Manu Pillai on his book Rebel Sultan and the history of Deccan beyond Shivaji

  • Manu Pillai may have an entirely Macaulayesque education - including at the celebrated King’s College in London and Fergusson College in Pune - but his rigorous research and an exceptional eye for the hidden historical detail makes him a force to watch. In Rebel Sultans, Manu trawls through 400 years of roiling history and tells some pivotal stories of India you’ve probably haven’t heard before, with Shoma Chaudhury at Algebra Club.

Algebra takes the idea of a club - a universe of the likeminded - and expands it to new paradigms. The key idea behind Algebra is to bring together a fellowship of people who believe great cities are built not just on infrastructure but a life of the mind; who understand robust and liberal societies need the oxygen of great conversation and nuanced thinking. At a time when we are increasingly surrounded by rage and noise, Algebra is that unique live and continuous space where people could go for a genuine exchange of ideas and exposure to issues; where new seeds could be sparked, fresh perspectives formed, and intelligent connections made.
Algebra - the Arts and Ideas Club is designed to host over 60 conversations over the year with topline thinkers and practitioners from almost every discipline that impacts human affairs: politics, economy, environment, spirituality, cinema, medicine, science, technology, music, media, literature, the arts, sports, people’s movements, et al. In a line, Algebra is a space where one can meet an exciting, cutting-edge spectrum of people shaping the world in different ways. Where one can test one’s ideas, challenge one’s perspectives, and build friendships. A sort of fellowship of the curious and engaged.
Membership to Algebra is by invitation or referral. If you know an Algebra member, ask them to put you in touch with us. For more, click HERE:

Politics, pragmatism, greed, and power are the motivational forces of current day political parties of India as well. We must realize religion is just one of their tool to divide and rule us. Whether it would be so-called Hiduvita propagated by BJP or minority appeasement politics led by Congress.

history should not judged based on ideology, its should be based on objectivity. Manu Pillai makes accurate facts which have been corroborated by other writers like for example malik amber the African mercenary who fought against mughals and he infact was hated by jahangir. there is famous mughal painting where prince jahangir seen targeting malik amber head with a bow.

@bhanu prakash, his details may well have been corroborated, but they also betray the subterfuge in his narrative! Sadly, this new kid on the block seems to suffer from exactly the same problem as his boss and his ideological co-travelers do! *He is struggling to draw false equivalences between cultural assimilation and brutal invasions and tyranny to establish that Moghuls were as much of Indians as the Hindu rulers were!* Funnily enough, he cites the fact that the _Pallava_ dynasty brought one of its heirs from Vietnam as a case in point! *What his subterfuge is trying to hide, though, is the fact that the Indian civilization had a profound influence on Vietnam and that the **_Champa_** civilization was an offshoot of the Indian civilization!* Then he asserts that Kerala did more trade with the Middle East than north India! So what if that was the case? Isn’t it natural for a nation that has a geography that is as vast as India is to engage in trade with nations that are more accessible to them than its own remote parts??? *This new kid on the block is trying to do nothing different from what his boss and his ideological co-travelers have done all these decades: try and gloss over, whitewash, and even eulogize the brutalities of Islamic invasions and the tyranny of Islamic rulers on the Indian population!*
*Will he demonstrate the intellectual honesty to write the true history of **_Mapplia Lahala_** that was unleashed in his own state of Kerala in the disguise of the **_Khilafat Movement_** and how the district of **_Malappuram_** became a Muslim majority district? Will he demonstrate the intellectual honesty to write the true history of Tipu’s invasion of Kerala and the brutalities he unleashed on the Hindu population of Malabar? His boss has never dared to utter or write a word about these facts of history!*

29:06 Suratrana (IAST: Suratrāṇa, सुरत्राण) is a Sanskrit word that has been interpreted to mean either "protector of gods", or a transliteration of the Islamic word "Sultan" into Sanskrit.[1][2] The term consists of two words "sura" (सुर) meaning "deva, gods, deity",[3] and trana (त्राण) meaning "protect, preserve, defend".[4][5][note 1]
Now that we know this why does he keep saying that the word Sultan has been appropriated, maybe not here but in the podcast I was listening to.

One Saraswati-praising sultan does not erase the fact that majority of the Muslim emperors wanted to convert India from a "dar-ul-harb" to "dar-ul-islam", and that about 8 CRORE non-Muslims ( Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, Sikhs etc) were butchered in the process. The name of the book itself betrays his motive - Rebel Sultans : The Deccan From Khalji to Shivaji - Khalji was never a "Deccan" sultan. He was always a "Delhi" sultan, and he used the Deccan only used for looting and replenishing his treasury. As for he branding Shivaji as a "sultan", it's utterly laughable and is clearly a rhyming trick (khilji - Shivaji). Shivaji always wanted to establish a "Swarajya", not a "Sultanat'.

His boss has never dared to utter or write a word about these facts of history!*

true true, the new kid on the block and even his boss is from Nair community and still they do not even say a word about TIPU who murdered nairs and other hindu communities of malabar. If the new kid on the block write true history without any biase then he would never be this famous and would be very tough to make money and his true history would be either banned or regarded as communal and number of readers and buyers will be low and he would also not able to make money and live a western lifestyle. The New Kid on the block speaks good english as his boss, people judges on their language skills and it is disappointing that many people in our country regard him as true historian and readers who doesnt read much history just picks up a book on history from "history" book rack from bookstores dont even do much research to understand about the authors intention and goals and just read and give him such a good review saying
the book has changed my life" "it brought me into history " "It is my first non fiction book and it is bthe best " "teaching me alot outside my shcool syllabus " and blah blah. Only casual and ignorant and white washed readers reads such history.
They are also lazy to do right research, He and his boss are influenced by left historians and white british historians who wrote on India and hindusim. They are knowingly writing such shit as disrespecting our countries history, defaming us and hindusims. Whatever the hell. Anwyay
      Very disappointing.
