Awesome, thank you so much for this video! I litterally was looking for a portrait lense for my A6300 yesterday! Saw the Sony 50/1.8 and Sigma 56mm at the local electronics store...

I have the Sigma 56 and the Sony 16-55; absolutely adore both. Although unless I really need that extra lowlight performance, I generally stick with the 16-55 just for the versatility.

When I purchased the Sigma (rattling) 60 for my A6000, there was no 56 on the market. I am a hobby photographer and have shots portraits with it at wide open without any issues whatsoever. Not only portraits but also some bird shots in the backyard came out crisp and clear. I have only this one out of your list of 5.

    Hi Arthur,
    Love your videos! 👍🏻
I’ve also got the Sigma 56mm F1.4 DC DN | Contemporary on my a6600. It’s awesome, but I was a little surprised that it’s actually a little loud when it’s adjusting when I turn the control wheel between modes and when it’s focusing. I never heard that to be a “thing” but apparently it’s no news to the guys at the camera store where I bought it. Oh well, as long as the pictures are great, then I can certainly live with the sounds! 😃
Have you ever considered trying out and review the Rokinon AF 75mm F1.8?

Great video. I'm already seriously considering the Sigma 56mm F1.4 for my Sony a6600. I've never really done any portrait work however I'd love to give it a go. The 56mm F1.4 will be put to use in other fields, low light etc. The only other e-mount lens I currently have is Sony's 30mm F3.5 macro which is lovely and sharp and light too. An excellent 30mm general-purpose lens really. The 56mm F1.4 should compliment that really well. I'm just struggling on the 18-105 vs 18-135mm zoom lens....

I had the kit lens bought the 35mm 1.8 used it mostly and now bought the 56mm sigma can't wait to try it out!
I think the best combo would be 56mm Sigma, 35mm 1.8 Sony, 85mm 1.8 Sony and a wide lens (around 16mm). The tele lenses for regular portrait, 35mm for environmental portrait and the wide for some more unique portraits and some environmental portrait

Hi Arthur! One more time: great material! Just a question, if I may... I have the opportunity to buy a Sony 50mm 1.8 half a price of the Sigma 56mm 1.4. It is a huge difference here in Argentina, so my question would be: Is there so much difference between those two? Or I can go to Sony and have great results yet? Here in my country I am talking about a difference of $300 (sony costs $300, and sigma $600). Thanks in advance!

As of 2021, would you still recommend the a6000 over a canon m50 II or dslr, like the 850d? They are currently a similar cost range, and you're earlier video has swung me around to believing in Sony, I'll be using it for photography whilst on walks/hikes, so landscapes, and close-up's of plants/animals. What comes off to me as important, is usability, which the mirror-less exceed in with their light weight and compact designs, and battery life, which is where they tend to fall flat. The newer sony A series are out of the price range, but the A6000 is within, what are you're thoughts?

I know that you primarily review Sony cameras, or Sony mount lenses. But I think it will be interesting if you could compare the sharpness of the Sigma 56mm f1.4, with Sony's APS-C rival, the Fuji 56mm f1.2. Both APS-C (1.5x crop), and both 56mm.

    Hey Arthur,
I was curious if you could ever do a comparison of the Sigma 56mm 1.4 vs a 70-200 f/2.8 for portraits? I have a sigma 70-200 2.8 from 2010 for Canon EF mount adapted via MC-11, and wanted to know if the 1.4 aperture at 56mm would result in better portraits than at 2.8 at 200mm. My copy of the lens is very sharp, but I don't know if 1.4 at the wider focal range would result in better bokeh.

  • @DenyoTV

Zeiss Sonnar 55 F1.8 with FE-Mount is a good alternative and should be nr.1 in this list. Because of the crop and the FE-Lens you get a great image with perfect sharpness overall, the edges and a stunning bokeh.

This is a very good selling point for APS-C cameras in general. The Sigma 56mm F1.4 lens is excellent, costs about $400, and weighs 0.6lbs. The equivalent in Full Frame (perhaps the Sigma 85mm F1.4) costs $1200 and weighs 1.4lbs. Basically FF costs and weighs twice as much.

Arthur R, I need your advice as a a6000 expert. I have the a6000 with the Samyang2f1.4 (for astrophotography) and Sigma56f1.4 (portraits). However I love landscaping and I'm thinking of getting the 16-55f.28 because I hate changing lenses during excursions and getting too much weight.
Do you think selling the Sigma and the Samyang and getting the sony16-55f2.8 would be a clever change?

  • @johndonaldson5126
    @johndonaldson5126 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

There's no question the Sigma 56 1.4 is my favorite portrait lens. It's simply super sharp. I like the photos that come off this lens.
I had the Sony 85mm FF which is a great lens. However the focal length made me stand back too far from my subject, and often I would run out of room backing up to get a shot. I finally sold that lens.
My second most favorite portrait lens is the Tamron 70-180. It can easily replace the Sony 85mm in focal length and it is quite sharp; perhaps not as sharp as the 85 but plenty sharp enough. But the advantage is I can use it at 70mm and not have to be as far away as with the 85. It's a good compromise, and actually it is sharp enough that I don't consider it a compromise at all. It's an extraordinary zoom.
In third position is the Sigma 30mm 1.4. It isn't as sharp as the 56 nor the Tamron but the extra wider angle is right in many situations.
I also have the Sony 35mm 1.8 which is a small decent lens but the main reason I keep it (with the Sigma 30 as the other prime I have) is because it is stabilized which helps when mounted on my a6400. This is the combination my wife uses while acting as second shooter for family portraits.

Do you have any recommendations for a zoom lens that's good for portraits? Looking for something that's more versatile

I like the include of a zoom just wonder if for the money might the sigma 24-70 be just as useful for portraits? I know you lose that 16mm length but seems like that is a little wide for a frequent portrait lens.

I guess if you redid this video today, that expensive Sony zoom would be replaced by the excellent Sigma 18-50 f2.8, although it doesn't have quite the same reach at the tele end. Great video and thanks for your work and enthusiasm.

Please do a show for the best long zooms for the a6xxx series... We're dying to see a comparison between the Sony 70-350 and the Sigma 100-400 (along with other alternatives) to see if the Sony 70-350 is better for the a6xxx series because it's made specifically for APS-C, or does the Sigma 100-400 shine bc of the extra reach despite the fact that it's FF? Are there better choices?
Help us Arthur R, you're our only hope!

The Sigma 56mm F1.4 really seems to have done well for itself and is highly rated. What I'd love to see would be a direct comparison between it and the recently announced Viltrox 56mm F1.4. The Viltrox does come in at a cheaper price point but does that mean its worse? I haven't seen any comparisons between the two yet.

Last week I spent a lot of time looking for another portrait lens. I choosed and buyed Viltrox 85 1.8 (1.6) yesterday... Six hours before your video.

I wonder how the Fuji 56mm 1.2 compares to the Sigma 56mm 1.4? I know you can't get the Sigma for the Fuji system but I'm curious anyway. 🙂

I just get in photography with the sony a6400 and I do like the Kamlan 50 mm f1.1 II for portrait... Its sharpness is really amazing ! I can't compare it to the sigma 56mm f1.4 (don't have it yet) but I think they might be at the same level. Also the Kamlan cost less than the sigma.
Would you consider to compare those 2 lenses one another ?

Just bought the Sigma 56/1.4 for my EF-M camera. It's awesomely fucking good. Incredibly sharp, strong bokeh and very fast focusing. The pincushion distortion sucks, but everything else is excellent, really worth the price.

I see you take a lot of your photos on a tripod (as you should). But from a backpacker's perspective, how feasible is it to take high quality, sharp photos handheld with, say... a non stabilised camera such as the a6100 and a non stabilised lens, like the sigma 56mm? Would you say it works fine most of the time? What about in low light conditions? Actually mind if I suggest a video on this topic, haha.

    • @TheWoolyninja4
      @TheWoolyninja4 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

In my opinion I think you will find that IBIS and OSS lenses are not a must for handheld photography. If you are reasonably stable, not shacking like a leaf, and using an f1.4 to f2.8 your shutter speed should be plenty fast. The images you get should have no problem being usable. That being said you will always be more consistent with a tripod or other stabilizing assistance. If you are really set on having a tripod and also not hindering your minimalist backpacking weight their are options out there but fair warning they come at some extreme premiums.

Thanks for this great video. None of your top 5 is stabilized and I would add the Sony 50 1.8 OSS to the list just if someone wants to do video with it as well.
