I lived in Boulder, CO in the late 1990s. At the time, I was a recent college graduate and arrived with a 1993 Ford Ranger. It was very small compared to the modern Ranger. It also had all manual controls - no electronic, computerized controls. It had a cassette player though - lol. I put 319,000 miles on that truck - much of it on I-25 and the Boulder Turnpike. I had to move to FL in 2002 due to the IT job market crash. I have since returned to AZ and decided to get a 2022 Ford Ranger Tremor Lariat. This video was a factor. I traded in my 2019 Colorado Z71. The latter had low clearance and approach - largely due to the air dam. The elevated Tremor with upgraded electronic, computerized control is awesome. I bought it while in delivery since the Tremors were sold out in Phoenix. The chip shortage has made (1) trade-in value high and (2) popular models scarce. So, I felt lucky to find one by using the dealer inventory database. I tried out the Tremor in the remote mountains of Eastern AZ yesterday. It worked great over rugged rocks and rough dirt roads. The suspension and clearance are more robust for those rough dirt roads built upon old horseback trails of the 1800s - lol. It snows and gets muddy up there in the winter too. In the summer monsoon it can get very muddy. Despite the remote area, the navigation still showed the road name - very surprising. In 2000 I bought the F-150 at John Elway Ford in Boulder. That truck was only 2-wheel drive but made it up to Guanella Pass. I was a mountain runner back then and made it up Longs Peak via the keyhole route in less than 3 hours with a backpack. Boulder was great for mountain running. I ran up Mt. Sanitas hundreds of times and played a lot of basketball at the CU Rec Center. I am very happy with the Tremor purchase - thanks for your helpful reviews. Some people don't like the side steps and the auto-start/stop control, but I got used to both already.

Automatics with torque converters multiply torque and increase leverage over the ground. So you get better maintained speed, better torque for climbing, and when the car slows down relative to the engine speed the TC multiplies torque instead of stalling. Obviously have limits which is why low range is necessary, but autos rule off road and drag racing for a reason.
Folk on youtube comments always crying about how they want manuals but Autos are WAY better for offloading in every situation period. Always have been.
I'll take the "fun" factor any time over an automatic, be it a performance street vehicle or a trail rig. Never regretted doing auto to manual swaps on any of my vehicles.
@@Ryno-fp7pm older autos suck plain and simple. New autos are quicker shifting, have much better gear ratios, and have lockup clutches on the torque converter. . I’m trying to decide between a manual taco and a manual gladiator, both have MSRP of 37k. Toyota has rear locker where gladiator has limited slip. Can you guys do a manual gladiator comparison?
Its night and day to drive them. So buy the Taco if you want a manual it's far superior then the cheap manual they use in the gladiator. Even shifter is ten times better.
The '22 would handle it the same as the '09, or '15 since it's all the same truck. New sheet metal and bits inside, but the truck is the exact same. Same with the Pathfinder and Armada. Heavy refreshes. So if a 15 year old Frontier can do it so will the new version
Great content as always, boys. What I'd love to see - maybe on your long term Gladiator, but really on any of those trucks, is the exact same run up Truth or Dare, using the same truck on the same day/conditions, but testing out 3 or 4 different types of tire patterns. A stock all-season, a swiss army type tire (KO2s or similar) a mud tire, and a rock crawler tire. It maybe a bit out of the scope of vehicle reviews, but informative and probably pretty entertaining.

My diesel gladiator however is on 40s and is on trails 2-3x a month and I live on a 100 acre ranch which is basically a Boulder strewn mountain so it’s off road every single day
Finally some real offroad comparison video again!
Naturally since I’m a Colorado guy, I’m wanting to see the ZR2 as well. But this was pretty cool, too 😂

@@JDCheng similar place but the gm shocks hang much lower. I haven't measured but I'd say the different looks like 4 inches on the ranger compared to like 7 on the colorado. I'd love to know for sure though since that has been my concern with the ZR2 and Ranger.
At 2:54 is that condensation on the roof of the jeep above his head and to the right not the sun visor but the actual grey roof

I have gone from a tacoma to a f150 to a ram and now a tacoma again, im 6ft1 and i really love my tacoma's seating position, i feel right at home when im in it, iys allot more sporty than the other trucks and ride is firm, allot more fun to drive on a daily basis and fun to throw around, i like that low seated position as i feel if the floor of the truck is higher off the ground, i know its just an illusion but still i like it that way
Would my Ranger FX4 make it up that hill or was the Tremor pkg the difference?
I bet the FX4 would as well, still a pretty capable truck.

I’d like to see some good mud riding from all of these, as a southern boy I don’t really get Ice and snow or rocks too often, but we get a ton of muddy roads and nasty water and mud filled holes we love to barrel through fast.
If mud is your thing the Ranger should be low on your list. Until a sealed alternator is available anyways, it's mounted very low.

Nice comparison video guys! That Tremor in crawl control mode was impressive.
Ranger has the best tires for the circumstances. Those general grabbers atx are winter rated. Granted the snow wasn't a huge factor. But the softer compound in the cold still helps.
The Gladiator is one heavy truck. Hinders it off-road. Surprised at how well the Ranger performed. Kudos Ford!

Excellent video. We are waiting on the Bronco to trade in our (wife's) 2018 JLU. Tired of the steering issues and electronic problems. We test drove a 2020 Ranger and were both thoroughly surprised how well it drove. Seats were comfortable, steering was excellent, and that 4 cylinder really has torque at lower rpm's. May drive a Tremor. Our Sahara stickered at $45K with cloth interior and no real options besides a hard top. The Ranger we drive was a Lariat FX4 and it stickered the same. Again- keep up the great video's!
Roman: "I would prefer to have useless crap up here instead of functional switches."
I think Romans point was, that spot is prime for informative type stuff. Switches could be maybe lower in the center stack. But the whole thing is a Ford afterthought anyway.
@@donleamon8653 The last place I'd want any of my switches is mixed in with other center stack controls. This is one thing Ford gets right, both here and on the Bronco. That being said, I agree with you completely about the Ranger Tremor in general. Its a terrible package for the price.
Did you use A trac mode? What I know it would help with A trac engaged being you have a manual transmission.
It would have been nice to see an automatic tacoma use the crawl control against the trail control in the ranger but still a great video!

Thats pretty much how a lot of modern cars look inside. Toyota just doesn’t clutter the Tacoma with a bunch of crap.
