  • In this video we're checking out Deep Purple. We figured since it's Halloween we should look for titles that seem dark. And Black Night really seems to fit that. We're excited. Enjoy!

    Wow! Indeed! 5 musicians at the top of their games. And Ian, Ian and Roger still rocking and still writing great tunes

    "Child In Time" live, 1970, the British TV version is worth a listen/watch to fully appreciate the skill of this band.

    Great reaction, loved your enthusiasm. Deep Purple is an awesome band, such an abundance of talented musicians. I saw them live around1972/73, and a friend just saw them a few weeks ago in Germany. Keep on rockin boys!

    Deep Purple's biggest hit in the UK after the band's management, or record company, told them they needed to write a single. The live version from the Made in Japan recordings is even better.

    It's amazing watching folk listen to something for the first time....... something that has been part of my musical life for around 50 years......us Old Gits got all the best music in the late 60's and early 70's.
    What a great time to have been around 👍🤟🤟🤟💚

    The only mainstream TV coverage of chart music in the UK in the sixties was Top Of The Pops and it was usually dire, consisting of bland pop, parent's favourites and dire novelty hits. Except for one memorable and entirely untypical episode which featured both Paranoid by Black Sabbath and Black Night by Deep Purple. My school playground the next day was filled with boys demonstating spectacular air guitar solos to each other, me included!

    This was actually a chart hit in the UK in 1971 ( TOTP's appearance and all ,) ! This and paranoid by Black Sabbath ! It just shows you how much chart music has changed ! Can you imagine a rocker like this making the mainstream charts today ?? 😀

    In 1970, Deep Purple borrowed the riff on "Black Night" from The Blues Magoos 1966 song "We Ain't Got Nothing Yet". Have a listen and you will find out.

    Richi Blackmore - having done his homework - meaning - he's trying out everything you can with his tool...only the heavy-metal dudes are cranking out of an instrument. That thing that John Lord and the drummer are doing their thing also - is hammering out the works. Ian Gillan always on pitch is simply unbelievable.

  • @Grithron2

    The signature riff is often said to be copied from RIcky Nelson's version of Summertime, but - compare them - it's actually copied from We Ain't Got Nothin' by The Blues Magoos. What no-one seems to notice is that, beyond that, the song is a bit of a rewrite of John D Loudermilk's Tobacco Road.

    Love the crazy Blackmore vibrato, whammy bar screaming solos. Fun fact: he was so brutal with the whammy bars that his guitar tech used to get custom ones made up that were much thicker and stronger….

    Ian Paice, THE rock swing drummer. Try My Woman From Tokyo from their Deep Purple In Concert. A double album from two BBC concerts, one from 1970 the other 72. Great live but recorded under good conditions.
    Edit: my mistake, gettin' my women mixed up! I meant Strange Kind Of Woman.

    Really confused...how is it that you have never heard so much music? Every single song you guys have played is really mainstream popular music with the exception of Nick Cave. I don't understand. What were you listening to all these years?

    • @hanierfamily
      @hanierfamily  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We are from Canada. And I guess we were pop fans. The music I (Chris) knew best was charting in Eastern Canada while I was a DJ from 15 to 35 years old. Outside that I occasionally strayed. We're learning now what we missed then.
