Even now, when his voice is lower and a lot rougher, Perry still has that same phrasing and tone that tells you instantly, "That's Steve Perry".

Have a listen to some of the backing tracks, Steve hits some pretty sound notes. He does the same in the last two songs with the EELS in LA in 2014.

Steve Perry's voice is actually electrifying. The band was tight and great all together but Steve sends that song into the stratosphere with his vocals. And notice that there are no special visual effects. I love The Who but why they needed the lasers I never knew. Also the interaction (or seeming to) by going down that catwalk into the heart of the audience just makes this performance so deeply personal and even more electrifying. ⚡

I get chills when I hear Steve Perry’s voice. He is so flawless and his emotion when he sings, can make one cry. His voice is that beautiful and amazing!!!!!! He is truly “The Voice”!!!! The most FANTASTIC front man ever. Freddie Mercury would come in as number 2.

I absolutely LOVE this song & have since hearing in 81' Fil you'll love Neal's solo during this song & Johnathon Cain's piano solo at the end!! Make sure to watch the 7 minute live video

What a performance. I am so glad that you are here to celebrate and call attention to such greatness. Steve Perry is like Bobby Hatfield in that his gift (or whatever you want to call it, other worldly talent) sits lightly on his shoulders, just like breathing, they think nothing of it. Perhaps they just want us to think so. Whatever the case, I for one can only stand in awe of such talent and be glad that you are here to explain why it affects us the way it does. Love what you do, so glad I found your channel! Thank you Professor!

I first saw Journey in a small college gym when Gregg Rolie was still the lead singer, and they were going for a heavy rock sound. They were unfortunately booked between the Winters Brothers Band and Charlie Daniels, two southern rock acts. It was a very bad idea. Journey was literally booed off the stage. A couple years later, I went to see them again in another small college gym, this time after their first album with Steve Perry. A different outcome, indeed - the crowd refused to leave. The house lights actually came up, but went back down again for one last song, a FOURTH encore! It was a true encore, the only one I've ever witnessed. I'll never forget it...Steve Perry walked out and said to the crowd, "You people are f------ nuts. But we're even more nuts, so here we go again!" Then they broke into Wheel In the Sky. It was obvious that night that the Steve Perry era was going to go a lot better than the band's first endeavors.

This is such a great performance of this song. Steve was amazing. One thing I always notice about Steve performing live is that he may move around the stage and interact with the crowd, but - when he gets to a part of the song that is a stretch or that he wants to emphasize, he stops moving and gets himself in almost perfect posture so that he can breathe as he wishes and needs to in order to achieve the desires effect. Just a great rock n roll singer.

I was so very lucky to see this show in Columbia, South Carolina. Bryan Adams opened for them. He was great as well! Then came the Frontiers Tour . . . Ahhhhh! Same venue, same great everything! And finally, the Raised on Radio tour. Seeing Randy Jackson on bass was odd because it was Valory’s spot for years but still very cool to see him years later “Dawg” on Idol.
Three of the best rock Tours that I have ever experienced in my life . . . hands down! 👍🏼👍🏼

So great! I remember moving to San Fransisco from New Jersey in 1979 and being taken to a journey concert a few months before Steve Perry became the lead singer. I had no idea who Journey was and my new northern Cali friends had no idea who Bruce Springsteen was. In the next few years all would be revealed as both rock identities became rock legends. A jersey shore girl at heart which makes one a Bruce fan by state association I admit that Steve Perry’s voice and Journey has a pull and talent that takes them one notch above ... sorry Asbury Park but honestly Steve’s voice is hard to beat, and I love that both Journey and Bruce Springsteen and the East Street Band both sing about growing up in their respective cities. Love your analysis. I agree that, as a countertenor, Steve's range was naturally higher than most. But hitting high notes was not his greatness; it was all about technique and feeling. Mastery of the mixed voice, long legato phrases and so much feeling that Steve could have told the story without words. Not just luck or a freak of nature, but hard work got him there. Live performances were always perfect, better than in the studio. For me, he is the GOAT.

When I was taking voice lessons I spent probably a year just learning how to breathe. Imaging having to "learn" something you've done every moment of your life since you were born! I only wish I had learned it before singing for years and wrecking my voice due to bad technique.

So glad you finally mentioned Valory and Smith towards the end of your excellent assessment. The drum lick line that Smith plays throughout is a great example of how a drummer can play notes to compliment the melody of the song. Smith asked himself "how do I make the song better" while Perry Schon and Cain did their own thing.

Beside music, I have a background with PT and Anatomy. So taking my years of voice I always questioned the positions to take while singing. The mouth and going inside I agreed. But as years passed I thought it needs to be progressive and Steve Perry is one that proved my point. Such a beautiful, relaxed and clear voice. He took his own body position for his inside make. Always tilting his head to the right while slightly raising his shoulder too. People have different body makeups so as to their singing it might be different too. Love ❤️ Journey
