      Fr i played the hell out of Crashday. I love the original version so much and still own my physical copy. I remember as a kid I would always have trouble with the final battle which was against that black skyline and it took me hours until I finally figured out how to beat it on my own. There was also this one stunt map I was addicted to and it had ramps after ramps after ramps you could chain some serious combos.. also ate lots of toast with apricot jam while playing this game so whenever I eat that I get reminded of crashday :')

    You're one of the few people who actually fairly and effortfully reviewed this game, which can be hugely appreciated (and I know it is by a good few members of the community.)
    Usually journalist write the game off because of it's handling or other common features the popular racing games obviously do best because of a more powerful studio, but actually looking at the smaller features and how they are better, truly a nice cause.
    As one of the few modders of the game, the small spotlight you gave it here I personally very much appreciate, as I put exceptional effort into my mods so people can truly enjoy it, and if it could reach more people because of this, hats off to you. Same goes for the organized multiplayer sessions hosted sometimes, the number of events really slowed down lately, but more people could be much more motivating to actually host them.

    Hey, I just got made aware of this review and I wanted to thank you.
    Honestly, you have no idea how much I appreciate this review. As someone who has been playing this game since 2006, and has spent many hundreds of hours on keeping this game alive and (amazingly) thriving, it is honestly so heartwarming to finally get a good, honest, unbiased review of this game; a game that's become my love child. Not only is this a justice I think the game deserves, but I also now have something solid that I can pass around when people ask about the game I'm so devoted to. Thank you for that.
    The reviews for the original 2006 release were mostly full of misleading information or even lies, with some giving excessively low scores as a result. I really appreciate that you came to check out the game properly, and in turn gave it a proper review. This is something that deep inside, I have wished for for many years now.
    There are a few things that are slightly incorrect/misleading in the video, but they're pretty minor, so I'll gladly let that pass. After all, you've spent a lot of effort on this and the result shows it.
    Just to clear up some confusion though (as many people have been confused about this before), at the beginning of the video you said Replay Studios is the studio behind Crashday, but the people that built Crashday from the ground up were Robert Clemens and Jan Bodenstein, who ended up founding Moonbyte. Replay Studios came in later to help finish up the game and host the multiplayer server for it, which is why the server disappeared when Replay went under, despite Moonbyte still being around, and being the company that brought us the Redline Edition.
    EDIT: Oh and in case any fans or newcomers to this game read this and aren't aware: We host events most Friday evenings (EU time). If you're curious about multiplayer, modding or the game in general, feel free to say hi to us on Discord. We're always happy to see new people join! Just search/google for the official Crashday discord server and let us know how/why you ended up there!

    I truly miss racing/driving games like this. The amount of variety we had from the 90s to the 2000s was phenomenal. If people don’t understand why we go into a nostalgic mode about old games, it’s because games were just better back then. They weren’t corrupted, filled with a bunch of quick money making schemes, incomplete releases, and copy and paste titles.

    • @mcgeufer
      @mcgeufer ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I disagree, it was just not as easy to complain about it online.
      Like all, the Bethesda games have always been buggy as hell. Even on consoles like the SNES, there have been games so messed up it was not even possible to finish them.
      Even worse, on consoles, there was no way to deliver patches.
      Sure in average the AAA games had a higher quality back in time, they also have been way simpler.
      And even in the 90is we had already games that have just been re-skins from the former title. Like X-Com 1/2.
      I do agree that there have been fewer things like "quick money making schemes". However, some may argue that all the games have been just that back in time. Since the production cost was just a tiny fraction of what we have now, and they did cost about the same in the store.
      And if you look at those few companies that made really great games and had good morals, well, they have been bought by big companies or went bankrupt.
      So, that's that.

    • @TheCapitalWanderer
      @TheCapitalWanderer 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      one could argue GT3 and GT4 is just a reskin, Most Wanted and Carbon is a reskin and an asset reuse, not only that, but there were equally terrible games that were back then as it is now. just because they go unnoticed does not mean they dont exist.

    • @syahmiirfan6779
      @syahmiirfan6779 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@TheCapitalWandererWhile I don't disagree with the sentiment, Gran Turismo 3 is definitely not a reskin of Gran Turismo 2. You could already tell just by looking at the visuals of the game.
      Plus, I still wouldn't really say that Gran Turismo 4 is a reskin of Gran Turismo 3 either, since a lot of newer game features as well as physics overhaul is on Gran Turismo 4.

    • @TheCapitalWanderer
      @TheCapitalWanderer 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@syahmiirfan6779 fair enough, ill admit i got the GT Part wrong, i did take what roflwaffle said and just put it in my comment. i still stand on the other things i said though. it's disheartening to see people discredit all of Unbound's positive changes just because it looks like Heat, and those very same people that discredited Unbound conpletely ignore the fact that MW05 and Carbon had a lot of assets reuse and literal copypaste mechanic.

    • @syahmiirfan6779
      @syahmiirfan6779 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@TheCapitalWanderer Yeah, I understand that. Unbound does seem to be pretty decent in terms of game modes, though the racing mechanic is still not for me (the tap to drift feature in the other NFS game I played by Criterion, that is Hot Pursuit Remastered left a pretty bad taste on my mouth honestly), but I agree that it still doesn't deserve the hate that it got.
      Most of us really just want a competently designed game, because so many of the current ones just don't have that. With that being said, that sentiment unfortunately got corrupted to the point of cynicism, and people just can't see what's good in the newer games anymore.

    I am from Italy, got the original game with a magazine a year after the release, I vividly remember as a barrel of fun with a very energetic soundtrack, I even tried multiplayer back then and found several servers online, most of them had players from eastern europe whom were very friendly
    Now about the region, I had to specify this because the publisher took an extra step into the game localization, the voiceover you hear before the missions was redubbed by a somewhat famous italian radio host, it made the game even more cool, listening at that hothead describing the game modes and progression, and most important it's a memento on how games can be improved with a good localization, a small team managed to do that, developers that runs millions of sales cant afford to even translate their games, this is a giant middle finger to the likes of bioware and their andromeda, and as them many others

    The only thing left for you to discover is our Cops'n'Robbers sessions, great memes await you there :v
    Ok, on a more serious topic, unfortunately the developers have pretty much pulled the plug on updates, since most of the latest ones weren't due at all, and were done out of passion for the game. But passion itself won't pay bills, and as further projects and the need to take care for your family and friends means no more free time to work on CD, it's understandable that updates have come to a halt. The best thing we can do is still enjoy it for what it is as long as the servers are kept on.
    Perhaps this video will reach some people and convince them to take this game for a spin. The handling at first is easily off-putting for many, but with friends it's gonna be worth it in the end.

    • @HazewinDog
      @HazewinDog ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've said it before, but the way I see it, the handling is both a blessing and a curse.
      It's a curse in the sense that new players struggle to get to grip with the game's handling model initially, and may give up before they do.
      But it's a blessing as well, since it is a fairly in-depth handling model that blends arcade with realism in a way that makes it so you never fully master the handling, keeping the driving in this game from getting stale. At least, that's how it's worked for me, and it's part of why I still love this game so much today :)
      I'd be happy to help out any newcomers that could use it (and I know you do too :P)

    The game had a pretty dedicated playerbase in the first few years and even after server shutdown there were a couple enthusiasts who were hosting the servers for everyone else to play. Modding and track making was also pretty huge at the time so, while niche, the game still had its place even with all the other bangers released in the same year. Personally spent probably over 1000 hours playing it when i was a kid.

    I agree
    Back when I was young and had nothing to play on my PC
    We picked up Crashday in a local CD Store selling games and lots more.
    It was a blast back when it was a thing and it threw me out of the window as to how much fun it was.
    I thought ill never see Crashday ever again,but seen it back on steam and people holding it on,its fun.
    I really wish I can play more of it,but real life is cutting my time short each day.
    Crashday will forever remain in my heart and perhaps someday ill start it up again on steam and mod it to oblivion.

    This game literally is my childhood. I got it as a like 4-5 year old kid from some gaming newspaper my mom bought me for around 10 polishc złoty (~2$), then played it constantly for years. When I started, I didnt even understand how to progress in career so I was just building tracks and kept playing using stuff that was unlocked by the default. Once I grew up I discovered the career mode and realized I can get all the cars and all the tracks my opponents were using and it was like a step into a new world lmao This game, Colin McRae 2.0 and Test Drive Unlimited have the most special place in my heart when it comes to racing games and theres infinite nostalgia attached to them. I bought the remastered version on steam recently and was extremely happy that this game aged so well, it still looks decent, soundtrack is amazing and the overall gameplay is extremely fun even for todays standard

    I had the original Crashday on PC and my main memories of it were:
    - Great theme music.
    - Pretty fun demolition derby mode.
    - Building crazy custom maps. in the track editor only to have the game crash when trying to load into them.

    If you wanted to ask kind of racing game, we actually have one in 1995 and that is Destruction Derby series
    That game was being famous of how car damage works and what happened when parts broken will affect your handling. Try that game because it has 3 different games : Derby 1, Derby 2 and Derby Raw.
    Derby Raw by far is most fun because it will wreck you out really fast if you dont careful with your car and it has lots of cars from standard one into Pickup, Police Car and Trucks. Oh, you can tune your cars by using your hard earned money for Handling, Speed, Durability and Acceleration. Also, beware with your car because each time you finished the race, you will need to repair it or else you will have trouble on next race.

    Crashday is a game with so many memories to it for me since my original copy back in 06, I really wish this game took off because it has so much going for it but not enough players to properly support it. Still I am happy to see someone give this game a proper spotlight and go over it in good detail as it's a fun game I comeback to often.

    I played the original Crashday a lot and it was very fun! I never knew it was dead, as it was decently popular here, but in those years people in my country pirated everything.
    But I don't remember playing online - perhaps the cracked version was broken online or it was already dead by then, I don't remember.
    I've had an obsession with destructible cars in games ever since the old Destruction Derby on my neighbor's Pentium we played as kids...
    There's another obscure game I love and you should check: Demolition Racer
    Also people praise Trail Out for being the spiritual Flatout successor, but I haven't played it yet.

Last time i played crash day multiplayer it has confusing enough lobby/browser system despite theres only less than 5 lobbies. It was like 6 years ago when i played crashday multiplayer. And the last lobby i could join only had TWO opposing drivers. With netcode like u said. Desync everywhere. But, physics and hardware playability wise, this game has huge potential

    As someone who lived through those times, Crashday was the famoust "stuck in development hell"/suspected vaporware before Duke Nukem Forever. It was originally a one-man project started in 1997, with the studio being founded 1998/1999 and was first made known to the general public in a trailer from 2001. It was pitched as a spiritual successor to the famous DOS game Stunts (some may remember it as 4D Sports Driving) which was a commerical success (similar to Prince of Persia) and had great cultural impact (Trackmania comes to mind). The twist was that it would offer "the most realistic collision physics ever". Back then, publishers expected even AAA game titles to be done in 1 max 2 years, so when the game development dragged on for 9 years (!) it became a hot potato until it landed with Atari. I wish someone did a serious deep dive about this game, interview the devs. It'd be amazing to hear the story. I remember back then before the game was released people would say that it's in development hell because making realistic crashes is hard, either that or that the computers of the time couldn't handle the collision physics "realism".
    The collision physics weren't "impressive at the time", every review derided the game for promising realistic collision physics and delivering a system which looked a lot like NFS:HS without any of the fun

    I actually knew about Crashday and even played it (and not coming from Russia). My friend had it on its computer, so whenever I visited him, we had a blast playing that game.
    I enjoy the Steam version as much as I enjoyed the original version back in 2009... probably because I was 8, I enjoyed vehicular combad and racing games overall and just loved crashing cars in video games. The game is really worth a try, even its workshop.
    I'm glad you showed and reviewed my childhood game, I hope more players will try it.

    The original Stuntman game from 2002 and Stuntman: Ignition from 2007 could also deserve some honorable mentions, as they also have similar arcade-like derby physics as Crashday, FlatOut, Carmageddon, Wreckfest etc. - their developers also went bankrupt in the late 2000's and have left a huge mark in the Arcade Racing community.
    Edit: Ignition's Multiclash/Stunt Constructor leaderboards/servers are still up, but they are plagued by cheaters & you'll end up being alone most of the time, so good luck trying to bring a friend in. The 2002 game is pretty much dead and you'll require PCSX2 to still play it, although it's extremely buggy.

Simplistic but fun and has a good amount of content counting with mods. It forever goes in my personal Hall of Fame for me in the racing genre.
