Why do engines misfire?

  • Tutorial - How to diagnose misfire on vauxhall astra 2008 petrol
    The misfire detection monitor, a software strategy built into the computer, is designed to detect an engine misfire. The computer can also normally identify the specific cylinder in which the misfire has occurred. A misfire is nothing more than a lack of combustion, which can be caused by poor fuel quality or metering, low compression, lack of spark or unmetered air entering the engine. There are other possible, less obvious causes as well, such as uncommanded Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR), flow. When the misfire monitor detects a misfire, it will trigger the check engine light with the specific cylinder number as the last digit in the P030X code. For instance cylinder 4 misfire is P0304, P0300 code is for random cylinder misfire in the computer memory.
    Remove the coil pack, remove the plugs for any sign of damage and replace all four plugs with new coil pack and that should fix the problem.

    Blows the debris into every other spark plug hole...

    Regarding Opel's Turbo, when getting boost, and experience engine jitter/missfire, it may be tiny cracks in the rubber. If you've had such and only changed coil pack, be sure it will return later, as the outter side of the spark plugs most likely have black lines on it, caused by the missfire and have ionized that black line, making the spark to travel along the black line instead of making the spark inside the engine. The reason why this is related to boost is because the air/fuel mixture in the engine will be higher compressed, technically increasing the resistance between the gaps on the sparkplug, making the spark to jump 5 cm on the outside instead of the 1mm on the inside

    OMG, firstly, I can`t understand why you loosened the other spark plugs before using the air hose in and around cyclinder 4 = you blew the broken bits everywhere and into the other cylinders without any remorse, caution or common sense - or am I to believe this is how you normally treat customer vehicles to make more money by causing more damage?..............this is poor working practice.

    • @TajMotorMedics
      @TajMotorMedics  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Usually we would only recommend what’s good for the car and recommended by Vauxhall but you have makes like Denso, Bosch and NGK

      Sundus Shazadi 3 types for this model
      NGK ZFR5F ROUGHLY £6 each
      Bosch FQR8LEU2 ROUGHLY £5 each
      Denso K16TT ROUGHLY £5 each
      NGK is usually pretty good so I would stick with them.
      Thanks

    Is this a common fault with Vauxhall’s ?

    • @TajMotorMedics
      @TajMotorMedics  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it is on most of the astra’s and I did one yesterday but it wasn’t the coil pack or plugs so i ended up with replacing 1 injector and that fixed the problem

    I had a new coil pack fitted less than 6 months ago (well I think I did) in a astra 1.8 57 plate, and I read cylinder 2 is misfiring could it be the sparkplugs then?
    I thought coil packs were sparkplugs, didn't realise the engine contained both

    • @TajMotorMedics
      @TajMotorMedics  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hi thanks for the compliment! vauxhall has this common fault with coil packs and if you've had yours replaced not long ago then it should be under warranty. and if you've detected misfire then i would advise to replace coil pack as well as plugs and that shoud fix the misfire. hope this information is helpful :)

      I have that issue with a 2005 Astra H 2.0 Sri. replaced coil and spark plugs from vauxhall dealer and still a misfire. About to get shot of it as at my whits end. I did a pedal test - got quite a bit
      0204 / 1120 / 0300 / 0304 / 1614 / 1616 / 0000
      I just aint got a clue what to do......

    • @Dbass91
      @Dbass91 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      P0204 Cylinder 4 Injector Circuit Low B-034
      P1120 Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor 1 High Input C-008
      P0300 Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected B-024
      P0304 Cylinder 4 Misfire Detected B-024
      P1614 Wrong Transponder Key Immobiliser B-006
      P1614 Immobiliser Wrong Signal Received Immobiliser B-008
      P1616 CIM (Steering Column Module) Wrong Environment Identifier Immobiliser B-006
      Most likely a bad injector. Whats your fuel pressure?
      The pedal position shouldn't be an issue if you feel it's not an issue, but it's just a module like the rest of the car :)
      Have you also swapped out the keys somehow?

    • @TruthSeeker0413
      @TruthSeeker0413 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      no the pedal is not an issue but what is an issue is the squirreling noise coming form the engine and the severe misfire when it heats up. Would an injector react differently when hot from cold? My issue appears to be heat related as i can drive it every day until it heats up then it starts to misfire especially under load ie up a hill or steep angle. Oh further note when i hear that noise and put my clutch in the noise stops immediately. I could record it but i think the car may be scrap / project / spares - i dunno. MOTs up end of the month and I buy another car tomorrow. And always used same key i have a spare ive never used.

    • @Dbass91
      @Dbass91 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi again James,
      An injector is basically a coil to create a magnet field that will draw a pin from a hole. Around the pin is pressurized fuel so when the injector is activated, it will pull the pin, letting fuel go out. When copper heats up, the resistance increases, so if the coil have gone bad (but still connected) and the resistance increases, it might not create big enough magnetic field to withdraw the pin to let the fuel go out, causing the missfire. Or it could be the other way around, coil is damaged and does not tighten the hole when the coil expands due to heat.
      It's a wild guess from my side though. I'd try to swap the fuel injector on cylinder 4 with one of the other and see if the missfire follows the injector or the rest of the cylinder.
      When you clutch, do you also release throttle? If you do, there will be no firing happening in the engine, hence the sound stops.
