- Hey all! We've got a new video series to introduce to you and it's all about cruisin' and talking Scouts! Join Sean as he cruises around in a 1963 Scout 80 that is all original with some light restoration! This is a type of video we haven't done before but it was too good of a Scout not to make one about. We hope you enjoy learning a little more about this beautiful 1963 Scout 80 and why we love 'em!

My Dad bought one in the teal color with white full top in 1964, w/ duel fuel tanks. I was given it as a new driver in the early '70s but really did not appreciate it or its significants at all. On the farm it would pull, in low range, anything you hooked it on to. I remember offroading with some buddies on a local park fire trail, weeds and grass up to the hood, and the throttle linkage broke off. We were able to max out the idle speed screw and high idle our way back out and home:)

I had a 69 800A with a 304 V8. Great truck, 4x4 with trac loc differentials.
Probably the best original SUV ever made. I don't know why people feel the need to mess them all up.
Bought a 64 scout 80 in high-school and it was my senior project to restore it. It's now still 15 yrs later my daily driver. All original took a long time but it looks like it did out of the factory. My pride and joy. They are really fun to drive and easy to work on.

Gorgeous machine. Love this one guys, so nice to see one like this. Cool seats, remind me of the little alpha buckets.
Your narration made me laugh because I have said the same things about my all original 61 scout 80 'this could never be a daily driver' but I say mine has a top speed of 40mph because anything faster than that feels dangerous. It's a great little car for driving around slowly and getting thumbs ups and waves from people as you go by.
...just bought a 62 80. All original, but wanted to upgrade the engine to go cruising in it over several states. What is your recommendation for that?

I bought my son his first car (truck) 63 80 half cab and really looking forward to building it with him and seeing him learn to work on it! Will definitely be looking for some replacement panels for it and would love to get ahold of a better top for it!!

Awesome video! I'm almost done with my wife's 65 scout 80. The only thing I changed was , went from a 152 to the 196. Can't wait to get it done. I call all my older rigs "300 foot truck's". You always need to be alert for at least 300 feet ahead. Ready to work the brakes and steering. They are not as responsive as the new one we have today! Thanks again for the video!

I had one and it had the sliding door windows, I was always told it was a 1962. But this one has roll up windows. What years had sliding windows?
That's awesome, red & white '63 model 80, and seeing another Barber in the driver seat. Absolutely awesome! It's funny that it's easier to get parts now than it was in 2000 when I started mine. Internet and all. Without "Scouts West" and "Anything Scout" I certainly wouldn't be as capable as I am today. A great journey leaving lasting memories and stories. Oh boy, the stories from Tulare. Anything can be a daily driver if you stick a 3.08 rear in it.

Dad had a 1961 pick-up version we used on the farm. Later, he switched to a travel top, which leaked like crazy. During my college days, I had it restored, repainted, and drove it nearly every day. Then it was passed down to my younger brother. We had some fun times driving in muddy cornfields! Sigh!
I'd like to know the asking price for the 80. I'm 80-90% with my 69 800A travel top. That's a beautiful 80. I really like what these guys do
I had a 1962 tan color scout 80 when I was in college back in 72-74, my first vehicle. used to carry my drum kit in the rear to play weekend gigs in Vermont. Thanks for posting this video, brings back lots of memories for me.

Gotta love all original! 😁 I'm pretty sure we didn't get them over here in Europe but they seem very similar to the Land Rovers of the same era.
love my 62, but it is getting a chassis swap to make it more driveable
...I just bought a 62 80. Please explain what you mean? I'd like to get mine to where I can drive it across state lines at a distance.
@@seanmiller8014 I took the body of the scout off of the scout frame and put it on a 2000 S10 Blazer frame and drivetrain

I used to have one. They are really cool. As you mentioned, they have limitations, and there's no need to try and push them beyond that.
...why did you get rid of it?
I know they are heavy but could the 152 4 cylinder be swapped out for a 345 or 392 V-8 International engine in a Scout 80?

I got one recently from my step dad, we are gunna put a ford 9inch rear and Dana 44 front on leaf springs and a built 351 Windsor engine. It will be awesome

My dad had a aqua blue ‘66. Used to take us to the Beach on Sunday. Told me it wouldn’t go faster than 65mph.

Thank you for the inspiring video! Please confirm you only replaced leaf spring bushings and added those 31's to achieve this stance. What is the width on those 31's? I have a 61 Scout pick up here in So CA and would like to replicate this look. Thank you guy again.

Mine is a 64 , bought it at an auction for original owner , with 16000 original miles, love the thing .
I had read somewhere in market 1961 with the first Scout off the production line in 1960

Believe it or not there was a factory turbo option on those
At age 16 I learned to drive on my family's '64 Scout 80 4X4. A wonderful truck. Your truck is not stock, however. The tires are way too big.. And the wheels on the all wheel drive models were 16", not 15". Seats are not correct.
Horsepower of the 152 Commanche was 93.
16 inch tires were an option. 15s were standard.
@@justinstearns9723 15" were standard on 2-wheel drive. 16" were standard on All-Wheel Drive.

...I just bought a 62 80. Any insight you can offer? Where's the furthest you've ever driven it? Do you still have the original engine in and it's parts?
@@seanmiller8014 everything is original, I’ve updated to an electronic kit for my distributor and electronic fuel pump. It’s starts right up. I drive it around town with a top speed of 55.

I have a 1961 Scout 80, has an UTEMCO PTO, Hydraulic Pump with an UTEMCO Snow plow and three point hitch. I removed the Dana 27 axles and replaced then with a Dana 30 in front and a Dana 44 in the rear. I removed the .152 and replaced it with a .196. It has sliding windows, twin stick Dana 18, 2 gun racks in the travel top, and a front bench seat. Vacuum wipers are also a pain in the behind sometimes.
...I just bought a 62 80 and was looking to upgrade mine so I can drive it a distance to other states. Any recommendations? Thanks.
@@seanmiller8014 that 152 4cyl is a bite in the ass. My 1961 Scout tops out at 65mph anymore and its a screamer. I also cant maintain 65mph on anything but flat land and downhills. If you dont have any PTO equipment you can buy an overdrive unit for the Dana 18 transfer case. That will give you a .25 gear reduction so you can make your 3 speed technically a 6 speed because you can have a low 1st, low reverse and a gear between 2nd and 3rd and after third. I have one on my 1957 Willy's Pickup and its a game changer. My pickup couldnt top 65mph either since it had 4.88 gears. Now I can cruise 80 mph. Another thing is you can change out your gears. I havent done it to Dana 27s as I removed mine but you can go down to a 3.73 or 3.92 gear ratios which will give you a better highway speed but is expensive. This is why I changed up for a Dana 30 and Dana 44. Another option is switching out your 152 for a 196 4 cylinder engine. It is a direct bolt it and has plenty more power in it. My 1966 USMC Scout 800 cruises 75~80mph no issues with nothing done to it. I would also advise a conversion to front disc brakes if you arent familiar with 4 wheel drum brakes. My 1961 still has 4 wheel drum but I have a proportioning valve and a dual piston master cylinder to boost my braking ability. I did the same to my 1966 Scout. Check your fluids often and keep everything greased as well as possible. My 1961 has a hydraulic clutch which was dropped half way through 1962. The rest of the Scouts until 1971 had mechanical clutches and these linkages need to be greased. I also reccommend changing out your stock vacuum wipers for an electric conversion. The vacuum wipers draw a vacuum from the fuel pump. Problem is that when you drive that faster you go the less of a vacuum is pulled meaning your wipers go very slow. So in a hard rain going fast when you need those wipers you wont have them which I have personally experienced and it sucks.

Swap in a 245and a automatic trans into 80
...please explain that to a novice of a 62 80. Would like to drive mine at a distance to other states. Any other recommendations to make that happen?
@seanmiller8014 you could sway in a Chevy LS engine with a overdrive transmission or you can talk to Ben at the 406 garage in bend Oregon he has several of the series 80 scouts as well as other scouts to

...were you happy with the rebuild? What did you have done? I just bought a 62 80 and looking to do some rebuild/upgrades myself.

My 66 bronco was a similar top speed. I had to remind myself that it wasn't that slow, life was just that fast in '66. Lol
