Imagine Niko from GTA IV and Savo from Midnight Club 2 talking trash to each other while racing. Or CJ from GTA San Andreas and Savo from Midnight Club 2 talking trash while racing each other.
Open world games almost always feature arcade-y handling models because usually those games allow players to use weapons while driving so the handling models usually don't have a lot of depth to them to prevent frustration (imagine trying to shoot a gun and reload while also having to manually shift gears and manage weight transfer and understeer/oversteer while the car itself gets damaged by AI opponents). The only games that are the exception (that I experienced) are the first 2 Mafia games. Fun fact: the first Mafia game was originally supposed to be a driving game similar to the Driver games which is why the game has such a realistic handling model (you can play the PC version with a force feedback wheel and pedal setup) and damage model (it features real time vehicle deformation while other games during the same time period used pre-made damage models). The 2nd Mafia game features 2 driving modes: a Normal driving mode which is the default setting as it's the easiest and the best suited for firing guns while driving, and a Simulation mode which is the more in-depth handling model for when players want a more realistic and challenging driving experience. I wish more games adopted Mafia 2's approach to driving with a simpler handling model as a default setting and a more detailed simcade-like handling model for players looking for a challenge.
You can't shoot while in a car in mafia 2 but you can in mafia 1 and that game actually features manual transmission in settings with it upsides and downsides, you can put a car on some slopes while in neutral or in gear and it will roll but if you press the handbrake before leaving the car, it won't. Physics in that game was ahead of it's time and that was 2001 game, same year as GTA3. Mafia 1 wasn't handicapping itself releasing mainly on consoles, this was fully a PC game and it took every available strenght from the platform, this only confirms when you look at the ps2 port of mafia 1 and how sad it is.

@@titanusgodzillaa4274 Well in Grand Theft Auto V, it's harder to my experience with fast cars, with slower vehicles, water vehicles and parachuting; it's more enjoyable ? Best I do is with Franklin and use his Drive ability.
It's actually possible to have physics with real momentum and still have an easy to use handling model for game pad and keyboard. Take any Forza game or CarX Drift Racing Online for example. The reason these open world games have super arcadey physics is because developers and publishers think it sells better and is easier to implement. Both of those things seem highly arguable to me and I would play the shite out of a GTA game with actual momentum and half decent tire and suspension physics. Having a handling model somewhere in between CarX and Forza in GTA would be a long standing dream come true.
I remember those racing missions in cyberpunk, mind you this was when the game was new.. the rubberbanding was so strong you could see them flying behind you like you're pulling them with invisible chains attached to your own car
True Crime New York(the same series as sleeping dog) is somewhat underrated open world game and they have race as side story to catch street racer organizer. Pretty fun race TBH
Almost what I thought the video was about... But me and a friend turned a Jeep driving level in the game "Vietcong" from 2003, into a hot seat time trial race. Basically you are driving a Willy's Jeep up a Vietnamese mountain road, dodging obstacles and have the urgency of the story to contend with that is supposed to make you drive faster if my memory serves me correctly. If you fall off the road though, it is game over, so it did lead some interesting driving styles between us two to get to the finish as quickly as possible in that Jeep.
Actually the original Mafia has a racing mode, but it's exclusive only to console ports (xbox & ps2. If you beat it you'll unlock a unique monster truck, that's not available in pc version
I absolutely loved the Drone Racing in the Judgment series, especially the more technical courses. It's surprising how much the controls just become second nature and you can really flow with them.
Sleeping Dogs Racing mission is still the best of racing game mode implementation in non racing games tbh, it was well designed that made it look like it can be a separate racing games, from the HUD design, atmosphere, track and checkpoint placement, even they got a well designed Countdown system that truly make us forgot that we actually play the action games not racing game

Mafia DE actually allows you to go to racing circuit and set up race with ANY vehicle in free roam mode. which is one of my favorite things to do after finishing story. If you have entire trilogy, you can get the late 1960s car for example and have a race between them. As for original Mafia, it had racing mode in it with many tracks and even a championship, but only on PS2 version. However, mods have been made to add that to PC version too,, and they are not hard to add. And again, you can use any car. A race between 22 horsepower model T Fords is hilarious 😄 With how realistic and unforgiving driving physics are, is is also one of the most fun things to do after finishing it.
3:44 there is also another checkpoint based mission, which will be given by a Jamaican(i forgot his name), who is the leader of the Yardies. It will be given in Staunton island
Cyberpunk 2077 is really underrated in this, with the mod for manual transmission and realistic speeds it becomes easily the ultimate car game, add in a fov for first person driving and its perfect.
GTA Online economy is easy enough to get $, and certainly not broken with modders unless you’re on PC. Honestly a severely underrated racing game especially with the addition of drift and drag races

As a rider, the bike physics in driver are actually more realistic than most games. The first crash clip you showed was a fairly accurate depiction of a high side crash. Basically, your tire suddenly regains traction in a slide, the bike stops, you don't.
I remember JC4’s dlc pack or whatever it was that basically had mad max style racing where you just went from point A to point B doing as much damage as fast as you can. That was fun
Aside from Cyberpunk I genuinely didn't know there was this much games that had a bit of racing in them lol. This was a pleasant video to watch through as someone who wasn't really exposed to games like this, it's really cool learning more about these older games. Great video as always Dove!
Just Cause 3 has some weird physics but also really fun races, having a damn jump button is pretty fun, tho they are only time trials (tho there is a way to play w a friend online in real time, them being a ghost)
Considering the fact that driving is such a huge part of gta that its even part of the title I would describe gta as a racing game with shooter elements instead a shooter game with racing elements. I mean the game is quite litterally a car theft simulator.
Glad someone else sees how interesting driving in non driving games can be. One of those games for me was surprisingly warzone. The handling of the vehicles feels so nice I rush they made a silly driving mode for it.
Here's one game that is sorta part of the yakuza series, and, incorporates racing as well: Fist of the north star lost paradise. Where you have to upgrade and customize your mad max buggy and race in the wasteland. There's points to collect along the way, as well as boost power ups to help you boost more. It's fine for what it is, but I never personally got too deep into it.
You forget about The Saboteur, a WW2 open world era created by Mercenaries dev who had a racing mini game too similiar with Mafia 1 and Definitive Edition
Idk but I believe that besides some GTA games having racing, I guess even Saints Row games also have racing, like the first two games and idk I consider the Trail Blazing side activities in SR2 and SRTT as partially racing but it's a solo racing time trial, and another similar things appears in Saints Row IV but you were racing alone on foot trying to beat the desired time.
I had so much fun with the dzs on races, you can hold X for a pulse that will disable permanently other cars, could believe they allowed that. Btw mafia race on classic is demonic
Call me crazy but I love getting good at the mini games or side games in side of games, it’s very fun to catch a reaction from other players who can recognize the luck and talent needed
The racing portion of the original Mafia was infuriating. I speak this as a person who played the original before the definitive edition. Young me was SO mad.
Nice video, I think its safe to say tbere are more games to cover so a part 2 will be aprecciated. Also non-driving content in racing games would be a nice counterpart for the topic of the video
14:02 Another update, tehy also actually removed a vast majority of the game's vehicles afaik and bringing up to almost 200 bcuz of the crappy SAM update in GTA Onlline and it actually sucks to see R* removed it without any word
PVP racing in GTAV Online was pretty good back in the day and I have spent many hours racing with friends and randoms in that game. We even made custom tracks for each other and had a few really good ones. I did like the GTA4 handling better though.
The other thing with sleeping dogs is, at least during the missions, you loose Police score by crashing into any bit of breakable infrastructure, making cutting corners or crashing very not preferable
Mafia, oh man that race was so hard! I had the game when it first came out, they later added a patch to lower the difficulty but I had to play it on max difficulty. This was also in 2002 when analog controllers for PC wasn't super common like they are now. After failing many many times I ended up using my Sidewinder Force Feedback Wheel and was then able to complete it. It was pretty annoying though because I was loving the game up to that point. The atmosphere of the game was amazing at the time.
One of my al time favorites non racing games with cars is Mafia 2. For multiple reasons, the great physics make the game feel much more realistic and not many other games have cars of the 30s-50s. Its so fun speeding at a hundred mph in a gen 1 ford thunder bird down the highway, your going too fast so then you get launchd off the freeway and fall a few stories. A game without the fun physics but still with classical and early century cars would be "The Saboteur". The game is essentially gta, in Wehrmacht France. World war two civilian, military and classic formula racers are among some of the vehicles available. Its mostly you shooting and blowing up bad guys but a good portion of the game is driving/racing based. I would definitely check out saboteur. I think its on steam now, i think it was just added recently, but i got my copy on gog.
If ur old (lol im 22) youll remember the rachet and clank game on pspgo, i had nfs and midnightclub but loved the hoverboard race they had, i think was hoverboard
While GTA series isn't Midnight Club, Forza or anything like that, it's still a game that involves racing, if not is all about racing with the theft of cars and getting away from cops. It's just a different racing game.
I was pleasantly surprised how much content Saints Row 2 had when I got to experience it the first time. As someone who came from Saints Row 4 first then played 3 and then 2, it's crazy how much of what was there was sorta shafted in the later versions of the game. Including the demolition derby and racing events. While I absolutely loathed how the aerial vehicles handled in Saints Row 2, I'd still say that game has way more side content to do than 3 and 4. I will say, I do like the gun combat more in 3 and 4 comparatively.
In Mafia the race was so hard because of the abrupt change in car handling and speed the player had to experience. Up until that point the player drove cars that could barely reach 50 mph on a long straight. It was slow and the game even had a button to toggle speed limiter, so the cops wouldn't bother you. In this game cops actually chased you for speeding. And here comes this mission, about 25% into the story mode, where you have about 5 minutes to drive a racing car to the chop shop and then win a legit no bullshit race. With a car that goes about 3 times as fast as anything you driven up to this point. These cars were literally the fastest in the game.
First time ever seeing one of your videos but I appreciate the time and effort you put in to your video it actually kept me entertained the entire time keep it up
On the console versions of mafia 1 there is a complete hole racing series separate to the campaign even has tracks you never get to see otherwise like you cant just drive to there location in freeride or campaign.
Waiting the sequel "Non-racing activities in racing games" for this

Idk but I believe that besides some GTA games having racing, I guess even Saints Row games also have racing, like the first two games and idk I consider the Trail Blazing side activities in SR2 and SRTT as partially racing but it's a solo racing time trial, and another similar things appears in Saints Row IV but you were racing alone on foot trying to beat the desired time.
Also it's good to see you played Cyberpunk and my friend had played the game and he said that the racing parts are just average decent
And yeah 1:40 this is the part I was talking about
I had so much fun with the dzs on races, you can hold X for a pulse that will disable permanently other cars, could believe they allowed that.
Btw mafia race on classic is demonic
Call me crazy but I love getting good at the mini games or side games in side of games, it’s very fun to catch a reaction from other players who can recognize the luck and talent needed
Racing in sleeping dogs was always fun with the ram mechanic. What a game
23:12 Some races disallow you to use weapon, even firing them fails the mission for the example in Stadium races.
The racing portion of the original Mafia was infuriating. I speak this as a person who played the original before the definitive edition. Young me was SO mad.
The Saboteur made by EA would’ve been worth a mention. Great game all round
*They and sorry for the typo
I'm gonna be honest the handling in cyberpunk got massively improved for most cars way after 2.1
I also remember The saboteur and the few racing missions it had.
yoooooooo. driver parallel linessssssss. was great on the wii
Judgment and Lost Judgment's Drone Racing was simple, yes... but boy did it pull you in.
I don't play GTA Online very often but when I do I mostly stick to racing, the multi-vehicle races are especially fun
mafia 1 was playable with a steering wheel. i used it for the race. it was easy like a true racing game
You forgot to mention that gta VC mission in which you had to race the getaway driver from the bank robbery. So hard!
gta3 also have a racing mission from king courtney
loving this video and the included minigame of trying to figure out where your various accents are from
idk I was partially sick when doin voiceovers so maybe that effected it lol
I only knew about the car dealer races for Vice City, interesting with the others.
GTA Online on consoles is still very fun, as races usually let you use a competitive car despite not owning it
GTA isnt the most sold game anymore... its Minecraft..., but other then that, great video, loved it, keep up the good work ^^
Mafia had a bunh of City-race events in the main menu of the Xbos and PS2 port
When yakuza becomes wangan midnight on crack and sake
i was hooked on gta online stunt races for a long time. was fun for it's time
I think that one game worth mentioning is Batman Arkham Knight, as it centers a lot around the Batmobile it also includes races
Surprised you didn´t put the mission "The Driver" in Vice City considering how infamous it can be for inexperienced drivers.
If ur old (lol im 22) youll remember the rachet and clank game on pspgo, i had nfs and midnightclub but loved the hoverboard race they had, i think was hoverboard
Yea I am very old (I am 23 lmao)
You need to do a part 2.
Most ironic thing is there are police mods for GTA
(and its awesome)
First time ever seeing one of your videos but I appreciate the time and effort you put in to your video it actually kept me entertained the entire time keep it up
The good old days of GTA5 Competitive Racing... Hopefully the physics in are good enough to bring back the gang together for some racing
On the console versions of mafia 1 there is a complete hole racing series separate to the campaign even has tracks you never get to see otherwise like you cant just drive to there location in freeride or campaign.
The Persona music at the end triggered me 😭
