Can this BOT actually BEAT Grand Champions in Rocket League?

- Rocket League Bots are getting good....really good. Just a couple months ago I showed off Necto, the champion-level machine learning bot that had taught itself to play Rocket League. Well custom AI in Rocket League seems to be a fast paced business because we are already back with Necto Version 2 or Nexto. Nexto has put in over 200 thousand hours of it's own training and already has surpassed the skills of it's predecessor, Necto. Nexto can dribble and flick, aerial, and even pull off some back board defence. It's creators claim Nexto is now a Grand Champion Bot and today in this video we will put those claims to test.
First Nexto will need to show that it can overcome Necto's weaknesses. When Necto easily defeated Diamond players in 2v2 it set a new high bar for Rocket League bots. But unfortunately Necto was not strong enough to take down Champion Rocket League players. Nexto aims to pick up where Necto left off.
But does Nexto even look like a higher ranked player? I decided to put that to the test as well by bringing in two professional Rocket League Coaches for a special version of Rocket League Guess the Rank. Will the coaches be able to tell they are watching bots play? What rank does Nexto look like? And finally, can this new Machine Learning RLBot keep up with GCs in Rocket League?

@@joeykoch5664 I came here to ask that. I play offline now and again and unfair 4v1 isn't enough. The bots top out at silver.
As a side-note: Beckwith Park and Farmstead as well as their variations are a little bit broken in RLBot. For the most consistent performance from these bots, I would recommend Manfield Stadium, Champions Field, and DFH Stadium when bots are involved.
most impressiv thing for me was the timing on their challenges while defending...like right after a touch and the ball moving away from the player...even a split second thing and they found the sweet spot to turn and attack

@@14subieguy69 i've been faked by a normal bot and i'm gc2 lmao, teammate 50'd while i was rotating back, merlin hard boosted towards the ball and I preflipped to intercept the shot just for merlin to slow down last second and poke the ball behind me

This proves we should be able to get bots for every tanks in Rocket league. Imagine being able to train against the champ bot as a diamond as a way to improve without the stress and trash talk we get by playing humans.
These bots only train against themselves so getting them to play remotely like a human isn't really possible afaik.

@@Jackilichous Disagree. Beating these bots would require you to increase your consistency and speed of reading, assuming you don't actively abuse what the bots can't do. It wouldn't teach you the best game sense, but you can absolutely use it as a mechanics drill. Not a perfect supplement for playing against people, though.
@@Jackilichous How does it not seem helpful? If there was an option in training to play against bots and they were categorized by what RL rank they can beat then it would definitely be helpful to anyone trying to practice.

i feel like these bots could already easily hang with ssls on the ground, but the ssls would win by doing a lot more quality aerial plays than the gcs

If you go to the RLGym Twitch highlights, you can find a few showmatches with high ranked players, although the bot had much less training time in some of them.
Pranking Leth with them and seeeing if he can beat them 1v2 that would be funny
As someone who studied neural networks and uses them professionally, I cannot stress how impressive that is. Coming from a team of just 2 people, it makes it even more mind boggling. I'm so interested to see the architecture they used!
That bot is not GC. Where is the constant ballchasing, ego and toxicity?

Ballchasing good and it definitely does if you watch the nexto stream, it literally never picks up boost unless it gets the ball, it just keeps going for it
These bots' consistency, perfect touches look scary. I'm c3 in all main modes and I constantly do stupid stuff. It's kinda fascinating maybe even unnatural to see a bot which doesn't have a very high level movement but has this consistency
And their defense. I'm so impressed they can defend against gcs. Proper defense is hard, you need to have good gamesense to do that
Yep. If diamonds/champs could play perfectly consistent like Nexto, they could probably get to GC with their existing mechanics. Of course, no human is capable of this level of consistency.
This is actually really amazing and great to hear as a player with bad internet. Because of this I am almost exclusively a free play player. This makes my game sense terrible. Now I can finally play bots my skill level and perhaps rank up.
These bots won't give you great game sense to use against other players. It's better as a mechanical drill.

As a member of the RLBot community I'm very impressed with how far we have come.
I watched bots from just a few years ago where they had to be hard coded and they certainly have come a long way.
@@hershy1594 Most of the bots are still Hardcoded, but more and more bots are machine learning these days

@@makssachs8914 Not any time soon, but there is a bot training called Opti that potentially is going to beat Nexto, SSL bot maybe this year, Pro level bot not so sure of
@@JoshyDev That is exciting and terrifying at once. With all the progress AI has made in other fields recently I’m a bit scared of where it might be in say 10 years.

I think the bot is so op because it can take advantage of the time it takes us meatbags to make decisions and react to most things . It also has odd but very precise car control which not it takes advantage our indecisiveness as well as always have them perfect placed to attack or defend .

the best part is that out of anybody, psyonix should be the ones that would have the easiest job of actually doing it, considering they have access to literally all games that are being played including zhe exact inputs and everything. They should just hire the bot devs, honestly

and remember, this is 2022 GC. compared to the human skill level when the game was first released, this is pretty nuts. the double flick play was next level.

It’s weird to see how the bots play, they’re super grounded with basically no aerial plays accept for defense, yet they’re still gc level
u don't have to play in the air to be gc. There are so many playstyles to get there

It really shows that simple, safe (and very consistent) play is really all you need in RL. I doubt machine learning will ever take make a bot start doing flip resets or ceiling shots for this reason.
@@Rocket_Sledge true, what could be very strong is if the bots were able to use some mechanics only when they know that the timing is perfect and that the goal is nearly impossible to save. (and not using stupid mechanics all the time as all the gc2/1 players do ahah)
@@Rocket_Sledge Given a complex enough and really well trained network, they will. It's a hard skill to pick up, but it is useful. Eventually it will learn that stuff, and it might even find unknown mechanics.
That’s so cool! Soon we’ll be able to have our replays analyzed just like chess games are!
I wish they at some point in the future try to create a machine learning bot that uses camera switching for situational awareness. I mean so that we could load a bot replay and possibly learn something from that. Also maybe create bots for each rank with less precision - give them some control uncertainty to simulate worse mechanics, but still have their decision making. It would be interesting to see if their decision making changes depending on how precise they can be.

Their positioning is impeccable! The amount they can do with 0 boost is amazing.
I really would have loved to see some of the bot's progress on its way to this level of play. I know next to nothing about programming, AI, or anything like that, but I always love seeing how an AI improves over time in whatever it's doing. What did the bot look like when it was just starting out before the 200k hours of practice? Did it just drive around aimlessly? A Code Bullet-style video going over it would be cool.

They don't look like it, but I'm pretty sure it's the small tiny things and bot reaction time that get them to GC

Let’s be real. If the creators could take the different levels of the bots of nexto/necto and label them as different ranks, someone could help make a mod where you could select bot difficulty and play against it. It would be amazing for training!
That hopefully should eventually be a reality!

Psyonix helped RLBot create an environment people can run bots in, and that can't access any online services. So I imagine there's quite a lot of work to be done to make the bots you can download work for online (thankfully). Also RLBot will ban you etc. if you try to do this.
There is one that exist right now. Its called script something and its diamond 1 with over 5k games this season

We understand you are all anxious to get whooped silly by v2, which will be released to the RLBot Pack in due course. We cannot tell you when that will be, because v2 is still in it's training phase and no-one really knows when that will end as it is still improving. For now you can checkout v1.

If there was a way to make this public this could be such a good way to practice the game by playing against bots who are actually better than you over and over again. That’s an opportunity that people just don’t get when ur not at a higher rank already.

I did talk a lot more about the Machine Learning process in the first video (about Necto). This all came from an almost hour long interview I made that is not public. (Released it for Patreons & TH-cam Members). I may consider releasing it later through a community post.

it would be cool if you did this same concept but then when Nexto plays against actual players, you get some SSLs in there and they change their names to Nexto and destroy
Bots always have 0 ping and the AI Banner, so it's hard to hide a bot or a player pretending to be a bot.

Plot twist: This is Squishy and Jstn playing as the “Bots”
You can see them almost fake challenging a human into gaining ball possession again. That's beyond impressive.
I will now take "You are such a bot kid" as a compliment now
whoever made this should have trained each "move" separately (example, a wave dash, or a flip reset, or a shot on net), and tied them all together with a learning algorithm to utilize each learned "move" along with the ability to modify it situationally. this is KEY to SSL bot. and name it "Fluffy" because a bot that powerful deserves this most ferocious name.

I have enough trouble beating the rookie bots, this is insane.
Maybe the bot could try playing against another bot while it practices, like coevolution or something? Then it would learn strategies about challenging and other techniques
