  • Hello, welcome to my First Class review of the new Class 802 'Paragon' units of Hull Trains! Another train trip report on my channel. :)
In this video, I will be travelling on one of these brand-new bi-mode Hitachi trains from London King's Cross via Doncaster to Hull. The unit for today will be 802304, operated by FirstGroup on Hull Trains routes.
These new trains replaced the Class 180 Adelantes, with East Midlands Railway (EMR) taking these over and operating them on the Midland Mainline. I was a fan of the 180 fleet, so I wanted to see how the new Class 802 'Paragon' fleet would compare. They are named after the station, Hull Paragon Interchange.
Hope you enjoy this video of my thoughts, and don't forget to subscribe for more weekly content.

You should report the smell to Hull Trains, and the fit and finish problems too.
In Scotland, we have an app where we can report issues to them to have Scotrail deal with them... it’s very effective.

@11.14 Where you show the train branching off the East Coast Mainline, you are in fact continuing along the route of the original ECML. The section of ECML between the junction (called Temple Hirst Junction) and diverging off and joining the York to Leeds line a few miles south of York at Colton Junction was a completely new section of track opened in 1983.
The original ECML route followed the route of the Hull train as far as Selby. The section between Selby and Chaloners Whin Junction (slightly closer to York than Colton Junction) was closed and lifted when the new line opened.
The reason for this was anticipated subsidence of the old trackbed due to expansive coal mine workings in the Selby area.

Good review. Nice to see how they compare to the TPE ones I deal with on a daily basis. The toilet doors taking themselves out of action is a common problem. As you say, just manually closing the door resets the switches. The system that moves the door doesn't appear to be very strong and so movement of the train causes the door to open and it thinks it's broken.

@@Number-tv2uf The issue isn't "euro workers cutting costs", some of the most comfortable trains have come from European manufacturers, the issue is the DfT spec, which means that they ordered seats for these trains that would *normally* be used on commuter trains in places like Germany and Spain, so it all makes for an unbearable experience at high speed. The jagged harsh ride doesn't help either, and the build quality is quite abysmal.

I prefer this Hull Trains livery to the LNER (ex VTEC) livery. Blue really suits them, the bright stripe along the side reminds me a little of the fond GNER livery. Though I don't like the grey nose cone. It should be yellow or maybe silver, grey looks bland. Unfortunately I have noticed all the interior design, build quality and refinement shortcomings (except a urine smell, thankfully) on the LNER sets. It seems these are all criticisms that were leveled at the GWR sets when first introduce, and I think it is a real pity nobody has listened and the issues have not been addressed at all. I am thinking of writing to the DFT about this as it seems the passenger experience on these (and numerous other new trains) has been largely ignored and they are a significant step backwards on their predecessors in most of the key areas. For the prices we pay I think we deserve better! I'm sure Hull Trains will do what they can to fix the build quality but they are rather limited in how much they can change, and really shouldn't have to do that on a brand new fleet.

I have been a semi-regular Hull Trains passenger for a number of years, although I haven't travelled very much since the Paragons came in. My view of the previous trains was:
As you would expect, the Turbostars (170s) were just not up to the job of long-distance travel.
The Pioneers (222s) were fantastic - as well as looking stunning, they were really comfortable to ride in. It amazes me how they can be so much better than the almost identical Voyagers used on CrossCountry.
The Adelantes (180s) were nowhere near as nice, feeling cramped and downmarket in comparison to the Pioneers, they rode roughly and suffered from poor reliability as well. Their only advantage was that they were 5-car rather than 4-car and so there was a better chance of getting a seat, but that was all.
Although the ride quality on the Paragons may not be as good as you would want from an intercity train, the fact that they are running off the electric and so you haven't got a diesel engine thrumming away under the floor gives them a definite advantage for at least the bit of the journey between London and Doncaster. I didn't particularly notice the ride quality as being poor (at least, not worse than the Adelantes, but that isn't a high bar) but not having the diesel engine was a definite improvement.
Hopefully the fixtures and fittings can be tightened up going forwards to improve the ambience of these trains.

  • @gabrielstravels

Sorry to disappoint there but the Hitachi Class 800 series are one of my favourite trains on the whole UK network! I've been on the GWR IETs (Class 800/0 and 802/0 so far) and I love how fast they accelerate and how they can change mode even at speed! Even in diesel mode they are quite good!
Although I agree with you that the seats aren't really the best. The GWR ones were not as bad as I thought, and although quite comfortable, I felt that they would be better suited to commuter and regional trains than long distance trains.
Also, I noticed that when the Hitachi accelerates, it makes a weird panel noise that sounds like a plane overhead locker being closed and locked. Why is that?

Good video. Have you made Hull Trains aware of the interior fault issues? If not, as much as they get checked, they often don't see a lot of the issues as what show up when the trains are in service / at full speed. So they do appreciate being made aware, so that they can be reported to engineers to take a look at overnight. I'm also surprised that they revert to Diesel power before leaving Doncaster. I always thought these trains were capable of changing power source at speed. Accelerating on electric and then changing over to diesel when at speed would surely save fuel, especially when doing so multiple times a day.

Here's my Review as I have travelled on the regularly since their release.
The seats are nothing to write home about but on a 6+ Hour trip from Aberdeen to London they become uncomfortable, On the other hand improvement in legroom is spectacular in standard class especially LNER's Layout. They are relatively loud but this may coincide with the ride quality which is also pretty shabby for such nice looking trains. Another black mark is the handles and armrests on the seats as 1. The armrests are thin and exceptionally low & 2. The handles used for stability while walking are located halfway down the seat and not on the top like on the Class 170. About the smell I believe that is all around the Class 800 Fleets as it would appear to be an Aloe Vera smell from a cleaning agent. Much Improvement is needed to match the standard of the 125 & 225 sets. Overall Rating 6/10.

Mechanically they are good but everything looks and feels cheap even in First class. They had so much time to get it right and still not understand that people who travel long distances want comfort not someone who sits down for 30 seconds and says thats all right. The present car absolutely destroys the Sierra for build quality, interior noise and comfort levels. They need to keep improving cars to maintain customers. The DFT are largely responsible for the appalling seats and build quality of the newer long distance trains.

I probably won't have a ride on a Paragon as I live further up the ECML. I have ridden on Azumas between Newcastle and Edinburgh, and Newcastle and York. I didn't notice a smell, but the seats in Standard and First are too hard and too small for anybody taller than about 5'10" (or 1.80m). The panels rattle; the ride is the bumpiest I've ever experienced on a modern train, and worse than some rides on knackered BR Mk 1s I can remember, but the thing which really, really annoys me is the bike storage. On HSTs and Class 91+Mk4s this is in the guard's compartment or DVT respectively; AND right at the end of the train where we cyclists can load our bikes without getting in anybody's way. The HSTs have a nice big hook to hang the bike by its front wheel, the DVTs have a bike stand and strap. The Azumas and TransPennine units have bike storage cupboards in the vestibules of coaches in the middle of the train. You have to lift the bike through a passenger door, then turn it through 180 degrees, usually while other passengers are trying to get past/load their luggage/wave goodbye to their nana - and then you find the hooks to suspend the bikes are too small for any wheel rim +tyre deeper than 50mm - which is practically every single adult bike on the market. In short, the Class 8xxx series are rubbish.

It seems to be a common theme in many of the new trains not just IETs. I had a few trips on the new Northern class 195 and 331 and they were just as bad. Rock hard ironing board seats with no back support at all, cheap looking interiors with very harsh lighting, and a ride that crashes and shudders even on decent track - going over points at speed was incredible - like being in an old bus thats crashing over potholes! Very poor indeed. I think rock bottom price has been the main criteria in the DfT procurement process. The passenger experience seems to have been largely ignored. BR did a far better job with what little cash it had.

I thought they were supposed to be able to switch power source at speed? Seems kind of wasteful to use fuel and add emissions pulling away from a station like that.

I love the old HSTs and 225s, such a refined ride, but for the GWR region the seats in the mk3 carriages were really packed together and hurt my legs.

It's a shame that UK train companies purchase so many trains from a Japan manufacturer but continue to have bad interior design.
In Japan, bullet trains would never have horrible reverse-facing seats. It's painful to sit on them and I can't imagine the awkwardness to sit directly opposite a complete stranger for a several hours journey (luckily this is not gonna happen during Covid times).
The large tables in European trains are also unnecessary in my opinion - they made it painful to get in and out of window seat even when there is nobody sitting in the aisle seat, while the table leg of an individual seat is badly situated and my right leg could not avoid it in any comfy sitting position. Finally, it's super annoying during Covid time that I need to press a door button to get on/off the train.

Sadly yet another UK long distance train that doesn't focus enough on passenger comfort. So that's pretty much all 800 series and even worse, the passenger coach in the new sleeper stock. Hard, upright seating and a poor ride. Compare your average mid size family car from 30-40 years ago to the present. Absolutely no contest the newer models are far quieter and more comfortable. Why are we so incapable of procuring a longer distance train that's fit for purpose these days? We seem to do fine up until outer suburban, then it all falls apart.
