    Made in Japan, is a legendary album. Ian Paice on the drums did all of that on the most basic of drum kits. As you said, these were master musicians.

    One of the best live albums of all time. Even through Jon Lord's keyboard assault, Ian Paice was killing those drums. With Ian, every song is a drum solo.

    I've never seen a more exciting or more enthralling live band than Deep Purple, and a large part of that was the unpredictability of the performances. The basic structure remained, but the band would be watching and listening for cues during the instrumental sections, especially watching Blackmore who was usually directing proceedings from his exclusive side of the stage. This one is more easy to appreciate with the visuals I think, as the band was performing for the crowd, not the recording.

    The long instrumental part is a worked-out improvisation that was used as an extension to "Mandrake Root" in the earlier days. Mandrake Root was from before Gillan and Glover replaced Simper and Evans and when played live it got this elaborate improvisation at the end. It grew over time and after "Machine Head" was released the lads thought it a good idea to add it to "Space Trucking".

    When I was 12 and 13 I listened to the double album of Jesus Christ Superstar rather obsessively, it was great. By the time I was 15 I had become just as obsessive with the Deep Purple album Made in Japan with my absolute favorite song being Lazy. Little did I know I was actually listening to the same person, Ian Gillian! as he sings the part of Jesus on the Jesus Christ Superstar album. Lazy is still my favorite song. This particular song, Space Truckin' kind of sounds like my cats fighting which makes me a little tense. Agree with you about the drummer, he and all the band members had an intensity and brilliance that I have never seen matched.

    Deep Purple recorded a live album called Deep Purple In Concert. It was recorded in 1970 and 1972. It wasn't released until 1980. It was a double album with a 22:14 version of Space Truckin'. Only other song on side 4 was a cover of Lucille

I was a witness to Deep Purple outdoors in a large concert in the park in Hartford CT, not long after this, it was loud and powerful, you could have heard that show in New Haven down I91 ! Great band that pushed the boundaries of Rock, from the same album, try Lazy, another classic. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶

    The renowned Mark II lineup embarked on a tour of Japan in mid 1972. While they did not initially plan on recording a live album, they eventually agreed to release performances recorded for an exclusive Japanese live release. To the band's surprise, their label was impressed and decided to launch it worldwide. Although critical of his own performance, Gillan was impressed by the recording's quality. The album went platinum in just a couple of weeks. "Made in Japan" is widely regarded as one of the most outstanding live albums ever created and revolutionized the live album concept.

    Top 10 Live albums of all time!!!!! Jon Lord pushing that Hammond through Marshall guitar amps! Blackmore working that volume knob for that cello vibe.

    • @harryschonfeld8175
      @harryschonfeld8175 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That cello vibe from about minute 18 to after minute 20 came from another song, Fools, on the album Fireball (1971). Fools was a masterpiece among many masterpieces but not much played live. I guess Ritchie Blackmore wasn't too fond of playing a slower tune that didn't allow him to shred his guitar. So they incorporated a small portion of Fools into this Space Truckin performance, like they did with the Mandrake Root drums.

    • @JohnSmith-mx8wp
      @JohnSmith-mx8wp 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      On an electric guitar, the "cello" effect is called a volume swell. Turn the instrument to zero, pluck a string, THEN turn the volume knob up with the pinky finger. Steve Morse (former DP guitarist) is quite good at this technique too.

  • @glenchapman3899
    @glenchapman3899 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Interesting fact about the album. It was only after the record company agreed to ONLY release this Japan did Deep Purple even allow it to be made, Once it became a hit in Japan the album was released around the world without permission from the band. There was a box set of all three shows recorded to put the album together. You hear some really funny stuff, like Blackmore screwing up the intro to Smoke on the Water at one show. And in another song, a mike picks up two Japanese guys chatting away.

    When I play this for someone , I make sure and tell them to listen to the drummer , about three fourths the way thru , he gets quiter , otherwise , Ian Paice is rippin it up for 18 minutes ! He's gonna make your foot tired from tapping . The Made In Japan album is my favorite album of all time , I first heard this about 78 or 79 , I was like 9 years old and jammin out to this . Grew up with Deep Purple , still my favorite today !!

    John Lord would rock his Hammond B-3 organ and let it bump the floor of the stage, just to get more sounds out of it; so much so the thing would nearly tip over. The "Cannons" you hear from this same album in the song "Sweet Child in Time" are John Lord's B-3 being "Thumped" about right there and right there. He could imitate a Howitzer with that thing on command.
