No more rust! Floors repaired on the FLOODED Corvair!

  • On today's video, we're tackling the rust repair on the floors and getting it one step closer to being a daily driver. I've been putting off the floor repair for some time (not sure why) but today it's done!
    We've cut out the rust, welded in new metal, seam sealed and then POR-15'd the entire inside of the car, so rust should NEVER be an issue again!

    Another good video. A couple things I would tell folks doing floors. First they are not hard and can be great place to start learning. I did the floors in my Stang and I had never welded or done serious metal work before. Just took my time and made sure I did it right. Second pay attention to the location of brake and gas lines. Lastly note the location of brackets. Two spots on the passenger side I had to replace also had brackets for the emergency brake cable. I did not realize that and end up cutting them off without knowing. Had to go find another car and measure where those brackets went to get them back where they belonged. But I did it.

    Hello Sean. Nice patch work. The floors had some issues, but you made it look good. It will keep exhaust fumes from coming in, also.

    Great video! I hear somewhere that you have to take the tank out for safety if welding the body. What's your take on that?

      Thank you! If you're welding on the trunk I would recommend removing the fuel tank. If you're just doing the floors I would think it would likely be OK to leave in place.

    Hello did you put some of the POR 15 on bottom side of the floor?

      No, but I did put some rubberized undercoating on the bottom of nearly all the floors

    I know the car was in a flood, but one flood doesn't rot the floor under the back seat so I'm guessing there's a leak elsewhere, like the rear window. Rust under the gas pedal is a given in many cars and even around those floor plugs / low spots. You are moving forward nicely. I did a floor on a Corvan 95 a few years ago and I found that Clarks has the various rubber seals to go around the space where the heater cables go through by the lower defroster ducts. Those are the kind of parts that make a repair into a sweet deal.

    Working on a '66 Mustang and have a possibly dumb question. Does applying POR-15 to surface rust like that essentially stop it from growing or should you rid all surface rust first?

      POR-15 is designed to Paint Over Rust (POR). It seals it from oxygen, effectively stopping the oxidation process.

    Did you skip the pre steps for the por15? It really sticks and is durable. What a change for the interior without the rusty floor!

      Yeah, I didn’t do the metal prep just wire brushed and vacuumed the floors. This stuff is really amazing on metal and I’m sure the rest of the car will give out before the floor pans!

      @@AutoAnatomy Prep is vitally important with POR. Painting it over dirt and brushed over rust will not keep it from rusting.
