ohhh I stumbled into this shop one day and had the lamingtons, such a random thing because I caught a wrong bus and ended up at her shop ... divine intervention .. I do recommend these bakements !!!!
Anything Durian or Pandan is 100% what we love as well. Thank you so much for commenting :) This really supports the work Wendy does and this channel too.
What an honour to have you watch this documentary! We love Wendy and what she brings. Also so many chefs in our network have been blessed by your foundations so thank you for all you do Best, Justin
What a fantastic piece of storytelling! Love how the heart & soul of the place shines through. Wendy & her team are wonderful. Malaysian telling another Malaysian’s story, in their adopted home… ❤❤ Malaysia boleh!!
I was in Singapore sometime ago and I was having a meal at McDonald's where I've tried the Nasi Lemak burger. I've eaten the real thing before, but that burger was innovative and it had a lot of good feedback from customers who had it. But this didn't settle well with the Malaysians because they went on a sarcastic roll and said "where is the Nasi (rice)? Where is the Lemak (fat - usually referred to the rice that's cooked in coconut milk)?" 😂 Truth be told, there was no rice, but the flavour profile hit all the right notes of a traditional Nasi Lemak you would have from either Malaysia or Singapore. From a person who has absolutely loved both Malaysian and Singapore food, and found no reason for Malaysians to attack Singapore food culture, I truly support creativity, and your invention is to die for. And I think, everyone needs to break that barrier and stop being judgy about traditional stuff. To me, both Malaysia and Singapore share the same traditions and culture between the same Indians, the Malays and the Chinese and that's what makes these two countries unique. By all means, these two countries should be supporting one another and unite on one commonality, and that's food.
Honouring tradition and building on authentic flavours is so important. But yes, we are a fast moving society and food trends are always changing. I think putting these traditional flavours into different formats (burgers and tarts) gives way to more opportunity for others to try it :)
I’ve been following Folds’ instagram and visited a few times. Just wanna say thanks for making me a proud Malaysian here in Auckland, also making me feel home whenever I taste the familiar flavours of home ❤ Looking forward to try EVERYTHING in the menu! 😂
Thank you so much for commenting Eunice. This means so much to us. A bunch of us here at the StoryBites team are also Malaysian so we have a real softspot for Malaysian venues doing epic things here in NZ!
I never been to Folds Pattiserie in Auckland. She is from the same hometown Miri where I came from. Wish I would love to visit but I'm in Christchurch and maybe one day in future💚
So great to hear you’re also from Miri! I think Wendy would love to meet you too. Please do visit and say hi for us when you manage to get to AKL one day :)

i just made an asian inspired tea time recipes too. i made pandan coconut cake japanese egg sando and other items. i love this! my mom and family had a blast w asian inspired tea time!
Beautiful story and nice comments at the end acknowledging the team at Folds. Haven’t had a chance to get into the city to visit them but hope to soon. My mother migrated here from Singapore with my Kiwi dad and 3 year old me in 1980. Was a very different time then in terms of food so we often talk about how lucky we are these days compared to just 40(ahem) something years ago! 😊
What an incredible time you speak about, thanks so much for sharing. We’re all about sharing the work that migrant family businesses put into sharing their culture. Stay tuned for more!
Awesome story! Makes me proud to be a Malaysian :) Will definitely look up Folds when I’m in Auckland!!! Will there be a Folds in Wellington in the near future?
Western pastries are still very shy with pandan, could be the French themselves have not picked up the flavour to incorporate into their pastry. I LOVE PANDAN! Pandan cupcakes, pandan chiffon, pandan swiss rolls, pandan steamed cake, pandan bread etc. Opening up a cake box, you will get this undeniable aroma of pandan that is just divine.
Love your stories - thanks for sharing! I've always wanted to try ube, it reminds me of purple kumara, and this patisserie is on my bucket list now. Arohanui
I love it when South East Asian flavours mixes with Western pastries ♡
