AC Drain Pan Keeps Filling Up Solved

  • I had a system I was working on that would keep filling the emergency drain pan. The float switch would trip and turn off the thermostat. I made several trips and cleared the line each time with CO2.
    It ended up that the drain pipe leaving the primary pan was slightly angled up causing the system not to drain properly.

    Been battling this problem all summer in the Texas heat. Water can't travel uphill. Thank you for this video.

    I’m going through this nightmare 6th time this year (Florida) today tech (holiday Veterans Day charge) came out and shot nitrogen into the drain and something somewhere in the wall behind drywall made a loud bang ! Like it blew off a joint off . Water did start to seep out onto the floor . Now they are coming out Monday with a dedicated drain replacement team to install new drain pipes? In the mean time (Saturday) the tech rig a drain tube to drain from the air handler unit to the utility/laundry room sink (co-located) it did not drain very well but does drain within the “coil” area and has saturated the foil looking sound barrier with an over abundance of water , which has been draining into the drip pan , all these times. After watching your video, I also pushed down on the drain tube and could see a lot of drip-ich now coming out that temp clear hose tube. Something I’ll
    Mention to the new guys coming out Monday. Wish me luck.

    Here are simple solutions we use. If you don't have access to a compressor an air hose, simply place your hose on the drainline and back fill with water pressure, then quickly remove the hose an notice the water coming from the line. If you see sludge, repeat the process until the line is clear.

      I don’t advise homeowners do this. It is a very good possibility a non professional will flood their air handler or coil and cause damage to their ceiling and or walls.

    Mine would build up sludge in the pan itself, preventing proper voiding into the pvc and pan meet.........gotta clear the sludge from the pan itself. :)

    Lifesaver - our pipe had somehow popped out of brackets and was hanging down so water couldn’t flow out.

    Is that a piston? Still looks like it has high superheat and low sub cool. Also sometimes you have to pitch that thing to the front raise the back up a little the theory that you need a perfectly level unit does not always work with their manufacturing guidelines.

    Also going to add an in-line float switch in the secondary float switch should never get to the drain pan

    I vaccuumed 3 gallons off my secondary pan this morning, drain lines clear and pvc pipe pointing slightly downward. No idea why water is dripping in the pan. Soon I'll have to replace the secondary pan because it is starting to rust.

    • @AbilityJohn

      You could have a cracked primary pan, slime in the pan, low refrigerant or water being pulled off the coil and into the cabinet.

    • @billgoldenmusic
      @billgoldenmusic ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AbilityJohn hey man, what would cause water to be pulled off the coil and into the cabinet? Reason I ask, brand new HVAC install in May, been having moisture problems, excessive sweating, but also water inside the cabinet and dripping from the corner seam on the delivery side. Can't seem to find the problem, charge is good, attic ventilation is good, tons of shade here so my attic never really gets above 90. I also have a box fan blowing directly onto the air handler for more air flow around the unit. Oh and the primary drain line is putting out plenty of water.

    How are homes still getting away with a hvac system with just a pan and no drain lines?

    • @AbilityJohn
      @AbilityJohn  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Because people won’t call for service if their secondary is leaking. They think it’s normal and before you know it it has rusted through and the ceiling is soaked.

      @@AbilityJohn yeah cause that's what we just ran into on home inspection was galvanized pan no drain what so ever. Sellers see no issue buyers have seller installing drains or they back out of the home......drains are not even that expensive. It blows my mind and if the builder installed knowing no drain why not use plastic tubs?

    • @AbilityJohn
      @AbilityJohn  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Let me get this straight, there isn’t even a primary drain line? That doesn’t seem possible to me. Depending on the humidity that pan could fill up within a couple of hours.

      @@AbilityJohn they do and we have to shop vac em monthly lmao 😂 or they put it up so high that the drain line flirts with the float switch and if heat or cold water warps pan\flexes it still doesn't drain before it cuts off the systems.

    The problem that the air handler drain pan fills bak up within a day after I drain it and the drain line is draining fine because it come out of the soffit of the house and I don't think that's actually good either so if someone could steer me in the rite direction I would appreciate it

    • @AbilityJohn

      Sounds like you haven’t located the correct drain. That sounds like the emergency drain. If it drains up high then that is just to alert you.

    • @AbilityJohn
      @AbilityJohn  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sounds like it. Get it fixed before it causes damage or see if the line is clogged. You can use a shop vac and some bleach usually to handle this. Otherwise you may have a cracked pan.
