    My 2010 STR has no ABS, no traction control, no wheelie control, no IMU, and no rider modes. How have I survived on this thing for 60,000 kms? And I just turned 70 years old. My first ride on a Triumph was on a 1950s Thunderbird way back in the 60s. The new Trident is a return to sanity for street riding; who needs 200 hp and mega-complication if you don't ride on a racetrack? 80-100 hp in a 400 lb motorcycle is brutally fast on public roads and I rarely get to use that last 20% of my bike's powerband without risking death or a judge's wrath. Btw the Trident is a really good-looking bike too; hats off to the styling dept.

      I was going to say the same thing. I had a rant about ‘Neevesy’ myself a few months back and this was a far more modern approach and less of the loutish ‘Men & Motors’ style of bravado and presenting style that should have stayed in the 90s, but somehow, in the world of motorcycling, got carried over for far too long. The absolute best thing was that he was referred to as ‘Michael Neeves’...just a shame that the (likely young and/or sucking up) ‘tech guy’ that uploaded to TH-cam used the god awful ‘Neevsey’ moniker in the title (we’re not your old mate from down the track...I want to take you seriously as a motorcycling journalist and reviewer). Still, we’re getting closer to something resembling professionalism and what the viewers and MCN subscribers want.

    Apart from the affordablity, the looks of this bike is what attracts me.
    The way the muffler blends in the chassis and doesn't block the view of the rear tire is awesome.

      exhaust is styled to cover a massive 30 pound black box emissions underneath thats more than a hand thick and goes all the way across the bottom. at this point all is lost, and Im looking at u EU with the ridiculous emission regs now. sure u can get a whole new cat delete system. for now. IC engine will be a memory soon enough. were frogs being boiled slowly but it wont be long now. as for the engine triumph neutered that at the camshaft. I test rode this, power curve drops off like u fell off a cliff. its made more torquey, made to sound good, and look good, but its a gutless wonder above 100. gets there pretty quick an with a good sound, but thats about it, take 10 miles or more to get to 120 which probably its top speed. if yur lucky. and the nannys cut in all the time way too much for me, do u like the throttle cut mid corner, and brakes applied? I dont. i wouldnt buy anything newer than say 2015 nowadays. or get a scooter be more thrilling than this. sad.

    I rented a Tiger for a week in California. I was gobsmacked ( I’d owned many bikes, but never owned a Triumph) at how smooth the triple motor was and how stable it was in the corners.

      I do not think that I would be to confident about changing the oil on a triumph ever 10,000 miles!

      They invite them all and given them a presentation on the bike. Then the reviewers just regurgitate what they were told - even if they don't realise it. Its like someone asks you a leading question, they say do you like this type of cheese? I personally think its really great because of its creamy texture and how it melts in your mouth. Then when you go talk about said cheese to someone else, you will inevitably describe it in those same qualities without realising that these ideas were fed to you subconsciously. It takes someone who is really aware of the phycological tricks that companies employ to understand what's happening and form their own thoughts.

      @@Keka-vg3ut that's a lot of miles for a bike a year. Chains sprockets tyres brakes etc are going to be more of a concern than services. And motorcycles are rubbish on fuel my ford transit diesel connect 1.5 econetic gets 63mpg. Bet even the bike struggles to get that!

    When I was a kid I used to like my neighbor’s Honda NTV 650 Revere, it was in the early 90’s. This new Triumph kinda sends me that vibe, a good all rounder, urban midsize commuter bike. Nothing special, but good enough to manage your daily chores in style.

    I think it's difficult to argue that Triumph wins the fit and finish game. They have figured out how to mold metal and abs together like fine art, hide cables and hoses (try and find one with the naked eye standing back looking at their bikes) and really just produce a bike that at any price point, you'd be proud to own. Seeing the unveiling of the brand new Speed Triple RS, it's obvious Triumph is out to dominate the market. I would drop the $18,500+ for the newly redesigned Speed Triple before I'd give a penny to any of the Ducati naked's lines. I own a Tuono and I'll admit the most manufacturers in this space have rested on their laurels with their heritage models and not really changed much. Triumph is out there innovating and re-tooling for battle. Well done Triumph.

      I just can’t get past the street triple headlights. I hate them. I want the bike but know I’m gonna be hating those lights every time I look at them.

    I'll tell you what I would like to see - middle weight motorcycles with shaft drive! The only offering right now is the Motto Guzzi V7. I'm not asking for DCT or any of that. Just a simple shaft drive on a great bike. Last one I had and loved was my 1982 Yamaha Seca 650 Turbo.
    While everyone is now in the retro and mid-sized mindset/buying frenzy, I think there all missing out on a huge market share of riders with my mindset. I don't want ride modes, ABS, traction control... I want a shaft driven motorcycle in the mid-sized class UJM, or sport touring style of bike. Is that too much to ask?

    Great real world applicable review. Nice bike! Never owned a Triumph and this would be a good start/finish. I do, as a past Hawaii based FZ-07 owner, hope this gets Yamaha off their butts on a real MT-07 update.

    People keep calling bikes like this beginner bikes... but they have more than enough power for experienced people...
    Its strange. In the car world you don't say a 320i is a "beginners car" just because it has a 2l instead of the 3l straight 6.
    I have a ninja 1k but still keep my sv 650 for kicking about town and commuting and its a blast to ride!

      It's beginner friendly is what most reviewers are saying. I bought a Triumph Trident and I've been riding for 36 years it's a great all rounder in my opinion.

      @@ChrisWolf75 Yeah I'd consider one myself tbh. Light middleweight bikes are some of the most fun you can have on 2 wheels.
      Sure ripping the throttle on a litre bike is intense and fun... but it can be frustrating when you can't. Being able to rag a 650cc bike for all its worth and chuck it about with confidence is just as much, if not more fun!

    with this Triumph Trident 660 and Aprilia RS 660 like new bikes there, i dont know if people who rides casually, need bigger bikes. I think the market for powerful litre class bikes is going to be very down in coming years.

      The main reason I'd buy a bigger engined bike is to get a bigger frame. If I wanted a sports bike I would buy a litre one purely because I find all the outright sports 600s too small. If I wanted an ADV/Touring/ST type bike, the only reason I'd get a 1200-ish cc big model is if I was 2 up touring, the extra power and longer wheelbase is worth having for 2 people + kit. Riding 1 up, an 800 model is better. Being smaller and lighter is a big plus and the power is plenty.

      What extras did you order? I did the same-pillion grab handle, little mini windscreen, and best of all, the quickshifter. Picking it up next Friday

    Triples are great engines. Very similar to V4 with torque and high revving but with a little more character. Not too smooth. Triple way easier to work on vs a V4

    "Honest review"? Well it must be good, it makes Triumph sound as if they can walk on water. For my part in buying anything I always wait until it been out for over a year. I let time be an honest judge, some reviews make me wonder if "someone is getting a drink out of it"?

      Do not expect an "honest" review from Brits, even if they try not to be biased (some do), most of them are in the manufacturer's pocket. Bad review = lack of invitation for next "event", and that equal no money and slow YT channel death. Unless of course, they can offer some other content, but most don't.

    I hate the way pretty much every motor journalist equates experience with big cc motorcycles and speed.
    I've had all the large CCs motorcycles , if anything experience has taught me that small cc motorcycles are more fun and speed is usually best left at the racetrack.

    Best review on this bike I've watched so far. I gave up riding after I sold my Triumph TT600 in 2005. This motorcycle is drawing me back to riding. Thanks for the detail in the review.

      The last of the "reviews" done by the Triumph Ambassadors (or whatever they call the select few that got invited to vacation in Spain). I am waiting for the first of the critical reviews, with comparisons between the Trident and the Japanese competition. From the guys that Triumph no longer invites to these press junkets. Does Triumph management not realize that we are well aware of how their product rollouts are orchestrated?

    I don't need this bike (have an older, perfectly good Street Triple). But strangely, I want this bike! A slightly comfier, slightly mellower Street Trip is kind of exactly what I want. Must be getting old...

      Very late reply on my part, but definitely agree. I'm too young to have ridden back then but almost reminds me of what the original Monster represented when it came out, too-a sporty but still friendly roadster based on a sportbike engine. A true "everyday" sporty bike.

      The 1160 is rumored to have upward of 185hp and 95ftlb of torque. I've been all over any little nugget of news about the thing. It was supposed to be officially launched at EICMA. But hey, covid lol

      I have a 2020 Speed Triple RS, it has enough power for me, but some people do seem to want more !
      Only things I'd change on my one, is a single round headlight like the Trident here, a larger fuel tank and scrap keyless ignition. Otherwise it is perfect for me.

I have to admit the twin headlights on the Speed Triple do give a better spread of light as compared to my Speed Twin, I just prefer the look of a single round headlight . i.e. I seem to prefer form over function . Maybe I should stop complaining about my Speed Triple's lights !

    Wonder how the steel frame and swing arm will stand up to a few British winters! I've seen some serious rust on some MT-07's swing arms,also seen some really poor welds.
    Let's hope Triumph have not skimped on materials and finish in these areas.
    This bike would be the perfect do it all bike for the one bike rider.

    I am an experienced rider, and I'm considering this bike. The price is attractive, as is the handling that pretty much all reviewers have praised. This would be my primary motorcycle. Do you see this bike as adverse to putting bags on for everyday use, plainly being useful as a grocery getter, as well as not being unsufferable for occasional solo touring?

    You should always change your oil every year even if you don't ride since water can get in the engine just from the moisture in the air. Nothing to be too concerned about but oil is also hydroscopic and should be drained yearly at least.

    I just test rode the Triumph Street Tripple RS yesterday. I really loved it. unlike the MT09 that has a front wheel that never feels planted. the RS felt really good. just what I like in a bike. the only thing I wish is that it had an upper fairing, because at higher speeds the wind was hammering me. but I would still like to own one. the only problem is where I live the price is really crazy, in America money it would be around $16.000 dollars, and the new Trident will be around $10.000. but it's the same thing with other brands. the Z650 and Mt07 are also around 10 grand. but I am going to keep my eye out for a used RS. I also test road a Speed Twin and really liked that also. its a great around town bike with lots of torque. and didn't feel heavy at all. and I like that 1200 twin sound. Triumph is really making some nice bikes. they still have their classic style Bonneville but they also have the modern bikes with the modern tec.

    You can get a brand new suzuki Gsxs750 for the same price. 113 bhp compared to 80 of the trident I don't understand why people overlook that bike

      I was looking at one. I think the lack of any updates hurts the GSXS in 2021. They just keep repainting it

    Just got my 2023. Love it. Few recommendations - gear ratio is too low end. Shouldnt be running 50 mph at 3500 rpm in 6th gear, maybe a 750 cc motor, wheelbase 2" longer.

    Every comparo has missed the SV650 out as direct competition. Except John Hogan at Bike World. He even said he'd remove the MT07 and replace it with the XSR700, similar customer demographic etc, round bits etc. I agree.
    Both the above will be imo more fun and unique.

      Yeah, I keep wondering why the SV650 does not seem to get mentioned. It is even cheaper than the Z650, and it is a naked middle weight.

    I'd like to know how the running costs compared to the big 4 Japanese competitors. 10k service intervals are great but will make no difference if it's 10k/12 months 😏

      In the south east UK at least, Triumph dealers are notorious for astronomical servicing costs, so even if intervals are longer, costs over the bike's lifetime could still be the same or higher.

    The Street Triple S has the 765 engine, not the 660 engine.
    Edit: my bad... US STriple S and UK STriple S are different spec.

      Current Street Triple S has a 660 engine, I think A2 restricted from the factory. Obviously it can be derestricted to 94bhp. They dropped the 765 capacity Triple S in the last year or so.
      They did used to do 2 different street triple S models, the 765 and the 660. Now it is down to just the 660cc.

      I think the confusion here is country-specific... I'm in the States, where there is no power-restricted licensing, so we never got the 660cc version.

    someone on Reddit said the 12k service on their triumph triple should cost between $900-$1200. Is that what I should expect on this bike as well? That’s insane to me. Makes me reconsider the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650. I can’t imagine that bike needing technical know how to service.

    Great review, thanks. I didn’t hear you compare against the Suzuki SV650, any reason why? Would you not put that in a similar group to the MT07, z650, CB650R etc? I’m asking because I’ve got my eye on the SV as my first bike. I prefer the more classic round headlight styling to the other Japanese bikes but the Trumph looks and sound great too. I understand there’s better equipment in the Triumph but just not sure I want to fork out another £2k.

    The service intervals are misleading unless you do a lot of miles each year. 10,000 mile service intervals sounds good but if you only do about 3,000 - 4,000 miles per year then you still need to get it serviced yearly. It would benefit me because i had a street triple with 6,000 mile intervals and i averaged about 9,000 miles per year so it was getting serviced well before the year was up so 10,000 mile intervals would have benefitted me

    Hi Neevesy, some months after seeing tbis I ordered one. The Triumph dealership advised me not to get the Bluetooth connection as it is too distracting/ dangerous. Otherwise i just opted for a tail tidy from Evotech

    Nice review. But I’m very curious about Voge. The high end Chinese motorcycle. Cheap but very beautiful and equipped nice. The 500r very slick looking bike and the 650ds is a competitor to the Suzuki v strom 650. It looks better than the Suzuki and better priced. Can’t wait to see you guys review these bikes.

    Can we get the Trident without the Union Jack on the tank? A plain red tank would look better. Will the gearbox fail like the water-cooled Bonnevilles? Extended service intervals are nice but if the bike needs a new gearbox 3 or 4 years in, that's an expensive maintenance item. How long will it be before some third party like Motone comes out with a kit to eliminate that silly half rear fender and replace it with a nice looking tail tidy? That rear fender is a deal breaker for me.
