do, Morrison is writing a brand new early Silver Age book, and that probably caters to a lot of older readers. But it's happening at the expense of everything else that's ever happened in a Green Lantern comic. I'm lucky I like Far Sector so much, so I still have one Lantern book coming out that I really look forward to, but that won't be for everybody either.
@@daric_ I'd really love them to follow up on that small White Lantern Corps that Kyle started at the end of New Guardians. It would be the perfect way to clearly define what a White Lantern is and can do, and maybe that could give Kyle some direction as well. Although if I'm being honest, I think the best way to make Kyle stand out as unique would be to let him get back to his roots. Let him operate on Earth, live in New York, be the local everyman hero again.
I love green lantern. I don't know why DC doesn't push this i.p. more. It could be massive. I could see movies and am animated series adapting the Johns run. Hal is my favorite lantern. But the Ron Marz run deserves an Omnibus collection.
Hopefully it picks up once the HBO Max tv series is finally ready to go. There's one season of a GL Animated Series out there if you haven't seen it already that incorporates a lot of the Johns era stuff, and it's a great show.
@@MosaicComics yes! I have seen it. I just want more. Green lantern tends to make very loyal followers. As a big DC fan in general , one complaint I would make it's that they don't collect more green lantern material. The Marz and Winnick runs are very good. Vendetti had a great Hal Jordan run as well. I just think DC could do more with it. It's unfortunate that movie didn't work out , as I believe that is what caused DC to focus less on this property. I believe you are right though . The show could bring it all the way back
@@derekgreen7319 Yeah...they have been collecting the entire Ron Marz Kyle Rayner series, but it took them a couple decades to finally get around to it. It's easy to look at the massive push other franchises get and feel like Green Lantern is being ignored, but I honestly feel the quality of the material is stronger right now than it's been in a long time, and there's a lot more of it than many people realize.
@@MosaicComics you have a point hopefully DC will continue the green lantern Kyle Rayner trade paper back series.
This could be a great movie
Wow Tom King actually wrote a good book wat a surprise
I see they corrected Kyle giving over his ring. Originally it was a green lantern ring and that confused the hell out of me.
Where are these clips from. The deluxe edition?
@@TheEliasNoel Yeah, I noticed the collections changed that part too. It was so confusing and annoying in the actual issues.
"Makes him a more tragic character, but it also makes him a stronger one." To be honest, I'm tired of that. These days, almost all Superheroes are written as or turn into tragic characters. Its why I like Invincible. It has tragic moments, an very truamatic ones, but I'd never say that Invinvible himself is a tragic character. And I like that. I like stories that, for a change, you have a character struggle and grow without becoming just another tragic character.
i would disagree with the idea that tragic means the same thing to everyone. so what you find tragic, wouldn't be what someone else might find tragic.
Damn I’m surprised you don’t get more views
Colour me impressed, these three videos taught me more about green lanterns than I've known for ages. Any videos on John stewart planned?
Absolutely, he's been one of my favorites for a long time. This channel is even named after his old solo series, Green Lantern Mosaic. I might focus on Alan Scott first, since it's his 80th anniversary this year, but John will definitely be getting a lot of attention.
@@MosaicComics nice when I'm glad i found your channel and look forward to whatever you do next
Also phenomenal video my friend This is by far my favorite Green Lantern book and my favorite story of Kyle which I personally relate very much to thank you for doing such a great job summarizing the book and for getting into the deeper missiles and meaning of it I only wish that they were more books like this that you could analyze
Thank you very much. I'd love Tom King to come back and take a second crack at this group, or at least continue on with Kyle in some capacity. As far as I'm concerned, what happened in the Omega Men should be absolutely essential to Kyle's characterization going forward, though that's probably not going to happen. I know it's not the same, but Tom King's current Strange Adventures book scratches a similar itch, and Far Sector is very good about using Green Lantern to explore the complexities of deeply personal, societal issues...and I will be talking a lot about that one, once it finishes later this year.
I'm not the biggest fan of Tom King but his Omega Men was fantastic. I hope you read Kyle's other stories tho, Judd Winick, Pete J Tomasi, Tony Bedard and obviously his creator Ron Marz have done a great job developing and giving him great pathos but Omega Men is definitely essential.
@@MosaicComics I'm not the biggest fan of Tom King (he doesn't understand or respect a lot of characters like Wally West and Mr. Terrific) but Omega Men was fantastic (definitely the best Kyle book in years). I have actually seen a lot of Kyle fans reject Omega Men for misinterpreting and mischaracterizing Kyle but do you agree? The biggest retcons I could see was Kyle speaking/praying in Spanish which I didn't mind since I imagine Kyle learned the language from growing up in California and/or maybe by meeting his grandparents from his father's side but since it's such a dyer situation and Kyle almost died many times, I can also imagine him praying to survive and appreciating his religion more. It was funny tho reading an old Christmas special where Kyle learns to appreciate miracles and religion.
@@kenlsten4651 I was reading Kyle's 1990s series as it came out, he's the first Green Lantern I ever followed that way instead of reading back issues later. There's some great stuff in there, and it'll definitely come up more later.
@@kenlsten4651 I have read a lot of the Kyle and don’t love how passive they’ve made him lately. I haven’t read much of his original adventures so I’m looking forward to reading those 90s issues.
I’m a green lantern fan
It's too bad King's "Omega Men" was titled "Omega Men" as your analysis shows it could have been called "Green Lantern: Kyle Rayner" and maybe the work done on his character there might've carried on past that series. (then again, it's not like Morrison's "The Green Lantern" has really affected how current writers depict Hal Jordan)
you I never cared about the omega men before this series. it's a shame tom king has so fallen far from grace
Citadel sounds like Democrats
