  • How to diagnose and replace a faulty coil on a Vauxhall Opel zafira. If you don’t have a code reader then check your plugs, if you’re gonna go to that trouble then why not just change them. They’re cheap. If the misfire persists then fit a coil pack because 90% it’ll be that.
    The OBD light will reset itself after a drive if the only code was misfire. Usually I don’t just swap parts to fix a fault but coil packs don’t give a specific code . Just misfire and the cylinder number. If the misfire goes away then the light resets on its own, it did on this car. By changing the plugs and coil you’ve eliminated the most likely cause, and you’ve got something for your money rather than spending that on diagnostics and the garage changing the plugs and coil and adding retail parts cost to the job. If you’re a novice you can do this. Just don’t tighten the plugs too much. Half a turn from when they settle on the washer is enough.

    Did you film the end part "I'm going to have a word about parts and wholesalers ..." and then the vid cuts out. I was on tenterhooks!

      😂😂 most people fall asleep listening to me rambling on.
      I was gonna do a comment but my wholesaler watches my stuff and I was a bit pissed off with them so thought best not to say something that’ll cause trouble cos they’re pretty good generally .
      I had a Golf in that failed the mot on emissions and the light was on. The front O2 sensor was not showing a signal so I bought a Cambiare one for about £85 . It’s a 5 wire wide band sensor. The light came back on and kept saying O2 sensor fault. So it couldn’t be the new sensor I thought, so I got a wiring diagram and tested the 5 wires from the ECU to the sensor plug, all good. The next move was send off the ecu for testing, but as a stab in the dark I bought a secondhand original sensor from an eBay breaker, £13. It cured the fault immediately. I returned the new Cambiare sensor but they wouldn’t refund me, cos it had been out of the bag and fitted, they returned it for testing, it came back good ( obviously) so they gave me £30 good Will gesture. Of course it was out the bag, i bought it to fit to a car. So in the trade, once an electronic part has been opened you can’t return it. It’s assumed to be have been tested in the factory and passed, and the fault was caused during installation or it’s a wiring ECU fault etc. I no longer use pattern parts for sensors. VWs especially don’t like them. My VW EGR woes video is another example of the ball ache pattern parts can cause

      Either 16mm or 5/8”. Usually I’d say use a 3/8 bar and ratchet but if they’re really tight use a 1/2 inch drive bar and ratchet, you’ll get a much better feel and force applied. They can snap off although it’s unlikely if you use 1/2inch and keep the bar dead upright and keep a steady pressure on the ratchet not just yanking it round. If you get it up half a turn you can spray WD down there and work them back and forwards half a turn till you’re sure they’re not binding. I always put a dab of copper grease on the new ones, that’s frowned on now but I been doing it 40 years and never had a problem.

    What’s the plus and negative on the coil pack ?

      Hi, I’m sorry I can’t say. I don’t have a wiring diagram. I think it’s 4 X live and 2 negatives with a wasted spark set up. 2 sharing a negative triggered by the ecu. If you turn on the ignition and probe the plug you should get 4X 12 volts but the negatives won’t show up until the ecu triggers them. But that’s just off the top of my head,

      This one is a 1.6 . Sorry for late reply. I don’t check back much on my videos. But the faulting procedure is the same .

      @@thpxs0554 how many miles would you recommend doing between each spark plug change? I did mine 12,000 miles ago. Just did the oil and filter but didn’t do the spark plugs. I sometimes have a little jump/ flat spot now and again when accelerating. Doesn’t happen very often just now and again. And it’s only for a split second. I was wondering if it’s the coil pack.

      I’d check the plugs and reset the gap every year, unless you’re doing 20k a year, then I’d just change them anyway, if you can stretch to Iridium plugs then you can just fit and forget them for up to 100,000 miles, but use anti seize paste on them cos you may need to get them out at some point to check compressions or look for water on the pistons.
      The cause of the misfire is impossible to determine without a 4 channel oscilloscope connected when it actually misses, then you’d see if it was a plug or coil event if it misfires regularly ( as in a certain number in a given time) then you’ll get a general code like “ misfire cylinder 4” but you wont get a code on occasional misses. I’d remove the coil and plugs and look at the plugs with a magnifying glass to see if there’s any trace of arcing on the porcelain and a corresponding mark on the coil, or any moisture at all in the plug/coil well. Once a track develops you’ll need a new plug, and everything must be totally dry. If there’s any sign water is getting in, usually condensation that doesn’t burn off and can’t get out then that could be the issue . You won’t get it in hot dry weather, but at the moment some engines are covered in moisture in the mornings. Hope that helps.
