The ignition switch went on my connect a couple of days ago so I left the switch dangling put the key in the ignition to get through the immobiliser and used a flat head screwdriver to turn the switch to start the van until I get a new one, I did think about using something like paper or foil, glad to see other people doing the same there’s ways around everything.
Thank you for this video. I have been restoring my 2001 Ford Focus SOHC , and changed the relays, but not the ignition switch. Would not start. I had the part, so I thought it is time to install. It went very easy, and only took less then an hour. Everything went smoothly. 20 year old car and still running, just needed everything replaced. The old ignition switch part has the hole where the key went in was totally torn out into a round hole. Very grateful for your help.
There are a lot of posts on TH-cam about this problem and you are the only one I found with an answer! Picked up the parts and I'm heading to the garage! GREAT job on this video, very clear and well done. Even one handed!
Got the switch installed and it starts every time. My son's car and he's a teacher so it's very important that it starts reliably. Keep up the great videos. Now...on to replacing the front wheel bearings!
car stranded at wal mart right now and it snowed last night here in Iowa. cold too. UGH. Collected tools, got a sterno candle for heat, getting ride to parts store and then to car and gonna do this in parking lot at wally world! Really hoping this is it. Pretty sure it is. Came out of store last night and key turned fine, but there was NO POWER TO ANYTHING SWITCHED, ONLY POWER TO BATTERY-DIRECT-CONNECTED STUFF. Car was running perfectly with no warning signs before this. Gonna check 30 amp fuse in the under-hood fuse block first though...the one with the "key" icon on diagram. Pray for success please. Praise God either way. Amen? Thanks for the video. very clear and understandable. Nice job! I will give follow up in a few hours! :) UPDATE: replace 30 amp ignition fuse under hood. Drove home. Starter wouldn't disengage. Turned off key. Engine wouldn't stop. Power cable to starter started on fire. Pulled battery cable and it died finally. Haven't tried to start since. Selling: Finch, an 01 ford focus zx3 yellow. Dead. for parts, Ames iowa.
Thank you, you might have saved me a whole lot of time and money. I'm still not sure if the starter switch or the relay are the reason my car won't start, but at least I can check these two by myself, now that my car won't move. I'm just wondering, my car started normally this morning, but as I was leaving the parking lot it just went dead suddenly. Is that possible once the ignition is on that these two culprits are the reason for my trouble. After the car went dead it didn't start at all later on. No sound, no clicks, nothing, as if I removed the battery. Thanks for the video.
That can very well be the ignition switch. My model is start with the cheapest thing first then move on to the bigger stuff. I am glad this video helped you. Thanks 🙏
What symptoms did you have for this? I am currently trying to figure out mine. My starter was slow to turn and would start clicking when I'd turn the key. So I took it to the shop, they told me it was the battery. I replaced the battery. Then told me it was the alternator, replaced the alternator. Same issue. Said it was a bad battery, replaced it. Still having issue. Was told it was my starter(which is a year old Motorcraft, bought new) took out the started and took it to 3 different places, all said the starter is good. So now I have no idea what it could be. When I have trouble starting it where it turns slowly and then just clicks, I pull out my meter and it shows a full charge battery 12.6 volts. Only way I can get it started when this happens is jumping the car, which I know can't be good to jump a battery with a full charge. Wondering if this video would be the fix.
Hello I want your help on something I have the ford focus '99 i put on the key on the switch and the car wont start...do you know if the problem is this switch that you change (this one with the paper on it ) ???? Thank you
Buenos días,precento un problema, con un Focus 2003,da marcha pero no arranca ,hay pulso de 5 volts ,pero no hay chispa ,de cables ,remplace cilindro y pastilla ,bobina ,y no hay chispa, que me recomienda
In my car the whole ignition switch is out on the left side and all I do to start it is to put the key in so it can read the chip then get a small key or something then I can turn the ignition switch to start the car...I like to call it One of a kind 😂
This is a very good video. Thank you for sharing. Question. Would this problem also cause the car to shut off while driving? mine does but also starts up again just as fast. A few times hard to turn over and start. Thanks
mine has everything good, all relays and fuses, the only thing that I didn't care is this, but I have a question, It matter if is automatic or manual ?
hey.. yes it does matter, because the manual has a switch on your clutch, and that can be faulty as well, let me know if you have anymore questions, and don't forget to subscribe
Have had problems with my focus starting. Sometimes it will just start right up no problem, sometimes i have to cycle the key a few times and it will finally start. I have had to push start it a couple times since then as well. When it wont start and you put the key in the starting position nothing happens but I can hear the relay click. I do not know if this relay is for the clutch switch or the starter relay. I have bypassed the clutch switch to make sure that was not the problem but it only does this sometimes do you think my ignition switch might be going out or is the starter or starter solenoid.
The video doesn't show what the car was doing before you started working on it. I have a 2001 Ford Focus automatic transmission. Started fine one minute and won't start at all now. I know the battery is good. It's brand new. When I turn the key the lights come on, radio works, all of the accessories work, it dings, but it doesn't try to crank AT ALL. Is this to fix that problem? Do you know what might?
hi in uk have 2002 focus estate 1.8 diesel turn key battery light handbrake light etc comes on turn bit further for engine start an its just clickin once cud be starter motor???
For all you homies with mk1 focus starter issues, lift the cover on the engine relays & fuses. Tape them all with the car key on the top of them all & may work as it did with mine, piece out bredrins.
I got no crank, no start, dashes on odometer, have checked all fuses, relays , battery voltage and all is in order. what could be the problem please, this a Focus TDDI 1.8 2000 Diesel.
This is actually started when I got it to the so called dealer who was messing around the PATS configuration after swapping the injector pump, And now I am getting the ENGINE WARNING LIGHT, and POWERTRAIN WARNING LIGHT in arrange after turning the ignition ON, these should turn on normally. I have been adviced the issue could be with the PCM, that do you think?
When I insert the key and the odo meter show bar(no number) But sometimes is OK(When it could start, Starter, battery, relay all is in good condition and nothing strange) In my situation, should I replace this IS161 ?
driving out of town and all of the sudden my breaks are hard to push, steering wheel was extremely hard to turn. stopped safely tried to turn the car on and it would crank but not start . bought a new battery and still wouldn't start. took it to a mechanic and he said the timing belt busted we replaced it and it started then shut off. I don't know what to do can someone recommend anything I can look into
Check all your fuses, like fuel pump fuses, everyone of them, check your wires. To start a engine you need fuel pressure, spark, and air... So Start there
If this is what's wrong with my car I'll just wire a 3 position toggle switch for accessory/on and a momentary for the starter, and because I'm an asshole I'll put a momentary next to the toggle to trigger the airbag but label it 'start' and hide the real starter button.
Don’t forget to like and subscribe. Thanks a lot!

Did the trick for our '09 Focus. $20 fix. Thanks!
IT WORKED!!! I SIMPLEY USED MY TOES TO PUSH IN INSTEAD OF CLUTCH AND BAM! IT STARTED. YOU SAVED ME. THANK U THANK U FOR THIS!!!
I'm glad I could help
Is your car a manual? My it takes me 5-10 times of turning ignition befor it starts up. Is this similar to what you were experiencing?

Bob Boilerman and also if you can always check your battery connections, and verify that you have a good battery ground. Thanks once again!

Great vid. Guy at ford dealer told me I needed a new steering column.
Thanks for clear walkthrough. Easy cheap fix, versus couple hundred bucks at the shop.

Hello

I have the ford focus '99 i put on the key on the switch and the car wont start...do you know if the problem is this switch that you change (this one with the paper on it ) ???? Thank you
It could be the switch.
I guess you could bypass the switch with a keyless system.. great video
thank you good to know Chris
+chris wall you're welcome!
thanks, im about to see if i can do this!

That's sounds like a bad ground or battery connections,
Yes, sounds like it, and it was. Checked connections and ground strap and wire. No more problem. Thanks for the reply and advice

Yes, i think so, you should check both of them. You see, the only way of finding a problem is to narrow it down, hope this helps.
+CarFix bought both switches yesterday will replace and see if I still have the problem
+TheFawawa sounds like fuel pump or fuel sending unit. Then again your o2 sensor could need replacing.
Had to replace the starter on mine has been fine for months now

+lala pinkberry it can be a bad starter or a starter relay, if it clicks it's because of the starter.
hello I have a 2012 ford focus hatchback . and it doesn't start not even the light. I have to open with the key manual
hello, i think i could be a starter fuse or a relay, maybe if you can explain a little better i will try to get you answers. Thanks for your question
did u ever find out what was wrong?
hi in uk have 2002 focus estate 1.8 diesel turn key battery light handbrake light etc comes on turn bit further for engine start an its just clickin once cud be starter motor???

my 2001 f focus won't start or crank. any idea what it could be ?

Just regular paper.
For all you homies with mk1 focus starter issues, lift the cover on the engine relays & fuses. Tape them all with the car key on the top of them all & may work as it did with mine, piece out bredrins.

check your grounds from the battery to the engine, you probably have a bad starter.
If the battery voltage is good, that does not mean that the battery has enough cold cranking amps (CCA).
