  • In this video, I am going to show you how to find out how much power your RTX 4090 really needs. This is an important step if you want to avoid disappointment and get the most out of your new card!
    Just adding VSync option and easy undervolting can improve using experience. And how to make your GPU silent.
    The same rule applies to any other card that has more power then your monitor needs. Cards like 4080, 4070 Ti, 3090 Ti, 3090 and ect.

    Wow, first video on YT where someone is showing actual power consumption without extra talk however with condition accurate for most players (144 hz on monitor)
    Thank u for that simple video!!!

      What were you looking for exactly? A palliative that would make you love the 4090 for both performance and p.consumption? Too bad you won't find it here nor in any other video; want a very good 1440p gpu that is also p.efficient? Go 4080. 4070TI would be great too if it had better memory specs

    • @johnarigi6274

      @@sandbox8717 Nope your assumption is wrong, and exactly opposite of what I was looking for. 4080 at 1200$ no thanks, the 4090 is way better value for all it offers. I would rather even get the 7900XT at 800$ than a 4080. Also I play in 4k mainly not 1440p or 1440p uw. Last part I do agree though the Vram and bandwidth really hamper the 4070ti.
      Der8auer also shows how power efficient the 4090 is "for what it offers " when tuned right.

    • @sandbox8717
      @sandbox8717 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@johnarigi6274 even if you set your 4090 up with der8auer efficiency curve it's drawing AT LEAST 350w therefore, as stated in my previous comment, you can't get both high fps and low wattage in general, unless you're playing exclusively something like a moba or...(I said LOW WATTAGE, not POWER EFFICIENCY!). Therefore it's not clear what you were looking for when watched this video, since there the owner is basically saying: "look at how low the power draw is, they're all lying", then you look at gpus usage and it sits at 60% at best.... thx to my ass, every gpu draws significally less as soon as you drop the load, here's a hint: since the load is extremely low he could prob get away with a 4080 at around 85% load and draw even less, also saving at least 400eur like this; incredible right?!
      that's why ppl chose a gpu based on the resolution they're playing at, instead of going straight for the top end gpu....lol
      Also the comparison between nvidia and amd is just inappropriate: the topic of the video is energy consumption at X performance; if you type "that's exactly what I was looking for" in a context like this1 it basically means you're a person looking for a "low/moderate" wattage gpu, and this is definitely NOT the 4090 profile.
      From this pov nvidia is just better hands down: the 7900 xtx draws like a 4090 with 4080 perf, while the 7900 xt drinks like a 4080 but fermorms like a 4070ti; I would definitely pick a 7900xt over a 4070 ti but for the profile you described the 4080 is THE pick; ofc the 4080 it's a maxed 1440p gpu, I wouldn't buy it for 4k unless you're playing stuff like mobas, diablo, hollow knight, console emulators in general....

    Would be interesting to see all these benchmarks again with an undervolted 4090. Setting a power limit only saves you power, when close to 100% usage. But when the card is at lower loads (which will happen all the time, if you cap fps), then setting a power limit changes nothing about power usage.
    For example, you could set a standard undervolt for the 40 series cards, by pulling up the frequency curve in MSI afterburner by 150-250 mhz and then capping the voltage at 900-950mV. This should bring a 4090 at 100% load down from 400+ to around 300 watts, potentially even somewhere around 250-280. Expected performance loss with an undervolt like that is only 5-8%, which you won't notice anyway, unless you are staring at the fps counter.

    This is with 100% power target/without Afterburner settings? If so, that card doesnt really need more power then my 4080... That would indicate that power consumption scales pretty much linear with the 40series...

    4090 are power efficiently and beast of performance

  • @impc8265
    @impc8265 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    the 4090 is indeed very efficient, though not by capping your frame rate, but instead limiting your power consumption. The 4090 still delivers 95% of its performance even when limited to 70% power consumption. As for the reason why you would want 300+ fps when your monitor is 144hz, that is because when you have significantly higher fps than your monitor refresh rate, your GPU can let the monitor display the most recent generated frame when the monitor is about to refresh and significantly reduce input delay. This is especially important in FPS games, hence you never see esport players or streamers use V-sync in FPS games.

    • @trysometech52
      @trysometech52  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      True, but this rule works if you have a 60Hz monitor and disable V-sync, you'll notice it immediately. For a 144 monitor, the difference is not that high: 1-2 ms. For an Esport player it might matter, but for the rest of us it doesn't :)

    Just what I was looking for so it basically runs low power just like any other GPU playing a little demanding game and runs high when needs to act like the monster that it is. I figured this would make sense but I couldn’t really confirm anywhere never had a gaming PC and didn’t have enough confirmed knowledge about silicon. Best of both worlds, nice to know. Just curious is your 4090 under volted and curve optimized? Don’t think you would ever see it go over 350 if you had that in check

    • @trysometech52
      @trysometech52  ปีที่แล้ว

      I just use Power Limit at 69%, you can see that in the end of the video. Power draw is around 300 Watts at peak load, and performance is almost the same. As far as I know, it’s the best way to undervolt it

    • @ChiquitaSpeaks
      @ChiquitaSpeaks ปีที่แล้ว

      @@trysometech52 undervolting actually makes the chip more efficient, think of it as fine-tuning beyond how it comes from the factory. Power limiting is just that preventing it from going over a certain limit which works really well enough though with the 4090 because it only loses at most about 10% from 350 to 450 W. Might be something to consider. Point is if you’re already power limiting you only have something to gain by doing the other, I’d say best is to do both
