Love the echoes in the shop class atmosphere..and lack of disturbingly loud background music .. when I look to learn I look for the good old boy over 55yo who not only owns what I'm looking to learn about but has lived its lifetime .. as I have .. well maybe not sure the year I have yet.. 69 is as far back as I go .. lol

I've always wondered about the leadership at IH, they sold off divisions like Cub Cadet, their Construction/Industrial equipment group and discontinued both the light duty pickups and the Scout at a time when the market for those products was blossoming. I suppose it comes down to capital and either they didn't have enough or didn't use it wisely. Still have to wonder why after the war they didn't get into a marketing agreement with Nash, Kaiser Frazer or Packard to put IH light trucks in those Dealers even if they were badge engineered and sold with different power trains and styling this would of given them more volume to amortize costs over. As the 60's rolled around again could they of reached out across the ocean and found compact/light duty vehicles to import and market through their dealer network from either Japan or Europe (read Germany or Sweden). What would of we thought about the Scout if it was nothing more than a re-styled Toyota Land Cruiser or Nissan Patrol? The Scout Terra if I remember was not that much different in size than what the Ford Ranger, Chevrolet S10 and Dodge Dakota all became good sellers for their respective companies. The RV market came into being in the mid to late 60's, yet we don't see a lot of Motorhomes from that era on IH chassis yet they were doing a brisk trade in school buses. I suppose it all comes down to IH management being somewhat inbreed and leadership that didn't set goals or think outside the box. We can commiserate about the loss of IH tractors and farm equipment but they lost their leadership in that market in the mid 50's and even though they had some successful innovations later on but they were to little to late to really make a difference. From the end of WW II we saw a trend of fewer, larger farms we probably should of assumed that that would lead to fewer and larger equipment companies.

If the scout/light line was a re branded machine, it would definitely not have the following, nor the sales.
Kaiser/nash/packard did have some trucks(kinda), and well alot seen their demise coming from a mile away.
There is a big difference between a bus and a motorhome.
Also remember that IH didn't have small dealers, their dealers were heavy equipment dealers, which helped and hurt. helped as they sold to everyone who had IH equipment, hurt as the city people didn't want to go to the "dirty big equipment dealership" Also IH made more on big equipment than their light lines.

@@J-1410 One of our local IH dealers was Dualed with the Oldsmobile dealer selling Oldsmobile, IH trucks and IH farm equipment. The Chevy dealer in town was dueled with Allis Chalmers Farm Equipment, the Ford dealer in town also sold Ford Tractors. Ih sold of some divisions in an attempt to raise cash, others were closed because they weren't profitable and didn't have enough value to be worth selling. The Scout was a response to the Jeep which also caused Ford to come out with the Bronco. Surely AMC or Mopar could of dueled with IHC on trucks and SUVs even if it was a different engines, transmissions and trim level sharing.

@@fk4515 Because AMC and Dodge are what one thinks of when you want to buy a quality, dependable, durable, pickup(Ha!). No one thought that during the 70s of Dodge and AMC, look at the Ford and GM advertising, they never mention Chrysler or AMC. Also IHC was in talks with FORD to sell Diesel engines to FORD for their FORD trucks. How well would that have gone?
"Yeah buy our engines a we sell your pathetic competitor's vehicles who in the end won't even use our engines"
It would have been a depressing, low quality end to the IHC light line. The fact the IHC even did a study on Dodge is surprising. No one wants a rebadged thing, look at the dodge neon. Word would have traveled fast: The New IHC pickups are those rebranded number 3 or 4 Dodge trucks that no one exactly likes and for good reason. IHC would have lost its name for quality, dependable, durable, pickups and gained the Chrysler reputation of cheap, mechanically incompetent, and poor quality.
Also how would that work? One IH dealer around here was a GM dealer, another a FORD dealer. "Here possibly void your current contract and sell the unpopular DODGE truck line"

@@J-1410 I work at Winnebago Industries there are a few busses wandering around on motorhome chassis, I know this because we made them. We used to have a Bus division but we sold it off a few years ago, about the same time we bought a couple of other RV manufacturers but before we started buying boat companies

if it has a 4cyl scout motor doesn't have a timing chain it's gear to gear

The Scout 80 model (1961-1965) could be ordered with either a full travel top or a cab top and bulkhead to make a mini-pickup. The IH 152 4-cylinder and T-90 3 speed manual were the only power train options for that model run. As Mark stated, the IH 4 and 8 cylinder engines had timing gears rather than chains. The Red Carpet Special was a "doll up" option to celebrate the 100,000th Scout off the line. There were only 3000 RCS Scouts produced, so if yours is a genuine RCS that you could prove through a Line Setting ticket, you would have a pretty rare little gem in your possession.

If these guys had more polished public speaking chops, this video would be about 40 minutes long. But they do lay claim to one of the greatest brain trusts regarding the history of the IH Scout, so I'll cut 'em some slack on that one.
