    My dad had two when I was a kid and when I got my license in 1999 I bought his 79 scout II back from a neighbor and spent 4 years with my dad restoring it, ended up buying 5 in total to build mine back to factory perfect. The most bad ass 4x4 in history. But they do rust bad. Mine burned up in my garage in a house fire in 2008 and the insurance money was no where near what it cost to replace it.the memories are priceless, glad to see so many people bringing them back.

    Sabbath ring tone! Glancy is the real deal. Sean Barber knows his stuff. These men live and love what they talk about. Light Line Distributers have really saved our history. The story behind my history with my 80 is years of dreams, learnings, thrills and challenges, time with family and friends and the places we went together could never be for sale.

    Im a latino guy-- own my 1971 8 cylinder automatic- 800 B----for 5 years now --- I was a bodyman in the 70 and 80 for around 10 years and I have used my experience beautifying it ( and for free practically) wich was in perfect shape rust was almost cero the bottom where you put the feets are intact
    But Im selfish about my scout I really believe that anything else is just a car ! !
    Im in love but crazylly in love with my scout I'll never sale it ( the only love affair that has gone perfec for me )
    I'll die with it because the scout give me life something so special incredible feeling to own it to see it there --and everybody who sees it they just go Wooooowwwwww
    When I turn the engine on --- it roars like a lyon sounds like a monster everybody loves it and go crazy
    specially when the find out they sound came from the scout ! ! I magine them feeling horrible no to have one --
    Nothing in the world souds like it ---
    The 71 scout 800- B-- is a model from the 60 S------- and they stoped this model right there in 71

    Great show! Too bad Navistar didn't also include the original sheet metal dies when they sold the Light Line parts.

    Did a fair amount of business with Giddem Up Scout back in the 80's when I was building up my 68/800 and 77 Scout's. Rod always treated me fairly and Jim Cash in North Denver as well. Met John Glancy when he stopped by one day when I was working for High Country Performance 4x4 in Englewood, CO, was just getting started. He also was good to do business with. Put a lot of time and money into these Scout's and loved almost every minute of it. Wish I had never sold them. They were awesome on and off road.

    Awesome video, thank you both for keeping these amazing vehicles going. I have a 72 that I just bought back and I am so damn excited to get after it. You guys have expanded so much in the passed 10 years making this rebuild so much easier to do!!

    Went to work for IH’s credit company in 1979 and we would drive new Scouts for 20,000 miles and then turn them back in for another new one. Our wedding photos from that year prominently feature the orange rally stripe one I was driving then. Still kick myself to this day for not purchasing my last one, a Black Shadow version. It would be worth a lot of money today! IH was going broke and they put us in some of the very first Chrysler K cars for company vehicles after we turned in our last Scouts. What a downer that was!

    I bought a 1979 Scout II that looked just like the cover photo on the 2nd Edition of this Encyclopedia. The quarter panels rusted in a couple of years. Had to sell it when I moved to Florida, since there was no air conditioning.

    I remember my Dad had one and have some great memories of Riding up the mountain on family land in places most vehicles would never go. Used to think we were going to flip and branches would be hitting us on all sides. Had a cool little seat in the back you could remove.

    My first 4x4 was a 1978 Scout. Green and White. 304 V-8 with 3 or 4 speed manual, can't remember which. Lots of great memories. Super fun to drive and very durable, except for the rust, of course!

    I still regret letting go of my International Scout II 1978. Well, it was not a perfect one. However, it was a very fun vehicle to drive. I live in L.A and I took it to Lake Tahoe few times. I have seen this video like 3 times. Very good conversation

    Scouts are Swiss Army knives compared to a Bronco or a Blazer.

    I miss my 73 it ended with a 258, 4 speed top loader, and a twin stick transfer case and 44’s front and back on 32” tires! It out pulled my 76 power wagon.

    There are a lot of things in the video I knew, but several things I didn't. Thank you for posting, this was a great interview. My Great Uncle worked for Schneider National. They had a discount deal with the Green Bay, WI International dealer. He bought a '78 Scout Traveler. It was white with a black top and full graphics, 4x4, 304, pretty good truck. But, it rusted, BAD! So, '81, he goes to the International dealer and tells them that his Scout is rusted out and can they help him? They gave him a great deal on a '80 Scout Traveler, like the trade plus $600, and the '80 was a loaded, showroom model, so it has the plaid interior, A/C, cruise, 727, 304, just beautiful. He kept it up with a few rust repairs and a repaint.
    Funny thing I found is yet another person talking about the turning radius. My Dad had a '78 Sount II. He would always tell me how tight it turned. So, I'm 17, and my Uncle lets me drive his Traveler. And the steering is the first thing I noticed. Loose as hell, but damn it could turn on a dime.
    Also, the '80 doesn't leak oil. Currently, it leaks a touch of tranny fluid. But, I'm shocked it doesn't leak oil.
    First time I took my girlfriend out on the Scout, with my Uncle's permission back then, she really liked it too.
    My Uncle passed away a few weeks ago, and he left me the truck. I really look forward to working on the Scout, and driving and enjoying it. I may have a few more International products like Farmalls and Travelalls.

    I remember the scout 80 had 152" slant 4 engine. The scout 800 had 152 and ( turbo opt), 198 slant 4, and 266" V8. The later model 800's also later opt'd 232" inline 6, and 304 V8. Scout 2's had 232" inline 6, 304 V8, 345 V8 and I've even seen one with a 392" V8. As I recall the inline 6 was sold because they didnt have enough V8's to go around. I had 4 Scouts including one Scout 80 Commanche, one Scout 800 Snow Fighter, Scout 2 Rally and one Scout Traveller, one Travelall, one 1210 series pickup.

    I still pine for my "lost" buddies. My 1979 IH SCOUT II named "WOODY" rubbed "TWEETY" when he was repainted ALL yellow.

    I’ve got a 67 and 74. Chose them over the Light built Jeep, chevys and fords I had decades ago. They may not win any races, but they’ll pull and climb all day with the right tires. By the way, love the ring tone, lol !

    Don’t know what made me click on this video, but I’m sure glad I did. This brought back many memories, pretty much grew up with our Scout from a little kid until I left to college. We had a Terra as a work truck on the ranch from ‘79 to the early 90’s. The boss got it new from the dealership, yellow with the white top, 2WD, V8 with the Automatic. That truck was tough, despite having a hard life on the ranch, it served us well till the early ‘90’s. I remember there was a lot of room behind the seat. Before the days of seatbelts we would stand behind the seat as kids on trips to town. I would love to get my hands on one to start a build.

    My oldest son, a toddler at the time he rode in my revived SCOUT II, actually WEPT when I told him I was forced to let it finally go. His reaction BROKE my heart ALL over again! I hope somewhere our old pal "WOODY" lives on?!!! Maybe I'll track him down some day and get his new owner to let me ride in him once more, one last time!

    Between my grandpa my dad and myself we have 13 scouts my grandpa still has his 75 scout he bought brand new and it still looks brand new

    A 5 year 100 k warranty for a farm implement. That's confidence pal. Going to Bronco club runs and shows with a sticker on my '63 saying "The first Ford Bronco" and original black and yellow Ca. License plates is totally sarcastic but deserving of the respect International farm implements have earned.

    Bought a 78 Scout in 84 and had the new quarters put on also.
    I did have it till 1992 They did have a rust problem but was a great Truck for me. Moved me from MN to WY, LA to CA.
    How many Scouts are left?

    Drove a '72 with a 345 from 1989-1992...got it used. No rust but the engine burned oil and the brake drums had been welded onto the wheels which screwed up the front end..If I hadn't been disabled I would have rebuilt the motor.

    Interesting vid👍unfortunately none IH Scout exists here in Australia, love history n now I be chasing the book for good read as I have IH tractors/combines books. We had Australian built AA160 for grain carting, as kid love International Fire truck with 308 V8.

    Body is so nice v8 auto ..I think auto ..haven't been able to check it out much yet frame looks wrong but it's amazingly rust free floors hold water.. it might even float

    I DEEPLY miss my 1979 IH SCOUT II, CUSTOM DELUXE!!! Never, ever had ANYTHING like it again, even though I did buy a 1987 GMC baby "JIMMY". The smaller sibling of the HUGE, FULL SIZED, big brother!

    What were the parts your having trouble with on the steering wheels? As for fenders and quarter panels you are only interested in steel right?

    Just got myself blessed with a v8 scout it is in great shape .. the floors are holding water lol
    Its complete but the springs and spring mounts have been messed with .. so I'll be trying to restore this truck maybe with some mods like a nice lift mod suspension for maybe crawling .. probably looking for a disk break conversation.. has all drums now .. what front and rears should I be looking for ..

    Gentlemen, Henry Ford in response to his critics of the day who wanted him to end production of the venerable, light weight but incredibly STRONG "MODEL T", in favor of a look larger, heavier vehicle said "What makes them think that being HEAVIER increases structural integrity or strength?" He was CORRECT of course but public opinion and his investors eventually won him over and the MODEL T was retired in favor of the larger, heavier "MODEL A".
    The REST is, of course, history.

    I'm looking at a 66 Scout 800. It's got rusty inner rocker panels. It's complete. There is no sheet metal patches for these trucks?

    In 1979 my SCOUT II CUSTOM DELUXE had ALL the luxury options. However, the weakness I was warned about was its CHRYSLER built, 3 speed, transmission.
    Otherwise? The vehicle was virtually "BULLET PROOF" dependable.

    Scout, during 1974 had no zinc content. Ordered and used steel from japan instead of US steel. Japan steel used here had no zinc and thr galv. dip tank was bunk!

    My 1979 suffered badly from body rust! We paid about 3 grand (AMURHICUN $'s FOLKS!!!) to rebuild and repaint it. Unfortunately NOT in the original "WOODY" sided paint scheme on the original YELLOW body.

    PS: Took a real, old, highly experienced, "grey haired" mechanic to revive mine after over a decade of dormancy In my garage to bring it back to life abdkeep it running and road worthy fir another decade of full service through TERRIBLE lower NYC area Winters in the late 1980's and early 1990's.
    PS: The RUSTING problem was NEVER locked until the auto/truck makers changed the formulation of their steel sheetmetal to be "rust resistant". Too late for the SCOUTS!
