Excellent video. My wife and I use this service three or four times a year - or at least we did until the arrival of Covid - en route to and from our second home in Italy. We never tire of the journey and manage to spot something new every time. Since the opening of the Torino - Milano high-speed line in 2006, we normally change trains at Torino Porta Susa, which gives a faster connection for Florence - either by Trenitalia Frecciarossa or NTV Italo high-speed trains. The only thing that we don't like about the Christian Lacroix first class interiors - and it's a problem common to all TGV and Eurostar class 373 sets - is the fact that the fluorescent strip lighting is positioned immediately above the windows, which gives an annoying reflection when you're trying to photgraph or video the scenery through the window. Occasionally, when we have had to travel at very short notice and there were no first class seats available, we have had to endure the truly awful Lacroix second class seats, which are much harder, very narrow and have a ridiculously-designed protruding metal reclining handle underneath the front of the seat - which bruises the back of your legs every time you get in or out of the seat. The small galley area at the end of car 2 was formerly used for meal preperation in the days when all first class passengers were served an at-seat meal. It's a shame that you changed seats to the right hand side after leaving Torino, as you missed the spectacular mountain-top medieval fortifed abbey - the Sacra di San Michele - the inspiration for Umberto Eco's novel "The Name of the Rose". The TGVs are not scheduled to stop at Bussoleno; it must have been a signal stop. All-in-all, an excellent travelogue on a beautiful route! I look forward to seeing Dylan's take on it!
Hi there, glad you enjoyed my video so much! :) I can't say I noticed any problems in Second Class, although I was only sat there for 30 seconds. Maybe a proper trip on this seat is needed?
I just love the TGV. It is the definitive european high speed train. Our german ICE service can be great when it arrives on time BUT too often it just doesn‘t. I did Marseille- Paris once and it was an absolute blast and about as relaxed as it gets. All the other services still have some catching up to do
A great travel report. That journey is by far the best I have travelled on a TGV. I did Paris to Milan return in 2017 by TGV in second class having a window seat to myself in both directions. The alpine scenery is beautiful both sides of the border. I paid €29 each way which was a bargain.
Yes, I know why there is a tiny 2nd class at the end. It's because of the engine taking less space than on the Sud Est units which means they managed to put a "family space" 2nd Class
Knew you would! Wonder why it wasn't First Class. Presumably there's another one at the other end, but not many families are in First Class... Thought it would make a good conference room, if it was refurnished.
At the beginning, there was (at the TGV-réseau trains like this one) a luggage compartment and a tiny first class group compartment at this section. Both were unused or horrible, when you paid a firs class ticket and only got one of those horribly cramped seats. It was a good solution, to create this 2nd class compartment instead, means more seats instead of useless space.
Definitely prefer the slower scenic route you're sharing... There is nothing better than the pure relaxation and enjoyment of the scenery while on a rail trip. Thank you!
Nice vid, ive got to try this one day, cross country travel i mean.. I also like the announcement chime @3:30, i like to call it the baby brother version to the chime you hear in french train stations, its a lil more subtle lol
The tiny seating area at the end is also on the 10 car Atlantique trainsets, my personal favourite! The older TGVs are definitely better than the newer ones.
Yes, I totally agree. I'm not keen on the duplexes, especially downstairs, as they feel rather claustrophobic. Upstairs is OK, but the TGV single deck trains are my preference. Strangely, I find the Swiss double-deck trains OK, maybe just the way they're fitted out.
I love this video. I've driven from Lyon to Milan a number of times as we lived near Macon for 10 years until 2012. Used Macon Loche as our link to Paris. The TGV is a shining example of how to build and run a high speed railway. And it was done iver 40 yrs ago! Why oh why can't we do the same?
Nice video... I wonder why only the Milan Porto Garibaldi station has direct trains to Paris, and not the bigger Milan Centrale station, where those trains used to go. These trains don't even show up on the Italiarail website.
1. Milano Centrale station, before Covid-19 arrived, was nearly exploding with more than 700+ departures per day. Easier for Trenitalia to accomodate the TGVs in Garibaldi. 2. Because the Milan-Paris TGV has a dedicated website.
Excellent! Love TGV’s! But as well scenery on non high speed stretches! Want to go in July with TGV Lyria - Zürich to Paris ( 4 hours n 4 minutes - fast!!) and next day by Eurostar to London! Back from London via Brussels to Munich!!! And then to Bregenz where I am residing! Not quite sure whether to travel with individual tickets or with global Interrail pass! Thanks again. TRAVEL SAFE! I spent 3 months travelling all over France in 1985, almost exclusively in 1st class TGV services... they were a revelation for a young Aussie backpacker! In seat service with wine and baguette... great memories!
French style power socket: you can insert a male Schuko (German style) plug provided with female ground socket in order to insert the male ground plug you can see in the video
we went a few yaers ago from london to nice on a double decker ... then nice to millan awsome way to travel .. and in regards the first leg faster than flying !!
So my impressions ... (1) great presentation, thank you! (2) nice big brown spot on seat cushion. (3) couldn’t get over how quiet the train was (4) yes, yes I understand COVID-19 has finished a number of services, but really one attendant serving from a trolley couldn’t be that bad ... put the meals on a tray and slide it in front of the passenger. Even could cater a simple attractive cold meal tray. Swiss (air) does a nice catering in Business Class so it could be on that order. (4). Prefer scenic routes now as I’ve finally reached retirement and left the hurry hurry pace of life ... and enjoying life more 👍🏻. (5) subbed you as I thought your presentation was bang on spot 👍🏻
We did that journey in the other direction in 2014. An enjoyable journey which did get a bit tedious towards the end. We left Paris on a train advertised as direct to Milan but we had to unexpectedly change trains at Chambery which caused considerable confusion - no announcement on the train (my other half speaks French fluently so would have heard and understood) and it was only a passenger who boarded at Chambery who told us the train was returning to Paris that avoided us heading back to the French capital. Many of us in 1st class had ordered and consumed their meals but were still to pay when we had to disembark there, causing the poor steward a nervous breakdown trying to collect the monies due. It was total chaos!
I stumbled on your excellent channel this morning and have been working my way through your videos. They are really well put together. But now the dumb bit....! That class 66 at Modane, would that have travelled through Dollands Moor freight facility, close to the Eurotunnel terminal, here in Folkestone? I see them there sometimes, but it never occurred to me that they would perhaps venture such long distances. A bit daft I know, but I just never thought about it. Keep up the great work (Oh, I subscribed too!) Nige

Not blood and iron, Otto? ;-) Seriously, though - the food prices are hilarious and ridiculous if you compare them to the ticket price. I can't afford to travel at all these days (I just ride a bike), but I suppose regular travellers get used to it. I'd most definitely have packed myself a homemade lunch, though - egg sandwiches, crisps, banana, bar of chocolate, flask of tea. (£1.48 total. Result!)

I used a sevice Milan - Chambery some years ago, there was a problem with the onboard toilets, didn't need to looks for signs to find them, they stunk awfuly, the small indicated their presence. Shocking. Also, in Milan there was a big step down from the train to the platform, my wife almost fell when alighting! I note the train was using the left track most of the way.
The reason for the tiny second class section : TGV are articulated trainset. It means that the truck is in between cars. But it as power cars and those are not articulated, so the first and last car are longer with a truck directly below each extremity. On the first TGV, the Sud-Est, those trucks were powered and the tiny section you saw was an engine room. But with the second generation of TGV, the Atlantique, power was increased and the power cars were now sufficient (8.8MW total vs 6.5MW for the Sud-Est). So what used to be an engine room is now a passenger compartment, situated directly over the truck. Also, in front of it there is a cargo hold. Rarely used.
Soon, also the Frecciarossa 1000 will be used on this service, as they have apparently passed all the tests to circulate in France. And apparently, they are faster than the TGV stock
19:47 About your comment ""Macon-Loche TGV station has the highest customer satisfaction" I wonder what the criteria was used? This station is in the boondocks, there is nothing to do there and there is no direct connection to the Macon city and downtown train station. Several new TGV stations have been build often far from any main activity centers. I think the worse is the Haute-Picardie TGV station, whose nickname is "gare des betteraves" because the location is in middle of an agricultural field half way between Amiens and Saint-Quentin. A better compromise is the Avignon TGV station which is connected to the main station by a light train shuttle. I believe the Montpellier TGV station is also connected to the downtown main station by a subway line.
All the line between Milan and Paris is double track, except a short stretch of single track line between Chambery e Saint Andrè Le Gaz, at south-west of Lyon. The line between Turin and Modane is all doubled, but the two tracks follow differents paths due of mountainuos terrain and different time of construction. Usually westbound trains (towards France) use the newer less steep track, built as doubling of old track with more long tunnels and less scenic than older and steeper one, usually used only for descent (eastbound) trains. For some reason (maybe some maintenance works on the correct track) the Tgv used the eastbound track to go toward France. Usually the trip toward Paris is a little bit less scenographic than showed in this video.
I want to keep both the scenic and HS routes! We can afford both, the legacy tracks can also be good freight arteries. When I'm in a hurry, HS is way to go, but Milano-Paris is a long way for HS. I once did London-Bologna via Frankfurt and Munich. Fun, but a day-long trip. I've always loved TGV's, but the Italian and German HS sets are nice, too. Haven't tried the ones in Spain yet. On the London-Bologna trip, the Eurostar was getting a bit worn inside, but they've been facelifted since. Thalys was also a little the worse for wear, the new ICE3's on the relatively new Schnellfahrstrecke Köln-Rhein/Main were superb.
the legacy route will continue to exist, mainly for local trains. Freight will mostly use the new "high speed" route, which will actually be a "fast" 220kph. It's 220kph lien and not a true 300+ high speed line because : 1- to complicated/expensive trough the Alps 2- mainly design for freight 3- and Lyon-Turin local train with a 200kph top speed (2 hours of travel time) With TGV running at 220kph it will connect Lyon and Turin in 1H45. By going around Lyon and using both the french "Sud Est" 300kph and Italian "Turin Milan" 300kph line (up to 400kph in the futur), journey time will be reduce to 4 hours.
È attualmente in costruzione il TAV (Treno Alta Velocità), con un maxitunnel xi valico di oltre 50 km; assai contestato dai montanari delle regioni interessate, che non lo vogliono..
Aren't plug sockets the same between France and Italy, all the same in continental Europe? Love the reports and love to get do some interesting rail trips next year
They change, Italy has one of its own but luckily more and moee plugs are becoming compatible. All the plugs in my house are compatible with both the sockets (European and Italian ones)
That would be amazing. It's a shame it would be so challenging to authorise, as it would make a nice one-off tour if nothing else - I would definitely be on that.
The scenery looks beautiful in my opinion, one of the benefits using train as transportation. And in terms of appearances the right one seems more beautiful in my opinion. I have a question,Does Passenger receives notification when entering a station?
Building all these base tunnels in the alps is great for freight but sucks for passenger services. I'll take the old Lötschberg and Gotthard lines any day over the "new and improved" versions.
They're faster though, theoritically they have to compete with planes. But I agree with you, mountain areas have great landscapes and it's a pity to just go underground
@@SuperalbsTravels I’ve driven my truck through the fresus and there’s a great big parking area on the french side where I filmed a short clip of a Tgv passing .
Soon, with the possibility for french train to run on italian high speed track, and italian trains to run on french high speed track, the journey will be much more appealing. And once the faster (220kph) and more direct line between France and Italy will be open, then it will be truly competitive with planes. If they also increase the speed of the line between Turin and Milan, which is design for 400kph, but 350 kph is more realistic and is possible with both the ETR1000 and TGV Dasye/Euroduplex/Horizon, then the total journey time will be under 4 hours :)
I hope that the TAV will be complete soon, so the route Torino-Lione will be at High speed as well. And it's a shame that Trenitalia doesn't allow TGV train on the high speed route Torino-Milano... weel of course TGV could be see as a competitor of FrecciaRossa, and they already allow Italo, that is a private operator... but after all Trenitalia can make TGV pay for the concession of the line. And yes Italian two pin socket are cross-compatible with french one (if I'm not wrong, is also the one used in Germany) and many device in Italy are sold with that type of socket, like my PC power supplies. A schuko----> 3 pin Italian socket adpater is an object present in every Italian house
I'm a true train fan. I live in the country that has the most railtracks compared to its surface. I'm Belgian! Here, there aren't many tracks left to visit. By the way, the video is a nice way to discover Trains in Europe.
What camera setup do you recommend for filming out of train windows like this? Going to hopefully do Interrail and want to show some video to the family of Switzerland
Faisant souvent le trajet Paris-Turin et retour en 1ere classe, les voitures sont très dégradées et mériteraient une restructuration complète du matériel ( siège sans appui-tête, impossible a régler, etc...)
Another great video thanks. I have made this trip a few times (pre-covid) in 1st class and been so impressed with it all. A comfortable, fast smooth train, nice helpful staff and good catering plus bonus of fantastic views. I did not want to get off but had to continue on the Eurostar train to London which was also a nice experience. However, to end my trip I had to endure a long horrific uncomfortable ride in a Japanese IET train on GWR from Paddington to my final destination. I believe you too are not impressed with these things. If only the UK government chose a European train like the TGV then it would have been a totally perfect adventure. p.s. (old TGV Nose is best)
I just realized that at 11:48 you wrote Tirano instead of Torino. Just to inform you, Tirano is a completely different city located in north-east Lombardy an served by a Trenord RegioExpress.
Should be a mix of both scenic and high speed rail. Send the bullet trains in the tunnel and the semi high speed and low speed trains as a marketed scenic route.
@@SuperalbsTravels mistake on the Eurostar booking was offered a senior citizen business on outward from U.K.at a nice price this came through on TGV as first, ok that was back in 2005 Since then there’s been a big hike on fairs. Early 00s St Pancras - Rotterdam standard booking gave you Thalys from Brussels. Friends who use Euro Tunnel say taking the car no longer any deals, which is sad
Nice video! This has to be cheaper than some of the airlines from Milan to Paris (Although RyanAir sells tickets at least 75% cheaper than the amount you had to pay for your ticket). It's definitely better than just flying in the air and stare at clouds. The exciting bit is normally during take off and landing. I definitely prefer the older trains although the new trains might offer a good amount of comfort so you could try them out.
Not to mention that the advantage of taking trains Is that they leave you right in the city center instead of an airport 10 km away. Also you don't waste hours before boarding with safery controls, luggage check-in and no boarding queue, you just straight get on the train and take your seat. At the end a flight within two european countries takes the same as a train route if we consider all the pre-flight procedures, the time you spend at the baggage claim and the transfer from the airport to your accommodation. Definitely railways are more convenient when travelling within the continent.
A very civilised way to travel. Quiet and serene. My ideal way to see much of Europe. Great video, keep up the good work.
It certainly is! :)
Night trains are even better, but sadly the one on this route has been cancelled.

I think the worse is the Haute-Picardie TGV station,
whose nickname is "gare des betteraves" because the location is in middle of an agricultural field half way between Amiens and Saint-Quentin.
A better compromise is the Avignon TGV station which is connected to the main station by a light train shuttle.
I believe the Montpellier TGV station is also connected to the downtown main station by a subway line.
15:31 i’m only prefer that the train company should changes the single track lines into double track, for increasing the line capacity
Great video !!
Thanks! Happy to hear you enjoyed it.
It would be coool to have a video from the cab of that train.
Wow, yeah! It would be even more beautiful from the front - no doubt!
It's 220kph lien and not a true 300+ high speed line because :
1- to complicated/expensive trough the Alps
2- mainly design for freight
3- and Lyon-Turin local train with a 200kph top speed (2 hours of travel time)
With TGV running at 220kph it will connect Lyon and Turin in 1H45. By going around Lyon and using both the french "Sud Est" 300kph and Italian "Turin Milan" 300kph line (up to 400kph in the futur), journey time will be reduce to 4 hours.
Yes, even the first generation TGV’s are an extremely good looking train.
Agree, love the original style.
Nice job. Hope you would review TGV Lyria and also Ouigo services.
Thanks, hopefully one day!
Amazing !!!!
Brilliant video mate
Many thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it, was very fun to make! :)
È attualmente in costruzione il TAV (Treno Alta Velocità), con un maxitunnel xi valico di oltre 50 km; assai contestato dai montanari delle regioni interessate, che non lo vogliono..
Loved it !
Thanks, glad you liked the video. :)
Aren't plug sockets the same between France and Italy, all the same in continental Europe? Love the reports and love to get do some interesting rail trips next year
They're slightly different, but sometimes compatible...
They change, Italy has one of its own but luckily more and moee plugs are becoming compatible. All the plugs in my house are compatible with both the sockets (European and Italian ones)
Time would be the killer, but would be a nice scenic route & destination for Eurostar. London to Milan
Naples to london in 12 hours
That would be amazing. It's a shame it would be so challenging to authorise, as it would make a nice one-off tour if nothing else - I would definitely be on that.
The scenery looks beautiful in my opinion, one of the benefits using train as transportation.
And in terms of appearances the right one seems more beautiful in my opinion.
I have a question,Does Passenger receives notification when entering a station?
Building all these base tunnels in the alps is great for freight but sucks for passenger services. I'll take the old Lötschberg and Gotthard lines any day over the "new and improved" versions.
The scenic route always beats a tunnel if you have the time! 😍
They're faster though, theoritically they have to compete with planes. But I agree with you, mountain areas have great landscapes and it's a pity to just go underground
9:27 Why the half-black screen? Is it because something was inappropriate on those seats?
Because I made an editing error.
Great vid loved that 👍
Thank you, glad you liked it. :)
@@SuperalbsTravels I’ve driven my truck through the fresus and there’s a great big parking area on the french side where I filmed a short clip of a Tgv passing .
17:05 power change over or neutral section 🤔🤔🤔
Excelent 🎉
U shld review the ICE 3, AVE S100 and AVE S103 as well
Hopefully I can soon!
9:25 why did half of the screen turn black?
Due to an editing error! 😭
Thanks! Didn't know that about Belgium, thanks for telling me! :)
One vote for the old design of train nose. It’s elegant - the newer design is a bit blobby. The blue and silver livery is good too.
I prefer the old one too, it looks a lot more distinctive.
What camera setup do you recommend for filming out of train windows like this? Going to hopefully do Interrail and want to show some video to the family of Switzerland
I use a GoPro!
Those are SNCF BB26000 and Italy Capable BB36000 which usually handle the goods train some of them are carrying Lorries
I guess it's a very busy freight route then?
@@SuperalbsTravels it is because it's the main route for France to Italy freight services.
@@EpicThe112 I suppose that makes sense!
I travelled TGV 11times. I like silver and blue nose better than others.
Wondering why the border control in Milano, with both Italy and France being in the Schengen zone.
Faisant souvent le trajet Paris-Turin et retour en 1ere classe, les voitures sont très dégradées et mériteraient une restructuration complète du matériel ( siège sans appui-tête, impossible a régler, etc...)
Can't say I saw any of that, shame!
That's exactly what I did unfortunately, a ride on one of GWR's new trains. Video on that trip coming soon, I'm sure you'll agree with the review. :|
The AT300s are brilliant trains that are let down by their interiors. That can easily be fixed, thankfully.
I just realized that at 11:48 you wrote Tirano instead of Torino. Just to inform you, Tirano is a completely different city located in north-east Lombardy an served by a Trenord RegioExpress.
Yeah I know, silly mistake lol.
the small 2nd class section is for the cheapest ticket. You can see that sits are different and less comfortable (sorry for my english).
Didn't know that, thanks!
@@SuperalbsTravels pleasure
waduh asik banget naik kereta api jarak jauh
Brilliant video, I prefer the newer TGV's nose design, the older one is a bit of an odd shape although Is still like it.
Thanks! Fair enough, I'd have to choose the older one myself, it looks very distinctive.
Should be a mix of both scenic and high speed rail. Send the bullet trains in the tunnel and the semi high speed and low speed trains as a marketed scenic route.
How do I reserve a forward facing seat in first class from Paris to Milan route?
I’ve traveled TGV Marseilles to Paris 1st class on a surprise upgrade, which was nice but these new TGV trains look the business.
Ahh, these are actually the older ones, which I prefer due to being more roomy.
@@SuperalbsTravels I got lucky on a trip to Marseilles and got an upgrade to first on the return journey
How did you manage that?
@@SuperalbsTravels mistake on the Eurostar booking was offered a senior citizen business on outward from U.K.at a nice price this came through on TGV as first, ok that was back in 2005 Since then there’s been a big hike on fairs. Early 00s St Pancras - Rotterdam standard booking gave you Thalys from Brussels. Friends who use Euro Tunnel say taking the car no longer any deals, which is sad
@@likklej8 Interesting, and it is sad people choose not to travel by high-speed train due to cost, as it's such a compelling option otherwise.
Can you do a tour on the Giruno from Milano to Zürich?
I had tried to, but unfortunately was unable to.
Will get back there soon to give it a try! :)
Oh my gosh!!!!!!!!
Cool
@9:24 the lower half of the screen goes black for several seconds.
Editing error.
So now i just want to know what was being blacked out at 9:30
Editing mistake, there was meant to be a caption about the tip-up seats... :(
Hello, I have to agree! Sounds interesting, which older/newer trains do you mean there?
@@SuperalbsTravels I'm talking about the one which is the TGV POS. The old one you took was the TGV Sud-Est.
If you're reading this, have a nice day from LolBit, Prague, Czech Republic!
