Custom Stainless Exhaust for the FLOODED Corvair: Eliminating the Drone!

- On today's video, we're building a custom stainless steel exhaust for the flooded 1965 Corvair Monza 110. The goal was to eliminate the drone on the interstate and create something unique and give me a chance to improve my TIG skills. Ever since we installed the "Ultimate" exhaust, it has droned terribly at 3000 RPM, and sadly that's right where I want to drive on the interstate. Since we're driving the car to a lot more shows this year, it needed to be tolerable for long distances. Plus, we're going to try and drive the car to the Corsa nationals in OH this year!
Follow along as I take on the challenge of learning to work with stainless steel and practice my TIG skills.

I like the tone. It gives it a sports car sound.
Thank you!
Rubber mounts instead of directly welded will reduce noise dramatically. The new exhaust is FAR sexier!
Thanks! I think on the next iteration I'll try and make some form of rubber isolator between the mount and the body.
I am total agreement with adding some type of isolator. I also believe some dynomat on the rear deck area might help. Nice exhaust.
One thing that you didn't have in your previous exhaust system, was a "balance pipe". It really quiets down the whole system if it is placed correctly and the correct diameter pipe.
from an electronic stand point the human hearing can't distinguish less than a 3 db difference in sound level. you may have hated the droning, but yeah I don't like the new sound, maybe an actual muffler would be better. love you videos looking forward to the EFI videos. mike
Hi Mike! Make sure to check out the first FI video as there is an update on the muffler situation
Love the exhaust upgrade. Appreciate your diligence and disciplined approach. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you!
I have to say that your videos are very well done. I have shared them with my whole corvair family and friends. I've been into corvairs for about 40 years now and my son just purchased his first corvair and is in the middle of the resurrection. Your videos are a great inspiration and help for him in finishing it.
Thanks Brett Aston
Hi Brett! Thanks for the kind words. It's been a lot of fun making this one and best of luck to your son on getting his Corvair back on the road. If you/he need any help or would like to see a specific video get made, let me know.
Sean
I like that sweet sound. At least on my monitor... Lots of work to build that; way more than I would have attempted. Looking forward to that EFI!
Thanks buddy. It sounds good in person, too!
I really enjoy the Corvair videos, but I’ve really enjoyed watching this one. Great Job! Keep it up.
Thank you so much!
Another awesome video , I’m excited to know your coming to the Corvair convention in Dayton, I live 2 1/2 hours from there. I would love to meet you and look at your Corvair, and you can check out mine. I’ll be sure to wear my Auto Anatomy t shirt lol. Thanks again for the awesome video.
Thank you so much, and hope to meet you there!
Really enjoy your videos. I currently am restoring a 66 Corsa. I am getting a lot of good ideas from you. I so much like the new exhaust versus the other exhaust. I think I am going to follow the direction you went, but I will cut out, the floor of the engine compartment to make more room for a larger muffler.
Thank you so much! I've actually changed the muffler out to something different that I like much better. It'll be shown at the beginning of my next video (the Fuel Injection video) which should be coming out in the next week
Beautiful work. You packaged the entire system very well. Happy to hear you were able to get rid of the droning. That drone can get old in a hurry. It seems to me the exhaust note has taken on a more modern, small displacement sound. Probably more a matter of preference to most. If it were a choice between the lower exhaust note w/drone or the raspier tone wo/drone, I'd take the latter. Great job. God bless.
Thanks so much, it was a fun time trying to figure out how to package it all in such a tight area. It does sound more small-displacement, but I'm glad the drone is gone! Probably going to keep making changes to the exhaust until it's exactly what I want (it's really close now).
Sean, I had put a JC Whitney complete header/exhaust system on my 73 Vega back in 74, but didn't like the raspy sound either so I took it to a muffler shop and they welded in the wheel wells a couple of 55 T-bird mufflers. Excellent sound and space-saving like the SS one you just put on.
I wonder if JC Whitney is still in business...
Your skill level is really improving by leaps and bounds. You're getting like some of the other you tubers - things are becoming second nature to you. I like the exhaust note but that's just me- I've ridden loud Harleys all my adult life. If the exhaust becomes an irritant to your ears just remember you have a whole canvas to work with. Don't confine the exhaust to just the engine area you can most certainly use some of the other under carriage areas. Nice work !
Thank you so much! I'm loving getting to know the Corvair community and how generous and supportive they have been.
Great job on the exhaust system. My opinion is that the new exhaust sounds better.
Thanks so much! Been driving it a lot lately to get a better feel. Time will tell
Great video. I like the new exhaust, more motorcycle sounding to me. Thats a lot of work 👏👏👏
Thank you! It's definitely a different tone than before, and time will tell whether or not it changes again.
I do like the sound of your new exhaust . It's has a deeper tone.
Thanks! I actually have already changed the muffler (again) and like it even better. I'll see if I can get a clip now of the newest muffler.
Hello Sean. Real nice work on the exhaust. Getting rid of that drone was a good idea. Should make it more pleasurable to drive.
George B
Thank you George!
I like the exhaust note on the new system.
Thank you!
Sounds a little like a Porsche 911 with a little flavor of Ferrari exhaust note; you did an awesome job. I love it.
Thank you very much!
Just wow; I don’t know what kind of work you do in the medical field, but if you’re a fraction of the talent you show in your garage, you are saving lives.🍷
I can turn a wrench, but you take it to another level. Clark’s should hire you as R&D.🍺
Thank you so much. I'm a pulmonary/critical care nurse practitioner by day job, and VERY amateur car guy by night. Thanks for the compliments!
Nice presentation. Thanks
Thank you!
I like the exhaust system that you fabricated, nice design. Now that you have a nice prototype, I think there's a market for it if you could find a place to bend up all the pipes. It won't be a cheap kit, but there are quite a few LM owners who will pony up the dough for a quality exhaust system. That S/S will out live the owner!
That would be neat to have it built, I'm not sure how many would be interested but if there is enough interest I could look into it.
I'm thinking, after seeing this muffler that an oval one would show even less. you're absolutely correct the new sound is amazing. I had dual exhaust on my truck and I got them from the dealer were even made by Toyota under the TRD option. 60 MPH a terrible drone sound!
I've met me and I would have notched the rear valance so the exhaust tip would be more straight out the back....and more visible. I like the sound of the new system a bit better.
Great sounding "saxophone" you made there! Good job on the tig welding.
Thank you!
I like the full open throttle sound, but have to be honest, that was a lot of work for not much return. I would have tried other mufflers. Enjoyed the video.
It was a lot of work but I think it was absolutely worth it. The drone is gone and there was a significant reduction in sound pressure. Remember, for every reduction of 3db, sound pressure (not volume) is halved.
Plus, I've already changed the muffler out for another one and like it even better! Check out our social media page and there's a short clip.
Sean, I purchased stainless steel pipe and bends from Burns Stainless! I’ve had the two into one since 2001, I’m looking to change it up and use it on a turbocharged 140. I will also include an O2 bung to run a sensor for air fuel ratio gauge. Great work!
Great! I hear good things about the quality of Burns products. I think the next time I remake this exhaust fully it will be for a turbocharger system
Just live with it for a while, personally I like the deeper node.beautiful work on those welds.thanks John from Arizona
Thank you! Going to take it on a short road trip today…it’ll be a good test of its road worthiness
Hey Sean!! Enjoyed the video and could see that a LOT of work went into the design and fabrication. The results were interesting though not as substantial as I'd anticipated. Thanks for the plug for the 2024 Corvairborne Convention in Dayton, Ohio this summer. We will look forward to seeing you there. Hmmmm....fuel injection next? I'll be interested to see your approach to this idea. I know, it has been done but I've heard the results are mixed. Anyway, keep up your good work and fixing up the "FLOODED Corvair!!"
Hi Craig! Like I said towards the end...as long as the drone went away it was worth all the time spent. I was hoping it would be a bit quieter than it was, but I think that's a function of it being a resonator vs a true muffler. Perhaps with an actual muffler the results would be even more dramatic.
My wife and I are really looking forward to trying to drive the car up to the show. It's about 450 miles from our house here in SC to the show, so it wouldn't be that bad of a drive, but certainly the longest trip we've been on in the car.
As for the fuel injection, I can't imagine a situation where the car is less driveable or has worse mileage/power with fuel injection than with the carbs. So if it improves any one of the three (Mileage/Driveability/Power), I'll be happy. All three and I'll be ecstatic!
Thanks again for all the support and encouragement, and I look forward to seeing you in OH!
Sean & Christie
I definitely like the new exhaust tone better.
Thanks, me too!
My 1964 Spyder was the same thing...3000 rpm at 60 MPH with a 3.55 : 1 rear and 13 inch tires. The Turbo muffler was basically a straight through pipe. I had a cutout for racing and it didn't sound any different. The turbocharger took care of most of the exhaust noise. Apparently the factory did their homework for noise control. Droning was not a problem.
I like the Ultimate exhaust better. As stated prior, all that was needed to eliminate the drone was to install a static tube on one exhaust...the opposite side from the O2 bung.? Maybe a foot long and no exit, just a small surge tube...no drone.
I'm not sure there is enough room to put a Hemholtz resonator of sufficient length. From rough calculations, it would need to be around 30" long to cancel the frequency.
That being said, I also love experimenting to see what can be done with these cars. So it's been fun building exhaust systems...sometimes they work, sometimes not so much.
Great stuff! Getting the tail pipe opening behind the car a bit will help with the overall noise level and the drone. Space is limited for your S bend pipe. Buy a stainless donut or torus, cut it in quarters and you’ll be able to make the S Turn and get that pipe out from under the car.
I've got a few ideas on how to make it even better. Sadly, my brain never stops...
I have Clark’s Corvair trombone exhausts. They have a nice tone, no drone and are dual pipes.
Glad they worked well for you! I liked the sound on this car but was just too much for my ears.
Absolutely love the new exhaust…..
Thanks buddy!
Just a good quality muffler nothing fancy
Auto Anatomy is my favorite videos , I have an idea on making baffle for exhaust . Hope to see you in Ohio .
Thank you so much! I'd love to hear about your idea for a baffle. Shoot me an email at autoanatomy@icloud.com with your ideas. Look forward to meeting you in OH!
Good video, another option is a flex joint just before the muffler and mount the with rubber isolators. Time will tell its all a guesstimate, even the pros have a trial period.
You may be able to do something with an attenuator type tail pipe!
Thank you! I thought about some form of tailpipe resonator as well, so will keep looking!
Nice job!! I think you could’ve mounted the muffler with a universal muffler hanger that’s captured by an exhaust clamp
It's so tight up in that area, honestly there is probably 1/2" of clearance all around the muffler. So I'm trying to figure out the best way to mount things for the NEXT version
Looking forward to the next video 👍🏼
Thanks! It was so much fun getting to play with stainless and I'm already thinking about how I can make it better
But first...fuel injection!
Are you going with Ted Brown F I kit?@@AutoAnatomy
How’s life?,you did superb drone! till next time-:)
Thank you!
Try a resonator tip. You will be surprised.
Make sure to check out the new video on the fuel injection, as the beginning is an update on the exhaust system.
Great video Sir, Question did i hear you say you were going to fuel injection and if so what system you going with, Curious did you think about sound deadener to quite down corvair, thks
Yes, I am making my own fuel injection system for the car (not based on someone else's system). Been working on it for around a year now, so hopefully it works!
Funny you should mention it, as I JUST ordered some sound deadener mats for the car yesterday. That will be in an upcoming video.
Sounds great will be looking for sound deadener video , looking for ideas on my 2, 65 Corvairs , thks
You'll wish that you had installed a flex section in the piping.
Why is that? Everything is attached to the engine cradle and moves as a unit
@@AutoAnatomy Expansion/contractionfrom heat cycling of the exhaust system, along with vibration, will cause cracking in the pipes - typically along the weld joints.
I love it. Question, what is with the rubber plugs on the ends of the exhaust when you’re welding?
Stainless needs to be surrounded on both sides with argon when welding, to prevent contamination. Those plugs allow me to back-purge the system with argon.
@@AutoAnatomy interesting I never knew that.
Hello, Do you have a link to the muffler that you used?
Here is an affiliate link:

Ha! Kinda looks like one!
I like the new exhaust better, I had the old exhaust on my Corsa years ago, to me the old or trumpet style sounds to much like a VW bug.
Thank you so much! It's definitely a different sound from what we had. Time will tell if we keep it as-is, or change it again.
But would you do it again?
Absolutely! I mean...when it's time for a turbo I'll have to build it all over again!
I have restored 4 Corvairs and (IMHO) at the end of the day what the car needs is a 5th gear Overdrive
Amen. I’ve seen some modify a T5 and hope that in the future there will be a viable option
What should I do about the noise? New muffler? Turbo? What tailpipe? Let me know below!
I'm a fan of a good sounding car. You corvair is a bit too raspy for my taste. A turbo muffler is maybe a bit more pleasant sounding.
I doubt it would create much restriction since most are designed for V8s double the displacement
Fun fact. The turbo muffler was originally designed for the Corvair Turbo Spyder
Hence the name
@sneff1052 Yeah, I’m in agreement. Probably changing to a different muffler already
Turbocharger
I would try a Helmholz resonator, if it can be fit under there. Something like this. Seems like even a little extra pipe with a dead end will work wonders. th-cam.com/video/l9CrmkIxDQU/w-d-xo.html
If you would tune it to 130 Hz, it should also do something at 260 Hz.
Looks like alot of restrictions
How so?
@@AutoAnatomy so many bends. I stand to be corrected
New
Thanks, I agree!
