Woah I am super early, thank you for making this I love Matilda and it was my first musical I ever performed in so it has a special place in my heart!!
YES!!! Finally!! i was so glad that people like me were represented more clearly especially in musical form! the "Quiet" song, *which im realizing you didn't listened to yet but highly recommend*, is the closest ive ever been able to explain why it was so hard to tell the truth about home life and how its easy to just close your eyes and float away to a imaginary land where your safs
Bare in mind when Miss Honey sings about the monsters, she's not just talking about a horrible boss, she's singing about the woman who murdered her father and stole her home 😭
Also worth remembering that Trunchbull was very big on sports as a past Olympic Hammer Thrower (also related to the hammer reference in Revolting), so there would probably be more of an expectation for the kids to all have sports equipment!
tbh the book addresses Why the parents don't pull the kids out of school very well and its not said outright in the movie or musical but is still true, the Trunchbull is so cartoonishly evil when she does anything to the children that if a kid told a parent what she did theyd think it was a child exaggerating, if she just shouted at you itd be believable, but calling you a maggot, going into a while ridiculous speech, locking you in a diy iron maidon, throwing people out windows, if you tell your parent that at age 6 they think you have a big imagination not that your head mistress whos always so kind and reasonable when you see her is satan
Please do another one of these! I highly recommend School Song, Quiet, My House, and either The Hammer or The Smell Of Rebellion. School Song is an ensemble number with all the kids, Quiet is one of Matilda’s songs, My House is sung by Miss Honey (the nice teacher) and the last two are both sung by the Trunchbull. Honestly, all the songs in this are amazing and Tim Minchin is a lyrical genius - he also did the musical of Groundhog Day (which is also brilliant) and has lots of his own music
Please PLEASE react to “The School Song” from this musical it’s so clever and just so musically clever Tim Minchin truly outdid himself writing the music for this musical
6:19 It’s a duel meaning. Revolting as in disgusting because that’s what Ms Trunchbull always says they are so they’re embracing it, and also “revolting” as in revolution.
I was part of a production of Matilda once and still remember some of the Revolting Children choreo. This whole musical has a very special place in my heart, I’ll always love it. I’m so glad you could find some joy in it as well
@@Aivi_xoxo It's absolutely hilarious that you decided that the former thing must have been referring to being British and not being a child. (If it was intentional, it was still funny)
Another commenter already talked about how the Trunchbull flies under the radar by being so ridiculous and absurd in her abuse of the kids that no adult believes them when they say their headmistress yeets a girl by the pigtails or forces a boy to eat an entire chocolate cake - though of course Matilda’s parents just don’t care. The more sobering real-life context is that Matilda’s story seems to be based on Roald Dahl’s experiences in a British boarding school as a child. He goes into it a bit in his autobiography, he was in a boarding school in the 20’s and faced horribly strict and abusive treatment from the teachers and older students there. Of course, that treatment was more normalized in that time, and unlike Matilda he had no way of fighting back. That’s why I feel like his books resonate so much with kids - he really understood the ways a kid can be made to feel powerless in a world of adults, and he allowed his child characters to take back control of their lives in such a cathartic way.
"When I Grow Up" begins with the children saying that they want to grow up so they can have the freedom to do whatever they want, play however they want, and eat whatever they want. When Miss Honney starts singing, we realize that when we grow up, we still won't have the freedom to do what we wanted to do as children, and priorities change, and fears remain the same. It shows that everyone at school was waiting for a miracle to happen so they could escape the Trunchbull dictatorship, that things would get better as they grew up. Matilda, however, doesn't sing "When I Grow Up." She sings a reprise of "Naughty." She has a sense of justice that is very strong from the beginning of the play, that if you don't do anything, nothing will change, and growing up won't do any good if you don't react. That's why she's the beginning of the revolution, because she doesn't wait for anything. She grew up being always wronged, and if she didn't take justice into her own hands, no one would do it for her. And that's it guys, best song, explains the whole movie.
The first video has the four Matilda's that played her (they had four because of children's labor laws, they needed multiple Matilda's cause she's a lead).
Maybe child labor laws was also a part of it but the director had stated in an interview that he had kids an did not want her being in the theater night after night. The kids in the production weren't allowed to stage door here in America which shows you how protective they were of the kids.
@@TeresaBenson yeah them not being in the theatre night after night is because of child labor laws. He was following the right thing to do and it's what all directors should do
Maybe should be added that it was the four at the time, not necessarily the only four, but yeah, that might go without saying ... Although sometimes one or two people might perform for the whole run of a musical sometimes, particularly if it's short lived... Ah well, probably not a big deal.
The first time I listened to School Song I didn’t get it at all. Then next time instead of just listening I watched the West End cast sticking the letters into the ‘school gates’ with each lyric and I finally got it. It really needs the visuals but when you get it, it’s SO clever!
When I Grow Up always makes me up, all the things kids dream about doing as an adult that most adults consider themselves “too grown up” to do, and then Ms Honey comes out and sings a verse as well to show even though she’s an adult she hasn’t got it all figured out either it’s just so sweet. And then the visuals of the adult versions of the kids running out onto the swings 😭
I watched the movie musical just recently and loved it to pieces! Happy to see some more Matilda Edit: The "weird" choreography you mentioned during "naughty" is because she climbs out her bedroom window up to the roof at this point! That's how she gets to her dad's hair tonic in secret :D
In the musical (where the choreo is from) she doesn't sneak out over the roof, she just sneaks through the corridor! They added the climbing over the roof for the movie
@@brooklynelm That's good to know! It made me think specifically of the roof scene because they looked like they were balancing on the edge, trying not to fall. Ya know? But I don't know what came first, that performance or the movie
@@marveludus The musical movie is actually fairly new (2022)! From my impressions of having seen the show a few times in London, it looks like she's trying to avoid attracting her parents attention by being careful about creaky floorboards, and sticking to the walls so they don't see her!
he also composed and wrote for groundhog day the musical which is incredible and something i think u should check out!! it uses repeating songs, motifs, and lyrics really well to convey the time loop
okay but you simply HAVE to watch more songs!!!! this musical has some insaneeeee songs and my personal favourite, Quiet, would amaze you with such a song in literally matilda the musical lmaoo
i actually sang a song from Matilda the Musical (it was Quiet :)) for my musical theatre singing exams last year and i always had a British accent when i sang it (im also australian)
The composer of the musical, Tim Minchin (an Australian comedian btw) did a documentary about this called Matilda & Me, which I absolutely loved and used to watch all the time, and in it he talks a bit about the meaning of 'When I Grow Up' and how it didn't really have a place in the narrative of the story, but kind of encompassed the overall meaning. I think he said it was a bit about the childlike wonder that you lose/forget with 'growing up'.
danny devito also played the father in the original, thats why he brought it up. because he was talking about the scene where the father gets his hair dyed blond
I’m an acting fan, I love seeing the little nuances or the ticks and moments that make acting an art. Some actors get 30+ mins of dialogue and do nothing with it, and some actors get 3 mins of no dialogue and sell completely. 17:51 Lashana Lynch has got one second and I didn’t even realize till now how much she SELLS Ms. honey. When they show the statue of Trunchball falling it pans to Ms. Honey and she flinches. it’s obvious you can tell that she is almost overwhelmed seeing the statue come down, like she still thinks they’re/ she is going to into trouble. One second and she sold it, I swear why Her and Alisha Weir weren’t nominated for more awards for this film I’ll never know.
The choreography around the swinging in When I Grow Up is mind boggling. With how quickly and seamlessly they had to switch out and get up and down. I am thoroughly impressed. Matthew...that thumbnail...why?
Miss Honey, the nice teacher, sings that line because she still doesn't believe she's brave enough to fight her own monsters (i.e. her abusive aunt Trunchbull) even now. And then it cuts to Matilda, who isn't even singing about growing up, shes singing her previous song about fairness and justice, because she has already had to grow up, very quickly, and IS brave enough to deal with the abusive people in her life already.
I didnt cry watching the netflix musical, but i was bawling when i saw this on Broadway years ago. I had just lost a pregnancy, and the childhood nostalgia was just insanely overwhelming. This is such a good show.

Song recommendations: . "Still holding my hand" from the matilda the musical movie. A sweet duet between Matilda and Miss honey . "My house" a miss honey song. Its really sad :(
It’s funny how Matilda from the Netflix went from this to being the little vampire girl in Abigail. She’s getting good acting range and experience in all genres of movie
When I grow up makes me cry because before going into middle school my choir sang that song to show that we where growing up. It makes me cry anytime I hear it
There's so many great songs left in this musical, I hope you check it out or watch the full movie (although if you watch the movie, listen to the song Loud separately bc it got cut despite being just a whole lot of fun)
Your take on when I grow up is so reassuring, because I'd heard the opposite for most of my life. And I was very frustrated because my situation wasn't great and I didn't want it to get worse, but that's not the case. Childhood doesn't have to be the peak of your life. I love watching your videos
When I Grow Up is one of my all time faves from the musical. (Honestly, the entire soundtrack slaps!) What I love about it is that the song is a perfect improv song to sing in your daily routine. I had an actual dream once where a family was depressed because of so many changes; the youngest kid decides to start singing that song and changed the lyrics to fit their situation. The rest of the family chimed in. It was beautiful and moving! 😊
God, the 2013 Tony awards was the best one I’ve ever seen. Everyone was at their best and they went all out. It was also an amazing year for musicals so there were so many good performances
When you do “Quiet” please do the movie version, the visuals there are just great (also as an autistic person that song is the most accurate depiction of overstimulation that I’ve seen in media)
it's so funny that he kept saying Chutney, cause that's what the wormwoods call miss Honey in the stage show. I also definitely recommend watching Loud and Telly, which are Matilda's parents' songs!!!
2:28 - oooOOoo a medley 2:33 - the- the Tony awards? Is that THE ONE? 2:35 - naughty? It could be THE ONE 2:37 - REVOLTING CHILDREN? It could DEFINITELY be THE ONE 2:38 - WHEN I GROW UP 🎉🎉🎉 ITS THE ONE 🎉🎉🎉 THE BEST 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Mat if you do another one I hope you include "School Song" (Maybe the film version is more visual with regards to the lyrics) but especially "Quiet" as from the very first listen, it has meant so much to me as someone who has an anxiety disorder and can be relatable to anyone who doesn't feel like they fit in, in every sense of the word.
I feel like people rarely mention "Quiet" among their favourite Matilda songs but, as someone who has always dealt with chaos and anxiety, it (particularly the movie version) makes me cry everytime I hear it 😭😭
If you want to do more Matilda, it would be fun to listen to Story 1-4 (Story 4 is also I’m Here) and then My House. Theyre not next to each other in the play but they do tell a different story than the rest of the play
YOU NEED TO DO ANOTHER ONE OF THESE PLEAAASSEEE OMG!!!! You DEFINITELY should listen to “this little girl” and “quiet” also, great video, keep up the great content and smiles!
There were 2 song in the musical that weren’t in the movie, telly and loud. Personally these were 2 of my favourite songs when my school performed the musical and I would love if you’d react to them!
This video was so good! I really recommend listening to more of the movie songs cause they really get the message across well. My favorites were Miracle and School Song! They’re cool scenes that would definitely confuse u lol
I felt so much nostalgia watching this! I was 13 when i first watched Matilda on stage, I learned all the songs! I’m 25 now and still listen to the original broadway soundtrack!
The day this video came out, audition information for Matilda the Musical at a community theater also came out! I’m hoping for Hortensia and my brother wants Bruce, fingers crossed!
Great video, I love Matilda so I obviously loved this vid :) I definitely think you should do more songs from this show, specifically Quiet and School song, they are two of my favs. 💛💛
The line that broke me the first time i ever heard When I Grow Up was "I'll spend all day just lying in the sun and I won't burn 'cause I'll be all grown up." The implication of children thinking adults are almost invincible and that once you grow up you can't get hurt anymore... More, please! lol Matilda's music is either really funny or just really heartwarming? If I had to recommend a few songs: Miracle (the opener, very funny), School Song, and Quiet (Matilda solo)
I am BEGGING you to do a part 2 and watch the broadway version of “Miracle” and the movie version of “Bruce”- they are by far my favorite songs from each!
Journey to Bethlehem is another movie musical with ridiculously good music. The songs are so incredibly good. I would love to see your reaction to the songs one day.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do another!! You missed some of the best songs. You need to listen to Quiet and School Song! Quiet is a beautiful, thought provoking, and pretty sad song and it’s sung by Matilda when she finally snaps and finds her power. School Song is one of the best written songs ever. I won’t spoil what makes it so cool because the reveal blew me away but it’s just amazing and I highly recommend watching the movie version of that song because the reveal is done way better there than it could possibly be done on stage.
BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ONE! I played Miss Honey in my college production of Matilda: The Musical and the song “My House” always made me tear up whenever I sang it😭
Don’t worry Matthew. I watched this musical live at the west end around a decade ago and have listened to the songs plenty of times since. I only just realised the double meaning of Revolting when you mentioned it. I don’t think I would ever have realised it otherwise either.

God, the 2013 Tony awards was the best one I’ve ever seen. Everyone was at their best and they went all out. It was also an amazing year for musicals so there were so many good performances
Matthew being so worried about the abuse of these fictional children that he cant really focus on the songs is so wholesome lol
When you do “Quiet” please do the movie version, the visuals there are just great (also as an autistic person that song is the most accurate depiction of overstimulation that I’ve seen in media)
noooo the movie version is so much worse than the stage one
The movie version made me tear up it was an emotional roller coaster😢
this video was uploaded at the perfect time. I literally just re-endered my Matilda musical faze
i performed this musical when I was in middle school and the songs bring me so much nostalgia please do more Matt ‼️‼️
it's so funny that he kept saying Chutney, cause that's what the wormwoods call miss Honey in the stage show. I also definitely recommend watching Loud and Telly, which are Matilda's parents' songs!!!
2:28 - oooOOoo a medley
2:33 - the- the Tony awards? Is that THE ONE?
2:35 - naughty? It could be THE ONE
2:37 - REVOLTING CHILDREN? It could DEFINITELY be THE ONE
2:38 - WHEN I GROW UP 🎉🎉🎉 ITS THE ONE 🎉🎉🎉 THE BEST 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Mat if you do another one I hope you include "School Song" (Maybe the film version is more visual with regards to the lyrics) but especially "Quiet" as from the very first listen, it has meant so much to me as someone who has an anxiety disorder and can be relatable to anyone who doesn't feel like they fit in, in every sense of the word.
Theres an abc one dunno what its called but its sooo good in the movie.
I forgot that "When I grow up" always brings me to tears😂 its so poignant and sad and sweet and heartwarming
I SO want you to listen to quiet, loud and smell of rebellion!!! Loved this!
Theyre not next to each other in the play but they do tell a different story than the rest of the play
i used to cry to those, no joke
YOU NEED TO DO ANOTHER ONE OF THESE PLEAAASSEEE OMG!!!! You DEFINITELY should listen to “this little girl” and “quiet” also, great video, keep up the great content and smiles!
This was one of my very first exposures to Musical Theatre and helped me fall in love with musicals
Oh please wacht more of these, all the songs are so good !!
Fr gotta listen and watch the school song in the movie musical version Mathew, the choreography in the school gate is great.
Btw when they say revolting rhymes, they could be referencing revolting rhymes that was another Role darl book ❤❤
“Complacency is complicit sometimes” - Mathew 2024 23:04
There were 2 song in the musical that weren’t in the movie, telly and loud. Personally these were 2 of my favourite songs when my school performed the musical and I would love if you’d react to them!
This video was so good! I really recommend listening to more of the movie songs cause they really get the message across well. My favorites were Miracle and School Song! They’re cool scenes that would definitely confuse u lol
I freaking love this movie/musical. It's so awesome. Tim Minchin is a lyrical genius. Definitely listen/watch more from this show.
The movie is SO UNDERRATED, you should watch it too
I felt so much nostalgia watching this! I was 13 when i first watched Matilda on stage, I learned all the songs!
I’m 25 now and still listen to the original broadway soundtrack!
I love Still Holding My Hand ❤
You gotta do the rest of this musical! Its so good 😅
You should watch the Matilda musical movie ❤😂❤😂
The day this video came out, audition information for Matilda the Musical at a community theater also came out! I’m hoping for Hortensia and my brother wants Bruce, fingers crossed!
Great video, I love Matilda so I obviously loved this vid :)
I definitely think you should do more songs from this show, specifically Quiet and School song, they are two of my favs.
Love seeing another musical reaction from ya!!
Matilda the musical was one of the plays our school had this year ❤😂❤😂
A HALF HOUR VIDEO ON MATILDA THE MUSICAL????
Have i died and went to heaven?
Another day requesting for more Sofia the first songs or Elena of Avalor (which is a spin off from Sofia) songs or the episode
I played Miss Honey in my college production of Matilda: The Musical and the song “My House” always made me tear up whenever I sang it😭
You NEED to listen to school song, the smell of rebellion and Miracle THEY ARE SOOOOOOOOOOOOO GOOD!!!
Omg I did a high school production of this musical when i was a freshman, today's my birthday so i'm excited to relive this.
I was going to say how obsessed I was with this show as a kid but honestly i'm still obsessed
You literally came out with this video on opening night for my performance I’m in of Matilda jr.
Don’t worry Matthew. I watched this musical live at the west end around a decade ago and have listened to the songs plenty of times since. I only just realised the double meaning of Revolting when you mentioned it. I don’t think I would ever have realised it otherwise either.
Please do a part two! Some recommendations include Miracle, Quiet, The School Song, and Still Holding My Hand
