  • Here's a bit of a different take on 'Just Got Lucky' with Jeff taking over the lead vocal. I was really surprised at how good this was!

    If Pilson had been a lead singer for 30-40 years of touring, I wonder if his voice would still be as great as it is. Let's be fair to Don Dokken. He also had vocal surgery. Don was one of the best metal vocalists ever.

    Don is actually playing bass in the video. The performance comes from the One Live Night album from 1996. Both Jeff and Mick do a couple of lead vocals during the concert. Mick sings Tooth & Nail, and both sing It's Not Love. If you can find the whole thing, check it out. It's pretty good stuff!

Yes, you are again really on it when describing and giving your analysis of Jeff as a singer and player, and just overall quality performance. Jeff does get a dbl thumbs up from me as well!👍👍 Jeff has recently impressed me on his pure love of music, almost "schooled" if you will, his interview that he gave about his love for singing and playing pop music way before Dokken. I grew up in the 80s, and I STILL can't figure out why Dokken never became a headlining band. Don was in the upper 10%-20% of 80's metal singers, and George was/is considered to be one of the best metal guitarists. Plus they were good songwriters. Christ, Dokken put out better songs than Motley f**king Crüe did! So, what gives? Why is Motley Crüe able to pull off big $$$$ stadium tours, as if they ever put out more than a few decent songs?

    Back when Dokken disbanded and George created Lynch Mob, the media buzz was constantly planting seeds for Jeff to play bass and take on the vocal duties as well. But whenever Jeff was presented the temptation of consideration, he always had a reason for not stepping into a permanent, lead vocalist role. Seeing this video now, the truth is this: We know what Dokken sounds like with Don, and it was great, but imagine if we'd never heard Don's voice and came to know only Jeff's? It changes everything, doesn't it? Would "Pilson" have been less successful? The world will never know. Make no mistake, many successful groups have talented backing vocalists in them (Michael Anthony - Van Halen) and it's because of that combination and chemistry that those great songs became the songs we know and love so I'm a bit disinclined to think that any singer should've been cast aside during any group's rise to success. It's not about who's better when truthfully, it's how they work together.

    You should check out the Lynch/Pilson record (Wicked Underground) for more of Jeff's lead vocals, and/or the tracks on T&N that Jeff sings lead on (there are also guest vocals from Dug Pinnick, Robert Mason, and Ripper Owens).

    I saw Dokken at a small club back in the late 90's. Don was so drunk he couldn't even finish the show. He sang like 4 songs then Jeff took over and actually did this song and it was amazing. Don switched to bass after complaining about the lights being too bright and the music was too loud for a small crowd. After about 6 songs the lights went out and the band took like a 20 min break then the band returned without Don and did the two instrumentals they do. The band was tight and awesome to see except for Don. It was a mixed reaction to a band I loved as a teen in the 80's. I paid as much to see them as I did to see an outside show with Cheap Trick, Alice Cooper and the Scorpions and to get a too drunk Don Dokken was a real let down, but at least I got to see George live who just killed it!

I've seen so many bands, not just once, but many times. I've seen "rockstar" attitudes here and there but mostly the stars of the 80s were just like you and me off the stage. If you ever were in sunset sound... They had a basketball hoop up inside the little courtyard to blow off steam between sessions. (beat Quincy Jones, and a few of my buddies in a game of horse while mixing their album haha, Quincy was in another studio with Barbara Streisand)
    Anyway, I got a lot of stories, its not about how lucky I was, its that I've been up close with many hairband artists. I've never been so embarrassed for someone as I was when I saw Don berate the sound guy at the coach house then go on to crackle while trying to hit notes. That's why I was so harsh in my previous comment. (Phil is super nice, a lot nicer than I lol....Thanks Phil for doing these* reaction vids.

    I saw this clip for the first time about a year ago, and I had no idea that Jeff could sing this well until then. Someone else↓ mentioned that Mick sang a song here as well, and I'll try to find that as well. Jeff's voice was pretty close to being as good as Don's! Sure, he's not top .0001% world-class vocalist like Dave Mustaine or Fred Durst, but then again, who is?? {😁} ←{Disclaimer: For anyone who considers taking that last sentence seriously, I'll refer you to the laugh emoji}

    Love your videos, Fil! I have a suggestion, you should do a video on Free, Mr Big live on the Granada tv show. It’s a great song, great band, and amazing performance, especially the guitar solo and bass solo!

    Not sure if you knew or not, Jeff and George wrote this song. Jeff demoed it for George and they finished the song. There is a Tooth and Nail album session version with Jeff on the vocals. Don’t be diplomatic. Jeff has a more blues based voice and that’s where this song came from. Great video!

    I've always held Jeff in high regard as a bass player. High energy guy. I liked Don's voice years ago but he's not that great now. This is great! I knew Jeff could sing but this is top shelf. He does a great job on ' Into the Fire' as well.

      Edited because: I found Ryche playing LA, but not w/ George in any capacity. Todd La Torre is singing (which is fine- he seems to have the vocal range Geoff had in the 80s), but no Lynch and no DeGarmo? I also found Dokken shows, but SSDD: no George.

    I'm a huge Dokken fan, and an even bigger Lynch fan. Jeff is a killer vocalist. His BG vox are always on and they blend so well with Don's voice. Even Mick is underrated for his BG vox. To me thats what separates a good band from a great band...the ability to sing harmonies with each other and kill it. Queen, Extreme, Van Halen to an extent....great stuff. Fil, how about your take on Extreme live video at the Freddy Mercury benefit in 92"? I apologize if you've done that one already. Cheers and keep em' coming. \m/ \m/

    Me toco verlos un par de veces , la ultima fue en el festival Mosters of rock en Texas , Don Dokken se le escuchaba su voz cansada pero Jeff Pilson remplazaba por momentos esa gran voz , no digo que Dokken estuviera mal pero empezo cantando a mediados de los 70s y ayudo a los Scorpiones a grabar algunas pistas de su album Blackout mientras Klaus Meine era operado de sus cuerdas vocales.
    Una gran voz Don Dokken !

    ya, pilson does sound like don, and he is very clear and sounding great, very impressed, does sound close to the original, harmonies are very good, for live and acoustical this is very impressive. ya i noticed it too, george did the solo a lil different than the original, which i liked better, those few added notes were great. good to see george smile. rock.

    If only they wouldn't of listened to outside influences. If they would have just stuck to the music and left the whole "look" thing out of it, they would have been so much bigger. I know George said something to that regard in an interview once.

    Jeff is an awesome singer! Always has been. The same with another favorite band of mine from the 80’s, Stryper. Michael Sweet is a killer singer, but Oz Fox is every bit as good, better in some ways in my opinion. I remember seeing them when Michael left Stryper and Oz was doing lead vocals as well as guitar and it was awesome! Oz can still sing! Cool video. Thanks man!

      TheAxe4Ever I think, with Oz... he has a more "pleasant" sounding voice and, it comes across so much better. With Pilson, here, Don was losing his voice and was not well liked.. But, I can't believe how great Pilson sounds... him and Brown really had great harmonies.

    • @TheAxe4Ever
      @TheAxe4Ever 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      T Crane Yeah. Don was really losing it around this time, which is a shame because at one point, Don had a great voice. Kind of a soulful voice. And you’re right, Jeff and Micks background vocals were awesome. Right up there with Michael Anthony in VH.

    Pilson is just a damn good musician overall. The fact that he can write and sing as well are most definitely factors that have helped him stay busy in the music business for decades.
    It's kind of funny that the bassist is the better singer in the band. Did you know that former Yngwie Malmsteen voalist Mark Boals played bass in Dokken for a while? That guy can sing rings around Don Dokken!

    This is a very interesting review. You make some very valid points about Jeff’s singing in this performance. Jeff Pilson has always had a good voice and there’s no doubt about that but what one has to remember is that Don Dokken’s voice is quite unique. If you listen to any number of the 80’s Metal bands you can find many similar styles prevalent with many singers. Once you’ve heard Dokken then there’s no mistaking it’s them. Criticism in many other comments below about Don’s vocals today are a little unfair and don’t take into account that he’s older and that age naturally affects a singers voice. Just take Whitesnake’s David Coverdale. Neither singer can hit the high notes anymore. If Dokken had been ‘Pilson’, I am certain they would have been exiled to obscurity long ago.

    • @wingsofpegasus
      @wingsofpegasus  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah age is a nightmare all around! There's a reason Jeff is always hired!

    I think these live take and to me is sometimes cutting back makes the song and vocals stand out. But it is down to how good the song is. If this was a song with strong vocal fast power and pace cutting back would not work.
