  • Today, I am going to share my experience of being scammed in Pattaya. This is not a common scam, and it's the first time I have experienced something like this. Pattaya has many other scams to beware of, this one caught me by surprise.

I stayed at many hotels in Pattaya. When I was checking out of one, I was given a bill for the stay and told I needed to pay. The taxi was waiting outside to take me to the airport. I told them I had already paid but they said I hadn't. They were trying to trick me thinking I'd panic about missing my flight if there was a problem. I still remember her words "Mister you pay now or we call Police". So I reached in my bag and produced my receipt saying I'd paid fully. The look on her face was priceless. I then said "Ok maybe I should call Police?"
She was not too happy, I made her lose face very badly and they hate that!

Excellent tip. I live in Thailand and use Agoda where I increasingly see the option of paying at the hotel which is typically a little cheaper. I have always paid by CC but your story puts me off selecting the pay-at-the-hotel option in the future. I appreciate the upload. Take care. JP

So what can you do to protect yourself from this , just demand to use your credit card if they ask for cash ? Or maybe even break out your phone if they demand cash and videotape yourself handing them the cash and state the time and date and the length of your stay and amount of cash you’re giving them ? ( I know that sounds kinda tacky but it will definitely make them rethink scamming you if that’s what their intentions were ) it sucks we have to go through life even thinking about this , about five years ago I was in a bar here in my home town that my friends brother owns , I got pretty banged up but I know 100% for sure that I payed my tab at the end of the night , a couple days later the owner ( my friends brother ) called and asked me if I could come down and pay my tab ( he wasn’t even there that night ) so I told him I had definitely paid it , he said “ well it’s listed here that ya didn’t “,… to keep my friendship with his brother I drove down there and payed it ( again ) …it was only $65.00 but I haven’t set foot in his bar since ( over 5 years ),.. there has been a few motorcycle rides out of there over the years and I pull up and sit on my bike outside waiting while all my friends are having a couple beers inside until the ride begins , so I guess you could say he lost out in the long run .

Asking for a receipt would be one option and since they were claiming he was a no-show I guess having any kind of evidence proving you actually did stay there would help.

    • @johnkissam8312
      @johnkissam8312 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yep. Bastards play the game well. $65 is doable, not worth lighting your hair on fire. Just deal with it, shake your head and walk away. Whatever the scam is, it’s just under the five-alarm amount. These people live that way with everything they do. If ever you deal with building contractors get receipts from them and their sub contractors. “You expect me to show you receipts for every single nail?” Give me a reason not to.

I live in Pattaya and travel often through SEA, though not as much as you. My wife who is Thai and myself are quite vigilant when it comes to online bookings. I recently booked a villa in Phuket on another popular travel app that showed pictures and said it had a private pool. No pool and much lower grade. Scams happen in every country. Your video is an excellent reminder to pay attention to the small details. My experience is they won't ask for cash upon arrival when booking online.

Same thing happened to us last February in Phuket. We booked thru Agoda and when we got to the hotel, the lady there said they don't do business with Agoda since the previous December, so a bit dodgie I thought and paid cash. The lady wouldn't give me a receipt either. Nothing happened with Agoda afterwards, never got double charged or anything as we had booked a "pay at the establishment" hotel. To alleviate this kind of problem now, we only book a room as " book now pay later " with Agoda directly. We stay away from " pay at the establishment" ones. I don't even know why Agoda even permits this. Easy way into a loophole. Thx for sharing

I ended up with a $200 electric bill for a month in a 1 bedroom, View Talay 6. So this year I was going to be "smart" and get the all inclusive. The desk didn't want to book it, they acted like I was insane. They said just pay the electric it'll be better. I said I knew better from last year. Lo and behold, unit by the same company had a completely different A/C unit. A modern one vs one before that was probably 20 years old. I bet any money the A/C would have only cost $100/month. But I ended up paying the all inclusive rate which put me more like $180 ish. I still don't know for sure though, but, . . . yeah the next twist in the rules i follow is that I'm going to check what kind of A/C unit the room actually HAS before I sign up to any all inclusive rate.

This was during our closed borders time so I decided to cancel Agoda only refunded me hotels costs but not airlines !!! About AUD 300 loss from this situation ! So if your subs are using this company pick the pay as you go option n Agoda doesn’t deal with airlines even tho they ad as a package ! Cheers

Sadly, this is probably an employee or two that are just not well educated and think it's quick easy money, and probably get fired eventually. I doubt it's a hotel business model. But it still happens and is unfair.
On a different note, I picked a hotel in Lima Peru once that had a rooftop pool with fantastic views, and was within walking distance to city attractions, and within my budget, only to learn AFTER I arrived that the pool was closed for renovations. I could have gotten a slightly cheaper hotel and much closer walk (2 mins instead of 20 mins walk) to the ocean that did not have a pool. But the hotel did not list it anywhere that they closed it for renovations (AND for 6 months at that). You just have to take the good with the bad - the good was, I'm on vacation, it's still a very nice hotel with full buffet breakfast - enjoy life for what it has, not for what it doesn't.

For frequent Thailand renters you two guys need an education about rental fees. As a condo owner I can tell you that electric costs to the condo owner are much higher than what you may believe it should be. The rate is frequently increased by the Juristic Office and the condo owner adds a handling fee. This is normal in Thailand. Also, never pay anyone cash without getting a receipt that can be verified.

If they are going to rip you off they will be shy about showing their face with the full interaction on camera. That might cause scammers to back off. I’ve heard of this one on the Retired Working For You channel. Lesson I’m taking away, never pay hotels cash, ever.

I guess you have some kind of proof that you stayed in that hotel like date stamped pictures etc? Should help to prove that you you did in fact show up and that they are lying scammers.

So you're saying that by responding to the emails that yes you stayed at this hotel, you're good and prevents the scam?
Im planning my first trip next winter and aware of the scams, but this one is new to me too.

if they are saying you didn't pay and stayed in the accomodation, I would have a party invite everyone and tell everyone they can take all the furniture home and give out copies of the key
