But they vary in different ways. The thing is, when this song came out it sounded unique and original. But by 1999 this sound had already been in the forefront of the mainstream with other artists performing similar music. After the likes of Sugar Ray, Sublime and other reggae/ska influenced groups started putting out hit after hit, it was so familiar. So Smash Mouth did NOT sell out. Smash Mouth was one of the biggest bands around during my early childhood in the late 90’s and early aughts. It broke my heart to hear about Steve’s passing this morning. Getting old sucks.

@@cosmosaic8117 I hear ya but as someone who was born in 1980 and a teenager through most of the early and late 90s, I just feel like voice of a generation isn't really appropriate for Steve Harwell. A really good songwriter and lyricist for sure (RIP) but when I think of voice of a generation for the 90s I think of the Seattle guys like Kurt Cobain, Eddie Vedder, Layne Staley, and Chris Cornell, or Billy Corgan or maybe even Shannon Hoon or Bradley Knowles, before I'd think of Harwell. Whatever, it's a silly argument and I have mad respect for him either way.
First, R.I.P. to Steve Harwell. This song always will always will have special place in my heart. I was really huge jazzbo; stuff like Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman, Wes Montgomery, Grant Green, etc... Then I heard this song in the summer of '97. All my friends hated it, but I loved the vibe and the ambience of the spring reverb guitars and warmth the vocals and drums. This track feels like a beautifully hot summer day with an unmatched brilliance to it. Novel yet very classy. I also owe this band a massive thank you for getting me into experimental lounge music specifically the group Tipsy! - a Bay Area duo that was also incredibly amazing for its time. I always wish they would have collaborated together and made some weird experimental lounge madness together. Stay Fresh!
There's a lot of musical talent in this group. Clear inspiration by 70's psychedelic rock and R&B like The Doors or Steely Dan, and translating it well enough for the 90's. It's great.

The post-grunge period of music marked (most likely) the only time in the history of mainstream music where bands with completely different sounds and influences could find a place on the charts with consistent airplay and rotation. Rage Against the Machine, Squirrel Nut Zippers, Smash Mouth, Blues Traveler, Radiohead, and Matchbox Twenty were all very different, but found much success. Didn't last long, however, but the musical variety that this 5 to 6 year period allowed for was amazing. Much respect.
***** Yeah, it seems that music today is becoming more eclectic and diverse, in contrast to the genre-guided periods of years past. But this is really only due to the death of terrestrial radio, which also killed 'waves' and sound trends...For rock, everything is pretty much classified as 'New Rock,' or ' New Alternative' now. It's good that radio no longer "...plays what they want you to hear...," but it's harder to find talented acts because there are so many media outlets now for music. However, I will say that even on SiriusXM, they DO have a rotation, but they offer more stations specific to what you want to hear. I dunno.
Respectfully, I would submit that the early 70's was at least as diversified in style as the 90's. You had everything from country (Glen Campbell) to gospel (Ocean, Jesus Christ Superstar Album), bubble gum (Osmonds), R&B (Gladys Knight, Jackson 5) rock (Alice Cooper) and even spoken word (Byron Macgregor) playing one right after the other. Those particular artists are obviously just a few examples, but you get my point.
LYRICS: It ain't no joke I'd like to buy the world a toke And teach the world to sing in perfect harmony And teach the world to snuff the fires and the liars Hey, I know it's just a song, but it's spice for the recipe This is a love attack I know it went out, but it's back It's just like any fad, it retracts before impact And just like fashion, it's a passion for the with-it and hip If you got the goods, they'll come and buy it just to stay in the clique So don't delay, act now, supplies are running out Allow if you're still alive Six to eight years to arrive And if you follow, there may be a tomorrow But if the offer's shunned You might as well be walking on the Sun Twenty-five years ago, they spoke out and they broke out Of recession and oppression and together they toked And they folked out with guitars around a bonfire Just singin' and clappin', man, what the hell happened? Then some were spellbound, some were hellbound Some, they fell down and some got back up And fought back against the meltdown And their kids were hippie chicks, all hypocrites Because fashion is smashing the true meaning of it So don't delay, act now, supplies are running out Allow if you're still alive Six to eight years to arrive And if you follow, there may be a tomorrow But if the offer's shunned You might as well be walking on the Sun It ain't no joke When a mama's handkerchief is soaked With her tears because her baby's life has been revoked The bond is broke up So choke up and focus on the close up Mr. Wizard can't perform no god-like hocus-pocus So don't sit back, kick back And watch the world get bushwhacked News at 10, your neighborhood is under attack Put away the crack, before the crack puts you away You need to be there when your baby's old enough to relate So don't delay, act now, supplies are running out Allow if you're still alive Six to eight years to arrive And if you follow, there may be a tomorrow But if the offer's shunned You might as well be walking on the Sun You might as well be walking on the Sun You might as well be walking on the Sun You might as well be walking on the Sun You might as well be walking on the Sun...

1997 was my freshman year in college studying Psychology. I had spent almost six years listening Heavy Metal, Thrash Metal, Death Metal and Black Metal and then this song came out on the radio as I was on the autobus going to classes, suddenly I was swinging and dancing that sunny and warm morning and and that same afternoon a cousin tolde me his father had bought him this CD and this song became part of the remix tape for going camping with my friends. Today, 25 years later I woke up singing and I have listened this same tune eight times. There is no such a time machine like the memories and this music is the fuel moves its engine.
Nobody really actually LISTENS to the words. If they did, they might not like Smash Mouth or many other bands. To them it's just a catchy tune with no meaning.

RIP, Steve Harwell. Rest assured that you and Smash Mouth will eventually get the recognition you deserve! I've always loved the Retro Alt-Rock sound of your vibe. Fantastic!
I've been geeking hard over the productions of Eric Valentine lately. He is such a bold producer and you can really hear his influence on stuff he got his fingers on. Reminds me how 90s radio wasn't just grunge and RnB, there was all kinds of stuff like this that was harder to nail down to a genre, and also seemed like the first time in popular music history that people started looking backwards for inspiration in production, which is so common now but kind of lacking its own style. I've always liked "anti producers" like Steve Albini or "reducers" like Rick Rubin, but theres something honestly great about some of these laboured, tricked out 90s productions that were dripping in style and sounded nothing like a band in a room.
Smash Mouth makes music in the color orange & yellow. Always refreshing literally sounds like summer cocktails and sunny delight after spending the day outside

Shed a few tears today hearing that the singer passed, didn’t know how dear to my heart they were. Later on I got caught up in the jokes and memes about Smash mouth, but they’re no joke. These songs are timeless and dude is an insane lyricist.
RIP, Steve. Thanks so much for the awesome tunes and memories. Smash Mouth is one of the bands that really defined my grade school years. 💔
Rest well, Steve. The first song I heard of theirs and remains their best. Still relevant all these years later. Clever as hell.
Here's to the people who actually listen to lyrics. Skål!
Great 90s song I was new in my career and I still can rock out with smash mouth sorry he pasted he was so great wished he would have known that
This was my dance teacher’s go to song growing up for our warm-up/across the floor combinations. Every Thursday at 6:30 without fail for a solid 5 years in a row. Never once got tired of hearing it, it slaps so hard. Rest in peace, Steve ❤️
I remember being around 5 when this song came out and going to the water slides & beach and having the best summer ever!! I loved smash mouth rest in peace thank you for making my childhood memories amazing
Very sad to hear that Steve Harwell passed away TODAY. Such a talented singer for Smash Mouth. I hope he had a good life with family, friends, his band mates and fans.
🌞 🌅 Walking On The Sun; will always be one of my favorite songs. 🌅 🌞

Thanks for the memories!!
Smash Mouth hd a really unique sound in the late 90s. I can’t name another band who sounded like them.
Shame they totally sold out after this album.
@@Il_Exile_lI really?? This was a number 1 single, on the ALL GENRE FORMAT hot 100!!! Selling out was impossible, they were already sold. This album was just as formulatic as Astro Lounge.
They only happened to represent a popular movement in music.

Smash Mouth was one of the biggest bands around during my early childhood in the late 90’s and early aughts. It broke my heart to hear about Steve’s passing this morning. Getting old sucks.
Same.. RIP Steve ❤️❤️❤️📻
"Getting old" 😂
He wasn't "old," he was only 56. He died from acute liver failure due to decades of alcoholism, which was no doubt exacerbated by the tragic loss of his 6 month old son to leukemia.
He couldn't cope because he never learned the therapy he needed, so drank himself to death. Rest in peace and rise in glory Steve.@@calisongbird
This song is a timeless classic fr. I'm still gonna be playing this in 50 years. It's just a whole mood of its own.
Crazy how it took the lead singer’s death for everyone to realize & remember how much we loved this band. Don’t take things for granted! Rip
I've always loved them since I was a kid. I was listening to this song on a road trip last week, and I found out he was sick a few days ago then found out he passed. So strange and sad in so many ways

Us 90's kids are all here paying our respects. The voice of a generation.
Yes amen this is Trevor
That was Kurt Cobain
Yes Cobain but late 90s kids don’t fully grasp that as deep as early 90s teens
I was born in 2009 but I'm all about the previous song generation's
Stay Fresh!
RIP! Thanks for bringing me an amazing childhood experience with your music ❤
There's a lot of musical talent in this group. Clear inspiration by 70's psychedelic rock and R&B like The Doors or Steely Dan, and translating it well enough for the 90's. It's great.
I don't see a clear Steely Dan inspiration at all.
@@ChrisLawton66 It's definitely not entirely clear. But it's definitely there in my eyes, as a fan of both groups.

That's a very astute observation, my friend!
Talyn has time
Thank you so much!!!!

Yeah, it seems that music today is becoming more eclectic and diverse, in contrast to the genre-guided periods of years past. I dunno.
*****
No, thank you! I'm glad to see someone who's current and knowledgeable on music, both past and present!
Love the 60s retro vibe and sound of this song, one of my favorites, along with _When The Morning Comes_ 😊
RIP Steve 💐

LYRICS:
It ain't no joke
I'd like to buy the world a toke
And teach the world to sing in perfect harmony
And teach the world to snuff the fires and the liars
Hey, I know it's just a song, but it's spice for the recipe
This is a love attack
I know it went out, but it's back
It's just like any fad, it retracts before impact
And just like fashion, it's a passion for the with-it and hip
If you got the goods, they'll come and buy it just to stay in the clique
So don't delay, act now, supplies are running out
Allow if you're still alive
Six to eight years to arrive
And if you follow, there may be a tomorrow
But if the offer's shunned
You might as well be walking on the Sun
Twenty-five years ago, they spoke out and they broke out
Of recession and oppression and together they toked
And they folked out with guitars around a bonfire
Just singin' and clappin', man, what the hell happened?
Then some were spellbound, some were hellbound
Some, they fell down and some got back up
And fought back against the meltdown
And their kids were hippie chicks, all hypocrites
Because fashion is smashing the true meaning of it
So don't delay, act now, supplies are running out
Allow if you're still alive
Six to eight years to arrive
And if you follow, there may be a tomorrow
But if the offer's shunned
You might as well be walking on the Sun
It ain't no joke
When a mama's handkerchief is soaked
With her tears because her baby's life has been revoked
The bond is broke up
So choke up and focus on the close up
Mr. Wizard can't perform no god-like hocus-pocus
So don't sit back, kick back
And watch the world get bushwhacked
News at 10, your neighborhood is under attack
Put away the crack, before the crack puts you away
You need to be there when your baby's old enough to relate
So don't delay, act now, supplies are running out
Allow if you're still alive
Six to eight years to arrive
And if you follow, there may be a tomorrow
But if the offer's shunned
You might as well be walking on the Sun
You might as well be walking on the Sun
You might as well be walking on the Sun
You might as well be walking on the Sun
You might as well be walking on the Sun...

This could've been recorded in 1966 & fit perfectly, the overall tempo, the guitar, everything. And that's a major compliment.

They got a good couple years with this song, and of course All Star.
Third Eye Blind, Satriani and Songs for the Deaf. Who knew
