This is an edited and condensed version of a longer video.
All music, monologue, and commentary have been removed from this video.
The original version of this video can be found on my channel.
In Today's project, I will make one of many planned improvements to my lathe.
I'll begin these improvements by focusing on one of the parts of the lathe that you interact with the most, the Tool Post.
Even a quick change tool post needs to be moved frequently to accommodate different tool geometry, odd features, etc.
The normal method for doing this is to grab a wrench, use that wrench to loosen the retaining nut, then move the tool post, use the wrench to tighten the nut, and then put the wrench away.
Today, we will cut out all of those steps and create a retaining cap, and handle that can be quickly loosened and tightened by hand.
And thanks to the inclusion of a thrust washer, very little force is needed to loosen or tighten the new tool post handle.
The material used for this job will be 304 stainless steel.
Machines used will be the metal lathe, and the milling machine.
Operations will include; turning, facing, drilling, boring, tapping, threading, and milling.
My Lathe: MSC / Prince 9517350 - 13x40 Manual Metal Lathe
My Milling Machine: Bridgeport Variable Speed Series 1 "J Head"
My other Milling Machine: Brown & Sharpe No. 2 Plain "light type" Universal Milling Machine

I know you appreciate hearing this stuff... I like what you did with the editing at the 15 degree taper. I'm still struggling building my machine shop at my new home when I have no experience. I only wanted a small lathe and bought the whole shop..... its a lot to learn. This stuffs extremely helpful to me. Mahalo Nui!

Thanks very much, I really do appreciate hearing these comments. When I started this channel, the whole reason was to share and connect with other people out there like me, trying to learn and just wanting to spend time making things. I remember many evenings when I was just getting started where I would spend hours out in my shop with no real direction or plan, just cutting metal into chips so I could be doing "something" on my machines. That's part of the reason I'm always trying to provide projects and drawings in my videos. To give people something that they can do "right now" in the shop. Thanks again!

Keith from Michigan. What I really liked, I like that primary insert you. Especially it has a 6 sided turning insert. Your locking handle, well done

@@smashke thanks very much, those vids are definitely the “main” video style. But I like to do these edits when I have the chance because some folks like them for background noise type of thing I think. 🙂 thanks again, and thank you for taking the time to watch!

Dobra robota.

Excellent! One detail I might have missed is determining the handle location. I assume you assembled, marked comfortable location and then drill, correct?

    • @hersch_tool
      @hersch_tool  10 วันที่ผ่านมา

Thanks very much. I explained it in the full length version of this vid with commentary, you can find it on my channel if you want to give it a watch. But the short version is, I made the spacer tall enough that it can be used to adjust the handle location to wherever is most comfortable. It's future proof that way as well, if ever I change the tool holder for any reason, (to use the 4 way for rigidity etc.), the spacer can be changed to adjust the handle position if necessary. Thanks for watching btw!

Thanks very much. I use my phone to record and edit in FCP. I can't remember the brand of my mic but it's an older wireless lav with obnoxiously oversized transmitter and receiver units that I'm constantly having to manage. (I really need to get one of the newer wireless mics) Thanks very much for watching btw!
